The Ministry of Health and Childcare has banned the sale and distribution of Johnson and Johnson baby powder in the country and ordered the destruction of the product following findings it caused cancer.
In a memorandum dated 24 May 2023 and addressed to all Provincial Medical Directors (PMDs), the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Air Commodore Jasper Chimedza ordered the products to be destroyed. He wrote:

On 18 April 2023, an American television channel, Consumer News and Business Channel (CNBC) reported that Johnson and Johnson, an American multinational corporation, had assumed the liability to pay eight point nine billion United States Dollars (US$8.9 billion) to the medical industry in compensation over allegations that the company’s baby powder was causing cancer.
Research by the American Academy of Paediatrics unearthed that the talc used in the production of the baby powder was highly toxic due to contamination with carcinogen asbestos.
Tanzania Bureau of Standards on the 19th of April 2023, banned the importation and distribution and sale of Johnson and Johnson’s baby powder containing the talc ingredient.
The product is still popular in South Africa amid indications that most consumers are unaware of its potential risks.
Given the significant importation of health products by Zimbabwe from South Africa, there is a high risk that the contaminated baby powder could still be finding its way into the Zimbabwean market.
Ministry of Health and Child Care is banning the importation and distribution and sale of Johnson and Johnson’s baby powder containing the talc ingredient with immediate effect.
Environmental Health Officers and Technicians are advised to remove all Johnson and Johnson’s baby powder containing the talc ingredient from the market.
Inspectors are advised to document their findings and the products must be destroyed or recalled to the manufacturers.

Zimbabwe Bans Cancer Causing Johnson And Johnson Baby Powder

Health ministry secretary <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Jasper_Chimedza">Jasper Chimedza</a> yesterday revealed that Zimbabwe has only one functional cancer machine.
Chimedza made the remarks when he appeared before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Health and Child Care led by <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Ruth_Labode">Ruth Labode</a> to speak on the country’s curative cancer care.
Radiotherapy machines are used to treat at least 50% of all cancer cases.
Chimedza said the only functional cancer machine in Zimbabwe is privately owned. <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/health/article/200009425/zim-has-only-one-cancer-machine-govt">NewsDay</a> cites him as saying:

In the private sector, we have one of the facilities in Newlands which continues to offer cancer radiotherapy services to both the public and the private sectors. It is not an ideal situation whereby we have one machine working in the country. We need more cancer machines. Patients should not be travelling long distances to access cancer treatment. We need the machines at provincial hospitals.
The machines that we have are not outdated. What we need is software updates and a few areas that need to be attended to. But as part of our thrust as a ministry, we want to extend this service to provincial hospitals. The next phase in terms of procurement of radiotherapy machines is replacement of these machines at provincial hospitals so that patients do not keep on travelling from different provinces to access services.
We are earmarking that all the provincial hospitals will have cancer machines and also the upcoming Lupane Hospital has that provision as well to service patients in Matebeleland North.

Director of pathology services in the Health ministry Max Hove said medical equipment is manufactured outside Africa and this particular type of equipment is manufactured in Switzerland. 
He added that engineers have to travel from Switzerland to come and look at the machines and evaluate them for servicing.
According to Global Cancer Observatory data, in 2020, Zimbabwe reported 16 083 new cases of cancer and 10 676 deaths due to the disease which commonly manifests as cervical, breast and prostate cancer.
The shortage of functioning radiotherapy machines for cancer treatment in Zimbabwe has led to long waiting lists and patients having to seek treatment abroad. 
Journalist Hopewell Chin’ono raised awareness of this issue and alleged corruption in the procurement of a new machine. He was subsequently arrested on politically motivated charges. The situation remains a concern for many.
Some people from Zimbabwe have been going to other countries for cancer treatment because of limited medical resources, and a lack of specialized treatment options. 
However, those with financial constraints find it expensive to go abroad.

Zimbabwe Has Only One Functional Cancer Machine

The government has said the payment of bonuses will be with effect from this year, 2022, paid based on individuals’ performance.
The Public Service Commission (PSC) has since issued a circular to line ministries to that effect.
In a letter seen by Pindula News, the permanent secretary of Health and Child Care, Jasper Chimedza urged the senior management in the health sector to ensure that members in the sector are appraised. Reads the letter addressed to The Chief Directors, Provincial Medical Directors, Acting Chief Medical Directors, Directors, and Deputy Directors:

The Public Service Commission (PSC) has issued a circular notifying of the changed method of payment of bonuses and other performance-related awards in the Civil Service. 
It is advised that with effect from this year, 2022, bonus will ONLY be paid based on performance appraisal reports.
Considering the foregoing, kindly ensure that all members of staff from Deputy director level and below are appraised as per the standard requirements. You will be notified as to when to submit the consolidated performance ratings at the appropriate time.

Govt Says Bonus Will ONLY Be Paid Based On Performance Appraisal Reports

The government of Zimbabwe has raised a red flag over baby powder that was recently imported from South Africa.
This follows an announcement by Tiger Brands, one of the biggest commodity manufacturers in the neighbouring country, that they are recalling batches of Purity Essential Baby Powder over traces of asbestos. Reads the Tiger Brands statement:

Tiger Brands of South Africa is recalling Purity Essential Baby Powder from shops. The product contains unacceptable levels of asbestos which cause a rare cancer called mesothelioma. The traces were recently detected in test samples prompting the recall of the product. The following packages are recalled: Purity Essentials Baby Powder/Purity &amp; Elizabeth Anne’s Essentials Baby Powder (100g) Code 6009523601859, Purity Essentials Baby Powder(200g) Code 6009523601866, Purity Essentials Baby Powder(400g) Code 6009523601828 and Purity &amp; Elizabeth Anne’s Fresh Baby Powder(400g) Code 6009523604515.

Asbestos may cause rare cancer called mesothelioma.
In an advisory to provincial medical directors, directors of health services and chief environment health officers, the permanent secretary of Health and Child Care, Jasper Chimedza, called for the removal of the product from shops. Reads the statement:

Given that a significant number of products in our supermarkets are sourced from South Africa, there is a possibility that some batches of the baby powder in question are already in Zimbabwe.
These products should be removed from the shelves or intercepted at points of entry.

This is not the first time that Tiger Brands have had to recall their products over suspected contamination.
In 2018, the company made continental news after recalling its polony products, after it had been seen that they were contaminated with listeriosis-causing pathogens.
Zimbabwe relies on imports from South Africa to cater for its growing population and Tiger Brands’ products have a huge presence on the domestic market.

Zimbabwe Raises Red Flag Over Baby Powder Imported From South Africa

His Excellency the President, Cde E.D. Mnangagwa, has, in terms of Section 205 (1) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No. 20) Act 2013, approved the appointment of Air Commodore Jasper Chimedza as Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Health and Child Care.
A medical doctor by profession, Air Commodore Chimedza studied Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery Degrees at the University of Zimbabwe before his attestation into the Air Force of Zimbabwe in January 1996. 
On completion of Basic Officers’ Military Course at Buffalo Range in Chiredzi, he was promoted to the Rank of Flight Lieutenant and posted to Thornhill Air Force Base as Medical Officer.
In 1988, Air Commodore Chimedza was promoted to the Rank of Squadron Leader and posted to Manyame Air Force Base as Senior Medical Officer.
Thereafter, he was appointed Director Medical Service at Air Force Headquarters and promoted to the Rank of Wing Commander.
Currently, he is the Director General Health Services at Zimbabwe Defence Forces Headquarters holding the Rank of Air Commodore, a position he has held since 2010.
Dr Chimedza brings with him a wealth of experience to the Ministry of Health and Child Care in particular and the health services sector in general where he is expected to refocus the nation’s health delivery services in order to enhance innovation, integrity, transparency, efficiency and vibrant stakeholder participation as the country fights the war against the COVID-19 pandemic.
His appointment is with immediate effect.

Meanwhile, George Charamba, who is the Deputy Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet (Presidential Communications), has apologised for the error dates in the statement.
The statement said Jasper Chimedza was attested into the Air Force of Zimbabwe in January 1996 and in 1988, he was promoted to the Rank of Squadron Leader. In fact, 1988 and should be “1998″. In a post on Twitter, Charamba said:
