Zimbabwean-born billionaire Strive Masiyiwa has been named among the Top 10 richest black people in the world in 2024.
According to the Forbes real-time index as of October 10, 2024, Masiyiwa was the 10th richest black person in the world.
The list also includes Aliko Dangote, a multi-sector investor in Nigeria, and David Steward, co-founder of World Wide Technology (WWT). Below are the 10 richest black people in the world:

Tanya Masiyiwa, the daughter of Zimbabwean billionaire Strive Masiyiwa, recently tied the knot with her South African partner, Lethabo Molobi.
The couple’s white wedding followed their traditional ceremony on 23 December 2023 in South Africa, reported <a href="https://iharare.com/watch-billionaire-strive-masiyiwa-walks-his-daughter-tanya-down-the-aisle-on-her-grand-wedding/">iHarare</a>.
At the ceremony, the Zimbabwean billionaire walked her daughter down the aisle with his face radiating with joy as he gave her away to the love of her life.
The lovers exchanged vows and kissed passionately as guests cheered and ululated.
The guests then proceeded to the reception where they were entertained with fun dance moves.

Lethabo is a biokineticist, a founder of The Medics, a board member of the Biokinetics Association of South Africa, and a former professional basketball player.
Tanya is a humanitarian and social entrepreneur, and the founder and executive director of Emerging Leaders Foundation, a non-profit organisation that provides leadership training and mentorship to young Africans.

According to Forbes, Masiyiwa’s net worth has surged by $600 million, largely due to the impressive performance of his diversified investment portfolio spanning various industries, such as telecommunications and technology. At the start of the year, his fortune was valued at $1.2 billion, but due to the strong performance of his broad assets, managed through his technology group, Econet Global, his net worth has now soared to $1.8 billion.
This recent increase has solidified Masiyiwa’s position as one of Africa’s richest businessmen and one of the world’s Black Billionaires, alongside prominent figures such as Jay-Z, Oprah Winfrey, Robert F. Smith, Patrice Motsepe, and Abdul Samad Rabiu.
The surge in Masiyiwa’s net worth can be attributed in large part to the outstanding growth of his publicly traded businesses on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange, particularly Econet Zimbabwe and EcoCash Holdings. Masiyiwa’s net worth dropped by $1.5 billion last year, but it has now rebounded due to an increase in the share prices of his publicly traded companies on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE), specifically <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Econet_Wireless_Zimbabwe">Econet Zimbabwe</a> and <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/EcoCash">EcoCash Holdings</a>.
According to Forbes, Masiyiwa has seen his net worth increase by $800 million since the start of 2023 from $1.2 billion at the start of the year to $2 billion as of April 5, <a href="https://billionaires.africa/2023/04/05/strive-masiyiwa-zimbabwes-wealthiest-man-bounces-back-with-800-million-net-worth-increase/">Billionaires Africa</a> reported.
The strong rebound in his net worth cements his position as one of Africa’s richest billionaires and also one of the world’s 19 Black billionaires.
Masiyiwa’s billion-dollar fortune comes partly from owning a 52.85% share in Econet Zimbabwe, which is the top telecommunications service provider in the country, and a 30% share in EcoCash Holdings, a company that offers mobile money transfer services.
Through his interest in Econet Global Limited, a diversified telecom group with operations and investments in Africa, Europe, South America, and the East Asia-Pacific Rim, the Zimbabwean billionaire also has a $145 million stake in Liquid Intelligent Technologies.
Since the beginning of the year, the share price of Econet Zimbabwe had risen by 160.37 per cent, from ZWL96.28 ($0.30) on January 1 to ZWL250.68 ($0.78) as of April 5.
The share price of EcoCash Holdings had increased by 69.55 per cent, from ZWL40.081 ($0.12) to ZWL67.96 ($0.21) as of April 5.

Strive Masiyiwa Now Among The World’s Top 20 Black Billionaires

Twenty-eight-year-old Vimbai Masiyiwa has said she emulates her father, Strive Masiyiwa, the founder of Econet Wireless.
Vimbai is the executive director of Batoka Hospitality, the first black, female-owned safari lodge group in Africa.
She and her mother, Tsitsi Masiyiwa, founded Batoka Hospitality, a luxury eco-tourism and community development group. Their latest project, the Zambezi Sands River Lodge, is a safari lodge located at the western end of the Zambezi National Park and will open in June. The project focuses on community-led initiatives centred around women’s empowerment.
She had worked with her father for some years, starting as an intern at 14, throughout her university years and working as a special assistant for him until almost two years ago when she fully stepped into her role at Batoka.
She says she’s learnt from her dad to be a great listener, and says her father always hears people out and then says his piece. Vimbai told <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/https-www-newzimbabwe-com-vimbai-masiyiwa-uplifts-local-communities-through-her-safari-lodge-group/">NewZimbabwe</a>:

Vimbai has lived in Zimbabwe, South Africa and the United Kingdom (UK), and is currently based in the UK and the US. 
Strive Masiyiwa is a prominent Zimbabwean businessman, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. He also sits on several respectable boards which include the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, National Geographic, Unilever, and Netflix. He has been on The Rockefeller Foundation and is the only African member of the United States Holocaust Memorial. Vimbai Masiyiwa Says She Emulates Her Father

Bill Gates’ Microsoft, has partnered with <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Strive_Masiyiwa">Strive Masiyiwa</a>‘s Liquid Intelligent Technologies, to provide Internet access to 20 million underserved people in Africa by 2025.
The collaboration will make use of Microsoft’s Airband project to focus on places like Tanzania, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, <a href="https://billionaires.africa/2023/03/03/microsoft-joins-forces-with-strive-masiyiwas-liquid-to-bring-internet-to-underserved-african-communities/">Billionaires Africa</a> reports.
The objective of the partnership between Bill Gates’ Microsoft and Masiyiwa’s Liquid is to bring high-speed Internet connectivity to previously unconnected communities while bridging the digital divide.
The partnership seeks to extend high-speed internet to rural areas in Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, as well as to underserved communities throughout Africa.
Liquid’s most recent action is a continuation of prior endeavours, such as the November 2022 announcement of a ground-breaking investment of over R350 million ($19.7 million) in a Software Defined Network (SDN) solution called Dataport Across Africa.
This SDN offering will be the first of its kind on the continent.
Liquid, a division of Cassava Technologies, has invested more than $1.5 billion in network infrastructure to become the first provider of Dataport services in Africa.
Under Masiyiwa’s leadership, Liquid’s cloud solutions have seen tremendous growth with a presence in more than 20 countries, primarily in Sub-Saharan Africa. 
Masiyiwa is a Zimbabwean billionaire who sits on the boards of Unilever Plc, Netflix, Bank of America, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Bill Gates' Microsoft Partners With Strive Masiyiwa's Liquid

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Econet_Wireless_Zimbabwe">Econet Wireless Zimbabwe,</a> a telecommunications company founded by <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Strive_Masiyiwa">Strive Masiyiwa</a>, says the shortage of foreign currency on the market has negatively affected its operations.
In its third quarter (Q3) to November 2022 trading update, Econet said the situation is being worsened by persistent power cuts that have prompted the company to use more foreign currency to invest in alternative energy sources such as solar.
The group said it continues to negotiate payment terms with its network equipment vendors that take into account local business challenges. Read the part of the report:

Despite these challenges, Econet’s revenue for the 9 months period grew by 9 per cent in inflation-adjusted terms compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year.

Dangote Group, executive director Edwin Devakumar, announced the move on behalf of the billionaire businessman and said the scholarship program benefited 443 secondary schools and 17 tertiary institutions.

Dangote Group, which ranks as the continent’s most diversified manufacturing conglomerate, is a leading conglomerate with interests in various sectors such as cement, sugar, flour, and salt. It is majority owned by Dangote.
In 2019, the group launched a pilot scholarship program, awarding 51 secondary school students from Ibeju Lekki’s 15 host communities. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the program’s second edition did not take place in 2020.

Zimbabwean-born telecommunications magnate Strive Masiyiwa has dismissed reports claiming that he is set to buy South African premiership club, SuperSport United.
On Tuesday, a South African publication claimed Masiyiwa was on the verge of buying the club, with the deal reported to be “almost complete”.
However, in a Facebook post, Masiyiwa refuted the report saying “I don’t go around trying to buy sports teams.” Said Masiyiwa:

Strives Masiyiwa Finally Breaks Silence On SuperSport United Takeover Rumours

DStv premiership club SuperSport United Football Club has dismissed reports claiming that Zimbabwean billionaire Strive Masiyiwa is set to buy the club.
A report emerged on Tuesday alleging that a deal for Masiyiwa to take over Matsatsantsa was “almost complete”.
However, SuperSport United refuted the report in a message that was sent to the players and staff. The club said:

Supersport United Dismisses "Imminent" Strive Masiyiwa Takeover Report

Strive Masiyiwa is now ranked number 89 on the United Kingdom (UK)’s rich list, up from 159 last year.
Masiyiwa’s fortune has grown to £2 billion (US$2.5 billion), growing by £913 million (US$1.14 billion) over the past 12 months, according to the Sunday Times Rich List for 2022.
The Zimbabwean-born Econet group founder is reported to be Britain’s only black billionaire.
In an interview with the Sunday Times, Masiyiwa revealed that he was 12 when he first came to the UK.
He said his parents had managed to get the money to send him to Holt School, a boys’ boarding school in Edinburgh. Masiyiwa said:

I was crying. It was bitterly cold. They said, ‘You have to wear your kilt on Sunday.’
I looked at them and their bare legs, and thought, ‘This is it. I’m dead.’

ECONET founder Strive Masiyiwa has been summoned to appear before Parliament to give oral evidence on an issue where his company is accused of failing to pay Masvingo Municipality for leased land.
The land houses the company’s base stations.
A register of lease agreements shows that Econet has 16 base stations in Masvingo, despite that some of its lease agreements with the municipality expired years ago.
Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) member Dexter Nduna (Chegutu West MP) Tuesday confirmed that Masiyiwa had been summoned to appear before Parliament. Nduna told NewsDay:

Parliament is a big institution and this is the reason why the committee seeks the input of the proprietor, not messengers (Econet bosses) with a view that he explains the anomaly where his company is not paying for that leased land. The AG exposed this and the committee has gone further to try and find out what has been happening and how this is happening.
We are seeing revenue leakages in the form of underhand dealings. We are seeing proliferation of Econet base stations and we shudder to think if this (not paying council) is also not happening in other towns

Nduna said Parliament seeks to understand what transpired and also to recover the money.
The anomaly with regards to the lease agreements was unearthed by Auditor-General (AG) Mildred Chiri’s 2019 report on local authorities.
Section 299 of the Constitution confers PAC with unlimited oversight powers over State and council’s financial activities.
Of Econet’s 16 lease agreements in Masvingo, one of them for Lot 75 Rujeko B base station measuring 180 square metres has expired while some agreements including Lot 7 Don Bosco Primary School and Lot 8 Flamboyant Hotel base stations signed in January 2014 have no expiry dates.
Lot 5 lease agreement was signed on August 1, 2017, and expires on July 31, 2022.

United Kingdom-based Zimbabwean born businessman and philanthropist Strive Masiyiwa has described Zambia’s transition as “African class”, saying he will be watching new President Hakainde Hichilema’s policies to decide on possible new investment in the country.
Masiyiwa owns Liquid Intelligent Technologies, Africa’s largest fibre company, which has operations in Zambia and across the continent.
Writing about Zambia’ electoral processes and outcome on Monday, Masiyiwa also commended outgoing Zambian leader Edgar Lungu for conceding defeat. Wrote Masiyiwa:

Econet founder, Strive Masiyiwa has corrected reports claiming he attained British Citizenship while stating that he is Zimbabwean.
Responding to one of his Facebook followers who had congratulated him for being named first British black billionaire, the various awards he has won and his humanitarian work in Africa, Masiyiwa wrote:
<blockquote>Thank you, Joseph. Just one correction; I’m not British, I’m Zimbabwean. The article simply said the first black billionaire to live in Britain.
There are many billionaires on the list who are residents of the UK, but not British citizens.
To suggest that I’m British simply because on the list of a UK newspaper is the same as I’m an American since I have long appeared on the list of Forbes Magazine.</blockquote>
Masiyiwa’s wealth is estimated to be £1.087 billion, which elevated him into the ranks of Britain’s super-rich.
The 60-year-old businessman, who also chairs Liquid Intelligent Technologies, a pan-African fibre-optic operator, a subsidiary of Econet, was in January also named among Africa’s richest businesspeople.

Strive Masiyiwa Corrects British Citizenship Reports

Zimbabwean-born businessman and philanthropist Strive Masiyiwa has said his first board appointment was at the now-defunct State-owned Zimbabwe Iron and Steel Company (ZISCO), also known as Ziscosteel.
Writing on his Facebook page, Masiyiwa exposes how political patronage and sheer incompetence led to the demise of a company which was once Zimbabwe’s highest foreign currency earner. He wrote:
<blockquote>My first board appointment was a company called the Zimbabwe Iron and Steel Company [ZISCO].
It had once been the single largest source of foreign exchange earnings to the country. I was only 31 years old.
When the Minister asked me to serve on the board, I asked him if I could have some information on the company:
“Don’t you know ZISCO?” He asked surprised.
“No sir. I have never seen their accounts.”
The Minister hesitated a while and then said:
“Okay, I will have them send you the information, but this appointment has been cleared with the President so don’t embarrass me by refusing.”
It took them almost two weeks of chasing to get any accounts, and what I received was not audited.
A few weeks later, after the appointment, I attended my first board meeting: They had no current financial information on the company, and no one on the board seemed all that interested.
I continued to dig around on their accounts. So I asked to see the Minister on my own and off the record:
“This company is in big trouble. It is going to collapse.”
He was stunned by my candour and listened quietly as I explained.
“Can it be fixed?”
“Yes, but it would be tough.”
He was a good guy and understood what I was saying. It was also clear that he could not muster the political will to make the changes, including firing the entire board and management.
The chairman was more powerful than the Minister, and he knew nothing about business, but no one had ever told him!
The so-called “Managing Director” was a politician, even though he had never held a political office. He knew who to please in the system, and was virtually untouchable.
Finally, I asked him how long I must serve before it would be ok to step down. I was crying as I drove home. I knew it would die.
I don’t know what became of that company because I have not been to Zimbabwe for over 20 years.
The lesson I want you to take away is this:
You do not know anything about any business until you see it’s financial statements.
Even a business that has been operating for just 3 months can have financials.
Even a tiny business can have financial statements done.
You can learn to do it for yourself in a very basic way.</blockquote>

Masiyiwa Reveals How Patronage & Sheer Incompetence Destroyed Ziscosteel

The founder of Econet Wireless, Dr Strive Masiyiwa has announced that he, together with his global partners, has donated 1000 ventilators to a number of African states.
Masiyiwa announced the arrival of 45 full ICU ventilators in Zimbabwe which the businessman ordered a couple of months back.
The billionaire entrepreneur and philanthropist, who is the African Union’s Special Envoy to Coordinate the Africa Private Sector Initiative for the Procurement of Personal Protective Equipment and other Essential Supplies, also announced that he has teamed up with fellow global entrepreneurs Sir Richard Branson and Jeff Skoll to donate 1 000 more ventilators to 8 African countries.
Breaking the news on his popular Facebook blog, Masiyiwa wrote:

Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA) which represents middle-level and junior doctors has announced that it has accepted the ZWL$100 million offer that was tabled in November by Econet Wireless founder, Dr Strive Masiyiwa.
Masiyiwa also offered a Training Fellowship for Junior and Senior Resident Medical Officers employed at Public Healthcare institutions of Zimbabwe.
In a statement, ZHDA said:
<blockquote>In light of the recent development, the ZHDA wants to  extend its gratitude to the Higherlife Foundation for extending its offer once again to all government doctors. The ZHDA is encouraging its entire membership to go and apply for the training fellowship before the stipulated deadline.</blockquote>
The development comes when the health sector in the country is on its knees as health caregivers at public institutions are on industrial action which started in September last year.
Doctors initially rejected the offer calling upon the government to provide a sustainable solution to revive the health sector that has been in a parlous state for decades now.
Masiyiwa’s deal will see doctors pocketing ZW$5000 every month, a smartphone, a VAYA taxi ride from home, uniforms and diagnostic aids.

Zimbabwe Junior Doctors Finally Accept Strive Masiyiwa's $100M Offer

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has on the 30th of September banned all cash-ins, cash-outs and cash-backs by mobile money agents.
The central bank argues that the agents were promoting and or participating in money laundering which has undermined the economy of the country.
Newz Wire, a local publication has however observed that shutting out Ecocash, a subsidiary of Strive Masiyiwa’s Econet Wireless, was not sustainable.
The publication added that the move was equal to addressing a symptom instead of the underlying issues.
Newz Wire observes that when Ecocash was launched in 2011, it was adopted to help lessen the effects of the cash shortage crisis. The publication cites Ecocash as having said:
<blockquote>With critical shortage of US dollar notes, the Econet system will completely eliminate the need for any notes for purchases below US$20.</blockquote>
The publication observes that the RBZ is yet to find a lasting solution to the cash shortages crisis.
It also admits that Ecocash Agents were taking advantage of the crisis and they were not going to do so if the situation was normal.
To further support their point, Newz Wire Live cites RBZ governor’s speech in which he indicated that the cash crisis was giving agents room to engage in illegal transactions in foreign currency and to selling cash at a premium.

Telecoms tycoon Strive Masiyiwa has called on businesses to price their good in rands as this may ease the serious price instability in the country so far.
Zimlive wrote:

“A loaf of bread in South Africa costs R9.50. It costs R30 in Zimbabwe. 3x!!! Eighty percent of imported goods in Zimbabwe come from South Africa. It’s not uncommon to find those same goods costing anything above three times the cost.
“The people who pay for a lot of goods are Zimbabweans living in South Africa, through their remittances. The cost structure – labour and goods – in Zimbabwe is distorted by the arbitrage of the United States dollar as a currency of settlement for rand imports.”
Masiyiwa said if every business in Zimbabwe quoted their customers for goods and services in the SA rand, “it would go some way to eliminating the dollar arbitrage.”

Econet founder Strive Masiyiwa and his wife Tsitsi have announced a US$100 million revolving fund for the support of rural businesses in Zimbabwe.
Masiyiwa said he has appealed to his friends to avail more funds so that the project can be expanded across Africa. Said Masiyiwa:
<blockquote>My wife and I have decided to set up a special fund of $100m over 5 years for ReImagine Rural in Zimbabwe. We have also challenged our friends in the philanthropy community to join us to expand it across Africa. Strive Masiyiwa And Wife Tsitsi Avail US$100 million To Support Rural Businesses

Business Mogul Strive Masiyiwa has hit back at former Cabinet Minister Jonathan Moyo as their cyber war continues unabated. His wife, Tsitsi Masiyiwa reportedly closed her Twitter account as a result of cyber-bullying. In an apparent reference to Jonathan Moyo, Masiyiwa had this to say:
<blockquote>One former Minister [now a champion of democracy] was involved in the shutting down of my newspaper, which was subsequently bombed. Same guy attacking me now!</blockquote>
Masiyiwa is the founder and former owner of the Daily News. The paper was very critical of the Mugabe administration at the turn of the millennium. It was bombed at night and the perpetrators of the crime were never brought to book.
Jonathan Moyo was the Minister in charge of Media and Broadcasting at the time. It was during this time that the Access to Information and Protection of Private Act was enacted. The law has since been used to curtail press freedoms.
