Former Lagos governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu (70), has won a tight race to succeed Muhammadu Buhari as the next president of Nigeria.
Mahmood Yakubu, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), announced early on Wednesday that Tinubu “… is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected”.
<a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/3/1/bola-tinubu-wins-controversial-nigerian-presidential-election">Al Jazeera</a> reported that Tinubu polled 8.8 million votes to defeat former associate-turned-foe Atiku Abubakar and surprise frontrunner Peter Obi, who scored 6.9 million and 6.1 million, respectively.
However, three opposition parties have since called for a cancellation of what they called a “sham” of an election.
Tinubu represented the ruling Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar (76), stood for the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while Peter Obi (61) represented the Labour Party.
Addressing supporters soon after his victory was confirmed, Tinubu said:

This is a serious mandate – I hereby accept it. To serve you… To work with you and make Nigeria great.
I appeal to my fellow contestants to let us team together. It is the only nation we have. It is one country that we must build together.
</blockquote>
Tinubu is a former two-term governor of Lagos and is considered the most influential political godfather in current Nigerian history.
He is set to become Nigeria’s fifth president since the return of democracy in 1999.
Earlier on Tuesday, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and African Democratic Congress (CDC) called for the cancellation of the election results.
The losing parties alleged the poll was a “sham” and merely “vote allocation and not collation”.

Ruling Party Candidate, Bola Tinubu, Wins Disputed Nigerian Presidential Election

The Nigerian Labour Party (LP) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to completely cancel the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2023/02/26/nigerian-election-2023-commission-speaks-on-glitches-on-results-viewing-portal/">entire election</a> and make plans for another election.
The Labour Party says it has lost confidence in the collation of the results of the presidential election. Said the party:

We call on INEC to suspend further announcement of results and follow its own guidelines or completely cancel the entire election and make plans for another election. 
</blockquote>
Nigerians went to the polls on Saturday, with an unprecedented youth turnout expected against a backdrop of widespread insecurity and economic hardship.
After 24 years of uninterrupted democracy since ending military dictatorship in 1999, Africa’s most populous nation and the largest economy is conducting its seventh election.
Nigeria is at a pivotal juncture amid record unemployment and inflation, a massive debt burden, fuel shortages, worsening security conditions, endemic corruption and crumbling public services.
Hours before voting began, images showing that the Labour Party was missing from some senate and house of representatives ballot papers were widely shared on social media.
Supporters of the party alleged that there was a deliberate plot to prevent them from voting for the party.
The party’s official handle tweeted “Labour Party Logo missing in some ballot papers” accompanied by an amateur video showing an election official flipping through the pages of a ballot booklet. A voice is heard saying: “There is no Labour Party on the senatorial [ballot paper] here in Lagos. The presidential [ballot paper] has it.”

Labour Party supporters around the country also used Twitter and Facebook to share photos and videos from their polling units reporting the absence of the logo on parliamentary ballot papers.
Allegations that Nigeria’s INEC was biased for deliberately leaving out the party began to spread. 
  
Others posted that they had been given ballot papers with the logo of the party but without the name of the party, saying that Inec purposely omitted the party’s name to confuse voters.
But the official logo of the Labour Party does not carry the name of the party, only its slogan -“Forward Ever“. Inec prints ballot papers with official logos sent in by the party.
Senior Inec official Zainab Aminu Abubakar told <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-64778054">the BBC</a> that the Labour Party was indeed missing from some parliamentary ballot papers. But she said that is because the party did not submit the names of its candidates for these constituencies.
She said the party said it had obtained a court order, compelling it to include Labour Party candidates on the ballot papers for parliamentary elections.
Inec then asked to see the court order but received no official reply before election day. Ms Abubakar said if the party had provided the court judgement even a day before, the parliamentary election for the constituencies affected could have been arranged for a later date.
A statement released by the Labour Party Ondo state secretary also said the high court in Abuja had ordered INEC to accept the names of the party’s candidates for parliamentary elections in some states but the commission deliberately left them out. It said this was a move to disenfranchise voters.
It is not clear how many parliamentary constituencies have been affected.

Nigerian Election 2023: Labour Party Calls For Another Election

The Nigerian <a href="https://www.inecnigeria.org/">Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)</a> has said glitches on its Results Viewing Portal (IREV) are technical in nature. In a statement seen by Pindula News, INEC assured stakeholders that the IReV remains well-secured. Reads the statement:

<h2>CHALLENGES EXPERIENCED WITH THE INEC RESULTS VIEWING PORTAL (IReV)</h2>
The Commission is aware of challenges with the INEC Results Viewing Portal (IReV). Unlike in off-season elections where the portal was used, it has been relatively slow and unsteady. The Commission regrets this setback, especially because of the importance of IReV in our results management process.
The problem is totally due to technical hitches related to scaling up the IReV from a platform for managing off-season, State elections, to one for managing nationwide general elections. It is indeed not unusual for glitches to occur and be corrected in such situations.
Consequently, the Commission wishes to assure Nigerians that the challenges are not due to any intrusion or sabotage of our systems, and that the IReV remains well-secured.
Our technical team is working assiduously to solve all the outstanding problems, and users of the IReV would have noticed improvements since last night.
We also wish to assure Nigerians that results from the Polling Unitcopies of which were issued to political parties, are safe on both the BVAS and the IReV portal. These results cannot be tampered with and any discrepancy between them and the physical results used in collation will be thoroughly investigated and remediated, in line with Section 65 of the Electoral Act 2022.
While we fully appreciate the concerns of the public on this situation and welcome various suggestions that we have received from concerned Nigerians, it is important to avoid statements and actions that can heat up the polity at this time or promote disaffection towards the Commission.
We take full responsibility for the problems and regret the distress that they have caused the candidates, political parties and the electorate.
