Two Zimbabwean citizens were among the victims of a vigilante attack in a crime-ridden township of Diepsloot, a suburb north of Johannesburg in South Africa.
Talent Moyo and his unidentified friend were on their way to a church service when they were murdered, according to Moyo’s family. Witnesses said the duo encountered a mob that believed they were criminals terrorising the area. The pair was bound, beaten, and burned to death while pleading for their lives. Moyo’s aunt shared the tragic details and mentioned plans to repatriate his body for burial in his rural hometown of Kezi. Moyo’s Aunt Mrs Sibonginkosi Banda said:

They encountered a mob that was meting justice on five suspected gang members that had been terrorizing the community. They were so much into church and from what we gather they were bound together with tyres and ropes, beaten and burnt to death while they pleaded for their lives.
</blockquote>
According to Mrs. Banda, Talent Moyo’s father identified him by his clothes and belongings, which included church attire and bibles. Plans are being made to confirm his identity through DNA tests so his body can be repatriated for burial in his rural hometown of Kezi. Mrs. Banda said Moyo was a young man who had plans to get married in December. 
South Africa is facing a rising murder rate, particularly in ungoverned suburbs like Diepsloot. This town, located north of Johannesburg and home to over 350,000 people, suffers from high rates of killings and rape. Authorities have been criticised for neglecting these areas. Police have initiated a murder investigation after finding the charred bodies of seven young men. Two burned bodies were reported initially, followed by the discovery of five more bodies in a nearby district of Diepsloot.
Police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo told AFP that police condemn vigilantism and stress that taking the law into one’s own hands is a serious criminal offence. Masondo added:

Preliminary investigation suggests that in both incidents, the victims were assaulted and burned by the mob.
</blockquote>
Diepsloot serves as a stark reminder of South Africa’s struggle with a high murder rate, averaging 68 murders per day in the second quarter of 2023.

A video circulating on social media depicts a heartwarming encounter between a South African motorist and a Zimbabwean street vendor in Johannesburg. The vendor, who carries her baby on her back while selling eggs and peanuts, received a generous gesture from the South African man. He purchased all of her merchandise valued at R300 and handed her R800, urging her to go home and rest.

One person was killed and 41 others were injured in an explosion that overturned vehicles and destroyed sections of Bree Street and Rissik Street in Johannesburg Central on Wednesday evening.
On Thursday morning, city officials were still battling to determine the cause of a destructive blast.
The company that runs a gas pipeline network in the city, Egoli Gas, issued a statement on Wednesday evening saying it hadn’t seen a pressure reduction and its network wasn’t compromised.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said that they received a report from the company. <a href="https://ewn.co.za/2023/07/20/cause-of-joburg-cbd-explosion-after-1-death-scores-of-casualties-undetermined">Said Lesufi</a>:

They only picked up a 100mm pipe that had some leak and have since repaired that particular part… It’s a gas leak but they say it’s minimal… we don’t want to jump to conclusions.
</blockquote>
Reports indicate that the acrid smell of gas still hung in the air hours after the explosion and several vehicles were still overturned while some were stuck between the cracks in the road.
The explosion cut off power to some buildings near the scene of the blast.

One Dead, Over 40 Injured In Johannesburg Blast

Dr. Mgcini Tshwaku, a Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety in Johannesburg, is calling on residents to exercise caution when using heating appliances during the winter season.
He said the use of heating appliances, stoves, candles, and fires (Imbawula) increases the risk of fire incidents during colder months. The MMC emphasizes the importance of <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">fire safety practices</a> to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents. Tshwaku said the recent <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">fire incident</a> that claimed the life of a woman in Drieziekr, near <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Orange Farm</a>, is a tragic reminder of the dangers of heating appliances.
In a statement seen by Pindula News, the MMC urges residents to never leave heating appliances unattended, especially during load-shedding, and to prioritize fire safety measures. Reads the statement:

The MMC, Dr. Mgcini Tshwaku stated, “Our EMS team responded to a fire incident that claimed the life of a woman in Drieziekr, near Orange Farm in the early hours of this morning. The woman fell asleep after turning on a two plate stove to keep warm. Just last weekend, there was a multiple shack fire incident in Setjwetla informal settlement in Alexandra. I urge all residents to exercise caution when using heating appliances, always ensure that they are never left unattended, especially during load-shedding. Furthermore, I would like to offer my condolences to the family of the woman who lost her life due to a fire in Drieziek this morning.”

Johannesburg Urges Caution With Heating Appliances During Winter Season

South African opposition Patriotic Alliance party secretary Kenny Kunene said that the reaction of some non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to raids conducted by the local authority in Johannesburg buildings made him understand why the late former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe banned some civil society organisations in his country.
During his two-day stint as Johannesburg’s acting mayor, when he stood in for mayor Kabelo Gwamanda who was out of the city, Kunene conducted raids on hijacked buildings in the Joburg CBD.
Several NGOs and human rights organisations condemned the raids, describing them as illegal.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.timeslive.co.za/politics/2023-05-21-i-now-understand-why-mugabe-banned-ngos-says-kenny-kunene/">TimesLive</a>, Kunene vowed to continue with them as he attempts to “clean up the city”. He said:
<blockquote>
We are presenting it officially to the mayoral committee, it needs to be a priority of the government of local unity.
We can’t complain about revenue loss yet we have over 1 700 buildings that have been taken over by criminal syndicates who collect money from our people.
</blockquote>
Kunene castigated “NGOs masquerading as political parties” and challenged them to declare their political interests. He said:
<blockquote>
If they want to govern they must go and contest elections like we did. NGOs must not get involved in the work of the government. It is none of their business.
We have a crisis of buildings being hijacked in this country, our townships and suburbs are infested with illegal foreigners and drug dealers who are not South African.
When we fulfill our mandate and act as the representative of our constituency who has been voted into government, they want to question us.

Kunene, who is the transport MMC, vowed he would not allow NGOs to “misuse” the country’s laws. He said:

I understand why Robert Mugabe banned all NGOs in Zimbabwe, and only allowed NGOs led by Zimbabweans that seek to help Zimbabweans to exist.
</blockquote>
He accused the alleged criminals of illegal electricity and water connections as well as drug dealing.

I Now Understand Why Robert Mugabe Banned NGOs - Joburg Mayor

Two Zimbabweans and five serving members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) were arrested in a sting operation last week over a violent crime wave in Johannesburg’s Fordsburg area.
SAPS spokesperson for Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department Xolani Fihle said the suspects were arrested following a tip-off. Fihle said in a statement:

Seven male suspects between 26 and 45 years of age were arrested by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (IIOC) Undercover Reaction Unit for conspiracy to commit a crime (robbery) and possession of three unlicensed firearms and ammunition in Fordsburg, Johannesburg.
On Wednesday November 16, 2022, officers received a tip-off about a group of individuals planning a robbery in the Fordsburg area using a white Volkswagen Golf 7 GTi and a maroon Volkswagen Polo and officers were deployed at strategic points in the area waiting for the suspects. Not long after the deployment, the said vehicles were identified and the takedown was initiated.
</blockquote>
SAPS intercepted the suspects who were in a white Volkswagen Golf 7 GTi without front and back registration numbers.
 Three male occupants were nabbed, leading to the recovery of an unlicensed 9mm pistol, a SAPS bulletproof vest, caps and badges.
It was discovered that the driver of the vehicle is a SAPS member.
SAPS also intercepted a second vehicle, a maroon Volkswagen Polo with four male occupants. Two unlicensed firearms, a revolver and a 9mm pistol were recovered.
The suspects have allegedly been robbing and terrorising communities in the Fordsburg and Mayfair areas for some time.
All the seven suspects were detained at Johannesburg Central SAPS where a case has been opened for further investigation.

South Africa: 2 Zimbabweans, 5 SAPS Members Arrested Over A Violent Crime Wave

A 25-year-old Zimbabwean national has been arrested in Johannesburg, South Africa, for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
The suspect was arrested on Monday night by police in Joburg, in conjunction with community patrollers, in the city centre.
The spokesperson for the SAPS in Joburg central, Captain Xoli Mbele said the man was arrested at the corner of Noord and Twist Street. He said:

Police were busy with their routine crime prevention duties when they heard gunshots. They proceeded in that direction and saw people running in different directions.
(The) suspect fired another shot in front of the police (who were) wearing civilian clothes.
They grabbed and disarmed him (of) the firearm. He tried to resist but they overpowered him. He failed to produce a licence to possess a firearm.

Mbele added that the firearm will be subjected to ballistic testing to ascertain if it was used in committing other serious and violent crimes.

Zimbabwean National Arrested In Joburg CBD After Firing Shots

Seven people have been killed and five others injured in Ennerdale, Johannesburg.
The incident took place at the corner of Beatrice and Phillips streets in Finetown on Saturday night, <a href="https://www.enca.com/news/crime-sa-six-killed-finetown-attack">eNCA news</a> reported.
Police believe four suspects tried to rob street vendors who were selling chicken feet, but they resisted and that’s when the attack occurred.
South Africa has exceptionally high rates of murder, gender-based violence, robbery and violent conflict.

South Africa: 7 Killed In Johannesburg

Four Zimbabweans were shot dead in a shootout with South African police after they tried to rob a shop at Stoneridge Mall in Johannesburg.
One of the armed robbers killed is 27-year-old Everjoy Ndlovu from Mlomwe, Plumtree. He was wanted by South African police for a series of armed robberies.
Ndlovu’s uncle, Thaba Nleya, confirmed the incident after going to see the body. Nleya said:
<blockquote>
It’s true, we have seen the body, his death is the one that is shocking. As for him being an armed robber, we knew that our nephew was into that.
We warned him many times to leave it but he continued.
We are collecting money from family members and our friends to try and transport his body home since he didn’t have funeral cover.
</blockquote>
According to the Gauteng Province police spokesperson, Major General Girly Mbele, the suspects met the police as they were exiting the mall.
The police approached the mall after hearing gunshots and upon arrival, the suspects fired at the police as they tried to flee. Mbele said:

The suspects were driving a white Nissan Almera and they robbed a shop that sells clothing and cellphones at Studio 88 at Stoneridge Mall.

Four Zimbabweans Shot Dead In Johannesburg

The newly-elected Mayor of Johannesburg, Jolidee Matongo, whose father was a Zimbabwean migrant, has died in a car accident.
Matongo had been appointed as mayor on 10 August and served in the position for just over a month.
A spokesperson confirmed to News24 that the mayor has died. This was further confirmed by two more sources in his office. A statement was expected to be issued on Saturday night.
Matongo had earlier on Saturday accompanied President Cyril Ramaphosa in campaigning for the ANC in this year’s local government elections in Soweto.
He had been elected unopposed as Joburg mayor, succeeding Geoff Makhubo who died in July of COVID-19 complications.

A South African-based Zimbabwean businessman was shot dead in a suspected hit in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, on December 14 just after refuelling his car at a BP Garage.
Bhekimpilo Ndlovu, who for many years had been involved in the cross-border transport business, died when an unidentified man walked up to him and shot him at point-blank range several times before fleeing.

Ndlovu was reported to be in the process of suing a Zimbabwean man living in the United Kingdom, Jabulani Ncube, who is also known as Christopher Tshabalala in South Africa, over an adulterous affair with his wife, Nomazwe.

South African police have arrested a 25-year-old Zimbabwean man suspected of stabbing a woman to death in the Johannesburg CBD on Sunday morning.
Police spokesman Captain Xoli Mbele said that the suspect the 36-year-old woman in the upper body at the corner of Melrose and Von Wielligh streets in the city at around 8 am on Sunday. He said:
<blockquote>Paramedics certified her dead on the scene. The motive for the murder is not yet known.
An investigation is underway and the suspect will appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.</blockquote>
