Dr. Johannes Marisa, a medical practitioner, educationist, and public health expert, says he is concerned about the increasing number of young children, some as young as 10 years old, turning to drugs. He says the global issue of drug abuse has resulted in a significant loss of lives.
Marisa says there are over 190 million drug users worldwide, with the problem particularly affecting young adults below the age of 30. He quotes Roser (2018) who asserts that illicit drug use directly and indirectly causes over 750,000 deaths annually, including 166,000 deaths from drug overdoses. Opioids are identified as the primary cause of overdoses among illicit drugs. Contributors to drug abuse
So many reasons have been given for abusing drugs. Drugs of abuse are usually psychoactive that are used by people for treatment of various health problems.
Curiosity and peer pressure, especially among school children and young adults: Being asked to drink or smoke by friends is one of the strongest predictors of substance abuse in adolescents, even outweighing parenting styles or parental drinking behaviour.
Family dynamics: Maladaptive family dynamics can contribute to substance abuse. Unhealthy attachment styles and dysfunctional family roles can contribute immensely to drug abuse and your early relationships can have a long-lasting impact on your psyche and how you relate to others throughout your life.
Trauma: The link between trauma and substance abuse is strong. Types of trauma that can contribute to drug addiction include assault, rape, sexual abuse, natural disasters and witnessing traumatic events.
Substance use by caregivers: Growing up in an environment where there was heavy alcohol drinking or smoking can predict problem drinking later in life
Genetic factors: Studies done to show the link between genetics and addiction show heritability of the problem at 30-70%
Mental health: Substance abuse and mental health issues often go hand in hand. About half of people with mental health disorders will have substance abuse in their lifestyle. Mental health issues can lead to drug abuse

<h3>Drug Categories:</h3>
– Depressants: Cause depression of brain faculties (e.g., sleeping pills, heroin). 
– Stimulants: Induce brain stimulation and increased activity (e.g., amphetamines, cocaine, nicotine). 
– Hallucinogens: Cause hallucinations and dissociation (e.g., ecstasy, mescaline).
<h3>Effects of Drug Abuse:</h3>
– Transmissible Infections: High risk of viral transmission through needle sharing. 
– Social Neglect: Drug abusers may face social neglect and increased suicide rates. 
– Academic Decline: Drug abuse leads to school abandonment and decreased academic performance. 
– Increased Accidents: Drug use by drivers contributes to accidents and loss of lives.
<h3>Measures to Address Drug Abuse:</h3>
– Counselling: Provide comprehensive counselling on the dangers of drug abuse. 
– Engage Youth: Keep youth actively involved in tasks, activities, and sports. 
– Talent Identification: Identify and nurture talents within the community to divert focus from drugs.
Dr. Marisa emphasizes the need for law enforcement to take action against drug suppliers with strong deterrent sentences. Drug abuse is causing harm to our communities, and it is alarming that drug suppliers are openly known and unpunished. We must unite against drug abuse as it negatively impacts the lives of our children. If your child’s behaviour has suddenly changed, be vigilant and suspicious of possible drug abuse. Together, we can combat this issue and protect our children’s well-being.

Public Health Expert Dr. Marisa Concerned About Rising Drug Use Among Children

Health experts have argued that Zimbabwe’s only chance at stopping the monkeypox outbreak is by strengthening its surveillance and monitoring systems.
Monkeypox, an infection caused by a virus in the same family as the smallpox virus, is fast spreading across the world. 
It is transmitted to humans through close contact with an infected person or animal, or with material contaminated with the virus.
It is far less severe than smallpox, though it causes a similar illness that involves flu-like symptoms and a rash accompanied by lesions.
Community Working Group on Health executive director Itai Rusike said the government should strengthen surveillance and increase awareness of the virus. He told NewsDay Zimbabwe:

Government should work with other health stakeholders in providing education, information and awareness campaigns on monkeypox instead of the current situation where people are relying on social media platforms and their peers risking the rise in misinformation and disinformation just like what happened with COVID-19.
Government needs to urgently respond to the WHO declaration of monkeypox as a public health emergency of international concern. The urgent call issued by WHO is as a result of an escalation of monkeypox cases representing a global threat.
The only way the struggling public health delivery services in Zimbabwe can stop and manage the monkeypox outbreak is by strengthening our surveillance and monitoring systems.

Medical and Dental Private Practitioners Association of Zimbabwe president Johannes Marisa said Zimbabwe can succeed in preventing the spread of monkeypox by employing public health measures like masking up, hand washing and sanitisation and vaccinations.
He added that the country, however, will face challenges in therapeutics as it has limited resources at the moment coupled with a massive brain drain in the health sector.

Only Way Zimbabwe Can Stop Monkeypox Is By Strengthening Surveillance And Monitoring Systems

Private medical doctors have threatened to turn away patients on medical aid until they have been paid for their services.
Medical and Dental Private Practitioners of Zimbabwe Association president Johannes Marisa yesterday said members of his association were struggling to finance their operations as some medical societies were delaying payments or not paying at all. He said:

There are general delays in the reimbursement of our funds after sending claims to these medical societies. There are also some medical aid societies that don’t even pay, and you wonder how they get their operating licences when they don’t pay health covers.
For those that pay, they would find some excuses and pay you meagre amounts that are just stipends instead of paying amounts that benefit us as well.  Very soon, we will tell the medical aid societies that we won’t accept medical aid cards if this is not corrected on time. We are now left with no option except to reject medical aid cards, and this will happen soon.
</blockquote>
He accused some medical aid societies of being arrogant.
Marisa added that they intended to meet soon as private medical players to discuss the matter and many other challenges the sector is facing. 
He said private medical practitioners were charging co-payments in foreign currency to ensure they remained viable and sustained their operations.

Private Medical Doctors Threaten To Turn Away Patients On Medical Aid

A local health expert has urged the government to consider easing the lockdown and reopening schools as the number of coronavirus infections and deaths continues to decline.
Medical and Dental Private Practitioners Association of Zimbabwe (MDPPAZ) president Dr Johannes Marisa also said people should not be swayed by misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines. He said:

Government is going to review lockdown measures from the current Level 4 and it is my belief that with events that are showing in the reduction of the number of cases, Government can actually ease some of the restrictions at the present moment.
We need to see the opening of schools so that our children at least can go to school.
</blockquote>
He, however, indicated that preventative health protocols should remain in place and members of the public should be vaccinated so that the country achieves herd immunity. Added Dr Marisa:

Misinformation and disinformation should be completely eliminated so that our country stands in a very better position in terms of COVID-19 control.
