<p>The Federation of Zimbabwe Educators Unions (FOZEU), a collective of radical teachers’ unions, has issued a call to action for all teachers in Zimbabwe. </p>
<p>Beginning on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, they are urging teachers to participate in a 3-day job strike in response to the government’s recent US$20 wage increase, which they consider a mere “mockery”.</p>
<p>FOZEU said no teacher should report for duty from March 20 to March 22, 2024, and that the mass action will continue until the government pays a living wage. Reads the statement:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>The Federation of Zimbabwe Educators Unions, FOZEU, a collective of radical teachers’ unions is calling on all teachers in Zimbabwe to embark on a 3 day Job action beginning Wednesday 20 March 2024.</p>
<p>Following the conclusion of consulting teachers on a fight-back strategy in the face of the mockery of a USD20 increment, we update our constituency as follows;</p>
<p>A total of 56 700 teachers were consulted both offline and online. 55 220 of the consulted teachers asked FOZEU to call for a Job action before Schools close and mobilise for an indefinite national trike when Schools open for 2nd term.</p>
<p>Some of the grievances which came from the teachers during consultations included the incapacity to pay examination fees for children because of inadequate salaries which is ironic for teachers who work to prepare children for examinations whilst their own children fail to sit for the same examinations.</p>
<p>The Federation hereby declares that;</p>
<p>1. No teacher should report for duty from Wednesday 20 March 2024 to Friday 22 March 2024</p>
<p>2. The mass action is to be escalated as the second term opens until the employer pays a living wage.</p>
<p>3. FOZEU leaders to engage other progressive unions in the Civil Service seeking collaborations in the fight for a living wage.</p>
<p>4. Deadlines for registration for sitting for Public Examinations be extended until the Salary Crisis is resolved.</p>
<p>FOZEU stands ready to provide legal assistance to all teachers who may face victimisation during the coming job action.</p>
<p>The Federation calls upon teachers to mobilise each other at classroom level to make this job action a success.</p>
<p>The employer has to be forced to pay a living wage of USD1 260, teachers are encouraged to seize this opportunity to apply pressure on the employer by completely withdrawing labour.</p>
<p>The Constitution of Zimbabwe provides for the right to Strike and picket.</p>

Zimbabwean Teachers To Embark On 3-Day Job Action To Demand Fair Wages

<p>Striking Teachers have vowed to continue with their strike as they said the 40% salary increment is just meant to hoodwink them but it is not enough.</p>
<p>In a letter addressed to the striking teachers from the Zimbabwe Teachers Association (ZIMTA), teachers were urged to remain strong:</p>
<blockquote><p>Dear Teachers</p>
<p>Good afternoon dear comrades and friends, we write to tell you that tomorrow we are escalating our campaign for better salaries and allowances. We call upon all bona-fide members and sympathizers to join in the chorus of better salaries.</p>
<p>We have refused to acknowledge the 40% offer meant to hoodwink us into believing that we have received an increase, nothing is further from reality than this. For your negotiators to get into the meeting tomorrow October 5, 2020, strong, galvanized and with unshaken resolve, they need to know they have you behind in support. If you are in, raise up your hand. I am in the struggle, are you?<br/>
We thank all our members who are in the trenches and encourage them to remain there until victory. For the undecided, we invite you to stand up and be counted support us to fight well and to those playing cat and mouse game, playing clock in and disappear we ask you to be bold. Make that unequivocal statement and stay home. Membership power is what counts.</p>
<p>Let’s all make that declaration of incapacitation loud and clear. Meanwhile, we will hear what the author.. have for educators tomorrow.</p>

FULL TEXT: Teachers To Continue With Their Strike As They Reject The 40% Salary Increment

<p>Various teachers’ unions have expressed dissatisfaction with their lot and have gone as far as threatening to embark an on-go slow ahead of the second school term which opens on Tuesday this week.</p>
<p>Teachers have cited poor salaries, which have been decimated by galloping inflation.<br/>
In an interview with <em><strong>Newsday</strong></em> on Sunday, Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) secretary-general, Raymond Majongwe, said:</p>
<blockquote><p>No person will ever lead a war without counting whether his soldiers are in the barracks or not. So, we are simply going back to school to make sure that we create a strategy that must take us forward.</p>
<p>Our salaries have just gone below US$80 and we are talking of people here who are degreed.</p>
<p>People have families to take care of, but it seems the government seems to be insensitive or they are busy looking somewhere else.</p>
<p>The painful part is we have patriotic teachers who want to turn up for duty, but it is almost impossible we are going back to exactly where the circle started.<br/>
Teachers are incapacitated.</p></blockquote>
<p>Both the Amalgamated Rural Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe president, Obert Masaraure, and Zimbabwe Teachers Association chief executive officer, Sifiso Ndlovu, have accused the government of failing to fulfil its promises, especially the issue of duty-free cars.</p>

Teachers 'Angry' Over Poor Salaries Ahead Of 2nd Term

<p>Members of the Amalgamated Rural Teachers’  Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) appeared in court today facing charges of disorderly conduct in contravention of Section 41(a) of the Criminal Law (Codification&amp;Reform) Act for allegedly blocking a road in Ruwa while holding and waving placards during an anti-govt protest against poor salaries.</p>
<p>The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) said that the Union president Obert Masaraure and others have been released and the State will proceed by way of summons.</p>
<blockquote><p>The State will proceed by way of summons if they intend to prosecute ARTUZ President Obert Masaraure for convening an unsanctioned gathering after conceding that ARTUZ is included in the class of groups that can gather without giving notice to the regulating authority (ZRP).</p></blockquote>

Striking Rural Teachers Released, State To Proceed By Way Of Summons

<p>Police in Ruwa arrested the Amalgamated Rural Teachers’ Union Of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) leaders yesterday. This comes after nine Union leaders were arrested by the police in Macheke on Saturday for criminal nuisance. However, <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/12/17/protesting-teachers-freed-after-state-refuses-to-prosecute/"><strong>they were released after the state found no basis for prosecuting them</strong></a>. Human Rights lawyer Douglas Coltart said</p>
<blockquote><p>This regime is unbelievable! ARTUZ teachers have been arrested again on their #MarchToHarare! On Monday, the State admitted the charges were baseless and dropped after they’d been arrested by Macheke police on Saturday. Now they’ve been arrested again by Ruwa police.</p></blockquote>
<p>The Caravan has now been in the final lap of the 275km of the protest march. In a statement yesterday, ARTUZ said that they will arrive in Harare today, December 19.</p>
