National Peace and Reconciliation Commission (NPRC) spokesperson, Obert Gutu, has criticised CCC spokesperson, Fadzayi Mahere over the remarks she made at the United Nations Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy 2023 in Switzerland on Tuesday.
Among other things, Mahere said Zimbabwe is under a dictatorship that is worse than during the late former president Robert Mugabe’s reign.
Speaking to <a href="https://zbcnews.co.zw/2023/05/19/mahere-under-fire-for-vilifying-the-country/">ZBC News</a>, Gutu said Mahere should have raised her concerns with the NPRC instead of using the United Nations Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy to air her grievances. Gutu said:
<blockquote>
We normally want to encourage people to be mindful of what we say, where we say it, and how we say it.
It’s very unfortunate when utterances that might have the effect of disturbing peace are made here in Zimbabwe or outside the country there might have the effect of disturbing the peace because I understand from my observation that a number of people are very upset about what she said in Geneva.
I happen to have watched the video as well and I’m saying from a peace-building perspective, those issues she raised could have been raised locally as they say the best approach is to use domestic remedies before you go out of your own house to talk about domestic issues.
As a peacebuilding institution mandated by the supreme of the land to build peace in Zimbabwe, we wouldn’t have to encourage any Zimbabwean who feels they want to have issues to discuss to be free to contact us or give us suggestions may be orally or in writing with regards to what they would want to be done about the issues or complaints that they have.
We believe that as NPRC at the end of the day peace-building affects everyone and if you say something that might have an effect of sticking emotions, which is what appears to be the case here, that would actually invite an inferno of emotions that might even lead to civil unrest in the country and it will be very unfortunate considering that we are already in elections where political emotions are running very high and one would want to believe that the whatever we do, whatever we say as Zimbabweans, political actors and non-political actors, we should always be mindful of the impact-end of effect it might have on the peacefulness of our beloved country.

Speaking in Switzerland, Mahere claimed that half of Zimbabwe’s population lives in extreme poverty while billions are being looted by the ruling elite.
She also said the conviction of Transform Zimbabwe (TZ) president Jacob Ngarivhume for incitement to public violence is a warning by the ruling elite that participating in opposition politics is punishable.
Mahere narrated her ordeal at the hands of State institutions and castigated the treatment of political opponents, prisoners, and judicial capture.
She recalled her treatment at Chikurubi Maximum Prison after her arrest on charges of undermining the authority of the police after she posted a video that had already been posted multiple times alleging that a police officer had struck dead a baby with a baton in Harare. Mahere said:

Two years ago, I woke up in an overcrowded jail cell in Zimbabwe’s Maximum Security Prison.
No water. No toilet. No underwear. No dignity. No rights.
Inmates ate watery porridge with their bare hands because spoons are not allowed.
Before lights were off, we had to line up in queues for roll call – groups A, B, C and D. D was for Dangerous.
Even though the other women there had committed crimes such as murder, armed robbery and infanticide, I alone was put in the dangerous group.
I had committed the dangerous crime of tweeting against police brutality.

Obert Gutu Criticises Mahere Over Her Remarks In Geneva

Former Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs deputy minister, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Obert_Gutu">Obert Gutu</a>, has said Zimbabwe could be Paradise if sanctions that were imposed on Zimbabwe by the West are removed. 
In Twitter posts seen by Pindula News, Gutu who is a National Peace and Reconciliation Commission (NPRC) commissioner said:

SANCTIONS AGAINST ZIMBABWE MUST FALL
Just imagine Zimbabwe without illegal sanctions! It would be real PARADISE. Lift all forms &amp; types of illegal sanctions against Zimbabwe &amp; let this beautiful country flourish!
</blockquote>
Gutu also said diaspora vote should be granted only after all sanctions have been removed in order to “give all political parties unfettered access to campaign in the diaspora.”
Although President Emmerson Mnangagwa pledged in 2028 to extend voting rights to millions of Zimbabweans based abroad, that has not happened.
The government has cited several “reasons” to explain why Zimbabweans in the diaspora won’t be voting.
In June 2022, Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Ziyambi Ziyambi told Parliament that Zimbabweans based in the diaspora will not be able to vote in local elections in the foreseeable future saying Section 160 of <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/our-constitution-does-not-allow-diaspora-vote-ziyambi/">the country’s constitution does not provide for the diaspora vote.</a>
The government sometimes says it is not financially equipped to allow the diaspora to vote but critics say authorities in Harare are afraid that the citizens scattered all over the world would vote for the opposition.
Gutu’s remarks come ahead of the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/02/12/anti-sanctions-day-to-become-an-annual-event/">Anti-Sanctions day commemorated annually on the 25th of October</a> to pile up pressure on the United States to remove the restrictive measures on Zimbabwe.
The West imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe at the turn of the millennium following the fast-track land reform programme which was characterised by gross violation of human rights.
Gutu’s remarks drew criticism from Zimbabweans in the diaspora, human rights and political activists who argued that Zimbabweans living abroad did not attract sanctions on the southern African country.
Ousted Ntabazinduna chief and chairperson of MyRight2Vote, Nhlanhlayamangwe Ndiweni, said the international standard of democracy allows the diaspora to vote. The UK-based former traditional leader told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200002474/gutu-under-fire-over-sanctions-remarks">NewsDay</a>:

Gutu’s comments, by linking diaspora vote with targeted sanctions spoil the efforts to have diaspora voting. He is holding the Zimbabwe diaspora hostage to the sanctions issue. This year the UN human rights commission in Geneva rejected the link between sanctions and diaspora votes.

Human rights watchdog, Coalition for Citizens Advocates secretary-general Wilbert Ndiweni said there must be no condition for those in the diaspora to vote because it is their constitutional right to be allowed to vote.

Former Deputy Minister Says Zimbabwe Could Be PARADISE If Sanctions Were To Be Removed

Zimbabwe’s former Deputy Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Obert_Gutu">Obert Gutu</a>, has said South Africans, unlike Zimbabweans, would never demonise their country even in the face of unprecedented challenges.
The law expert said Zimbabweans need the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Patriotic_Bill">Patriotic Act</a> which will govern their conduct. He said:
<blockquote>
There are unprecedented power cuts in South Africa. But we don’t hear South Africans demonising their country. In Zimbabwe, the usual suspects climb on rooftops &amp; tell the whole world that their country is a failed state. Patriot Act is long overdue in Zimbabwe.
</blockquote>
His remarks come as the ZANU PF government is trying to come up with the Patriotic Bill that has been viewed as an attempt to weaken opposition political parties and make some politicians ineligible to contest elections.
The Patriotic Bill which was proposed in August 2020 prohibits citizens from conniving with “hostile” foreign governments to harm the country by campaigning for the imposition of sanctions or related actions or speeches.
Critics say the bill will be used as justification to violate human rights as it gives authorities permission to snoop into private communications between citizens and officials of foreign governments.
Early this year, the issue of the Bill was brought up for discussion in the UK Parliament and legislators raised displeasure.

"South Africans, Unlike Zimbabweans, Won't Demonise Their Country Despite Challenges"

Former MDC official, Obert Gutu has cited the “weakness” in the High Court ruling that declared the extension of former Chief Justice Luke Malaba a nullity.
Gutu said the Constitution Amendment (No.2) Act did not extend the term limit of judges of the superior courts, but merely extended the age limit by allowing them to continue occupying judicial office for another five years after attaining the age of 70. He said:

This, to me, is the major weakness of the High Court judgment that was handed down on Saturday, May 15, 2021. Because Constitution Amendment (No.2) Act does not extend the term limit of judges of the superior courts, there is, therefore, no need to go to a referendum.
I am absolutely convinced that the High Court judgment is challengeable in the Supreme Court with a significant degree of prospects of success of the appeal.
Clearly, the High Court totally misdirected itself by failing to distinguish between a term limit and an age limit.
</blockquote>
Meanwhile, another law expert, Alex Magaisa has observed that an appeal will complicate issues considering that all judges at the Supreme Court were cited in the proceedings, therefore, cannot preside over the case.
Magaisa is convinced that Malaba’s chapter is over adding that the learned judge should just enjoy retirement.

Zimbabwe’s former deputy Minister of Justice during the GNU era, Obert Gutu might have to resign from the ruling ZANU PF which he joined recently if he is appointed a member of the National Peace and Reconciliation Commission.
The former opposition MDC-T spokesman is one of the 29 candidates who have been shortlisted for interviews to fill in vacancies at the National Peace and Reconciliation Commission which will be held in public in Harare on the 14th of April this year.
His resignation will be in line with section 236 of the constitution which specifically states that members of commissions are to be apolitical.
It is possible though for a political party member to be appointed to the commission, but he or she must relinquish party membership within 30 days of such appointment.
The constitution also stipulates that members of the commission must be chosen for their integrity and their knowledge and understanding of, and experience in, mediation, conciliation, conflict prevention and management, post-conflict reconciliation or peace-building.

Obert Gutu Might Have To Resign From ZANU PF Soon

Former MDC T Vice President Obert Gutu has listed the following reasons which made <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/former-khupe-deputy-obert-gutu-joins-zanu-pf/">him go back to Zanu PF</a> which he said he was a member of during his college days. It is still not clear if Obert Gutu who was once a member of the MDC T and was never part of the MDC Alliance was referring to the now-defunct faction led by Khupe or the one currently led by Mwonzora. According to Gutu’s opinion piece published in The Sunday Mail:

<li>He says the MDC started as a strong movement but things changed….with time, the MDC’s ideological benchmark became blurred, conflicted and confusing.</li>
<li>He said the party became a reactionary western funded outfit – Gradually, the MDC became increasingly reactionary by playing to the whims and fantasies of its chief financiers, the white former commercial farmers as well as powerful Western countries who poured millions of dollars into the party both overtly and covertly.</li>
<li>He says the MDC scorns at Pan African ethos and nationalism: The nationalist and progressive social democracy ideology (of the MDC) was promptly replaced by a clearly reactionary and anti-nationalist sentiment that deliberately lampooned and poured scorn on anything associated with nationalist and Pan-African ethos</li>
<li>According to him, the MDC scorn at anything that doesn’t fall under his definition of nationalism and pan African ethos Nationalist of respecting liberation fighters and land redistribution: Pan African ethos include respect for the armed liberation struggle as well as the revolutionary thrust to empower historically disadvantaged indigenous people by giving them land that was previously owned and occupied by white commercial farmers  </li>
<li>The MDC was being controlled by outside forces: The MDC was virtually hijacked by powerful local white interests as well as the invisible, but clearly powerful hand of influential and rich Western nations, their main agenda of these alien interests was essential to reverse the gains of the land reform programme.</li>
<li>He said politics within the party became toxic: Intra-party fighting, violence, intolerance and factionalism became the norm within the MDC ranks as opposing factions fought for control of the levers of power within the party.</li>
<li>Values were eroded: It became a dog-eat-dog affair, the party’s founding values of peace, tolerance, empathy, solidarity and social democracy virtually completely eroded. </li>
<li>He didn’t like how people reacted against Khupe at Tsvangirai’s funeral: I wasn’t impressed by this thuggish and uncouth brand of politics and I promptly resigned from the engulfing madness. I was not going to be part and parcel of a violent mob that was only interested in grabbing power at whatever cost. </li>
<li>The MDC will not win any elections now: In its factions, the MDC is currently ill-disposed to win any national elections. The party has never been this divided in its entire history.</li>
<li>The MDC Is divided: The leadership in the factions are deeply divided and polarised The level of intra-party hatred is unprecedented. There’s an entrenched lack of party cohesion and there is too much negative energy.</li>

<li>The MDC did not call for the removal of sanctions: The lack of decisiveness in calling for the unconditional lifting of all forms of unilateral and punitive sanctions imposed against Zimbabwe made it impossible for me to continue associating with a party effectively propagates and lobbies for the continued imposition of these evil and satanic sanctions</li>
<li>The MDC is in self-destructive mode: The party has pressed the self-destruct button and at the harmonised elections in 2023, it will suffer a humiliating and crushing defeat at the hands of a resurgent Zanu PF.</li>
<li>Opposition Politics in Zimbabwe is toxic: Opposition politics in Zimbabwe right now is toxic, divisive and directionless.</li>

Obert Gutu who was Thokozani Khupe’s deputy in the now-defunct MDC T that was being led by the latter has scoffed at the chaotic MDC T Congress that took place at the HICC yesterday. The chaotic congress was marred with allegations of election fraud and violence. The interim MDC T leader Thokozani Khupe was escorted out and claimed Mwonzora embezzled <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/12/28/mwonzora-took-6-million-from-the-party-and-used-it-to-rig-elections-khupe-makes-a-u-turn/">money from the party and used it to rig</a> elections.
Gutu <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/01/19/good-riddance-mdc-t-youths-on-obert-gutus-resignation/">who left the party early this year due</a> to undisclosed reasons said he made the right decision and described the congress as a charade when he said:

I Made The Right Decision - Obert Gutu Mocks The MDC T Congress

Obert Gutu, the former vice president of the MDC party led by Thokozani Khupe, has expressed shame for having been involved in the calling for sanctions against Zimbabwe.
Posting on Twitter at the weekend, Gutu apologised for his role and said that he had let the country down.

<blockquote>I would like to sincerely apologize to all patriotic Zimbabweans for having played a part in the calling for the imposition of unilateral &amp; punitive sanctions against Zimbabwe by some powerful Western nations. I’m very sorry &amp; ashamed of having let down my beloved country.</blockquote>
Gutu quit politics earlier this year before a Supreme Court order reversed events that resulted in the split of MDC after the death of its leader Morgan Tsvangirai. He has not returned to active politics since. In the 2018 elections, he contested as MP for Harare East but lost to MDC Alliance’s Tendai Biti.
Under the current leadership of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Zanu-PF has continued to blame sanctions for the state of the country’s economy. For their part, the western governments of the US and the EU insist that sanctions have had an impact on the economy as they are targeted at individual Zanu-PF leaders.

"I'm Ashamed" - Obert Gutu Regrets Calling For Sanctions On Zimbabwe

Former vice president of the now-defunct MDC-T, Obert Gutu, said he will not accept nomination into Parliament by the Thokozani Khupe group on moral grounds.
Gutu was elected MDC-T vice president when the party held its inaugural congress in 2018 after a split from the MDC Alliance following the death of the original MDC-T’s founding president Morgan Tsvangirai.
The MDC-T, then led by Khupe, participated as a separate party in the 2018 harmonised elections but failed to win a single parliamentary or council seat.
However, following a Supreme Court ruling that Nelson Chamisa’s elevation to succeed Tsvangirai was null and void, Khupe has seized the MDC Alliance and fired 21 of its MPs so that she can get into Parliament alongside her friends.
For Gutu, Khupe’s behaviour is politically immoral and shows that she lacks political acumen. He said:
<blockquote>This is legally correct and bad politics, it is like telling someone who voted for Caps United that the result shows that he had voted for Dynamos.
Next time you still want to go and ask them for your votes. Will they trust you?
This is a completely zero-sum game and I urge all the concerned parties to reach a compromise.</blockquote>
Rashweat Mukundu, a political analyst, said Khupe and Douglas Mwonzora, the party’s interim secretary-general, were taking voters for granted.
Mukundu said by including herself on the list, Khupe had shown that the recalls were motivated by greed and not the interests of voters. Said Mukundu:
<blockquote>This is undermining the interests of voters because the people participated in an election where ballot papers were clearly marked and they knew the party and person they were voting for.</blockquote>

Gutu Rejects Nomination Into Parliament By Khupe 'On Moral Grounds'

Former MDC spokesperson, Obert Gutu has criticised the previously announced plan by local teachers to boycott the invigilation of June 2020 examinations.
Gutu said the move would affect thousands of learners suggesting that those who came up with the plan were acting like politicians. 
The June examinations started today with thousands of students taking part. Posting on Twitter, the former Minister of Justice (during the GNU era) said:
<blockquote>Been reading somewhere about certain teachers’ ‘unions’ lobbying for the boycotting of June 2020 Zimsec exams.
 What’s their agenda, really? So you don’t want 60 000 students to write their June exams? </blockquote>

Former MDC-T spokesperson Obert Gutu will not be re-joining the party regardless of the Supreme Court ruling which reinstated structures elected at the party congress in 2014.
Gutu was elected vice president of the faction led by Thokozani Khupe when it held its Congress in 2018 following a split within the MDC after its founding president Morgan Tsvangirai died in February of the same year.
Reports suggest that Gutu is unwilling to participate in the extraordinary congress because he is unhappy with getting a lower position after he funded most of the faction’s campaigns in the 2018 general elections.
A party insider told NewsDay that Gutu feels that he is being used. The publication cites its source as saying:
<blockquote>He does not want to continue to be used and he sees this Supreme Court ruling as an opportunity for some people to gain power while he is being relegated to a spokesperson.</blockquote>

Gutu Unwilling To Be 'Used' By Khupe's Faction

Former MDC spokesperson Obert Gutu says he will not be returning to active politics any time soon as he is intent on practising law and pursuing his private business interests.
Gutu’s remarks come after the Supreme Court recently nullified elective congresses held by MDC-T and MDC Alliance in 2018 and 2019, respectively.
The court ordered the party to revert to its 2014 structures and that Thokozani Khupe assumes the party presidency on an interim basis pending the holding of an extraordinary congress in three months.
In a statement on Friday, Gutu said he is convinced that he has got what it takes to contest for the party’s Presidency if he wanted to. The statement read partly:
<blockquote>For purely personal and private reasons, I will not be offering my candidature for the office of President although I am absolutely convinced that I have got what it takes to contest for the party’s Presidency if I wanted to.
I shall also not continue to occupy the position of National Spokesperson /Secretary for Information &amp; Publicity, again, for purely private and personal reasons. Going forward, I am not going to be involved in any political party politics.
I will remain an independent activist and analyst in addition to, of course, practising law and pursuing other private business interests.</blockquote>
Gutu followed Khupe when she left the MDC soon after the death of founding president Morgan Tsvangirai in February 2018.
He was elected MDC-T vice president, deputising Khupe when the faction held its congress at Stanley Square, Bulawayo, in April 2018.
He resigned from his position a few months ago citing “personal and private reasons”

Obert Gutu Says He Has 'What It Takes' To Become MDC President

Former MDC-T vice president <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Obert_Gutu" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Obert Gutu</a> said that he is no longer associated with the<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Political_Actors_Dialogue" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> Political Actors Dialogue Platform (POLAD)</a> following his resignation from his party role.
Gutu stepped away from the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Thokozani_Khupe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Thokozani Khupe</a>-led party citing “personal and private” reasons. Writing on microblogging site Twitter, he said:
<blockquote>There is some confusion regarding my continued membership of Polad. I would like to put the record straight that I am no longer a member of Polad. Accordingly, I am not associated with Polad in any manner of form. Kindly be advised accordingly.
I resigned from the MDC-T under whose umbrella I was a deployee in Polad. After resigning from the MDC-T, I ceased to be a Polad member.</blockquote>
POLAD is a brainchild of President Emmerson Mnangagwa which includes about a dozen-and-a-half losing presidential candidates in the 2018 elections.
The body has often been criticised for its penchant for opulence and arrogance while it represents no constituency in the country’s body politic.

Khupe's Former Deputy Dissociates Himself From POLAD

The MDC-T President, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Thokozani_Khupe">Thokozani Khupe</a>,  was reportedly shocked and saddened by the party’s former Vice President <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/01/18/obert-gutu-resigns-from-thokozani-khupes-party-with-immediate-effect/">Obert Gutu’s resignation yesterday</a>, New Zimbabwe reports.
Khupe’s reaction was communicated by the party’s spokesperson Khaliphani Phugeni to New Zimbabwe. Khupe reportedly said:
<blockquote>I received with shock and sadness the resignation of my Vice President. Over the years, he has been my greatest support both personally and politically. I will surely miss him.
I do appreciate that he needs to concentrate on his personal and business interests. I do hope, however, that l and the party can continue to rely on his political and strategic advice. I wish him well in his future endeavours.</blockquote>

Khupe Shocked And Saddened By Gutu's Resignation

MDC-T vice president <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Obert_Gutu" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Obert Gutu</a> expressed anger over President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s reneging on an agreement he made with members of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Political_Actors_Dialogue" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD)</a> to allow them to debate proposals in the Constitutional Amendment Bill before it was gazetted.
Gutu told NewsDay that the government missed a golden opportunity to show that POLAD is a serious platform for dialogue. He said:
<blockquote>It is very unfortunate that we lost a brilliant opportunity to show that Polad is a serious dialoguing platform. We are not happy.
Our question is why not give us an opportunity to ventilate this issue? If Polad is going to be an effective dialoguing platform, those in authority should take it seriously.
It would have been progressive to show the right degree of seriousness by giving us an opportunity to discuss the amendments.</blockquote>
Cabinet has already gazetted the controversial Constitutional Amendment Bill, with Justice Minister <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Ziyambi_Ziyambi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Ziyambi Ziyambi</a> reminding POLAD members that the negotiating platform is not an arm of the government, therefore, did not deserve to be consulted.
POLAD was launched on 17 May 2019 by Mnangagwa and is made up of about 19 opposition politicians who participated in the July 2018 presidential election.

Writing on microblogging site Twitter, Majongwe told Gutu to join ZANU PF where they will readily welcome him. Said Majongwe:

Gutu Promises To Clobber 'Pathetic' Chamisa-led MDC

MDC-T vice president Obert Gutu has threatened to go into exile if MDC president Nelson Chamisa ever becomes the president of Zimbabwe.
Gutu is said to be a very bitter man since the acrimonious split of the party that was led by the late Morgan Tsvangirai soon after his death in 2018.
Gutu followed Khupe to form a splinter group that failed to win a single contested parliamentary or council seat in the 2018 elections. He is quoted as saying:
<blockquote>I’m a principled and self-respecting professional and politician and I will never, ever sacrifice my beliefs and principles for hollow populism, fakeness, chicanery, tomfoolery, buffoonery, wanton violence and misguided ambition clothed with rampant corruption.
I can bet you my bottom RTGS dollar that in the very unlikely event that these charlatans manage to cheat their way to State House at No.1 Chancellor Avenue in Harare, I will immediately relocate and go to live outside Zimbabwe. I just can’t stand them.
I have got nothing but utter contempt for their emptiness, fakeness, lack of vision, lack of mission, greed, malice, violence and corruption.

Khupe's VP To Forsake Zim If Chamisa Becomes President

A Harare lawyer and politician, Obert Gutu say that crooks who masquerade as prophets are abusing the constitutional provisions that guarantee freedom of worship. He said that churches need to be regulated.
Gutu’s sentiments come as there have been scandals associated with eminent local prophets who have assembled Megachurches. The scandals range from rape, extortion, mine and farm wrangles among others.
In an interview with Daily News, Gutu said:
<blockquote>Section 60 of the Constitution guarantees freedom of conscience by stating that every person has the freedom to propagate and give expression to their thought, opinion, religion or belief — whether in public or in private, and whether alone or together with others.
It would appear that this fundamental human right and liberty has been routinely abused by criminals masquerading as genuine pastors and prophets.
The fact of the matter is that millions of unsuspecting and gullible people are being hoodwinked and swindled by these latter-day ‘prophets’ and crooks.
Zimbabweans should be on the lookout for these crooks who masquerade as ‘prophets’ when in actual fact they are philanderers, murderers, pathological liars and in some cases, serial rapists.
I strongly advocate for the regularisation of churches in tandem with the provisions of the supreme law of the land in order to protect innocent Zimbabweans from these marauding crooks and criminals.</blockquote>

Prominent Harare Lawyer Says Churches Should Be Regulated

MDC-T Vice President Obert Gutu has made a veiled dig at other opposition parties for castigating statements released by the Southern African Development (SADC) and the African Union (AU) supporting the government of Zimbabwe over the brutal crackdown on protestors and calling for the removal of sanctions. Said Gutu:
<blockquote>You may shout at and insult SADC and the AU all you want but the fact is puppets have got absolutely no traction whether it’s within Africa or beyond. Puppets never last the distance, do they? Do you remember a puppet called Jonas Savimbi of Angola?</blockquote>
Namibian President and Chairperson of SADC, Hage Geinghob issued a statement during the recent AU Summit held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He said that NGOs and some internal groups wanted to destabilise the country with the support of external forces.
He added that SADC condemns in the strongest terms the violent demonstrations which occurred in the country in January. He reiterated his view that the protests were meant to destabilise the country.

Gutu Calls MDC Alliance Puppets With No Traction With SADC, AU

In an interview with NewZimbabwe.com, Thokozani Khupe’s deputy Obert Gutu said they will be holding their own 19th anniversary celebrations.
He said they were not invited to the Nelson Chamisa celebrations. Gutu also took a swipe at the Chamisa led MDC-T faction. Said Gutu:

Khupe's MDC-T To Hold Own 19th Anniversary Celebrations

Obert Gutu, the deputy president for Thokozani Khupe’s breakaway MDC-T has ruled out reunification with Nelson Chamisa’s MDC-T. Gutu claimed that Chamisa has been sending highly placed envoy trying to reunite the two factions. In an interview, Gutu said,
<blockquote>Yes, they have used some highly-placed emissaries to get in touch with us seeking a ‘reunification’. What we know for certain is that our former colleagues cannot be trusted. In the past, they have exhibited shocking levels of intolerance, hatred, malice and vindictiveness. We have got absolutely no appetite to re-unite with people who are neither honest nor sincere. We are not desperate at all.
…There’s a snowball’s chance in hell of us reuniting with people who cannot be trusted. In fact, it is only when human life is found to exist on planet Jupiter that we will reunite with those people. As long as our erstwhile colleagues are not entirely forthright and honest, we have got no appetite to even consider a reconciliation where there is clear and unequivocal evidence that the prospects of a reconciliation are close to zero.</blockquote>

Khupe's MDC-T Rules Out Reunification, Say Chamisa Has Been Sending Emissaries

In a statement, MDC-T Deputy National Chairperson Morgen Komichi announced that the party’s National Council, the Supreme-decision-making body in between Congresses met today and resolved to fire Thokozani Khupe, Obert Gutu and Abednico Bhebhe.
Komichi said the national council also accepted Lovemore Moyo’s resignation. Said Komichi:
<blockquote>On VP Khupe, the national council noted the efforts for engagement made by the party President and the fact that VP Khupe remained stubborn, obdurate, intransigent and spurned all party efforts to address her grievances as she continued to hold illegal meetings and partake in unconstitutional activities, putting the party into disrepute and undermining the constitutional organs of the party. The national council therefore resolved, by more than the mandatory two thirds of the vote that VP Khupe be removed from the party in terms of the party constitution.
On National Chairperson Lovemore Moyo, the national council formally accepted the resignation from the party by the national chairman Mr Lovemore Ndodana Moyo which he has tendered to the leadership. The council wished him well in all his future endeavors.
On organizing secretary Hon. Abednigo Bhebhe, the national council by the more than the mandatory two thirds of the vote resolved to remove him from the party on allegations of his unconstitutional behavior and for continuously putting the party into disrepute.
On suspended party spokesperson Mr. Obert Chaurura Gutu, the national council resolved by a unanimous vote to expel suspended party spokesperson Mr Obert Chaurura Gutu.
The national council further resolved that those leaders that have ceased to be members of the party but who are in Parliament, in particular VP Khupe and Organizing Secretary Abednigo Bhebhe, be recalled with immediate effect.
The party further resolved to communicate these latest developments in the party to all stakeholders including, but not limited to, the government of Zimbabwe, the parliament of Zimbabwe, civic society, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, the diplomatic community and all party organs and structures.</blockquote>

Khupe And Allies Fired From MDC-T

In an interview with The Herald’s Political Editor Tichaona Zindoga (TZ) Obert Gutu (OG) said he has not received any letter of suspension hence he is still the MDC-T spokesperson.

He also said his suspension was not done according to the provisions of Article 5.11 as read with Article 12.1 of the MDC constitution. Below is an excerpt of the interview:
<blockquote>TZ: First of all what is Obert Gutu’s status in the MDC-T party and Alliance?
OG: Officially, I am the MDC-T national spokesperson. My purported suspension from office is null and void in that it dismally failed to comply with the provisions of Article 5.11 as read with Article 12.1 of the MDC constitution. My purported suspension is laughable, baseless, frivolous and vexatious.
Even to this very day, I still haven’t been served with a letter of suspension. Whoever is going to be foolish enough to author such a baseless and puerile letter will have to face the legal consequences of their stupidity and idiocy.
TZ: Can you explain what the constitutional provisions are and whether you have been served with a letter?
OG: Article 5.11 of the MDC constitution states that the National Council will have to vote by a two thirds majority if they wanted to take action against me regarding my continued membership of the party. I should also have been notified, in writing, of the reasons for my suspension.
In addition, I should have been afforded the opportunity to make representations in writing or in person to the National Council. All this was never complied with. It was more of a kangaroo court session. Article 12.1 of the MDC constitution stipulates that no disciplinary proceedings against any member of the National Standing Committee shall be commenced without the approval of a two thirds majority of the National Council.
The National Council never voted to take disciplinary measures against me. This is a complete dog’s breakfast. The kangaroo court session that purportedly suspended me should be dismissed with the utter contempt and disdain that it rightfully deserves.</blockquote>

Obert Gutu Resists Suspension From MDC-T

Minister of Home Affairs and Culture Obert Mpofu recently told the Senate that the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) was no longer accountable to anyone under the tenure of former President Robert Mugabe. Mpofu said the new administration had closed off all the loopholes after realising that the ZRP was mainly interested in traffic duties were they were able to benefit. Said Mpofu,
<blockquote>The major problem is that the policemen were now doing what they wanted, not what the community wanted. No one could say anything to them..When you tell them not to do some things, they would not listen to you and they would do what they thought was right.
They were no longer doing what they were trained to do and they were competing on who is going to the roadblocks because there were benefits they were getting from that. We have closed all those loopholes.</blockquote>
The roadblocks had virtually disappeared after the fall of former president Robert Mugabe in November 2017. ZRP Had Become A Rogue Force But We Have Closed All Loopholes: Obert Mpofu

MDC-T national spokesperson Obert Gutu has claimed that he received death threats from youth members from his own party.
He made the claims after an interview on Monday evening on Ruvheneko Parirenyatwa’s Election Debate show which was broadcast on Capitalk FM and Star FM. He said MDC-T should accept that there are people that mastermind violence from within and not blame the Zanu-PF government or the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) for infiltrating and causing chaos. Said Gutu:
<blockquote>Lets bite the bullet and agree that among us we have elements who propagate violence. I personally have been a victim of threats.
