The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Harare_Institute_of_Technology/">Harare Institute of Technology (HIT)</a> in Zimbabwe has made significant progress in the production of lithium batteries for passenger vehicles, the state-run <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/zimbabwe-starts-lithium-car-batteries-production/">Chronicle</a> reported. This breakthrough has the potential to accelerate the country’s involvement in clean energy technologies. Zimbabwe boasts one of the world’s largest reserves of hard-rock lithium, a crucial mineral used in the production of lithium-ion batteries.
HIT has successfully purified lithium phosphate and manufactured prototype cells, marking a significant step towards commercial production. The university’s Vice Chancellor, Dr. <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Quinton_Kanhukamwe/">Quinton Kanhukamwe</a>, announced their vision to commence commercial production of lithium batteries for vehicles in 2024 during HIT’s 14th graduation ceremony where President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Emmerson_Mnangagwa/">Emmerson Mnangagwa</a> capped 639 students, with 38.8% of them being female graduates. Dr. Kanhukamwe said:

As a result, your university has been successful in developing a lithium phosphate 3.2V, 60Ah battery cell, when coupled in either parallel for more voltage or series for enhanced current, the cells will produce sufficient power to drive passenger vehicles.
Our vision is to start commercial production of lithium batteries for vehicles in 2024.

He expressed pride in the university’s engineering and technology graduates, highlighting their strong entrepreneurial skills and determination to establish high-tech enterprises. 
Dr. Kanhukamwe also highlighted the progress made in various sectors of the economy alongside the breakthrough in lithium battery production. HIT is collaborating with Kosygin Russian State University and local universities to improve cotton output, which is currently low compared to Russia and India. The focus is on cotton seed development to increase farmers’ income and boost exports.
HIT is also engaged in designing and manufacturing transformers for commercial sale and has launched three spin-off companies. These spin-offs include InstiBio, which focuses on agricultural and medical biotechnology, InstiRad, which provides affordable radiography services to underserved communities, and InstiQuip, which offers machine design expertise.
The institute has expanded research collaborations with universities in China, Russia, the United States, Indonesia, and Belarus, aiming to enhance research quality and innovation. Additionally, HIT has established a training collaboration with Rwanda’s Ministry of Health to enrol students in radiography and ultrasound degree programs. These efforts contribute to the development of Zimbabwe’s economy and healthcare sector.

The Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) is requesting former students who graduated from the university in previous years up to 2022 to visit or contact the finance office to collect their caution fee refunds.
According to a statement seen by Pindula News, the institution has stated that if students fail to do so by September 30, 2023, the funds will be forfeited to the university. Read the statement:

STUDENTS WHO GRADUATED FROM THE UNIVERSITY IN PRIOR YEARS UP TO 2022 ARE ADVISED TO VISIT OR CALL THE FINANCE OFFICE TO COLLECT THEIR CAUTION FEES REFUNDS. FAILURE TO DO SO BY 30TH SEPTEMBER 2023 WILL RESULT IN THE FUNDS BEING FORFEITED TO THE UNIVERSITY.

Former HIT Students Urged To Collect Caution Fee Refunds By September 30, 2023

The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT)) to enhance domestic resource mobilisation.
The prime objectives of the MoU are to provide a broad base for cooperation with the intention of mobilising domestic revenue through the use of their respective personnel, facilities, electronics and resources to unearth economic and business activities being conducted within the economy.
The agreement also involves collaboration in the development of local software solutions to enhance domestic resource mobilisation for the economic development of Zimbabwe.
The two parties agreed to exchange information concerning strategies for revenue mobilisation and collection with a view to developing a common understanding of challenges being faced. 
This will include information on sector-specific practices on tax levying and collection, together with the implementation of special projects in different sectors to assess and implement tax compliance, share information on the formulation and implementation of compliance programmes with special emphasis on the use of technological and electronic systems.
ZIMRA and HIT shall provide each other with practical, technical and theoretical training on revenue mobilisation and development of software solutions in domestic resource mobilisation to enhance the capacity of ZIMRA. 
The overall aim is to improve ZIMRA’s service delivery. They also agreed to establish a Joint Technical Committee to oversee the implementation and administration of this MoU.
ZIMRA Acting Commissioner General, Mr Rameck Masaire applauded both parties for working tirelessly to produce this MoU. He said:

I am very cognisant about the process that ZIMRA and HIT went through so as to balance the interest of both parties and bear transformative ideas whose positive impact will be felt across the economy and beyond.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, HIT Vice-Chancellor Dr Eng. Q.C Kanhukamwe said the partnership is a convergence of minds and is pivotal in making breakthroughs in terms of resource mobilization and industrialisation.
