Approximately 22 students from David Livingstone Primary School <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2024/01/19/22-pupils-from-david-livingstone-primary-school-kidnapped/">who were reported kidnapped</a> have been found. It turns out that the driver of the school van, Samuel Honde (60), drove along the Harare-Mutare Road until the van ran out of fuel. The van was found in Macheke, which is about 91 km from Harare. An official from the school narrated:

On Thursday, January 18, 2024, around 1 pm, he picked up the kids, left the school and drove along Harare-Mutare Road. We’re not sure what happened, but he might have had a mental problem or something else. He kept driving until the van ran out of fuel. In the afternoon, when the students didn’t come home, we started searching for Sekuru Honde and the van. We couldn’t reach him on his phone, and sometimes the students answered, saying, “Sekuru is driving.” When the fuel ran out, he parked the van on the side of the road, and the hungry kids started crying. Around 6:30 – 7 pm, a person passing by found Sekuru Honde’s phone and was the one who informed us that the van was in Macheke. The passerby notified the police, who took the van to Macheke Police Station. That’s when we went to Macheke to bring back the kids.]

The pupils were subsequently taken to Marondera Hospital for a thorough medical examination to address any physical or emotional harm they may have experienced. A police report of the incident read:

Honde was contracted by parents to ferry learners to and from David Livingstone Primary School from their respective residencies around Harare since 2016.
Police interrogated the driver on where he was heading and he stated that he was going to Kuwadzana Extension in Harare. He was arrested for kidnapping and escorted to Macheke Police Station.
Next of kins of the children were advised and the pupils were ferried to Marondera Provincial Hospital for medical examination.

When the responding officers arrived, they discovered 25 children inside the van. There were 14 girls and 11 boys, all between the ages of 4 and 8. The driver of the van, Samuel Honde, who is 60 years old and resides at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Kuwadzana Extension, will soon be appearing in court.

UPDATE: David Livingstone Primary Kids Found

The Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church is using sports to fight drug and substance abuse among youths in Matabeleland South Province.
The SDA church, working with its partners, hosted a sports gala in Bulilima District to educate young people on the effects of the scourge.
On Sunday, the church held various sporting activities such as football, volleyball, basketball and netball.
Youths who spoke to <a href="https://zbcnews.co.zw/2023/06/13/church-uses-sport-to-fight-drug-and-substance-abuse/">ZBC News</a> welcomed the initiative saying young people now have something to keep them occupied. Said a youth:

We appreciate this initiative to fight drug and substance abuse through sport because it makes youth have something to do in the rural area.
The fact that this initiative is not a once of thing but a program is an ongoing initiative and will help us as youths in the area to concentrate on the activities especially those that love sports.

Brian Moyo of the Adventist Church said drug and substance abuse is no longer affecting urban societies only but has cascaded to rural areas as well. Moyo said:

This is a good initiative but it is high time to take awareness campaigns to places that have been marginalised for a long period such as rural areas.
Although drug and substance abuse seems to be prevalent in urban areas, the effects are also being felt in rural areas.
There is a need to talk about how Omalayitsha are bringing drugstore from Botswana and South Africa supplying youths.
We are going to capacitate the youths around the area of Solusi so that we tackle this issue and avoid relapses.

SDA Church Uses Sport To Fight Drug And Substance Abuse

The Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church held a child-dedicated service in Emganwini, Bulawayo on Saturday to fight drug abuse.
Emganwini Seventh-day Adventist church district pastor Obadiah Ngwenya told <a href="https://newsday.co.zw/southerneye/local-news/article/200010023/sda-joins-drug-abuse-fight">Southern Eye</a> that the service was held under the theme: “There is Peace in the Midst of a Storm”.
He said that 77 children participated and dedicated themselves to God. Said Ngwenya:

Among them were 25 non-Adventists, who were accompanied by their family members.
Child dedication is a service that acknowledges that God is the only one who knows how to safeguard children.
God protects and guides the children and baptises them with the Holy Spirit.
The whole assurance of protection comes from God so that children are protected from all the social ills of this world.

Ward 26 councillor Mpumelelo Moyo commended the church for participating in the fight against drug abuse. Moyo said:
It is important for the church to take a leading role in the fight against drug and substance abuse, and to groom young people to become responsible citizens.
According to <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/add.15729">the Society for the Study of Addiction (SSA)</a>, Zimbabwe’s illicit substance use problem increased dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Commonly used substances in Zimbabwe include glue, bronclee, mangemba, cane sprit, marijuana, codeine and methamphetamine (crystal meth).
Very high unemployment rates in Zimbabwe, coupled with poverty and despair, have resulted in increasing numbers of youthful citizens also turning to use drugs as a way of entertainment.
According to the Ministry of Health and Child Care, people who have problems with drug abuse can be assisted at the following public as well as private health centres:

SDA Church Joins Fight Against Drug And Substance Abuse

A 43-year-old Zimbabwean woman who was the treasurer of the Pretoria City Seventh-day Adventist church has been jailed for an effective three years for stealing R800 000 in tithe money in South Africa.
Memory Mutsika was convicted by the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court for 128 counts of theft which occurred over a four-year period.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Mutsika’s responsibilities included transferring tithe and offering money deposited to the church account, to the Northern Conference of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
NPA spokesperson for Pretoria, Lumka Mahanjana, said that between 2012 and 2015, Mutsika transferred more than R800 000 of the money received from the tithe and offerings to her bank account.
Mahanjana said Mutsika converted the money to her personal use and pleaded guilty to the charges.
She said Mutsika had asked for a non-custodial sentence to enable her to repay the church the money over five years. Added Mahanjana:

However, the State argued that Mutsika always indicated her willingness to pay back the money and had not paid back a single cent since March 2022 after her conviction.
The magistrate agreed with the State and said Mutsika showed no remorse, and that she only stopped stealing not because of her conscience, but because she was caught.
The church placed her in a position of trust, but she betrayed that trust. He further said that he viewed Mutsika’s willingness to pay back the money, as a bargaining tool and as a ticket to keep her out of prison.
Therefore, a sentence of imprisonment was appropriate and criminal conduct has consequences.

Seventh-day Adventist Zim Woman Jailed In SA For Stealing Tithe Money

Members of the Seventh Day Adventist Church (SDA) have approached the High Court in a bid to influence the University of Zimbabwe to move examinations it scheduled for Saturdays to alternative dates and time previously proposed saying new dates prejudiced its members.
The university which reopened its learning facilities to final year students on June 29 released an examination timetable through the e-learning portal on July 1, and some of the exams are going to be held on July 11 and 18 which will be Saturdays.
In the challenge filed through their representatives, Maranatha Chigogora and Natasha Nyathi cited the University of Zimbabwe (UZ), the registrar of the University of Zimbabwe, Higher and Tertiary education minister Amon Murwira as respondents. The court papers read in part:
<blockquote>The applicants being members of the Seventh-Day Adventist church cannot avail themselves for the said examinations on the above-mentioned dates as this conflicts with their professed faith, in particular, their belief that the biblical seventh-day Sabbath starts from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday.
Applicants have fundamental constitutional rights to freedom of conscience, right to education and right not to be unfairly discriminated against.</blockquote>
The students told the court that they had attempted to engage university authorities concerning the rescheduling of the examinations but all efforts were in vain.

SDA Members Learning At UZ Want Saturday Exams Moved As "Dates Conflict With Their Professed Faith,"

Seventh Davy Adventist high school on my run in Solusi is facing legal action from parents after the boarding master Methuseli Ncube assaulted five form one students resultingin five being hospitalised.
The school administration is also accused of protecting Ncube. A source told The Chronicle that form 6 pupils recorded Ncube beating one of the students. Contacted for comment by The Chronicle, the School Development Committee chairperson said that he was unaware of the developmemnt as he was away.
