Police in Guruve, Mashonaland Central Province, are currently investigating a murder incident that took place on October 24, 2024, at a local gold mine.
The incident involves a security guard, identified as Simon Chiunye, aged 36, who is accused of fatally shooting a man named Masango Titus, aged 33, using a Huglo shotgun.
In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said Masango was part of a group of illegal gold panners who had invaded the mine, which has been a growing issue in the region.
According to initial reports, the situation escalated when Masango and other gold panners attacked Chiunye, prompting him to use his firearm in self-defence. The confrontation resulted in Masango being shot in the head, leading to his death.
Following the incident, Chiunye sustained injuries during the altercation and was subsequently admitted to a hospital in Harare for treatment. Police said:

A security guard named Simon Chiunye is being investigated for shooting and killing a man named Masango Titus at a gold mine. Titus was part of a group of illegal gold miners who invaded the mine. Security Guard Faces A Murder Charge For Killing Intruder At A Gold Mine

A 49-year-old security guard from Hwange is accused of sodomising a boy and two other men on separate occasions after offering them temporary accommodation at his workplace.
The suspect has been charged with four counts of aggravated indecent assault. To protect the victims’ identities, the accused’s name has not been disclosed.
He appeared before a magistrate in Hwange and has been remanded in custody until October 25.
One of the victims, a 17-year-old who accepted the accused’s offer for shelter, recounted a traumatic experience of being subjected to non-consensual anal intercourse while asleep in the guard’s bedroom.
In a statement, the National Prosecution Authority (NPA) indicated that the accused provided the victim with accommodation at his home, only to commit a grievous act the following night.
Despite efforts to protect himself by wearing tight-fitting clothing, the accused allegedly struck again, leaving the victim traumatised and fearful for his safety.
Sadly, this pattern of abuse continued, as two more male colleagues, aged 19 and 18, became victims of the accused’s depraved actions on separate occasions in August 2024. Said the NPA:

A 49-year-old man from Hwange who is employed as a security guard was arraigned before the Hwange Magistrates’ Court facing four counts of aggravated indecent assault.
On the 10th of August 2024, the accused person offered accommodation to the complainant (17) who had secured a job at his place of work. The accused person offered him accommodation at his house. 
Allegations are that, on the following night, the accused person and the complainant were asleep in the accused person’s bedroom, when the accused person had anal sexual intercourse with the complainant, without his consent.
The complainant confided in his friend and workmate who advised him to sleep wearing tight-fitting clothes to deter the accused person.
The accused person however had sexual intercourse with the complainant once more on the night of the 13th of August.
It is further alleged that the accused person also indecently assaulted two more male colleagues (19 and 18) using the same modus on the 15th of August and on the 25th of August, respectively.

The accused remains in custody while awaiting further legal proceedings, with a remand date set for October 25.

A security guard in Hwange has been accused of sexually assaulting three men, including one boy. The guard offered them accommodation at his workplace and then committed the assault. He has been charged with four counts of indecent assault. One victim, a 17-year-old boy, experienced non-consensual anal intercourse while staying at the guard's house. Two other victims, aged 19 and 18, also fell victim to the guard's actions. The guard remains in custody and will appear in court on October 25. The victims' identities are protected.

Security Guard Sodomises Three Men At His Workplace

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched a manhunt for a security guard who robbed the bank he was assigned to guard in Sanyati on Friday.
According to the police, the suspect, identified as Samson Mahohoma (46), attacked two bank tellers and three other bank officials on Friday afternoon, making off with US$134,000 and ZAR 32,800 in cash. The ZRP stated:

The ZRP is appealing for information that may lead to the arrest of Samson Mahohoma (46), who is wanted in connection with a robbery that occurred at a bank in Sanyati on 14/09/24 at approximately 1:30 PM. The suspect, while on duty, assaulted two bank tellers and three other officials before stealing US$134,000 and ZAR 32,800 in cash. Anyone with information is urged to report to the nearest police station.

In a separate case, the ZRP is also seeking information that may lead to the arrest of Michael Tinotenda Tichaona Mungure, who is wanted in connection with a fraud case involving RTGS$3,754,535.82.
The ZRP said that Mungure, a former loans officer at a local bank, is alleged to have withdrawn the cash after two clients submitted loan applications for agricultural purposes.

On Duty Security Guard Robs Bank Of US$134 000, ZAR33 000

Ezekiel Chiradza, a 35-year-old security guard from Beitbridge, was arrested earlier this week and charged with insulting President Emmerson Mnangagwa. He has since been granted bail.
Chiradza allegedly recorded a video in which he sings, “Mnangagwa has destroyed the country,” while expressing support for former CCC leader Nelson Chamisa. This video was shared in a WhatsApp group.
On Thursday, September 5, Chiradza was granted bail of US$100 by Beitbridge Magistrate Takudzwa Gwazemba, according to the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR).
The magistrate imposed conditions, including a prohibition against interfering with state witnesses and investigations, and required Chiradza to continue residing at his registered address until the conclusion of his case.
Chiradza was represented by Patrick Tererai from the ZLHR. He faces charges under section 33(2)(a)(ii) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, which pertains to undermining the authority of or insulting the President.

Security Guard Granted US$100 Bail After Singing Against Mnangagwa

A security guard based in Beitbridge has been arrested and charged with insulting President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
He allegedly criticised the President for mismanaging the economy and introducing the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency.
According to the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), Ezekiel Chiradza, 35, was taken into custody on September 2.
Chiradza reportedly recorded a video in which he condemned Mnangagwa and voiced support for former CCC leader Nelson Chamisa, sharing it in a WhatsApp group. The ZLHR said:

There is no respite in targeting citizens for perceived dissent and in Beitbridge, a 35-year-old security guard has been arrested and charged for allegedly insulting President Mnangagwa, whom he accused of economic mismanagement and also for disapproving use of ZiG currency.
Ezekiel Chiradza, who works as a security guard at Beitbridge Town Council, was arrested by ZRP officers on 2 September and was charged with undermining the authority of or insulting the President as defined in section 33(2)(a)(ii) of Criminal Law (Codification and Reform Act.
Chiradza reportedly recorded a video and published it on a WhatsApp group called Zim Politics, while singing and uttering some words condemning President Mnangagwa and praising Nelson Chamisa, his rival in last year’s general elections.

Security Guard's Video Critique Of Mnangagwa Results In Arrest For "Insulting The President"

In an unusual case of workplace dispute, a former security guard has been charged for violating wildlife regulations after using unconventional means to demand unpaid wages from her previous employer.
Sithembiso Budzirikawa, aged 58, was arraigned before the Harare Magistrates’ Court for removing a live tortoise from its natural habitat and transporting it to the office of her former workplace, Cliff Security.
According to the prosecution, Budzirikawa was employed by Cliff Security from April to August 2023. When she was owed an undisclosed amount of money upon her departure from the company, she decided to take matters into her own hands.
On August 21, 2024, Budzirikawa arrived at the Cliff Security office, carrying a white bucket.
Inside the bucket was a live tortoise, which she had removed from the Chabwino farm in Goromonzi without a permit, in violation of the Parks and Wildlife Act.
She had painted the tortoise with red floor polish and tied it with a red cloth containing pinned needles.
Budzirikawa demanded that the company pay her the money she was owed. When the company, represented by human resources manager Cassius Nyemudzwa, failed to comply, she released the tortoise onto the office floor, threatening that the animal would use its “supernatural powers” to retrieve the money.
Nyemudzwa reported the incident to the police, and upon Budzirikawa’s arrest, she was unable to produce a license or permit allowing her to transport the tortoise.
In her defence, Budzirikawa told the presiding magistrate, Ruth Moyo, that she was driven to such measures out of desperation to provide for her children, as she had not received the money owed to her by the company.
Magistrate Moyo ordered Budzirikawa to pay a fine of US$300 by September 30, 2024, or face three months’ imprisonment for the wildlife violation.

A lady took a tortoise from the wild to scare her old boss for not paying her. She painted the tortoise red and threatened with its "powers" if she wasn't paid. She was taken to court and given a fine of $300.

Security Guard Scares Ex-Employer With Painted Tortoise

Residents of Pumula suburb in Bulawayo have reportedly found what is believed to be the murder weapon used to kill Khangelani Nkiwane on Sunday.
The victim was allegedly killed by her live-in boyfriend, Oscar Khumalo.
According to <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/residents-find-gun-used-in-pumula-murder/">The Chronicle</a>, the suspected murder weapon – a gun – was discovered in a bushy area by a resident, who then immediately notified the police.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson for Bulawayo Province, Inspector Abednico Ncube, has issued an appeal to members of the public.
He requested that anyone with information about the whereabouts of Oscar Khumalo should come forward and assist the ongoing police investigation. Said Insp. Ncube:

We are still looking for Khumalo and are appealing to members of the public to come forward should they have information about his whereabouts.
We would like to urge all men in Bulawayo to not resort to violence when solving disputes but rather to look for a third person to intervene.

Khumalo, who works as a security guard, <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/security-guard-shoots-kills-wife/">allegedly shot Nkiwane three times around 5 PM on Sunday</a> at the rented house they shared.
Khumalo is said to have used his work-issued pistol during the incident before fleeing the scene.
Nkiwane was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital but tragically succumbed to the injuries she sustained from the shooting.
Further details indicate that during the dispute, Nkiwane had initially managed to escape from Khumalo and locked herself in the landlord’s room.
However, Khumalo then allegedly moved to the window and shot her three times – once in the hand and twice in the back.
The landlady, Hoitsi Nkomo, provided a harrowing account, describing how the enraged Khumalo chased after a naked Nkiwane, intent on attacking her. She said:
<blockquote>
I saw her running towards my room and initially, I thought she was running away from my vicious dogs.
But I then realised that she wasn’t running away from the dogs but Khumalo, who was brandishing a pistol while threatening to kill her.
She forced herself into my bedroom, half naked and my grandchildren were also in the room.
My grandchildren assisted in shutting out Khumalo and when we thought everything was now calm, he moved outside the house and went to my bedroom window where he opened fire, shooting her three times.
</blockquote>
Nkomo said that as Khumalo made his escape from the scene, the neighbours promptly called the police.
An ambulance also arrived and rushed the critically injured Nkiwane to Mpilo Central Hospital.
Nkomo further stated that although Nkiwane was bleeding extensively, she was still in stable condition and able to communicate by the time she was transported to the hospital.
The spokesperson for the Nkiwane family, Albert Mhlanga, revealed that Khumalo had a history of abusive and violent behaviour towards the victim.
Mhlanga claimed that Khumalo had threatened to kill Nkiwane on several occasions before this tragic incident. He said:
<blockquote>
Khumalo had been threatening to steal a gun and shoot our daughter for the past two weeks. He was a very jealous man and had even banned our daughter from attending church.
In fact, on the day of the dispute, I had talked to him about the issue and he promised that he wouldn’t be abusive anymore.
It was our wish as a family that our daughter left him, but she loved him, so we decided to let them be. I wish she had not ignored our advice.

A security guard named Oscar Khumalo shot his live-in girlfriend Khangelani Nkiwane three times with a gun in Bulawayo. The police are looking for Khumalo who fled the scene after the shooting. Nkiwane was taken to the hospital but sadly died from her injuries. The family knew Khumalo was abusive and had threatened Nkiwane before. They wished she had left him earlier. People are being urged not to use violence to solve problems, but to seek help from others. The community found the gun used in the murder and reported it to the police.

Security Guard Shoots Live-in Girlfriend 3 Times

Two security guards were killed in cold blood in separate incidents on 29 and 30 January 2024, respectively.
In one of the incidents, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said that a security guard on duty at an Econet booster in Mucheke, Masvingo, was violently assaulted by an unknown suspect and left for dead on 29 January.
The security guard was later found lying unconscious in a pool of blood before he was taken to Masvingo Provincial Hospital where he later died. Police said:

Police in Masvingo are investigating circumstances surrounding a case of murder in which Hanisi Hamandishe(34) died on 30/01/24. The victim who was a security guard on duty at an Econet booster in Mucheke, Masvingo was allegedly assaulted by an unknown suspect with an unknown sharp object indiscriminately on 29/01/24. The victim was later found lying unconscious in a pool of blood before he was taken to Masvingo Provincial Hospital where he succumbed to the injuries on admission. Anyone with information to report at any nearest Police Station.

In the other incident, the ZRP said Obert Baradzi (38) was shot dead by six unknown assailants while guarding a mine in Mandindindi, Lalapanzi on 30 January. Police said:

Police in Lalapanzi are investigating a case of murder and robbery which occurred on 29/01/24 in the Mandindindi area in which Obert Baradzi (38) died. Six unknown male suspects shot the victim who was a security guard at a mine with an unknown type of firearm before stealing a 303 rifle, 2,5tonnes of gold ore, a jackhammer, a 1.5 horsepower submersible pump, ltel P3 cellphone and ltel P38 cellphone all valued at US$2 640.00.

Two Security Guards Murdered

A security guard in Mutoko lost his service pistol to a prostitute after failing to pay for her “services”, reported <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200022006/guard-loses-pistol-to-sex-worker">NewsDay</a>.
The security guard, Evidence Mangonono (27), had hired the woman only identified as Choice and had sex with her near a bank where he was guarding.
It is alleged that Choice took the pistol after Mangonono had failed to pay for her services.
Mangonono appeared at the Mutoko Magistrates Courts before magistrate Chiedza Gatsi charged with violating the Firearms Act.
Gatsi initially sentenced Mangonono to a year in prison before suspending the custodial sentence on the condition that he perform 325 hours of community service at Hurungwe Primary School in Murewa.
It was the State’s case that on 07 January 2024, Mangonono drank sex-enhancing herbs with his colleagues and hired the “sex worker”.
He had sexual intercourse with the woman at the back of the bank he was guarding.
Mangonono, however, failed to pay for the service, prompting the woman to take his service pistol as collateral.
The next day his company discovered that his service gun was missing and filed a police report.
Mangonono scrounged for money and later made a follow-up and paid Choice to recover the gun.
The Firearms Act is a law regulating and controlling the possession, sale, repair and manufacture of firearms and ammunition. It aims to ensure public safety and prevent the misuse of firearms.

Security Guard Surrenders Service Pistol To Sex Worker As Collateral

The 30-year-old female security guard who died following an attack by an elephant while at work in Hwange on Friday was not equipped to safely discharge her duties, it has emerged.
The now-deceased Lydia Dube was deployed alone at night without a firearm or a radio communication system.
This was said by Farai Maguwu, the founding Director of the Centre for Natural Resource Governance (CNRG). <a href="https://x.com/FMaguwu/status/1728842793240736138?s=20">He posted on X Sunday</a>:

Lydia Dube (30), was tragically killed by an elephant whilst guarding a broken down crane at Chaba mine in Hwange yesterday.
She was deployed alone at night without a firearm. She also did not have a radio communication system. Perhaps they wanted her to defend the machine with her body.
She is survived by her daughter. Human-wildlife conflict is now rife in Hwange due to various factors which may include climate change and mining near national parks.

According to a report by <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/female-security-guard-dies-after-elephant-attack/">The Sunday News</a>, Lydia Dube was pronounced dead on arrival at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo on Saturday after being transferred from Hwange Colliery Hospital.
The killer elephant has since been put down by Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management (Zimparks) rangers.
A source was quoted as saying Dube who was employed as a security guard was on duty where she was guarding a broken-down crane at Chaba Mine. Said the source:

She saw an elephant a distance away and disembarked from the machine she was guarding to go to the guard room.
Unbeknown to her, there was an elephant lurking behind her that attacked her before she got to the guard room leaving her for dead.
She was discovered still alive but seriously injured.

Dube was reportedly rushed to Hwange Colliery Hospital where her condition deteriorated before being transferred to Mpilo where she succumbed to the injuries on arrival.

Female Security Guard Killed By Elephant In Hwange Was Alone At Night, And Had No Firearm Or Radio - Maguwu

A security guard was found dead with a cut on his head at a business premises in Harare.
Police said that Chamunorwa Charuma (40) was found dead on 24 July 2023 in Msasa, Harare.
Posting on Twitter, police said the incident is still under investigation. Police said:

Police in Harare are investigating circumstances surrounding a case of murder in which a security guard, Chamunorwa Charuma (40) was found dead with a cut on the head at a business premise in Masasa on 24/07/23. Anyone with information to report at any nearest Police Station.

Security guards can ensure their safety at work by remaining alert and attentive to their surroundings.
Guards should also use protective equipment such as helmets, vests, gloves, or safety shoes.
The safety of security guards can further be enhanced by adhering to established protocols and procedures to maintain clear and open lines of communication with supervisors, colleagues, and other stakeholders.
Above all, guards should avoid complacency and avoid becoming too relaxed in their role.

Security Guard Found Dead, With Deep Cut On The Head

Three officials from the Private Security Workers Union (PSWU) who were arrested in Bulawayo have been granted ZWL$50 000 each after the intervention of human rights lawyers.
According to the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), Last Danga Muzondo, Dzimudzi Feremba and Kholwani Tshuma were arrested for staging a protest at an OK Zimbabwe retail outlet and at N Richards outlet.
The trio was allegedly protesting against “slavery” and is accused of chanting songs and waving placards written, “No to Slavery”. ZLHR said:

In Bulawayo, we rescued 3 trade unionists, who are employed as security guards, who had been arrested and detained for allegedly protesting against “slavery” at an OK Zimbabwe retail outlet and at N Richards retail outlet.
The trio of Last Danga Muzondo, Dzimudzi Feremba and Kholwani Tshuma, who are leaders of the Private Security Workers Union, were charged with participating in a gathering with intent to promote public violence, breach of peace/bigotry as defined in section 37 of Criminal Code.
They were accused of chanting songs and waving placards written “No to Slavery” “USD”.
Their detention ended on Monday when our lawyer Jabulani Mhlanga represented them and got them released on ZWL$50 000 bail each.

Section 37 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act of Zimbabwe states that “Any person who participates in a gathering with intent to promote public violence, breaches of the peace or bigotry shall be guilty of an offence and liable to a fine not exceeding level six or to imprisonment for a period not exceeding one year or to both such fine and such imprisonment.”

A 56-year-old security guard allegedly shot himself with his service rifle in Checheche after discovering that his wife was having extra-marital affairs.
Johane Chiweshe from Dambamuromo Village in Chipinge South committed suicide recently after making several suicide attempts before.
ZRP spokesperson in Manicaland Province, Inspector Nobert Muzondo, confirmed the incident which happened in Checheche on 07 March 2023. He said:

The now-late Johane Chiweshe who was employed as a security guard was on duty when the incident happened. He was armed with a 303 riffle.
His workmate, Munyaradzi Gorivoto heard a gunshot around midnight and called out Chiweshe who did not respond. He alerted their superior, Enock Musasike, and he rushed to the scene.
The two searched around the company premises and discovered that Chiweshe was already dead. His body was found lying facing upwards with blood oozing from his head.
A report was made to the police who attended the scene and observed a gunshot wound on Chiweshe’s head.
The 303 riffle was also discovered near Chiweshe’s hand with a magazine containing seven rounds.
An empty cartridge was also discovered at the scene and the body was conveyed to St Peter’s Mission Hospital mortuary.
Inquiries done indicate that Chiweshe had attempted suicide many times before.

Chiweshe’s neighbour who spoke to <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/guard-shoots-self-over-wifes-infidelity/">The Manica Post</a> claimed that the now-deceased had accused his wife of infidelity several times. Said the neighbour:

Chiweshe accused his wife of infidelity several times. Their relationship was an on-and-off affair. His church members would intervene whenever the couple had a misunderstanding and they would reconcile.
However, Chiweshe always told church members that his wife had not reformed from her old habits and because of this, he would end his life. He made several suicide attempts before.
We don’t know why his employers gave him a gun at work as he had suicidal tendencies.

Chiweshe was buried in Dambamuromo Village on 11 March.

Security Guard Shoots Self Over Wife’s Extra-marital Affairs

A security guard at a mining company in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Bindura">Bindura</a>, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mashonaland_Central">Mashonaland Central Province</a>, was killed after he accidentally discharged his firearm last week.
Decide Masosote accidentally shot himself in the abdomen and died on his way to the hospital.
Mashonaland Central province police spokesperson Inspector Milton Mundembe confirmed the case to <a href="https://bulawayo24.com/index-id-news-sc-national-byo-228186.html">Bulawayo24 News</a>. He said:

I can confirm a sudden death case in Bindura where a security guard Decide Masosote accidentally shot himself in the abdomen and his intestines protruded from the stomach.
He was rushed to Bindura hospital and he died along the way.
</blockquote>
Masosote accidentally pulled the trigger and shot himself while standing close to one Kelvin Muzambi who was welding.

Security Guard Accidentally Shoots Self, Dies

The Zimbabwe Federation of Trade Unions (ZFTU) has implored security companies to give women first priority to perform their duties during day time.
The call was made by ZFTU secretary-general, Kenias Shamuyarira while commenting on the case of a 31-year-old woman employed as a security guard in Bulawayo, who was recently raped while on night duty by her supervisor.
The female security guard’s supervisor allegedly visited her on the pretext that he was monitoring guards on duty and raped her.
Shamuyarira said that besides their vulnerability to abuse and harassment, women also had other responsibilities in the home as mothers, therefore they should work during the day. He said:

Let us not run away from the fact that women have got other extra responsibilities of looking after children at home, making sure that they are cooked for and bathed.
So, we need to make sure that such duties give leverage, and give leeway for a woman who is in the security industry to perform such other duties because they are needed, whether we like it or not.
I think it is dependent on the security industry workers union and their National Employment Council (NEC) to make sure that they seek and strive to balance the recent case and make sure that the security women are given priority to perform their duties during day time up until we have a conducive environment here in Zimbabwe.
