The process synchronising the Hwange Expansion Project’s Unit 7 into the national grid will start on Monday.
In a statement issued on Saturday, 18 March, the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC), a subsidiary of ZESA Holdings, said:
<blockquote>
On Monday the 20th of March 2023, ZPC will begin the process of synchronising the Hwange Expansion Project’s Unit 7 into the national grid.
</blockquote>
The synchronisation of Hwange units 7 and 8 to the grid is expected to add a cumulative 600MW.
Electricity generation has been depressed for months resulting in massive unscheduled power cuts across the country.
On Friday, 17 March 2023, Kariba power station was generating 241MW, Hwange, 315MW, and Harare, 11MW, giving a total of 567MW.
ZESA is importing 100MW from Zambia’s ZESCO, 50MW from HCB Mozambique of Mozambique, and 100MW from Eskom of South Africa.
Zimbabwe needs between 1 500 MW and 1 700MW of electricity for load shedding to end.

Synchronisation Of Hwange Unit 7 Into National Grid Commences On 20 March - ZPC

Energy and Power Development Minister, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Soda_Zhemu">Zhemu Soda</a> has said Hwange Units 7 and 8 can contribute 600MW to the national grid by the first quarter of 2023 and reduce the power deficit in the country. 
The minister told <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/talks-in-progress-to-unlock-additional-power">The Sunday Mail’s</a> correspondent Wallace Ruzvidzo (WR) that Hwange Power Station (HPS) has consistently generated an average of 400 MW from four units out of a total of six units.
He also said The current power deficit is about 600MW after imports from neighbouring South Africa and Mozambique.
Ruzvidzo asked Soda about the impact the Hwange Units 7 and 8 will have on the power situation in the country once commissioned and the minister responded by saying:

Hwange Units 7 and 8 are expected to add 300MW in November and another 300MW in the first quarter of 2023. Hwange extension supply shall assist to cover the prevailing deficit as well as reduce over-utilisation of Kariba Water.
</blockquote>
He added that a total capacity of 1100MW (Hwange Expansion and Solar PV) from ZESA-driven projects and various contributions by private players conditions have been set for them to generate electricity in the next three years. 
Soda added that the Hwange Expansion project was estimated to cost US$450 million in the year 2015. In 2020, a US $310 million Line of Credit (LoC) from India was secured. 
He also said Zimbabwe was importing limited amounts of power because it owes suppliers.

Energy Minister Says Hwange Expansion Project To "Cut" Zimbabwe's Power Deficit

ZESA Holdings deputy chair Ms Tsitsi Makova yesterday said the construction of the Hwange 7 and 8 Thermal Power Station is now 82 per cent complete. 
Once complete, it will add an additional 600MW generating capacity to the national grid.
Speaking at the ZESA 2021 risk management awards ceremony held at their national training centre running under the theme, “Powering the nation to 2030 through Risk Management”, she said:

Progress at Hwange 7 and 8 thermal power project is now 82 per cent complete, although delays in procurement of imported materials due to Covid-19 induced restrictions affected some of the targeted works.
The completion of the project will add an additional 600MW to the national grid which will go a long way in contributing to the national economic recovery.
</blockquote>
Ms Makova said desires to become self-sufficient and narrow the demand-supply gap, minimise power imports and conserve foreign currency.
Zimbabwe has been having power cuts in the past two years amid reports that the country’s main power generators, Hwange Thermal and Kariba Hydro Power Stations have not been producing to their maximum capacity due to faults.
Zimbabwe also imports power from neighbouring Mozambique and South Africa.

ZESA: Hwange Power Projects 82% Complete

ZESA Holdings’ subsidiary company, the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) said the Hwange Expansion Project (Unit 7 and 8) is at 22 per cent completion and on schedule.
In a statement on Twitter, the company said Units 7 and 8 to be commissioned in October 2021 and January 2022 respectively. The statement reads:

Hwange Expansion Project 22% Complete

The Herald reports that the expansion of the Hwange Power plant project has begun in earnest. Laying of the foundation store has now started.
The main points about the project:
<ul>
<li>The company implementing the project is called Hwange Electricity Supply Company (HESCO)</li>
<li>It is a partnership between Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) and Sinohydro</li>
<li>It’s expected to employ more than 3,000 people. 450 are already employed.</li>
<li>The expansion is expected to be completed in 2022</li>
<li>At completion generation of power from the power station will double from the current 600MW to 1200MW.</li>
<li>Currently, even though it generates 600MW it has a capacity of generating 600MW.</li>
<li>The project cost US $1,488 billion which is being funded by China Exim Bank, Sinohydro and Government through Infrastructure Development Bank of Zimbabwe.</li>
<li>It’s not clear what the split is or what the deal for the Chinese is.</li>
</ul>
Energy and Power Development Minister Dr. Joram Gumbo said yesterday at the site:
