President Emmerson Mnangagwa has demanded that local publication NewsDay retract a story published on June 28th, titled “US Scoffs at ED”.
The article was based on remarks made by Mnangagwa during a recent conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg.
In the meeting, Mnangagwa claimed that the United States was consolidating its influence in neighbouring Zambia, both in terms of security and financial support, in order to isolate Zimbabwe.
However, in a statement issued on Friday, Mnangagwa’s spokesperson George Charamba accused NewsDay of falsely asserting that the Zimbabwean president had stated that “Zambia posed a security threat to Zimbabwe” and that “Zambia had become an American client-state and was bent on destabilizing the region.”
Charamba warned that the Office of the President would take unspecified action against the newspaper if the story was not retracted. Said Charamba:

The Office of the President and Cabinet takes very strong exception to both misrepresentations cited above, which are intentionally malicious, and which are meant to drive a wedge between the two sister Republics of Zimbabwe and Zambia.
President Mnangagwa’s remarks were very clear and are in the public domain; they pointedly referred to, and abhorred America’s hostile activities in the Sadc [Southern African Development Community] region, which activities are calculated to isolate Zimbabwe, and to undermine peaceful inter-state relations, good neighbourliness and cohesion which all member states in our region are sworn to, continually cherish and jealously guard.
For the record and for the avoidance of any doubt, President Mnangagwa stands by his remarks in St Petersburg which raised well-founded fears for Zimbabwe regarding American intentions and activities in our region, and which voiced and defended Zimbabwe’s sacrosanct security interests, while echoing the collective position of Sadc and the African Union, AU, against any foreign military presence and/or activities on African soil.
At no point did the president of Zimbabwe describe the sister Republic of Zambia as posing a security threat to Zimbabwe or as a client state of any power, including America.
In view of the abundant malice and the sheer recklessness in the NewsDay story, the Office of the President and Cabinet demands that the Editor of the offending publication unconditionally retracts the misleading story without any delay.
Section 61 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe provides no refuge to publishers and vendors of falsehoods and malicious misrepresentations.
To that end, the Office of the President and Cabinet reserves the right to seek repair, and to ensure enforcement of professional standards in newsrooms and in publications where these fall short.

Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks with President Emmerson Mnangagwa at the Constantine Palace on Thursday.

I am delighted to welcome you to Russia.
Our previous meeting also took place here in St Petersburg, at the Russia‒Africa Summit, and we truly appreciate your personal involvement in developing our interstate ties.
Russia‒Zimbabwe relations were established a long time ago when your nation was struggling for independence, and they continue to advance extensively. I was pleased to note that our mutual trade increased severalfold over the past year. However, it is clear that we still have much work to do in diversifying our ties.
We have very good relations in the humanitarian and educational sectors. Currently, 400 young people from your country are studying in Russia, and we increase this quota on a regular basis.
I appreciate your involvement in our joint persistent efforts in the international arena. Our stances on the core issues on the international agenda are quite similar and even coinciding.
I am glad to have this opportunity to meet with you on the sidelines of the St Petersburg International Economic Forum. I am confident that your presence here will serve as a testimony to the African continent’s interest in developing relations with Russia, which is among our priorities.
We have agreed to make efforts to enhance our cooperation, and have also created new interaction formats, such as meetings and consultations between our foreign ministers. We hope that your representative will attend such a meeting that will take place in Sochi this autumn.

Thank you very much, Your Excellency President Putin.
May I, on behalf of the people of Zimbabwe, the government, and indeed on my own behalf, extend my warmest regards to you. I am so happy that you were able to invite me to come here to meet you. This is an opportunity, Your Excellency, that I have been looking forward to, because Zimbabwe and the Russian Federation have excellent relations, and it is critically important that we make them more comprehensive and share the challenges that we are facing.
Commonly, the challenges that you face are the same challenges that we face in Southern Africa, because we are one of the few countries in Southern Africa that is regarded as anti-West, and I feel so humbled that you have extended an invitation for me to come over here. This is an opportunity where we can share the challenges that we face both at the national level and at the international level, because we have relations with Western countries. But most importantly, it is an opportunity to consolidate them, to identify areas where we can pursue cooperation between our two countries and consolidate, and make them more comprehensive between ourselves. There is no need to shy away from each other. I think our pursuit in terms of international relations is the same.
We were disregarded as an isolated island in Southern Africa, but I am anxious that we develop comprehensive relations with the Russian Federation, and I can assure you that I have that determination on my part. And much more so, you yourself, as the President, as well as the Russian Federation, have support in Zimbabwe. You see, we have received support, we received food allocations from yourselves last year, and we have received cooperation in the military and security sector. That alone, as you continue to do so, we continuously become isolated in our region. But we are determined to be ourselves, we are determined to be independent.
We don’t care what other countries say about us, you know, under President Mugabe. And there was this Prime Minister in Britain, and the relations just ended there. And thereafter, most of the British and Americans, they have not looked upon us; they think that we are too inclined to the East. But we have no apologies at all. We feel we have better relations with the people who also respect us, not the persons who look down upon us. So we are very happy to be here. We are anxious to have more comprehensive and concentrated relations between ourselves. Yes, we are a very advanced country; but there is a lot that we can learn from you and there is a lot that will benefit from that relationship. And there is a lot that we can open for the Russian Federation to participate in our economy, especially in the mining sector and agriculture. There is a lot that we can afford for you to participate.
And in that process, the West will run away. You see, the West has just begun consolidating its power in Zambia, our next neighbour. You know, there was a time when Zambia and Zimbabwe were one; it was called Northern and Southern Rhodesia. It was made one by the British, but they are now separate. And the Americans are consolidating their power in that country, both in terms of security and in terms of financial support to Zambia to make sure that we feel lonely. But that will not change us, because we have taken a course as a people that we feel we want to be independent and we will choose our friends ourselves. And besides, we are independent today because most of us in the leadership trained here during our war of liberation. We got our independence because we are supported by yourselves here, and we don’t forget that history, and you don’t forget about us.
So, Mr President, I am happy to be here. If an opportunity avails later on – I mean, we will find time to chat and go into more detail as to which areas we must focus on in terms of supporting each other and in terms of where we feel we need external support, especially in the area of difference in security as well as food security. Those areas we need to be supported in – the mechanisation of agriculture and so on. We cannot go to the West; we have to come here because the West would want to see us down. They support our neighbours, Zambia and Malawi, very heavily. But in spite of that, Zimbabwe’s economic growth is the fastest growing economy in the region, in spite of us being isolated by the Americans.

Transcript Of Mnangagwa Meeting With Putin

President Emmerson Mnangagwa expressed concern to Russia’s President Vladimir Putin regarding the preferential treatment Western nations give to Zambia through military and financial aid.
Mnangagwa, who is set to take over the SADC chairmanship this year, insinuated that Zambia is a Western puppet which Moscow must combat.
In a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at Konstantinosky Palace in the Petrodvorets district of St. Petersburg, Strelna village, two days ago, at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum in Russia, Mnangagwa said the United States of America is consolidating its power in Zambia to isolate Zimbabwe. He said:

Mnangagwa’s remarks have sparked debate on social media as they expose Harare’s uneasiness over her neighbour’s choice of friends.

A Zambian diplomat based in Harare told The NewsHawks:
That was reckless by President Mnangagwa. Zimbabwe and Zambia are neighbours with a close history as he said himself, dating back to the federation days.
Besides, he grew up in Zambia; to all intents and purposes he is also Zambian. So how can he talk toxic stuff like that as if he is an irresponsible opposition leader. Moreover, in a foreign country, in far-flung Russia.
This will unnecessarily stoke diplomatic tensions between Harare and Lusaka, given the dispute over the Zimbabwean elections last year and the coming SADC summit.

Meanwhile, presidential spokesperson George Charamba suggested that video footage of Mnangagwa’s meeting with Putin was leaked. 
Responding to an X (formerly Twitter) user who had queried why Mnangagwa made the remarks about Zambia in public, suggesting that some in his inner circle “are deliberately setting him up”, Charamba said:

Why don’t you ask about the circumstances before jumping to condemnation? As you can see from the set-up, this was a closed meeting in which the President of Zimbabwe was a guest.
The recording was in-house to the host. Don’t ask me how it found its way into the public domain; I cannot assist you.
Indeed one-on-one meetings are moments of truths and impressions unadorned and said in confidence.
All Heads do that in such meetings, always with the attendant risks of such lapses. Nothing extraordinary.

In April last 2023, the US Africa Command (Africom) announced it was setting up an office in Zambia. Africom has bases across Africa.
Zambia and many other African countries are close to the US and other Western democracies, while some states like Zimbabwe and South Africa are allies of China and Russia which are under authoritarian governments.

Mnangagwa Reveals Uneasiness Over American Presence In Zambia During Meeting With Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday warned that Moscow might provide long-range weapons to strike Western targets if NATO allies allow Ukraine to use their arms against Russian territory, reported <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cn44r9zjnpjo">BBC News</a>.
Putin also reiterated Russia’s readiness to use nuclear weapons if it sees a threat to its sovereignty.
Several Western countries including the United States have given Ukraine the green light to strike targets inside Russia.
Addressing foreign reporters, Putin said such action could lead to “very serious problems”. He said:

If someone thinks it is possible to supply such weapons to a war zone to attack our territory and create problems for us, why don’t we have the right to supply weapons of the same class to regions of the world where there will be strikes on sensitive facilities of those countries?
That is, the response can be asymmetric. We will think about it.

Putin, however, did not specify which countries Moscow could supply weapons to.
The Russian president singled out Germany, which recently told Ukraine it was free to hit targets inside Russia with long-range German-made weapons. He said:

When they say that there will be more missiles which will hit targets on Russian territory, this definitively destroys Russian-German relations.
</blockquote>
US President Joe Biden recently permitted Ukraine to use American-supplied weapons to strike targets in Russia, but only near the Kharkiv region.
The White House has said Ukraine cannot use long-range ATACMS missiles on Russian soil.
UK Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron has said it is up to Ukraine to decide how to use British weapons.
Ukraine claims North Korean missiles are being used inside Ukrainian territory, while Western intelligence agencies say Russia has been using Iranian-made drones in the conflict.
Putin was speaking to foreign journalists at the annual St Petersburg International Economic Forum.
Asked by Reuters about the risk of nuclear escalation over Ukraine, Putin said the West was wrong to assume that Moscow would never use nuclear weapons. He said:

For some reason, the West believes that Russia will never use it.
We have a nuclear doctrine, look what it says. If someone’s actions threaten our sovereignty and territorial integrity, we consider it possible for us to use all means at our disposal.
This should not be taken lightly, superficially.

Putin also scoffed at the idea that Russia has plans to attack NATO territory. He said:

You should not make Russia out to be the enemy. You’re only hurting yourself with this, you know?
hey thought that Russia wanted to attack Nato. Have you gone completely crazy? That is as thick as this table.
Who came up with this? It is just complete nonsense, you know? Total rubbish.

Russia Threatens To Arm West's Enemies With Long-Range Missiles

On the opening day of the 2024 Russian presidential election, there have been several incidents of vandalism targeting ballot boxes and polling locations.
<a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-68576817">BBC</a> reported Russian officials as saying dye has been poured into ballot boxes, and there have been additional incidents such as ballot boxes being set alight and fireworks being set off inside polling stations.
These reported acts of sabotage have occurred across Russia, with most incidents reported in Moscow, Voronezh (in south Russia), and the region of Karachay-Cherkessia in the north Caucasus.
In one video circulating on social media, a woman was seen pouring bright green liquid into a ballot box in Moscow.
The use of green dye, known locally as Zelyonka, has been associated with protests in both Russia and Ukraine.
President Vladimir Putin is expected to secure another six years in office as he faces no credible opponent. Turnout has reached 23% by late afternoon in Moscow.
Voting is also taking place in occupied areas of Ukraine where an improvised device exploded in front of a polling station in the small town of Skadovsk, without causing injuries.
The deputy chairman of Russia’s Central Election Committee, Nikolay Bulayev, has described the saboteurs as “scumbags” and warned that perpetrators could face up to five years in jail for their actions. 
Some of those detained for filling ballot boxes with liquids reportedly admitted doing so for money.
Tensions remain high, especially following the recent death of Putin’s vocal critic, Alexei Navalny, and calls from his widow, Yulia Navalnaya, for opponents to register their protest at polling stations.
Russians are currently casting their ballots in a three-day presidential election.
The voting began on Friday and will continue through Sunday across Russia’s 11 time zones, including illegally annexed regions of Ukraine and online.
The election takes place against the backdrop of a ruthless crackdown that has stifled independent media and prominent rights groups, giving Putin full control of the political system.

Kim Jong Un's Meeting With Putin Raises Concerns Of An Arms Agreement Amid Russia-Ukraine War

President Emmerson Mnangagwa, in his message to commemorate Ukrainian Independence Day, encouraged President Volodymyr Zelensky and the people of Ukraine to uphold their spirit of sovereignty and progress.
Ukrainian Independence Day is celebrated on August 24th each year, commemorating the country’s declaration of independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. It is a day of national pride and unity, marked by flag-raising ceremonies, parades, concerts, and cultural events that celebrate Ukraine’s freedom and sovereignty. Posting on his socials, Mnangagwa said:

The majority of African countries tend to abstain from United Nations resolutions on the matter, with only Eritrea supporting the invasion. These implications contradict his attempts at re-engagement and fail to consider the realities of a country seeking credibility in its claims of sanctions. While Russia is a significant supporter, it is not in a position to fully rescue a nation like Zimbabwe experiencing a severe economic crisis.
Since assuming power in 2017, Mnangagwa has consistently claimed that Zimbabwe is non-aligned, asserting that it is “a friend of all and an enemy to none.” However, some observers find this difficult to believe, particularly in light of his statements and the receipt of a helicopter and 50,000 tonnes of grain from President Vladimir Putin without any cost.

Mnangagwa Urges Zelensky, Ukraine To Uphold Sovereignty In Independence Day Message

Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin is believed to have died in a plane crash that claimed the lives of all passengers on board, according to reports. Russia’s civil aviation authority has stated that Yevgeny Prigozhin was on the passenger list of the crashed jet that resulted in the loss of all lives on board. The Grey Zone Telegram channel, linked to Wagner, reported that the Embraer aircraft was shot down by air defences in the Tver region, north of Moscow.
The private jet, en route from Moscow to St. Petersburg, carried seven passengers and three crew members. Witnesses heard two bangs and saw two vapour trails before the crash, according to Grey Zone.
The plane, identified as an Embraer Legacy belonging to Prigozhin, caught fire upon impact with the ground. The aircraft had been in the air for under 30 minutes.
An investigation is underway, and emergency services are conducting search operations. Another news agency, Ria, reported the recovery of eight bodies. Grey Zone also mentioned that a second business jet owned by Prigozhin landed safely in the Moscow region.
On 23-24 June, the 62-year-old mercenary boss orchestrated a mutiny, relocating his troops from Ukraine, capturing Rostov on Don in southern Russia, and threatening to advance towards Moscow. This action followed prolonged tensions with Russian military commanders regarding the Ukraine conflict. The standoff was resolved through an agreement that allowed Wagner troops to either move to Belarus or join the Russian army.
Although Prigozhin agreed to relocate to Belarus, he has seemingly enjoyed freedom of movement within Russia, appearing in public and releasing a video purportedly filmed in Africa. However, several analysts monitoring Russia have considered him a marked man ever since the mutiny.
President Putin initially responded vehemently to his challenge against Russia’s defence establishment, denouncing it as a betrayal and a stab in the back in a video message on 24 June.

Wagner Boss Yevgeny Prigozhin Believed Dead In Plane Crash

Nelson Chamisa, the main opposition leader in Zimbabwe, has criticised President Emmerson Mnangagwa for accepting a helicopter from Russian President Vladimir Putin and supporting his invasion of Ukraine. Putin recently gifted the helicopter to Zimbabwe, which is currently under heavy sanctions.
Chamisa addressed his supporters at Gadzema Grounds in Chinhoyi and accused Mnangagwa of taking an ill-advised stance in support of Putin’s actions. Chamisa stated that a proper leader of Zimbabwe must not side with any country but should promote peace, unity, progress, and multilateralism.
He criticised Mnangagwa, calling him a puppet of the former Soviet Union and urging him to respect the norms of peace across the world. He said:

My brother (Mnangagwa) was in Russia the other day and was over the moon with joy after receiving a ramshackle helicopter, and he unashamedly declared we, as Zimbabwe, support Russia in its invasion of Ukraine. You and who, whom did you consult?
A proper leader of Zimbabwe must not support or side with any country, but side with peace, side with unity, side with progress and side with multilateralism and unite the belligerent nations, Russia and Ukraine.
Don’t be a puppet, be a person who respects the norms of peace across the whole world and not side with aggression, which is not acceptable.

Chamisa expressed confidence in defeating Mnangagwa in the upcoming presidential election scheduled for 23 August, promising to stamp out corruption, improve job creation and welfare, and restore basic social services like water and roads.

Zimbabwe is currently facing significant economic challenges, with a need for substantial investment to revive its collapsed sectors, including healthcare and industry. The country requires significant funding to rebuild its infrastructure, improve access to basic services, and create employment opportunities. The healthcare system is in dire need of resources, including funding for essential medical equipment, training of healthcare workers, and the provision of adequate medicines and supplies.
The industrial sector needs investment to modernise and develop new technologies, as well as to improve access to finance for small and medium-sized enterprises. Infrastructure development is also crucial, particularly in the areas of energy, water, and transportation, to support economic growth and improve the lives of citizens.

Reactions To President Putin's Donation Of A Helicopter To President Mnangagwa

Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the summit of the BRICS group of nations in South Africa next month.
Putin will be represented at the summit by Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Vincent Magwenya, a spokesman for President Cyril Ramaphosa, said:

By mutual agreement, President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation will not attend the Summit but the Russian Federation will be represented by Foreign Minister, Mr Sergey Lavrov.
</blockquote>
Russian media quoted Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov as saying Putin will participate in the conference – an acronym for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) by video link.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Putin in March for alleged war crimes committed in Ukraine, and South Africa would theoretically be required to arrest him if he were to attend.
South Africa will host the 15th BRICS summit at Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg, from 22-24 August 2023.
The group was formed by Brazil, Russia, India and China in 2019 as BRIC. South Africa joined the following year after an invitation from China, expanding the group.
Ethiopia, Iran and Argentina have also applied to join the bloc.

Putin To Skip BRICS Summit In South Africa After Arrest Warrant

The head of the Russian military contractor Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin has rejected accusations of “treason” by President Vladimir Putin after his fighters crossed from Ukraine into the Russian border city of Rostov-on-Don.
Prigozhin vowed to fight anyone who tried to stop his fighters.
His troops have been fighting in Ukraine on behalf of Moscow and were involved in the battle of Bakhmut and Soledar in eastern Ukraine.
On Saturday, Prigozhin claimed his forces had taken control of military facilities in the city, including the airfield.
Russia’s TASS news agency released videos and pictures showing armed men surrounding administrative buildings in Rostov and tanks deployed in the city centre.
Prigozhin had earlier accused the Russian top brass of having launched an attack on their camps in Ukraine. He said:

All of us are ready to die. All 25 000, and then another 25 000. We are dying for the Russian people.
</blockquote>
In an emergency televised address on Saturday, Putin said that the “armed mutiny” by Wagner amounted to “treason”.
He warned that anyone who had taken up arms against the Russian military would be punished.
The Federal Security Service (FSB) said Prigozhin’s actions were intended to start a civil war and “a stab in the back to Russian servicemen fighting pro-fascist Ukrainian forces”.
On Friday, Prigozhin accused the country’s Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu of ordering a rocket attack on Wagner’s field camps in Ukraine.
He claimed that 2 000 of his fighters had been killed in the blasts.
Prigozhin’s message included a call to action that the Russian government has since interpreted as an appeal to mutiny.
He, however, said his actions did not amount to a military coup but were rather, “a march of justice”.
Yulia Shapovalova, reporting for <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/6/23/russian-authorities-launch-criminal-probe-into-wagner-group">Al Jazeera</a> from Moscow, said Russia’s Ministry of Defence issued a statement claiming that Ukraine was taking advantage of the Wagner chief’s “provocation” and had launched an offensive in the direction of Bakhmut city. Said Shapovalova:

Wagner Group Chief Rejects Putin’s Accusations Of Treason

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday said an “armed mutiny” by the Wagner Group is treason, adding that “decisive action” will be taken against them.
This comes after the head of Russia’s Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, claimed that his fighters have seized “all military facilities” in the southern city of Rostov-on-Don.
On Friday, Prigozhin accused Russian troops of launching a rocket attack that killed scores of his fighters, a claim denied by Moscow.
The authorities in Moscow and the surrounding area say they have declared a “counterterrorism” and Russia’s FSB security service has opened a criminal case against Prigozhin for the armed mutiny.
Speaking during an emergency televised address in Moscow on Saturday, Putin said Russia will not slip into civil war:

I appeal to the citizens of Russia, to the personnel of the armed forces, law enforcement and security services, fighters and commanders currently fighting on their positions, repelling the enemy attacks, doing it heroically.
I spoke to the commanders in all directions last night. I appeal also to those who were deceptively pulled into the criminal adventure, pushed towards a serious crime of an armed mutiny.
Today Russia is fighting fiercely for its future, repelling the aggression of neo-Nazis and their handlers.
Directed against us is the whole military, economical and information machines of the West.
We fight for the lives and security of our people; for our sovereignty and independence; for the right to remain Russia, a state with a thousand-year history.
This battle, where the fate of our people is being decided, requires all our forces to be united; unity, consolidation and responsibility.
Everything that weakens us must be put to the side, any differences that may be used or are used by our enemies to disrupt us from within.
Thus, the actions splitting our unity are a betrayal of our people, of our brothers in combat who fight now at the front line. It’s a stab in the back of our country and our people.
It was such a blow that was dealt to Russia in 1917 when the country was fighting in World War I, but its victory was stolen.
Intrigues, bickering and politicking behind the back of the army and the people turned out to be the greatest catastrophe, the destruction of the army and the state, loss of huge territories, resulting in a tragedy and a civil war.
Russians were killing Russians, brothers killing brothers. The beneficiaries of that were various political chevaliers of fortune and foreign powers who divided the country and tore it into parts.
We will not let this happen again. We will protect our people and state from any threats, including internal betrayal. What we’re facing is exactly a betrayal.
Big ambitions and personal interests led to treason. Betrayal of one’s own country and people and of the cause that fighters of Wagner were dying for alongside our soldiers.
Heroes who liberated Soledar and Artemovsk, towns and cities of the Donbas, who fought and gave their lives to Novorossiya and for the unity of the Russian world.
Their name and glory have been betrayed by those who are trying to organise the mutiny, pushing the country into anarchy and fratricide, to a defeat, in the end, and capitulation.
I repeat: any internal mutiny is a deadly threat to our state, to us as a nation. It’s a blow against Russia, against our people. And our actions to defend the fatherland from such a threat will be brutal.
Anyone who consciously went on the path of betrayal, who prepared the armed mutiny, went on the path of blackmail and terrorist actions, will be punished inevitably. They will answer before the law and our people.
The armed forces and other departments have received the necessary orders. Additional anti-terrorist security measures are now being implemented in Moscow, Moscow region, and a number of other regions.
Decisive actions will be taken to stabilise the situation in Rostov-on-Don, which still remains difficult.
The operation of civilian and military control departments is practically blocked.
As a president of Russia and the commander-in-chief, as a citizen of Russia, I will do everything to defend the country, protect the Constitution, lives and safety, liberty of the citizens.
Those who organised and prepared the military mutiny, who turned weapons against their comrades-in-arms, have betrayed Russia and will be held accountable for that.
And those who are being pulled into the crime, I’m calling on you to not make this crucial, tragic, unrepeatable mistake.
Make the only right choice – stop participating in criminal actions.
I believe that we will defend and preserve what’s sacred for us. And together with the motherland, we will overcome all challenges and become even stronger.

President Putin Vows "Brutal" Response To Wagner Group Mutiny

A senior member of South Africa’s main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, has threatened to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin if comes to South Africa.
Western Cape Premier, Alan Winde, said he will arrest Putin if he “sets foot in the Western Cape” and is prepared to face whatever consequences for his stance.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Winde said if Putin does come to South Africa for the BRICS summit in August, the Western Cape will set its law enforcement officers on him. He said:

If the Russian leader sets foot in the Western Cape, we, as the provincial government, will have him arrested by our own Western Cape Government-funded Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) officers. If the South African Police Service is not instructed to act, we will.

Winde said the Western Cape will arrest Putin in solidarity with the people of Ukraine.
Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and millions of Ukrainians have fled the country and are now refugees in several European countries.
Tens of thousands of students who were attending universities in Ukraine were also forced to flee amid the chaos and blaring air raids warning sirens.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) last month issued an arrest warrant against Putin for alleged war crimes committed in Ukraine.
Kremlin is accused of unlawfully deporting Ukrainian children and separating them from their families.
The warrant against Putin in March means Pretoria, due to host the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) bloc summit this year, would have to detain him on arrival.
The South African government has not said whether it will arrest Putin if he comes to the August summit.
In an interview with Newzroom Afrika on Thursday, Winde criticised the Government of President Cyril Ramaphosa for not stating what will happen to Putin if he comes to South Africa. He said:

I am very happy to make it quite clear in this province, that if Vladimir Putin comes into this province later in the year, I will do whatever is necessary, and we will follow through and make sure that he is arrested and faces his day in court with the ICC.

OHCHR has estimated the number of deaths of civilians, or non-armed individuals, in Ukraine at over 8 500 thousand since the start of the war on 24 February 2022.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) is a judicial body whose mandate is to prosecute individuals for genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression.
The ICC only has jurisdiction over these crimes when they are committed by individuals who are nationals of or whose crimes occurred on the territory of a state party to the Rome Statute, or if the United Nations Security Council refers a case to the ICC.

Western Cape Premier Threatens To Arrest Vladimir Putin

Former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, has claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin “sort of threatened” him with a missile attack shortly before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022.
According to a new BBC documentary to be aired on Monday evening, the threat was made in a phone call conducted when the Russian attack on Ukraine was increasingly becoming inevitable. Said Johnson:

He (Putin) sort of threatened me at one point and said, ‘Boris, I don’t want to hurt you, but with a missile, it would only take a minute’, or something like that.
</blockquote>
Johnson and other Western leaders were trying to dissuade Russia from attacking Ukraine and the British PM emerged as one of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s strongest supporters.
Before the invasion, Johnson claimed he was at pains to tell Putin that there was no imminent prospect of Ukraine joining NATO.
He warned the Russian President that any invasion would mean “more NATO, not less NATO” on Russia’s borders. Said Johnson:

He said, ‘Boris, you say that Ukraine is not going to join NATO any time soon. ‘What is any time soon?’
And I said, ‘well it’s not going to join NATO for the foreseeable future. You know that perfectly well’.

Former UK Prime Minister Claims Putin Threatened To Kill Him In Missile Strike

Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent a warship towards the Atlantic and Indian oceans armed with new hypersonic Zircon cruise missiles, which he said were unique worldwide, reported Al Jazeera.
Putin confirmed the development in a video conference with defence minister Sergei Shoigu and Igor Krokhmal, commander of the frigate named Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov.
He said the ship was armed with Zircon hypersonic weapons. Said Putin:

This time the ship is equipped with the latest hypersonic missile system – Zircon – which has no analogues.
I would like to wish the crew of the ship success in their service for the good of the motherland.
</blockquote>
Shoigu added that the hypersonic missiles, known as either Tsirkon or Zircon, could overcome any missile defence system.
He also said the missiles fly at nine times the speed of sound and have a range of more than 1 000km.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, said that Patriot air defence systems are expected to be deployed in Ukraine soon.
He said preparations for transferring the Patriot air defence systems from the United States of America have already begun.
On 21 December, US President Joe Biden announced a $1.85bn military aid package for Ukraine, including a Patriot missile defence system.
Ukraine is also expecting the US Congress to approve another package of almost $45 billion.

Putin Sends A Warship Equipped With Hypersonic Weapons To Atlantic

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday warned of a “global catastrophe” if NATO troops directly clashed with the Russian army in Ukraine.
Speaking in Kazakhstan’s capital Astana where he attended the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), Putin said:

In any case, direct contact, a direct clash of (NATO) troops with the Russian army is a very dangerous move which could lead to a global catastrophe.
I hope that those who are saying this are smart enough not to take such a step.

Earlier, Putin had warned that he would use nuclear weapons to defend Russian territory after annexing four regions of Ukraine last month, a move condemned by the United Nations.
On Tuesday, the Group of Seven (G7) nations (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US) warned that the use of nuclear weapons on Ukraine will have severe consequences.
Leaders of G7 states (the UK, Germany, Italy, Canada, the US, France, and Japan) said:

Putin Warns Of "Global Catastrophe" If NATO, Russian Troops Clash Directly

Russia has reiterated that its nuclear doctrine is self-explanatory, with top Russian officials repeatedly stating that the conflict in Ukraine does not meet any of its criteria. 
The statement followed US President Joe Biden’s threat of a harsh, “consequential” response should Russia use weapons of mass destruction.
Speaking to RIA Novosti on Saturday when asked about the possibility of Russia using nuclear weapons in Ukraine, Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said:

Read the doctrine, everything is written there.
</blockquote>
According to Russia’s nuclear posture, Moscow reserves the right to use atomic weapons only:
<blockquote>
a). “in response to the use of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction against Russia or 
b). its allies,” as well as “in response to a conventional attack that threatens the very existence” of Russia as a sovereign state.

The latest update to the doctrine, made in 2020, clarified two more scenarios for the possible use of nuclear arms: 
<blockquote>
i). receiving “credible information about the launch of ballistic missiles” targeting the territory of Russia or its allies, or 
ii). an attack “on critical infrastructure that controls nuclear weapons,” potentially rendering the deterrent inoperable.

In mid-August, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu also dismissed as “absurd” claims that Moscow might use nukes in Ukraine, saying there are no targets there that would warrant doing so.
