The Government has engaged Lupane State University (LSU) to conduct research that will establish why some schools record zero percent pass rates.
Over the years, a number of schools across the country have been recording zero percent pass rates in public examinations.
Responding to questions in the Senate Question and Answer session last Thursday, Primary and Secondary Education Deputy Minister Edgar Moyo said:
<blockquote>
The issue of zero percent pass rates in our schools is very much concerning. There are a number of variables.
We have carried out some research and investigations as to why there is that prevalence. The question really says, what are we doing about it?
We are currently in partnership with LSU, with their Department of Education.
They have conducted research on the possible reasons and solutions to address that problem.
Some of the problems are beyond the capacity of schools to address and require a national effort especially when we look at the issue of infrastructure, resources at their disposal, and human resources, teachers for example.
Some of the schools have as few as three to four teachers running nine classes from Early Childhood Development (ECD) to Grade Seven. Then you have composite classes to that situation.
Honestly, the quality of education in that environment is seriously compromised. So, we need to have viable schools.
What do we mean by viable schools? We need schools with sufficient enrolments so as to attract a good number of teachers to teach each class of their own, but that is not happening because some schools have such low enrolments as 30 to 35 and so forth, particularly in the resettlement areas.
</blockquote>
Moyo said the Government was working with development partners to ensure that schools have the resources. He said:
<blockquote>
The schools are also receiving grants from our partners which we call School Improvement Grants (SIG) so that resources like books and other requisite equipment are procured for the benefit of those children.
Now, if a school is not viable as already illustrated, it means that the school is not registered and it cannot have a substantive head and we have a teacher-in-charge of that particular school.
The quality of education there becomes a problem.
We are trying to build infrastructure, register those schools, and attract sufficient teachers and students so that we can address the issue of zero percent pass rate.
</blockquote>
Here are several things that parents and guardians can do to help ensure their child’s success in school:
<ul>
<li>Help your child develop an interest and curiosity in the subjects they are studying by exposing them to different books, educational games, and field trips.</li>
<li>Set aside time for homework, studying, and other extracurricular activities.</li>
<li>Communicate regularly with your child’s teachers so that you stay informed about their progress and any areas where they may be struggling.</li>
<li>Create a quiet, distraction-free environment where your child can concentrate on their studies.</li>
<li>Keep track of your child’s grades and assignments to make sure they are staying on track.</li>

Lupane State University Probes 0% Pass Rates In Schools

Lupane State University (LSU) lecturers protested against non-payment of salaries resulting in the delay in releasing examination results.
LSU communication and marketing director Mr Zwelithini Dlamini told the Chronicle that the issue has been rectified adding that results are expected next week. He said:
<blockquote>As you might be aware parallel and block students have separate contracts and therefore the lecturers were withholding certain information related to results as a way of pushing for their payment. I’m advised that after students realised that results had been processed for the conventional group, those with outstanding fees paid up and the university in turn processed the payment to the lecturers last Friday.</blockquote>
Some students told the Chronicle that the delay in the release of results affects those who would have failed some courses and would need to retake them.
Government pays lecturers’ salaries for conventional classes but wages for parallel programmes tutors are paid by universities from money paid by the students.

Lecturers' Salary Strike Delays Students' Results

50 students were reportedly expelled from Lupane State University’s students’ residence after they smuggled in stoves to prepare their own meals.
The students complained that the quality of the food served at the dining halls was substandard.
A student who spoke to CITE on condition of anonymity had this to say:
<blockquote>The problem started early this year when the DH shut down for almost a week because the food was too expensive and it was horrible.
People complained for quite some time yet there was still no change has been effectively done. So, the students decided to make their lives easier by bringing stoves to the hostel and making meals for themselves.
They decided to do a search and seize operation. Those who were found with stoves were made to write reports.
The dean of students instead of addressing the root cause of the problem has decided to expel the students from the hostels, they have already been served with letters informing them of the matter.</blockquote>
However, LSU director of marketing and communication Zwelithini Dlamini told CITE that 
the University’s policy is that students are not allowed to bring in stoves into the school premises. He said:
<blockquote>Under any circumstances, students are not allowed to bring in stoves into the school premises because of power supply issues at the institution.
The only time we had such a problem with the students was early this year. As the administration, we worked on improving the menu for the students.</blockquote>

50 Students Expelled From University Residence For Smuggling In Stoves

A prominent Bulawayo based academic at the Lupane State Univerisity and Premier Soccer League commissioner, Ndabezinhle Ncube has died. He allegedly committed suicide at his home in Manningdale suburb in Bulawayo on Friday 3 May.
Said Bulawayo provincial acting police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube:
<blockquote>I can confirm that we are investigating a case of sudden death, where a man is suspected to have committed suicide at his home in Bulawayo. No foul play is suspected.</blockquote>
Zifa board member and Referees Committee chairman Mr Bryton Malandule commented:
<blockquote>As a referee and a fellow commissioner his death shocked us, I just heard about his death from colleagues.
His death comes as an extreme shock to us because we did not hear of his illness. As the chairman of the referees’ committee we are very shocked and we have lost a big asset in Dr Ncube.
He was one of our long-serving commissioners and he was not only a commissioner but our instructor.
In terms of instructing he was also responsible for teaching before instructing commissioners.</blockquote>

Lupane State University Director & PSL Commissioner Commits Suicide

Six students from Lupane State University (LSU) were on Monday arrested in violent protests over access to lecture rooms at their Bulawayo campus.
The arrests were confirmed by Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube. Said Ncube:
<blockquote>I can confirm that we attended Lupane State University disturbances and six people were arrested for disorderly behaviour.</blockquote>
The students raised a number of issues in the lead-up to the protests. According to LSU spokesperson Zwelithini Dlamini, students expressed concerns over issues to do with WiFi accessibility and registration.

6 LSU Students Arrested Over Demo

Six Lupane State University (LSU) students were yesterday arrested during a demonstration in Bulawayo.
The students were protesting against poor service and being excluded from lessons after failing to raise registration fees. Bulawayo deputy police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube said the arrested students will appear in court soon. He said the students were arrested for disorderly conduct.
Responding to the incident, Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Minister Professor Amon Murwira urged university students struggling to pay fees to apply for education loans as non-payment of fees can ruin the higher and tertiary education sector. He said his Ministry is finalising a $8 million risk fund loan facility which was included in the national budget. Last week LSU students were barred from attending lectures and accessing university infrastructure if they had not paid $350 registration fees.

Lupane State University Students Arrested For Staging Demonstration

Students at Lupane State University (LSU) on Tuesday staged a peaceful demonstration at the university’s campus over the decision made by the authorities to bar those who have not paid $350 registration fees from lectures.
Silas Makusha, the LSU students’ representative council president had this to say:
<blockquote>Barring students from attending lectures and accessing the university’s premises is what sparked the protest. As we speak no one is attending lectures.
We are living in crowded rooms. A room which is supposed to be used by two students is now accommodating eight students. They are also providing us with poor quality food.
Instead of barring students who have not registered from attending lectures they should just withhold their results. They should be flexible to us as we are flexible to them.</blockquote>

Lupane State University Students Stage Demo On Campus

Lupane State University (LSU) has introduced a degree in Kalanga and Community Studies as part of efforts to promote indigenous languages in the country.
In an interview, the university’s director of marketing and public relations Mr Zwelithini Dlamini said the programme was introduced in response to public demand. Said Dlamini:
<blockquote>The communities asked us to provide degrees in indigenous languages including Kalanga to complement our national constitution since it now recognises all the community languages that are spoken in the country, We are introducing this programme aiming to produce best communication skills within the country and the training will be for four years.</blockquote>

Lupane State University Offers Kalanga and Community Studies Degree

President Robert Mugabe has lifted the recruitment freeze on lecturers for all programmes that have been approved by the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (ZIMCHE). 
This directive will apply to Lupane State University (LSU) with $3,9 million being released towards the development of the institution. Said Mugabe:
<blockquote>My Government, in consultation with the Vice Chancellor (Professor Pardon Kuipa) and Reserve Bank Governor (Dr John Mangudya) will immediately release funding to complete the male hostel, solar heating system for student hostels and two staff flatlets. My Government will, with immediate effect, lift recruitment freeze on academic staff for all programmes that have already been approved by ZIMCHE. In monetary terms, these measures have been estimated to amount to about $3,9 million, which I have directed to be released immediately.</blockquote>

Mugabe lifts recruitment freeze on lecturers

In direct defiance of a Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development directive, Lupane State University (LSU) has barred students with outstanding fees from writing their exams. The school is also reportedly not accepting the transfer of electronic funds through the Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) system. The Ministry has directed all state tertiary institutions to allow all students to write their exams. <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/news/2017/05/23/govt-orders-colleges-not-bar-students-learning-fees/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">For those students who have outstanding school fees, the Ministry directed the institutions to withhold results instead.</a>
However, LSU spokesperson Mr. Zwelithini Dlami said that the university was only barring students who were not registered, and confirmed that the university was not accepting RTGS. Said Dhlamini:
<blockquote>Everyone who registered was accepted and are writing their examinations including some who have challenges with finances but have put down something and negotiated for payment plans. As far as I know even the Vice Chancellor has agreed that those who have made down payments should be allowed to write their examinations</blockquote>

Lupane State Uni defies govt, bars students with outstanding fees from writing exams

Speaking at the university’s seventh graduation ceremony on Friday, vice-chancellor, Pardon Kuipa said to date, 145 students and 95 staff members have been moved to Lupane despite the challenges. He also revealed that <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Lupane_State_University">Lupane State University</a> (LSU) staff members have been forced to share hostels with students as a result of the lack of housing.
He said,
<blockquote>We have moved the agriculture, geography and population departments, including teaching and support staff,” he said. We are, however, outsourcing food and other service, as our kitchen is not yet complete. It is about 80% complete. We have also asked our staff to share hostels with students.</blockquote>
President <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Robert_Mugabe">Robert Mugabe</a> capped 642 graduands at the institution.
