ZANU PF has won the Gutu West Constituency by-election, with their candidate <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/John_Paradza/">John Paradza</a> emerging as the winner. Five contestants participated in the race. Paradza received 12,147 votes, defeating the other candidates. Martin Sebastian Mudzingwa, an independent candidate, received 1,775 votes, Ephraim Morudu from Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) received 1,258 votes, and Robson Kurwa from the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) received 138 votes. There were 132 spoilt papers.
The by-election was a result of the death of <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Christopher_Mutonhori_Rwodzi/">Christopher Mutonhori Rwodzi</a>, the husband of Tourism Minister <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Barbara_Rwodzi/">Barbara Rwodzi</a>, just before the harmonised elections on August 23, 2023. Christopher Rwodzi, who defied ZANU PF orders and resolved to contest as an independent candidate, died in an accident.
There was only one candidate, Paradza, who agreed to the election results and signed the polling station returns (V11 forms). The others had complaints about how the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) conducted the elections. However, both ZEC and ZANU PF signed the V11 forms, indicating their agreement with the results.
In the lead-up to the by-elections in the Gutu West constituency, there were <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/11/07/zimrights-concerned-over-rise-in-cases-of-political-violence-in-gutu-west/">reports of politically motivated violence</a> and voter intimidation allegedly carried out by ZANU PF Forever Associates Zimbabwe (FAZ) activists. For example, a ZANU-PF member named Rashiel Bere, who is also part of the FAZ organisation, was accused of intimidating villagers and threatening to burn their houses if they voted for the opposition party.
In another incident, a member of the CCC was beaten by ZANU-PF supporters at a shopping centre in Gutu after being seen wearing a CCC T-shirt. The victim identified one of the assailants as the younger brother of ZANU-PF MP Candidate John Paradza, known as “Boss Para”.
These incidents confirm the findings of the ZimRights 2022 State of Peace Report, which highlighted that over 50% of Zimbabweans live in a fragile peace, fearing the elections.

ZANU PF Wins Gutu West Constituency By-election

ZANU PF deputy secretary for youth affairs <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/John_Paradza">John Paradza</a> says the opposition should not be allowed to hold meetings in Mashonaland East province.
<a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/2022/07/stop-ccc-meetings-zanu-pf/?dicbo=v2-16aeaa597398e64e189e93a48ff80710">NewsDay Zimbabwe</a> reports that Paradza made the remarks while addressing scores of youths at Rudhaka Stadium in Marondera at the weekend. Without mentioning the name of the opposition party, Paradza said:

As the youth league we are the vanguard of the party and, therefore, it is our mandate to defend the gains of our revolution. I was told during a briefing that there are certain areas in this province where the opposition is now trying to hold meetings, but we cannot allow that comrades.
As a leader, you must make sure that such meetings are not even given a chance and we have to keep in touch with our masses.
We are the people’s party and we are there for the people. In 2023, we are going to win resoundingly because we are always with the people. ZANU PF will forever rule this nation because we have a listening President who works tirelessly to forward the interests of the people; 2023 is a done deal.

Opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) secretary for rural mobilisation Happymore Chidziva rubbished Paradza’s utterances saying the party’s activities are going ahead as planned. He said:

CCC is not a banned organisation and John Paradza has no mandate to ban our activities. It is even not easy to ban what is within the citizens, this is a citizens’ movement that resides in the hearts of all citizens. He (Paradza) is a Zanu PF, not CCC member. We regulate ourselves; and he must regulate Zanu PF because that’s his party.

The province is regarded as a ZANU PF stronghold. 
CCC which is led by Nelson Chamisa, a former Minister of ICT during the Government of National Unity (GNU) is in charge of only two of the 23 constituencies in the province.

ZANU PF Youth League Mourns Minister Oliver Chidawu

ZANU PF deputy secretary for youth affairs, John Paradza, has warned ruling party youths against name-dropping but to respect the party’s first secretary President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Name-dropping is when an individual claims to be associated with a famous or powerful person in order to appear more important and special.
Addressing the ZANU PF Mashonaland West provincial inter-district meeting in Chinhoyi on Saturday, Paradza said:

Stop name-dropping and dragging President Mnangagwa into your selfish issues.
None among you has the power to visit the President to present your challenges without my knowledge as your leader.
</blockquote>
Paradza reminded ZANU PF youths at the meeting that Mnangagwa is the party’s sole presidential candidate for next year’s harmonised elections. He said:

We have one centre of power in ZANU PF and that is the President, and he deserves to be respected.
</blockquote>
Paradza revealed that some youths were destabilising the ruling party by threatening to suspend party officials claiming they had been sent by Mnangagwa. He added:

Some of us are being bought to de-campaign and destabilise sitting parliamentarians and this should be stopped as it has a negative impact on the 2023 result.
… Preach the good that President Mnangagwa is doing for the nation that include infrastructure development, devolution, the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme and sound economic reforms.
These should help mobilise voters for the party for the 2023 harmonised elections.

ZANU PF Youths Warned Against Name-dropping

President Emmerson Mnangagwa reportedly imposed Gutu West MP and Masvingo provincial youth chairman John Paradza as the ZANU PF Youth League deputy national chairperson.
Paradza was elected unchallenged at the just ended ZANU PF national youth conference.
Reports suggest that there was a push ahead of the conference to elect Mutare district coordinating committee secretary for youth affairs Danmore Mambondiyani to the post.
Paradza took over from Tendai Chirau, who has been acting youth secretary following the sacking of Gutu West MP Pupurai Togarepi.
A disgruntled ZANU PF youth league executive told The Standard that all provinces were whipped into supporting Paradza. aid the official:

All provinces were whipped into submission to support Paradza and he went uncontested in the elections.
There was some disgruntlement among the party leadership, but party leadership led by Mnangagwa wanted Paradza after Mnangagwa directed the party members to rally behind Paradza.
Mambondiyani wanted the deputy secretary for youth affairs position, but came third in his Manicaland province and could not compete for the top position despite spirited efforts to smuggle him to the top position.

The Standard also reported sources as saying that President Emmerson Mnangagwa will handpick his ally, deputy Sports minister Tino Machakaire as the substantive secretary for youth affairs.
