An unemployed Masvingo university graduate has created her own employment and is making a living by doing people’s laundry.
Prudence Paradza, 25, has yet to secure a formal job after graduating with an Honours Degree in Development Studies from Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) in Masvingo in 2023.
Speaking to <a href="https://tellzim.com/graduate-makes-living-through-washing-peoples-clothes/">TellZim News</a>, Paradza decided she could no longer continue burdening her parents who had other responsibilities and came up with this idea. She said:

After graduation, I discovered that it was difficult to secure employment and I saw that I could not continue burdening my parents so I realised that I could use the home washing machine to make a few dollars. I have since realised that it’s paying off.
I do washing, folding, ironing, steaming and removing stains on clothes. Since I do not have a scale, I do charge per load, which consists of 20-25 items which I charge US$8.
I use my washing powder and fabric softener but if the client has their own they want me to use then I use that.
</blockquote>
Paradza is currently operating from home in Mucheke B but she said if she gets more customers, she will consider renting a new place in town. She said:

The business is running smoothly, I have many clients and am currently operating from home but I am looking forward to getting a place in town.
I have discovered that some clients are not comfortable bringing their clothes at home so I think getting a place in town will make it easy for them.
It feels good knowing that you don’t depend on anyone and it gives you the courage to keep pushing. I am prepared to put in extra effort so that I can make my hustle bigger.
Some clients are not comfortable bringing their clothes to Mucheke, that’s why I am pushing so that I can operate in town, Electricity is another challenge as I am forced to wash during the night when electricity is back.

Approximately 30,000 students graduate annually from Zimbabwe’s institutions of higher learning but due to the country’s economic challenges, many graduates struggle to find jobs that match their skills or meet their expectations.

University Graduate Makes A Living Through Washing People’s Clothes

Mt Pleasant Member of Parliament <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Fadzayi_Mahere">Fadzayi Mahere</a> (CCC), has said Higher Education, Science and Technology Development Minister Amon Murwira is “out of touch with the depth of the unemployment crisis” in Zimbabwe.
Murwira recently told parliamentarians that unemployed graduates should not seek jobs but rather create their own businesses. He said:
<blockquote>
We nolonger talk of brain drain but brain circulation. We will not construct people who work for other people. The issue of graduating and seeking employement should be a thing of the past.
We want to change the mentality now. You need to go to school and put to use what you learnt not sleep at home and wait for employment. Those were colonial industries, let us start our own.
</blockquote>
In response, Mahere, who is also the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Higher Education, Science and Technology Development, said:
<blockquote>
Regrettably, the Minister of Higher Education once again shows how out of touch he is with the depth of the unemployment crisis, the realities of Zimbabwe’s job market, the state of our economy and the needs of higher education graduates.
In most professions, the regulatory bodies don’t permit graduates to assume self-employment upon graduation.
He appears ignorant of the professional rules that govern the graduates he is churning out which is disturbing.
Doctors, lawyers, accountants &amp; engineers, for example, can’t just start up on their own. They have to first be employed for a set number of years before they can practice for their own account.
How does he expect such graduates not to seek employment? It’s ludicrous.
Zimbabwe has the highest unemployment rate in the region. The latest figures show that we are faced with over 85% unemployment.
This is clear evidence of a comatose economy, a shrinking formal sector and the disintegration of industry.
Graduates have been reduced to vending tomatoes because the economy does not work. He fails to make the connection or see the relatedness between the broken economy and the unemployment crisis.
There is an urgent need to stop the rhetoric, analyze the data, listen to key stakeholders and review Education 5.0.
Except for in The Herald and in his own head, the higher education system in Zimbabwe is not working.
The Minister ignores analytics at his peril. Lip service is paid to the notions of technology and innovation yet the reality on the ground shows that most universities and tertiary colleges lack efficient internet access, stable electricity and adequate water – not to mention the adverse impact of student poverty.
Propaganda can never fix the crisis – that’s the mentality that has to change!

Mahere said Murwira has been employed “his whole life” and has no authority to tell graduates to start their own business ventures. She said:
<blockquote>
How does someone who is employed by the taxpayer predominantly to create an ecosystem that ensures students are fit for employment stand up in the august house to say that seeking employment should be a thing of the past?
Has he not been employed his whole life? Why didn’t he start his own thing instead of seeking employment?

Mahere Ridicules Minister Murwira's Call For Unemployed Graduates To Establish Industries

Higher and Tertiary Education Minister <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Amon_Murwira">Amon Murwira</a> said that unemployed graduates must create their own opportunities, rather than seek jobs.
Speaking during a Question and Answer session in Parliament recently, Murwira said that Zimbabwe was changing the philosophy of why people enroll at institutions of learning.
He said Zimbabwe is not suffering a brain drain but experiencing brain circulation, adding that graduates should ditch the colonial mindset whereby people were educated to be employed.
Responding to a question about the Government’s position with regards to brain drain due to a lack of job opportunities, Murwira said, as quoted by <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/brain-circulation-not-drain-argues-minister-murwira-tells-unemployed-graduates-to-create-opportunities-for-themselves/">NewZimbabwe.com</a>:
<blockquote>
Zimbabwe will continue training people and we are also changing the philosophy of why we go to school.
We go to school in order to be able to use our knowledge and skills and attitudes to start new enterprises.
We should no longer talk about brain drain. We talk about brain circulation.
We will be able to train our people so that they are useful to us either locally or elsewhere and they will be able to do things and be able to be useful to the country.
This is a deep philosophy that diverts from the philosophy of going to school to be employed by the colonial master, kuzvishandira, kwete kushandiswa.
Brain drain assumes that the pot that is cooking people has stopped cooking. We will continue cooking our people in our higher and tertiary education institutions.
Hativapedzi, ticharamba tichi trainer vanhu to the extent that these days what they call brain drain is actually brain circulation because we can still use our people wherever they are.
</blockquote>
He said the Government will create an environment that allows graduates to start their own industries and also provide them with venture capital. Said Murwira:
<blockquote>
When the education trains them how to be able to make things; how to be able to form industries and how to be able to work for themselves, our duty will be to provide them with the correct policy environment so that they are able to do so.
Also, how to provide them with the venture fund so that they have the finances. We shall not construct people who work for other people.
</blockquote>
He also said the Government has engaged neighbouring countries to export skilled graduates in an organised manner.
