The grandmother of a <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/a-9-year-old-pregnant-girl-admitted-to-ubh/">9-year-old Tsholotsho girl</a> who recently <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/9-year-old-tsholotsho-girl-gives-birth-to-baby-girl/">gave birth</a> at United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) has defended her detained son who was accused of raping and impregnating the girl – his daughter.
The 29-year-old was <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/update-9-year-old-pregnant-girl-doesnt-know-shes-pregnant-father-arrested/">arrested on 29 August 2022</a> when it was discovered that the minor was pregnant.
The paternal grandmother of the girl said she was disturbed by accusations levelled against her son, saying as a family they had faced stigma within the community. <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/no-bad-blood-between-us-families-of-9-year-old-mum-13-year-old-dad/">The Sunday News</a> cites her as saying:

My son was accused of evil things and I wonder where people got it from. I am surprised that there is a goblin that is being talked about, where is all that coming from? We are worried that such reports are being made. Do you know that I could not go to the well to fetch water in the village because of the stigma? I never attended school meetings because of the accusations against my son, all eyes were on us in this village. I am happy the truth is finally out that he did not rape his child.

When we were told of the bulging stomach, we assumed she was just sick, nothing more, we encouraged the mother to take her to hospital to seek help. We were not very shocked initially when the stomach bulged because we had never imagined that a child could get pregnant. So, we actually assumed other things like witchcraft, fibroids and not pregnancy. We even prayed so much and she got prayers from other people trying to assist the ‘sick’ child. We all never imagined that she could be pregnant hence it was discovered too late at seven months and there was nothing we could do about it.

There were reports that the minor girl had told counsellors that her father had told her that goblins would come in through the window at night and rape her, sentiments that have since been dismissed by the family. 
Meanwhile, deoxyribonucleic acid tests (DNA) conducted last month confirmed that a 13-year-old boy impregnated his nine-year-old cousin.
The two families also belong to the same clan and they say there is no bad blood between the two families. 
The paternal grandmother of the girl said she hoped the minor would be separated from the newly-born child since she still needs to return to school. She added that the girl would be given the baby back when she is old enough to understand what happened.

Grandmother Of 9-year-old Girl Who Gave Birth Defends Her Detained Son

New details have emerged in the case of a<a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/update-9-year-old-pregnant-girl-doesnt-know-shes-pregnant-father-arrested/"> pregnant nine-year-old girl</a> from Masekesa village in Tsholotsho under Chief Gampu amid indications that the family lived with a young male relative.
Chief Gampu has called for the interrogation of the young man emphasising that he was not accusing the man. 
The traditional leader said the young man left a few months ago allegedly to seek employment in Dogwe village, one of the villages in the district. <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/new-details-emerge-on-the-pregnant-tsholotsho-girl-mystery/">The Chronicle</a> quotes Chief Gampu as saying:

I am not at all saying the young man is responsible for what happened, neither am I saying the father did not but it is known that the family was living with a young relative who I believe is related to the girl’s mother and maybe the police may actually want to interview him as well, just like they did to the father.

The traditional leader said society was expected to protect young, innocent children instead of exposing them to such heinous acts.
He said he was going to spearhead awareness campaigns in his area of jurisdiction and encouraged other traditional leaders to also embark on such programmes so as to encourage and inform people about concerns related to child abuse while encouraging them to speak out against such vices.
The young girl who was just eight years old when she fell pregnant, with suspicions that she was raped, is set to give birth through a cesarean delivery on November 17 at United Bulawayo Hospitals.
The incident led to the <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/update-9-year-old-pregnant-girl-doesnt-know-shes-pregnant-father-arrested/">arrest of the girl’s biological father</a> (29) who allegedly warned his daughter that “goblins will visit her at night and insert something in her private parts.”

New Details Emerge on 9-year-old Pregnant Zimbabwean Girl

The father (29) of the <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/a-9-year-old-pregnant-girl-admitted-to-ubh/">9-year-old pregnant girl</a> was arrested on 29 August 2022 when it was discovered that the minor was pregnant and is assisting police with investigations. 
He allegedly told his daughter that “goblins will visit her at night and insert something in her private parts.”
The goblins that the father forewarned his daughter about, are alleged to have visited the nine-year-old only on nights that her mother was away from home and was left in the care of her father. 
The mother told <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/mother-of-pregnant-9-year-old-opens-up/">The Sunday News</a> that what pains her most was that her daughter was not aware that she is pregnant, but believes she is suffering from some stomach ailment. 
In an exclusive interview with Sunday News in Bulawayo on Friday, the girl’s mother (26) revealed that her daughter started her monthly menstrual cycle when she was just seven years old in 2020. She said:

She does not know what is wrong with her, that she is pregnant. The last time I saw her she asked me if I would take her home once she heals from her sickness, as that is what she knows. I started to see her menstruating in 2020 she was seven years old then and I took her to the clinic to find out what the cause could have been. They told me that it was possible for her to menstruate early owing to the foods children eat nowadays. We returned home, and then this year (August), I noticed that her stomach was swelling and took her to the hospital once more and there it was discovered that she was pregnant. I was not expecting that she could be pregnant because it is actually a shock and something foreign to us that a nine-year-old child can fall pregnant.

The mother said her daughter has not yet spoken about what happened to her. 
The girl was attending school from the beginning of this year but sometimes would not get to school and would return home and say she was chased away from school, the mother added.
The girl who is 33 weeks pregnant is at United Bulawayo Hospitals where she is being monitored.

Update: 9-year-old Pregnant Girl "Doesn't Know She's Pregnant", Father Arrested

A nine-year-old girl is admitted to the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) as she is 33 weeks pregnant and is expected to give birth at the institution.
This comes a few weeks after a 13-year-old girl from Mkhosana Township in Victoria Falls wrote part of her ZIMSEC Grade Seven <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/grade-7-pupil-gives-birth-writes-exam-from-maternity-ward/">examinations on a hospital bed soon after giving birth</a> at Victoria Falls Hospital. 
In the Victoria Falls case, the girl was not aware that she was pregnant until a month before giving birth.
The UBH case has seen the nine-year-old, who is about one month away from giving birth, being monitored by a team of specialist doctors and nurses owing to the delicate nature of the pregnancy.
Reports have indicated that the nine-year-old is from Tsholotsho District in Matabeleland North Province.
Officials from the Department of Social Welfare in the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare are investigating the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy. 
Sources claimed she could have been raped and impregnated by a “close person”, hence the investigations that also involve the police.
The girl actually conceived when she was eight years old, <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/shocker-nine-year-old-girl-8-months-pregnant/">The Sunday News</a> reported citing UBH’s acting chief executive officer of the institution, Dr Harrison Rambanapasi.
This was made possible by a rare condition of precocious puberty (development of sexual maturation earlier than the normal age). Dr Rambanapasi said ordinarily puberty should start at 11 years.
Online research revealed that the youngest mother in world history was a five year- old Peruvian who gave birth via an operation on 14 May 1939.
Reports said that based on the medical assessments of her pregnancy, she was less than five years old when she became pregnant, which was due to precocious puberty. 
Dr Rambanapasi said physically a nine-year-old is not prepared for sexual intercourse and will be very traumatic because the body has not developed enough.

A 9-year-old Pregnant Girl Admitted To UBH

The United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) has suspended a nurse from a training programme after a pregnancy test returned a false-positive result. Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) have since written to the institution asking that the suspended nurse be reinstated. Pindula presents ZLHR’s statement on the matter.
<blockquote>Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) has asked United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) to reinstate a nurse who was suspended from a training programme after a pregnancy test returned a false-positive result.
Authorities at UBH on 17 May 2021, suspended Sibongikosi Jacoline Dube from participating in a nurse training programme after a pregnancy test conducted on her as a requirement of the programme reportedly returned a positive result.
In a letter written to UBH Chief Executive Officer Dr Narcisius Dzvanga, Jabulani Mhlanga of ZLHR protested against the discrimination and ill-treatment of the aspiring nurse.
Mhlanga said Dube had advised him that on the day the pregnancy test was taken, a certain Ms. S Moyo had informed the group of nursing trainees of a “mix-up” in the test results conducted at a UBH laboratory.
Mhlanga said after receiving the pregnancy results Dube conducted a self-test whose results were negative and she informed officials at UBH of this development. 
Dube, Mhlanga said, also undertook further testing at Mpilo Central Hospital and the results were negative.
But despite the outcome of the second set of the pregnancy test results and numerous engagements with some UBH officials as well as some officials from the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Dube has not been reinstated to continue with the nurse training programme.
Mhlanga charged that the decision taken by UBH to keep Dube out of the training programme was grossly unreasonable and unfair and in violation of section 68 of the Constitution, which provides for the right to administrative justice and also in violation of section 3 of the Administrative Justice Act.
The human rights lawyer said UBH’s policy is contrary to the national objectives of the Constitution in particular section 17 which provides that the State must promote the full participation of women in all spheres of the Zimbabwean society on the basis of equality with men.
Furthermore, Mhlanga said section 56 of the Constitution affords women to enjoy the right to equal treatment including the right to equal opportunities in political, economic, cultural and social spheres and prohibits unfair treatment or discrimination on the grounds of pregnancy.
Mhlanga asked UBH to reinstate Dube to continue with the nurse training programme with immediate effect and also urgently align its policy to the provisions of the Constitution.
The human rights lawyer said if UBH fails to respond favourably to Dube’s request, he will institute legal proceedings against the state-run hospital to assert and protect her constitutionally enshrined rights.
UBH is yet to respond to Mhlanga’s letter.</blockquote>
