Zimbabweans have called for the release of Karoline Silver Mafra, a Brazilian woman who is stuck in Chikurubi Female Prison in Zimbabwe despite being acquitted of a drug trafficking charge last year.
Mafra has gained the attention of many Zimbabweans after she appeared in a video featuring the incarcerated Mai Titi at Chikurubi Female Prison in Zimbabwe went viral on social media.
Mafra is stuck in Chikurubi Female Prison in Zimbabwe due to a lack of funds and a passport to return home. Despite being found not guilty, she remains in prison due to her lawyer misplacing her passport and her inability to afford a plane ticket back to Brazil.
Social media users have expressed their sympathy for her situation, with some calling for her release and assistance to return home.
According to reports, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2022/07/20/brazilian-drug-dealer-zimbabwean-couple-arrested-and-jailed/">Mafra and her colleagues were arrested</a> at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in April 2022 after police received information that she was coming to Zimbabwe with drugs. The couple, who had been instructed by a Nigerian individual named Bobby to pick up Mafra, were interviewed by detectives and led them to their residence, where detectives discovered seven sachets of heroin hidden between fabric samples in their bedroom. The seized heroin was worth over ZW$1.6 million. Mafra was convicted of unlawfully dealing with dangerous drugs and was initially believed to have been sentenced to seven years in prison for drug trafficking. However, it was later reported that she and her supposed accomplice were acquitted of the charges.
Despite being acquitted, Mafra remains in prison due to her passport being misplaced by her lawyer and her inability to afford a plane ticket to Brazil. Sources suggest that Mafra is a fluent Shona speaker and is a kind person. She also has a son in Brazil who is almost six or seven years old.
Mafra’s case highlights the challenges faced by foreigners in the Zimbabwean legal system, and the difficulties of navigating bureaucratic processes in a foreign country. The case also raises questions about the treatment of individuals who are acquitted of charges but are still detained due to circumstances beyond their control. Mafra’s situation is a reminder of the importance of providing support to individuals who are in need, particularly those who are stranded in foreign countries without proper resources or documentation.

Zimbabweans Call For Release Of Brazilian Woman Stuck At Chikurubi

Zimbabwe’s main airport, the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport (RGMI) in Harare, has reportedly become a human trafficking hotspot.
It is alleged that human trafficking syndicates made up of State security agents and political heavyweights are facilitating illegal entry into the country for foreign nationals en route to South Africa.
<a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/thestandard/news/article/200007062/rgm-airport-a-human-trafficking-hotspot">The Standard </a>reported that state security details at the airport were worried that agencies such as the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) were ignoring reports of illegal entry through the airport.
A Military Intelligence Department (MID) operative who was deployed at the airport was allegedly arrested recently on suspicion of conniving with immigration officers to facilitate the illegal entry of four Indian officials into the country. Said the source:

The Indian nationals were intercepted by MID and the taxi driver, who was transporting them implicated a member of MID who was stationed at the airport.
People involved in this brag that nothing will happen to them as they have the protection of their bosses.

Four immigration officials were reportedly arrested for their alleged involvement in the scandal.
Respect Gono, the Immigration Department director-general, told The Standard that mainly Pakistanis and Ethiopians were being trafficked. She said:

We have Pakistan and Ethiopian nationals mainly being trafficked into the country, giving us problems.
The majority of them are going to South Africa in search of greener pastures.
South Africa has stringent measures, so Ethiopians prefer to come via Zimbabwe.
We currently have no global management system, which can track these activities.
But we are expecting to launch it soon.
When that system is now in place you will see things improving.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told The Standard he was not aware of reports of human trafficking at the RGMI Airport. He said:

This is the first time I heard that there is a problem of human trafficking at the airport.
Firstly, I want to find out and secondly, if there are such reports then we should have those people who have the information come forward and report so that investigations can be conducted.

RGM Airport A Human Trafficking Hotspot... Security Agents, Political Bigwigs Implicated

Zimbabwe’s Vice President Constantino Chiwenga who doubles as the Minister of Health and Child Care received half a million of the Sinopharm vaccine doses from the People’s Republic of China this Sunday.
The Health Ministry announced the development in a statement saying the vaccines were received at Robert Gabriel International Airport.
Chiwenga spoke to journalists after taking delivery of the 500 000 Sinopharm vaccine doses expressing his gratitude to the Asian country. He said:

I am pleased that to date, Zimbabwe has received a total donation of one million (1000 000) vaccines from the People’s Republic of China.
As a Ministry, we applaud the consistency with which the People’s Republic of China has complimented our efforts to fight and conquer this dreaded virus.
Since the devastating pandemic was first reported in this country on 20 March 2020, China has been generously providing both technical and material assistance, to augment our own efforts as a country.

The Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Guo Shaochun said that 500 000 doses received today will be another boost to Zimbabwe’s national vaccination programme.
He said Zimbabwe and China have fought side by side in the wake of a pandemic with the former receiving personal protective equipment (PPEs) and vaccines.
As of Saturday 25 September 2021, over three million people in Zimbabwe had received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine against a targeted 10 million.

China Donates Half A Million Sinopharm Vaccines

<div dir="auto">Fourteen (14) Zimbabweans deported from the United Kingdom (UK) arrived this Thursday at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport only to be whisked away in ZUPCO buses.</div>

Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade acting spokesperson Mr Livit Mugejo said only 14 deportees arrived out of 50 who were expected. Said Mugejo:
<blockquote>The number is now down to 14 due to an outbreak of Covid-19 in some detention centres. Others also successfully raised last-minute objections with the courts and were allowed to appeal their deportations due to what they say changed circumstances.</blockquote>
Government officials at the Airport took the deportees to the Zimbabwe Institute of Public Administration and Management (ZIPAM) in Darwendale where they will be kept for 10 days before they rejoin their families.
The officials also denied journalists permission to interview, photograph or film their arrival.
Zupco buses escorted by police officers lay in wait for the deportees, driving off once they had taken their seats.
State broadcaster ZBC was the only one given access to film them.
The deportees are a fraction of about five hundred (500) Zimbabweans who are set to be deported from the UK, authorities have said.
The UK is saying it is deporting individuals who were convicted of serious crimes like murder whom the Secretary for the Home department, Priti Patel, says do not have a place in that country.

Deported Zimbabweans Arrive, Whisked Away In ZUPCO Buses

A Harare man, Thamsanqa Mpofu who was on his way to the United Kingdom (UK) was deported back to Zimbabwe in Ethiopia after it was discovered that he was using a passport that did not belong to him.
Zim Morning Post reports that Mpofu was allowed passage out of the country after he allegedly presented to the immigration officials a British passport belonging to one Bootha King Jesse.
Mpofu then boarded a plane to Ethiopia which would later connect him to the UK. The fraud was however discovered by Ethiopian immigration officials who then deported him back to Zimbabwe.
He was immediately arrested upon his arrival at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport on December 21.
Mpofu appeared before the court this Tuesday where he was granted ZWL100 bail on the condition that he reports once a week at the Rhodesville Police Station.
He was remanded to February 25, 2020.

Zimbabwean En Route To UK Deported Back To Zimbabwe In Ethiopia

The expansion of the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport is said to be 10 per cent done, with Parliament expressing satisfaction with the work that has been covered to date.
The expansion project is being done by Jiangsu International of China at a cost of US$153 million.
This was revealed on Thursday when the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Transport and Infrastructural Development toured the airport. Portfolio committee chairman Oscar Gorerino had this to say:
<blockquote>The idea of the expansion is good, we toured airports last week and the Victoria Falls International Airport is part of what this contractor did.
We hope Robert Mugabe International Airport will raise its standards to meet the correct standards.
There is an improvement on the progress because there is now a lot of changes since the last time we came here in terms of structures, and they are moving forward, so basically the terms in which they are moving is quite good.</blockquote>

RGM International Airport Expansion Project Progressing Well - Report

In an interview with The Chronicle, Zanu-PF Youth League secretary, Pupurai Togarepi, said they are supporting the call by the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) to have Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport renamed.
Said Togarepi:
<blockquote>The airport had a name before it was named Robert Mugabe and when it suited us, we changed it. In the same vein it is our prerogative as a nation to rename the same airport as we wish. Zimbabwe is not Robert Mugabe’s kingdom but belongs to Zimbabweans, therefore we support the decision made by our elders without any hesitation or regrets.</blockquote>
Children of Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association secretary general John Muchenje said they also support the war veterans saying Mugabe and his family do not have title deeds of the country.

Zanu-PF Youths Also Want Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport Renamed

The Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) has called for the renaming of the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport after denouncing the former president as a traitor. The war veterans denounced Mugabe and his wife, former first lady Grace Mugabe for allegedly working with opposition leaders Nelson Chamisa and Tendai Biti to cause chaos in the country. The former freedom fighters said they would rather have the airport named after late hero Herbert Chitepo. Speaking at a press conference, ZNLWVA secretary-general Victor Matemadanda said
<blockquote>We are going to demand the removal of Robert Mugabe’s name from the international airport in Harare. Tomorrow we are going to Harare international airport to demand the removal of Mugabe’s dirty name. Mugabe has failed. We cannot have the face of Zimbabwe to the world – given the name of a last minute traitor. We don’t want.
…Handing over petition so that Mugabe’s name is removed at the airport with immediate effect. He does not deserve such an honour as he has taken a betrayal stance…He has strayed and chose an unholy matrimony with MDC. Tomorrow we are going to Harare International Airport not Robert Mugabe to demand the removal of that name because Mugabe is a last-minute traitor. We want names of our heroes, not sellouts…The name Robert Gabriel Mugabe will be remembered for a leader who gave up his flock to raveners</blockquote>
The airport was renamed last November after then Zanu-PF youth secretary Kudzanai Chipanga threatened not to invite ministers to the 2018 edition of the 21st February Movement celebrations if the Airport was not renamed. A few weeks after the renaming ceremony Mugabe lost power after the Zimbabwe Defence Forces launched Operation Restore Legacy.
