Eric Matinenga, a former Constitutional Affairs Minister, has said that Nelson Chamisa’s decision to leave the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) was rushed. In a statement seen by Pindula News, Matinenga suggested that Chamisa should have consulted key stakeholders and the public before making such a move. He proposed that MPs and Senators write a joint letter to dissociate themselves from the “fictitious” Sengezo Tshabangu-led CCC. He said:
<blockquote>
I am advised, which advice I accept, that Nelson Chamisa was placed in such a suffocating environment that he had to conduct himself in the manner/way he did.
I give him the benefit of the doubt.
I am unable to provide detailed facts which informed that advice.
Am sure there are people who are better able to do so, if they so wish.
In my view however, the decision (for Nelson Chamisa to quit CCC) was a rushed one.
There was need to consult and get the buy in of relevant critical stakeholders. Ideally, the citizenry should have been consulted, a consultation which could not be carried out in the limited suffocating circumstances.
There are certain stakeholders and issues which must be addressed now if they were not addressed at the time the decision to remove oneself from CCC.
Parliament sits on Monday, there is time before Monday for Nelson Chamisa to meet the true CCC members, interrogate issues in a no-holds-barred manner and come to a common way forward.
I am aware that certain MPs have indicated their respective courses of action.
My suggestion is that all MPs and Senators address a joint letter to the Speaker of Parliament and President of the Senate dissociating themselves from the fictitious Sengezo Tshabangu CCC and identifying their leader of the house.
Chamisa must do a supporting letter and dare Tshabangu to recall the MPs.
If recalled, they should not contest the recalls.
There are cases before the courts challenging recalls in one way or the other.
Instructions must be withdrawn so that they are not argued when called. The by-elections on 3 February must be forgotten.

However, Peter Gift Mutasa, former President of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions, disagreed with the joint approach, stating that Chamisa had given each member the freedom to choose their stance. Ibbo D Mandaza, an academic, supported Matinenga’s views. Some argued that Chamisa’s decision was influenced by the challenging political environment he faced.
Some CCC Members of Parliament (MPs) have since announced their withdrawal from Parliament and pledged to support Nelson Chamisa who is expected to launch a new political party.

Former Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) president Peter Mutasa says the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) should resort to”guerrilla tactics” amid a systematic ban on opposition rallies by the Police.
CCC leader Nelson Chamisa recently said Police have banned more than 60 of the party’s rallies across the country.
Opposition activists have also been brutally attacked by suspected ZANU PF supporters during some of their campaign activities.
<a href="https://www.zimlive.com/mutasa-urges-ccc-to-employ-guerilla-tactics-amid-state-crackdown/">ZimLive</a> quoted Mutasa as saying CCC should adopt underground campaign methods to be able to canvass for votes ahead of the general elections set to be held later this year. Mutasa said:

Zimbabwe is a military dictatorship. There is no doubt that the constitution has been suspended and constitutional rights taken away.
Citizens can no longer exercise freedom of expression, association or assembly.
Opposition gatherings are banned and their leaders are detained without trial.
Journalists are arrested for exposing corruption and trade unionists are brutalized for demanding better working conditions.
Under such circumstances, the opposition must not be predictable.
It must use guerrilla tactics and underground political activities to fully exercise their constitutional rights that are being unlawfully limited by state agencies.

Former ZCTU President Urges CCC To Employ "Guerilla Tactics" Amid Systematic Rallies Ban

Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition (CiCZ) chairperson Peter Mutasa says Zimbabwe has become a banana republic and a mafia State since the November 2017 coup that ended the late former president Robert Mugabe’s long reign.
According to online sources, a mafia state is a state system where organised crime has permeated the government to such an extent that government officials, the police, and/or the military become a part of the criminal enterprise.
Speaking during an interview with <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200004113/zim-now-a-banana-republic-mafia-state">NewsDay’s</a> Lorraine Muromo, Mutasa said that government business has been captured by organised criminal gangs who are fleecing the country dry thereby pushing the majority of citizens into poverty. Said Mutasa:

The country has been turned into a banana republic or a mafia state. There are a few gangsters or roving bandits that have taken charge of the country and its resources.
The majority are wallowing in poverty while a few elite are living in opulence. Organised criminal gangs fleecing the country dry through corruption and thuggery have captured government business.
As a result and in order for them to continue pillaging the resources of the country, the mafia state has taken away the rights of citizens.
The regime has suspended the Constitution and stripped citizens of any rights. We have seen heightened political violence, abductions, torture and persecution of opposition and civic society activists since the current regime came in through a (November 2017) coup.
We have seen draconian laws such as the PVOs Bill, Amendment of the Constitution, some provisions of both Labour Amendment Bill and Health Services Amendment Bill all seeking to curtail citizens’ freedoms.
Cabinet recently approved amendment of the Criminal Codification Act wherein the regime seeks to further curtail freedom of expression and criminalise civic society engagement with the world.
The late former President Robert Mugabe was bad but this government has made him look like a lesser dictator.

Zimbabwe Now A Banana Republic, Mafia State - Mutasa

The Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition (CiZC) has demanded the implementation of the recommendations made by the Motlanthe Commission which was established to investigate the 1 August 2018 killings.
Six civilians were shot dead by soldiers in central Harare during protests over delays in announcing presidential election results.
Thirty-five others were wounded in the shootings, forcing President Emmerson Mnangagwa to appoint a commission headed by former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe, to probe the killings.
The Motlanthe Commission, recommended, among other things, compensation to families of the deceased as well as prosecution of the killers.
In a letter dated October 18, 2022, addressed to the Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Ziyambi Ziyambi, CiZC chairperson Peter Mutasa said:

We address you in your capacity as the chairperson of the Inter-Ministerial Taskforce which was tasked with addressing issues arising from the findings of the Motlanthe Commission of Inquiry report.
We write to your esteemed office expressing our reservations over the failure of the Government of Zimbabwe to implement recommendations of the seven-member Motlanthe Commission of Inquiry following the events of August 1, 2018, that resulted in the death of six civilians at the hands of the army following protests over the late announcement of Presidential election results in Harare.

Mutasa raised the issue of security sector reforms which he said should be addressed. He said:

So far, the Government of Zimbabwe has not instituted security sector reforms to ensure that the military acts within the provisions of the Constitution of Zimbabwe and in conformity with human rights norms and standards.
The State is still to implement Section 210 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe that provides for an Independent Complaints Mechanism for receiving and investigating complaints from the members of the public about misconduct on the part of members of the security services, and for remedying any harm caused by such misconduct.
The Independent Complaints Mechanism is a crucial body in light of the increasing cases of human rights abuses linked to security.

CiZC Demands Implementation Of Motlanthe Commission Recommendations

Bank workers are considering industrial action following the recent denial by their employers to pay part of their salaries in US dollars.
The Zimbabwe Banks and Allied Workers Union (ZIBAWU) believes banks have the capacity to pay their workers in foreign currency after the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s (RBZ) Mid-Term Monetary Policy Statement revealed that the banking sector’s profitability increased 12-fold during the first half of 2022. The MPS said:
<blockquote>
The banking sector recorded unaudited aggregate profits of ZW$181.25 billion for the half-year ended 30 June 2022, a 12-fold increase from aggregate profits of ZW$15.09 billion reported in the corresponding period in 2021.

Speaking to <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/crippling-strike-hovers-above-banking-sector-over-us-salary-portions/">NewZimbabwe.com</a> on Monday, ZIBAWU secretary general, Peter Mutasa, said there is no justification for the banking sector to fail to pay USD salaries considering that a “broke” government is managing to pay part of civil servants’ salaries in US dollars. Said Mutasa:
<blockquote>
Employers are refusing to peg salaries in US$ and also refusing to pay part of the salaries in US dollars.
This is despite the fact that all bank charges and fees are pegged on the US$ and move with the exchange rate.
On our part, we have a clear mandate from the workers that salaries in the sector must be based on US$ and part of it be paid in US$.
Our understanding is that if a broke employer like the government can stretch out and pay in foreign currency, what justification do profiteering banks have to decline the proposals?

Mutasa said employees in the sector have settled for US$636 with an option to pay 50% in US$ and another portion in Zimbabwe dollars.
But the employers want to pay ZW$295,000 wholly paid in local currency, a development that has pushed the workers to consider picketing. Said Mutasa:

We have started our consultations, but it is clear we are going to mount serious countrywide pickets and other collective actions permissible by law.
</blockquote>
Currently, the lowest-paid employee in the banking sector is earning ZW$220,000 all-inclusive.

Bank Workers Mull Industrial Action Over USD Salary Component

The government reportedly gave ZW$1 000 only as “compensation” to families of the August 1, 2018 army shooting victims, NewsDay Weekender reported.
The amount, given to assist in the burial of those killed by army personnel during the post-election protests over the delayed announcement of presidential election results, translates to less than US$2.
Last week, the Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition (CiCZ) hosted a roundtable discussion to measure progress on the implementation of the recommendations of the commission where families of the deceased victims expressed sadness over their neglect.
Alison Charles, who lost her brother Galvin Dean, could not hold back her tears saying her brother “was killed like a dog”. Alison said in-between tears:
<blockquote>
My brother died like a dog. He was never a violent person. 
I have tried litigation to no avail. The government is untouchable and unapproachable. The only compensation we got from the government was the $1 000 deposited into our accounts to cover some funeral expenses.
It was not even enough at the time as we were assisted by loved ones and friends.
</blockquote>
Maxwell Tauro said he wanted justice to find closure over the killing of his son Charles Tauro. 
He said his “wounds are still fresh” adding that he “can’t even maintain my son’s grave because I have no money. He was our breadwinner.” Tauro added:
<blockquote>
I am also demanding justice. We need to know the perpetrators.
</blockquote>
CiCZ chairperson Peter Mutasa said August 1, 2018, brings sad memories and expressed regret that there is no will on the part of the government to compensate the victims.
<h2>Some Context:</h2>
President Emmerson Mnangagwa narrowly beat opposition leader Nelson Chamisa in the disputed elections, with the case spilling into the Constitutional Court, where Chamisa lost the challenge.
During the post-election protests the army, using live ammunition, opened fire on fleeing protesters, killing:
<blockquote>
i). Silvia Maphosa, 
ii). Galvin Dean Charles, 
iii). Ishmael Kumire, 
iv). Jealous Chakandira, 
v). Challenge Tauro and 
vi). Brian Zhuwawo.

Thirty-five others were wounded in the shootings in Harare’s central business district.
The killings attracted the attention of the international community prompting Mnangagwa to appoint a commission of inquiry, headed by former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe, to investigate the killings.
Among a raft of recommendations, the commission said families of the deceased should be compensated and that perpetrators be held accountable.
Opposition leader Linda Masarira, who testified before the Motlanthe commission, donated five bags of cement to Tauro for his son’s grave.
She said there is no political will to compensate the victims adding that there should be a special fund to compensate the families.

The former president of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Congress_of_Trade_Unions">Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)</a>, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Peter_Mutasa">Peter Mutasa</a> has said trade unionist, Robert Muwawa who was reportedly abducted after leading a strike at Strauss Logistics is alive.
The drivers at Strauss Logistics embarked on industrial action over “victimisation in the transport industry,” according to the Zimbabwe Truck Drivers Union which represents haulage truck drivers.
The union said Muwawa, Strauss Logistics Workers Committee Secretary, went missing on Wednesday afternoon after receiving threatening calls from Assistant Inspector Mutema from <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Republic_Police">Zimbabwe Republic Police</a> (ZRP) Southerton.
In an update, Mutasa said Muwawa was found in “a bush and picked up by good Samaritans.” He added:

Trade Unionist Robert Muwawa Abducted After Leading A Strike At Strauss Logistics

Zimbabwe Congress Of Trade Unions through its leader Peter Mutasa has said the government should set minimum wages to deal with vulnerabilities, Business Times reports.
The matter came to light as Mutasa was commenting on the minimum wage his union is lobbying for. ZCTU is proposing that minimum wage be pegged at $USD 250 as he said the government was negotiating with unions in bad faith up to the point of barring his union from attending negotiation forums. Said Mutasa:
<blockquote>It’s clear that the ill-advised de-dollarisation project has failed dismally, resulting in employers putting salaries last (on their obligations list),” president of the country’s main labour body, the ZCTU, Peter Mutasa told a Business Times in collaboration with Econometer Global Capital virtual salaries meeting last week.
We are in a vicious circle. We need a national minimum wage to deal with vulnerabilities. Currency is not forced on people.
The economic agency has rejected (the Zimbabwe dollar). Workers are being shortchanged because everything is now indexed on the US dollar except salaries. We can’t negotiate for Zimbabwe dollars. We cannot sustain it because of the environment we are in. We want salaries in a currency that is stable.
Zimbabwe cannot continue on this pathetic route. Our current situation is a failed State. We cannot allow businesses to transact in US dollars and prioritise other obligations in US dollars, leaving out salaries. We are proposing that we look at the 2018 agreement where workers were getting US$500 on average. Now, workers are earning less than US$40 (in real terms). We go for 50% of the 2018 average figure which amounts to US$250.
But business is not comfortable with that. And we are saying we can’t be stupid to negotiate for Zimbabwe dollars.</blockquote>
On not being able to negotiate on the Tripartite Negotiating Forum Mutasa said the government should allow them to present the workers under their union’s grievances to their government:
<blockquote>So, it’s not possible to dialogue at the moment because social partners are regarded as terrorists. How then do you dialogue? The Tripartite Negotiation Forum (TNF) is expected to resume next month. Mutasa said workers should not expect anything from TNF as government has no culture of negotiation. How do you sit down with government terrorists?
It’s not possible.Our leaders (ZCTU) cannot visit government offices, so it’s not possible unless government declassify us, we will not be able to go for the TNF meeting.</blockquote>
Economists have however said companies might not be able to pay wages in USD as it was not sustainable because the economy took a huge knock from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Your Ill-Advised De-Dollarisation Project Has Failed Dismally - ZCTU Urges The Govt To Allow Them To Attend Next Month's Negotiation Forum

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has vowed to continue mobilising workers to protest until the government addresses their legitimate grievances.
In a statement on Sunday, ZCTU president Peter Mutasa said the ZANU PF-led government is now behaving like the racist Rhodesian and Apartheid governments by seeking to kill and jail union leaders. Said Mutasa:
<blockquote>Until workers get a fair deal, unions will continue to carry out their legitimate roles. These include mobilising workers for strikes and other lawful means of protests.
The demands of workers are genuine and the call for action is legitimate. Instead of seeking to kill and jail trade union leaders, the government must address the genuine grievances of workers and citizens.
It is a pity that in a supposed independent Zimbabwe, the police and military are being used to horribly suppress citizens. This is only equal to colonial Rhodesia or South African apartheid and it’s a sad indictment on our yester-year liberators.
… For workers and trade unions, we have no choice than continuing to push for better conditions. Almost all workers have been enslaved and struggling under extremely poor working conditions reminiscent of colonial-era oppressive conditions.</blockquote>

ZCTU Won't Relent Until Govt Addresses Workers' Grievances - Mutasa

ZCTU has claimed it tried to intervene and find a mediator between Chamisa and Khupe’s 2018 political impasse and Khupe strongly rejected the offer despite Chamisa being open to dialogue and intervention, Open Parly reports.
This was revealed by the union’s president Peter Mutasa in an interview with the publication. Mutasa said:
<blockquote>We tried to intervene, to offer ourselves for mediation in 2018, unfortunately, Dr Thokozani Khupe rejected that offer she uttered very strong words and messages to us.
She didn’t like any intervention any mediation, the other group of Advocate Chamisa had indicated that they were willing for us or someone to intervene. It didn’t mean we were the ones who were going to mediate or intervene, we could have looked for eminent people to intervene, some people with wisdom</blockquote>
Mutasa went on to say Khupe rejecting the mediation could mean she had another way of getting what she wanted eventually:
<blockquote>What we concluded is that the other end, Khupe’s camp was not interested in mediation and from what we are now seeing we think they understood they had other powers and other means to address their own crisis so we left it there,</blockquote>
Khupe was made the interim MDC T leader by the court which reinstated the MDC T 2014 party structures. Ever since that ruling, she has so far recalled 21 legislators who were under the MDC Alliance banner.

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions has called on workers to stay at home till the government lifts all movement restrictions, The Daily News reports.
According to the publication, ZCTU made the call after it received numerous reports that workers are being harassed at checkpoints manned by the army and police officers and people are having problem commuting to and fro work because ZUPCO buses cant services all commuters on time.
Speaking to the publication, ZCTU president Peter Mutasa said:
<blockquote>What we are saying is that going to work is now a risk vocation. We are also saying workers should not endanger themselves by waking up early because they would need to find transport to go to work, risking their lives to robbers and humiliation at the hands of security forces, who are asking them to go back home.
We are urging workers everywhere to go to work when they are safe and when the government wants them to do so. This is so because, at the moment it is the government which is telling the government workers not to go to work.</blockquote>

ZCTU Calls For A Stayaway Till The Lockdown Is Lifted

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Union (ZCTU) has criticised the government and the business community for failing to provide resources to cushion the citizenry from the effects of the coronavirus induced national lockdown.
ZCTU president, Peter Mutasa said that the government had ignored the union’s advice to review the proposed relief fund (ZW$200) up to make it commensurate with economic dynamics in the country.
In a statement to commemorate the International Workers’ Day, Mutasa said:
<blockquote>We could not allow workers to die for profits in the face of Covid-19.
However, we are disappointed that despite our advice to the government and business on the need to avail social safety nets for citizens during these difficult times, nothing has materialised.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, the Minister of Labour, Paul Mavima recently announced that <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/05/01/govt-yet-to-disburse-cushioning-funds-for-vulnerable-people/">the “paltry” $200 meant for vulnerable people had not yet been disbursed.</a>
On Friday, President Mnangagwa extended the national lockdown by further 14 days and relaxed regulations adding that he was prioritising saving lives over the economy.

Workers' Union Criticises Govt And Business For "Neglecting The Citizenry"

Workers have expressed concern following Thursday’s announcement by the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Reserve_Bank_of_Zimbabwe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ)</a> allowing holders of free funds to pay for goods and services in foreign currency while fixing the exchange rate at $25 to US$1.
<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Congress_of_Trade_Unions" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)</a> president <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Peter_Mutasa" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Peter Mutasa</a> queried why the RBZ had allowed businesses to accept foreign currency while it was silent on workers’ salaries. Said Mutasa:
<blockquote>It is clear that now that businesses have been allowed to accept the US dollar, it will eventually push out the Zimbabwe dollar from the market, yet the policy is silent on workers’ salaries.
We also think the RBZ governor should have announced a holistic policy without using the pandemic because the question that then arises is what will happen afterwards?
Will we revert to the Zimbabwe dollar again? We think these inconsistencies will further confuse the market.</blockquote>
RBZ Governor John Mangudya also announced the suspension of increases in all electronic charges in order to promote digital payments during the coronavirus emergency.

'Will We Resort To The Zimbabwe Dollar Again?'

The <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/01/13/civil-servants-govt-reach-impasse-in-salary-negotiations/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU)</a> has called upon all workers, formally employed and those in the informal sector, to come together and confront the government in protest over slave wages.
ZCTU secretary-general <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Peter_Mutasa" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Peter Mutasa</a> scoffed at President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s remarks that people should not pine for meat but rather eat vegetables for their health. Said Mutasa:
<blockquote>The issue that is bringing us all together as people is that of hunger. Every person who is working in this country must not be forced to eat vegetables and potatoes. A worker must get money enough to purchase foods that constitute a balanced diet.
Our message is that we do not have any other way to go because most avenues have been closed, but we now need to fight oppression and exploitation of workers. We do not have any other choice.
So that is our first message (to workers) that we are going ahead with demonstrations and we are going to maintain our stance of fighting government policies which are oppressing the people.</blockquote>
In January 2019, ZCTU called for a mass stay away after the government had unilaterally hiked the price of fuel by over 130 per cent.
Protests erupted across the country in response to the price hike and Union leaders were subsequently charged with treason.

We Want A Balanced Diet, Not Veggies & Potatoes - ZCTU

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Congress_of_Trade_Unions" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Union (ZCTU)</a> has urged workers in particular and citizens, in general, not to look up to ruling elites but to join the “resistance” against the government’s “stupid” policies.
Speaking to Daily News on Monday, ZCTU president <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Peter_Mutasa" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Peter Mutasa</a> argued that citizens’ sufferings are being orchestrated by the same people. He said:
<blockquote>Workers and citizens must not look up to the ruling elites who don’t care about our plight. The suffering of the masses is orchestrated by the same people.
While everyone else is suffering, the ruling elites are pillaging and looting the natural and other resources of the country. There is no incentive for them to change the way things are.
As a result, the workers and citizens must free themselves from this bondage … the ZCTU urges every one of them to join in the resistance against stupid policies that have impoverished us such as austerity.</blockquote>
Mutasa is among a significant number of trade unionists and political and human rights activists who are facing charges of subversion related to the January fuel protests.
In January 2019, ZCTU called for a mass stay-away to force the government to address the various socio-economic challenges Zimbabweans have to contend with.

ZCTU: Workers & Citizens Should 'Resist' Govt's 'Stupid' Policies

Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) president, Peter Mutasa told the Daily News that Zimbabwe is headed for disaster unless the powers that be change the country’s trajectory.
Mutasa bemoaned the power cuts affecting the country which have become a threat to workers as jobs are lost as a result of de-industrialisation.
The negative effects of the power cuts are felt at the household level too, Mutasa argued. He said:
<blockquote>We are heading for a disaster unless those in charge see things the way we see it and change course.
Companies are closing down and some in the tobacco sector are thinking of relocating to other countries.
Some workers are being returned home because the companies are not producing.
There is going to be serious de-industrialisation at this rate and this country is going to shut down at some point.
There is no food for families, children are dying because there is no money for medical fees, while many children are dropping out of school because their parents do not have money.
We are facing a serious humanitarian crisis because people are going to work but can’t afford necessities.
The workers now need to look for alternative energy like firewood and gas, which wipes away their income.
… There is a need for a new trajectory that will alleviate the challenges, support the informal sector, redistribute wealth and deal with corruption.</blockquote>

Zimbabwe Headed For Disaster Unless There Is Change - ZCTU President

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) says that it will continue agitating for workers to be paid their salaries in US dollars.
The labour body made the call despite the fact that the government recently outlawed the use of the multi-currency system in domestic transactions.
ZCTU president Peter Mutasa said that the government of Zimbabwe has been taking workers for granted for a long time. He said:
<blockquote>Before banning the US dollar, Mthuli had assured the nation a day before that the Zimbabwean dollar will only be introduced when macro-economic fundamentals are in place.
The government has been taking its people for granted for quite some time now when it introduced bond notes in 2016 that they were adequately backed by lines of credit from the AFREXIM Bank.
Clearly, in all records, the working people of Zimbabwe have lost substantial value in their earnings as they work in the fast depreciating RTGS.</blockquote>
The government last week promulgated Statutory Instrument 142 of 2019 which banned the multi-currency regime while at the same time reintroducing the Zimbabwe Dollar.
The move was met with mixed reactions with some sections of society viewing it as a stroke of genius while in some quarters it set the country on the path towards the 2008 scenario.

ZCTU Demands That Workers Be Paid Salaries In US Dollars

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions has disowned calls for a national shutdown by social movement Tjamuka/Sesijikile.
Tajamuka spokesperson Promise Mkwananzi issued a statement through a video last week, calling for an indefinite stay away starting on July 1 (today).
The workers’ body has however distanced itself from the call, saying its council will meet this week to map the way forward.
Speaking to journalists on Sunday, ZCTU president Peter Mutasa said:
<blockquote>The ZCTU is not part of the group that has called for tomorrow (today)’s shutdown. As a membership-based organisation, we have to consult and get a mandate from our members in terms of our constitution and processes.
Our decision-making body, the general counsel, will be meeting this week to decide and announce the way forward, based on views from the workers.
We are never against any citizen or groups that advocate for peaceful protests in terms of the Constitution of the country.
However, unlike other groups, as a membership-driven organisation, ZCTU leaders cannot commit the organisation without consultations and an inclusive decision.
It is in this vein that we view the inclusion of our organisation or any other organisation’s name without our consent and without discussing with us as problematic.
For unions, this creates divisions as some members would genuinely complain that leaders are making unilateral decisions.</blockquote>

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has urged President Emmerson Mnangagwa to urgently engage business and labour for a Tripartite Negotiating Forum (TNF) meeting to address economic challenges being faced by the nation.

The largest labour federation in the country warned that the situation might go out of hand and demonstrations would be inevitable if the president fails to call for a national TNF.

This seems like a precautionary measure considering that its January stay away which degenerated into chaos resulted in several civilians losing their lives as soldiers shot at them.</div>

ZCTU Urges President Mnangagwa To Engage Business & Workers Or Risk Chaos

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has pleaded with President Emmerson Mnangagwa to convene a Tripartite Negotiating Forum (TNF) meeting as a matter of urgency.
In a letter dated May 29 and addressed to Mnangagwa by ZCTU president Peter Mutasa, the labour body warned that the nation is on edge as a result of the economic hardships being experienced by the masses. He wrote:

ZCTU is credited with calling for a stay away in January over a government decision to hike the price of fuel by over 150 per cent.
The stay away however degenerated into violence and looting as citizens vented out their anger and frustration, with the ZCTU leaders arrested and charged with treason.

ZCTU Tells Mnangagwa To Act Fast, Nation Is On Edge

It is reported that the Bank has already issued a circular that resulted in the cutting of 20 jobs at a Harare based unit.
Hapanyengwi opined that outsourcing some activities to the parent’s global business services division is aimed at trimming costs as more customers embrace digital banking. She also said that the Bank would “redeploy impacted staff wherever possible.”

Peter Mutasa, president of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions, said that the Bank started last year retrenching people. He also said that the government must have policies that compel employees to take care of employees upon retrenchment.
Mutasa also revealed that there are other companies and mines which are halting operations due to the current economic crisis.

Standard Chartered Cuts 20 Jobs, Migrates Some Operations To Asia

Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) leader Peter Mutasa was charged and detained for allegedly subverting a constitutional government or inciting public violence.
Mutasa was arrested when he presented himself to police in the company of his lawyer, Alec Muchadehama. Muchadehama confirmed Mutasa’s arrest and charge. He said the ZCTU leader will appear in court today.
Police say Mutasa, together with Harare cleric and activist Evan Mawarire (now in custody), recorded and circulated on social media, a video calling on Zimbabweans to go on a three-day stay away last week. The call for a job boycott was in protest over government’s failure to turn around the country’s economic fortunes as well as the hiking of fuel prices. The stay away turned chaotic as angry citizens barricaded roads with burning tyres, damaged vehicles and looted businesses.
Mawarire’s High Court bail application ruling is expected on Tuesday next week.  ZCTU secretary general Japhet Moyo was arrested this week and detained. His bail application will be heard in the High Court this coming Monday.

ZCTU President Peter Mutasa Charged With Treason

The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) said Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) president Peter Mutasa handed himself to police in the company of his lawyer Alec Muchadehama.
Mutasa’s lawyers Mbidzo, Muchadehama and Makoni legal practitioners had written to police demanding to know if their client was on their wanted list. Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told The Herald on Thursday night that they wanted to interview Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) president Peter Mutasa, activist Promise Mkwananzi and some MDC Alliance party members in connection with last week’s protests.
