The Ministry of Health and Child Care, with support from the World Health Organisation, its partners and the UK’s Fleming Fund, has introduced an antimicrobial resistance (AMR) module in the nursing school curriculum for registered general nurses, primary care nurses, and midwifery, beginning in 2024, reported <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/new-module-added-to-nursing-curriculum/">The Herald</a>.
As of November 2023, seven experts had trained a total of 106 registered nurses, primary care nurses, and midwifery educators from the country’s northern and southern regions on topics such as AMR in HIV, AMR in malaria, AMR in fungal, AMR in bacteria, sample collection, the role of nurses in the fight against AMR, the structure of bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and antimicrobial stewardship.
The acting WHO representative in Zimbabwe, Professor Jean-Marie Dangou, said WHO supported the training of 106 nursing educators on effectively delivering the new AMR module. He said:

Recognising the crucial role of nurses in the fight against AMR, WHO actively supported this integration by training 106 nursing educators on effectively delivering the new AMR module. This proactive approach equips educators with the necessary skills and knowledge to confidently guide students through the intricacies of AMR prevention and control…
The WHO also helped to mobilise resources for Zimbabwe’s AMR program. The UK government provided financial assistance to the Republic of Zimbabwe through the Fleming Fund and the AMR Multi Partners Trust Fund.

According to <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/drugresistance/about/how-resistance-happens.html#:~:text=Antimicrobial%20resistance%20happens%20when%20germs,and%20sometimes%20impossible%2C%20to%20treat.">Centres for Disease Control and Prevention</a>, antimicrobial resistance happens when germs like bacteria and fungi develop the ability to defeat the drugs designed to kill them. Resistant infections can be difficult, and sometimes impossible, to treat.
Antimicrobial resistance is a naturally occurring process, but AMR increases in antimicrobial resistance are driven by a combination of germs exposed to antibiotics and antifungals, and the spread of those germs and their resistance mechanisms.
AMR does not mean that the body is resistant to antibiotics or antifungals. It means the bacteria or fungi causing the infection are resistant to the antibiotic or antifungal treatment.

Zimbabwe Adds Antimicrobial Resistance Module To Nursing Curriculum

A Zimbabwean woman, Rutendo Zvidza, of Nkulumane suburb, Bulawayo, has opened another nursing training school in Namibia, in a city called Rundu.
Rundu is the capital of the Kavango region in north-eastern Namibia and Namibia’s second largest city.
Zvidza moved to Namibia in 2013 to work as a nurse and established her first nursing training school in Windhoek, Namibia’s capital.
Her nursing school, PMT Healthcare Institute in Windhoek, accepted its first class of students in January 2021 for a Diploma in Nursing Science and Midwifery. The students are expected to graduate early next year.
Zvidza told <a href="https://cite.org.zw/zim-nurse-opens-another-training-school-in-namibia/">CITE in an interview</a> that the new centre in Rundu will start classes in March 2023. She said:

PMT Health Care Institute has expanded to another town, Rundu, which is about 800km away from Windhoek. The centre will start classes next year in March 2023. Of late, we were busy with renovations and logistics of opening the school, which has been done. An inspection of the school has also been done.

Zvidza said the training centre will offer a two-year diploma programme in Enrolled Nursing in Midwifery Science. She said:

On completion, nursing recruits are referred to as enrolled nurses. These are the nurses who will contribute to the improvement of Namibia’s and the world’s healthcare delivery systems.

I am delighted that PMT Health Institute is expanding as a school and this is our second branch for the diploma in Enrolled Nursing in Midwifery Science.

… the goal of the training centre is to produce and groom nurses who are highly competent and professional in order to positively impact the hearts of all Namibians and everyone.
</blockquote>
Zvidza also revealed that PMT Health Care Institution has a sister school, Welwitchia Health Training Centre, which has university status.
She gave God credit for all her achievements to date, saying “prayer can unlock many doors.” Said Zvidza:

All this can only be through Christ that we worship. One thing for sure that I can tell you is I have managed to do this because of prayer.
I grew up in a family that was not well up, where people never thought someone like me could do something like this in life or be in a position to touch the world the way I’m doing now but by the grace of God, I never stopped praying.
I never stopped kneeling and praying to God. For real I can say that I’m an example of the wonders that God can do.
I’m still trying, little by little, to learn from the gurus who have done these things before and to follow in their footsteps.
So, at the end of the day, by grooming the best nurses, we can bring positivity to the world.
