The Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Felix Mhona, said that the rehabilitation of the Harare-Chirundu road will cost more than half a million United States dollars.
Responding to questions from the media during the launch of the project in Harare earlier this week, Mhona said the project should be completed within the next 18 months at a cost of over US$550 million. He said, as quoted by <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/over-us550-million-for-harare-chirundu-highway-rehabilitation-mhona/">NewZimbabwe.com</a>:

Those who remember, for the Harare-Chirundu road, we were talking of over US$550 million for the rehabilitation. 
This is what we are working with. As we progress, we will continue updating and briefing the electorate.

Mhona said that not only the Harare-Chirundu highway was undergoing rehabilitation, but all roads countrywide needed attention.
He said the Beitbridge-Masvingo-Harare highway is 99% complete where five local construction companies got contracts to work the busiest highway in the country known as R1.
The companies which are working on the road are Masimba Construction (Pvt) Ltd, Tensor System, Exodus, Fossil and Bitumen.

Harare-Chirundu Highway Rehabilitation To Cost Over US$550 Million - Mhona

The Government has commenced the rehabilitation of the Harare – Chirundu Highway starting at Harare Post Office (peg zero) ahead of the 44th Southern African Development Community (SADC) Heads of State and Government Summit scheduled to be held in Harare in August.
<a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/major-roads-in-harare-closed-for-rehabilitation/">The Herald</a> reported that at least 40 greater roads in and around the city have been lined up for the rehabilitation exercise which is being overseen by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development.
The roads where the ministry shall apply asphaltic concrete overlay includes Samora Machel (Jaggers to Kuwadzana Roundabout), Dieppe roundabout, Glenara/Samora junction, Glenara/ED Mnangagwa Road, Chiremba (through Braeside), Robert Mugabe/Abdel Gamal Nasser, Josiah Tongogara, Harare Drive roundabout Jaggers, Lomagundi Road (selected sections), Simon Muzenda Street/Robert Mugabe junction to Tongogara Road, and Simon Muzenda Street/Robert Mugabe junction to Tongogara Road.
In a statement, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development the rehabilitation of the roads is to facilitate an efficient and smooth flow of traffic during the SADC summit. It said:

The Republic of Zimbabwe shall be hosting the 44th SADC Heads of State and Government Summit in August this year.
As part of the preparatory works, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development is tasked with constructing and rehabilitating road infrastructure to facilitate efficient and smooth flow of the delegates and the citizenry during the summit.
The ministry has initiated a procurement process for the above Greater Harare roads to engage the contractors that are compliant under Category A to participate in the tender through competitive bidding to ensure that there is value for money.
The SADC Summit roads construction works include the urban section of the Harare–Chirundu Road project from Julius Nyerere Way to Westgate traffic circle (Second Street and Lomagundi Road), which is being rehabilitated, widened, and dualised and includes street lighting and landscaping.

The ministry has directed the contractor apportioned that section on the Harare–Chirundu Road project, Fossil Contracting, to immediately prioritise the works for completion on or before July 31, 2024.
Exodus and Company has been directed to prioritise the urban section from the Lomagundi intersection with Second Street to the new Parliament Boulevard main access.
The works on this section will include dualisation street lighting and landscaping for completion on or before July 31, 2024. Said the Ministry:

Lastly, pursuant to the Cabinet approval obtained in April 2023 for Bitumen World to construct the North–South Corridor Link and the new Parliament Main Accesses, the ministry has directed Bitumen World to prioritise the New Parliament Main Accesses including street lighting and landscaping which also must be completed on or before July 31, 2024.
The ongoing works show the commitment by the ministry to deliver meaningful progress towards infrastructural development and ensuring satisfactory road infrastructure in support of the August SADC Summit.

Bitumen World is constructing about 13km of the Old Mazowe Road from the Westgate roundabout and is expected to complete all the roads by July 31 this year.
After constructing the 13km, the Government plans to reconstruct the other part of the road up to Mazowe, linking it with Bindura Road later this year.
The other road currently under construction is the 7km boulevard that stretches from Bindura Road straight to the New Parliament Building.
It will have eight lanes (four on the right side and four on the left side) and all this is expected to be done by mid-year.
Others are the 4.7km crescent around Parliament and a 2km road that will also lead to the New Parliament Building.

Govt Commences Rehabilitation Of Roads In Harare In Preparation For SADC Summit

Nine people died, while 12 others were injured in a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on Monday evening along the Harare-Chirundu Highway. The accident involved a Nissan Caravan and Honda Fit vehicles that collided head-on.
The injured are currently receiving medical treatment at Sally Mugabe Central and Inkomo hospitals. The bodies of the deceased were taken to Norton Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem.
Yesterday, the national police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, released a statement confirming the fatal road traffic accident. He said:

The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident in which nine people died whilst twelve others were injured when a Nissan Caravan vehicle with yet to be established passengers on board was involved in a head on collision with a Honda Fit vehicle with seven passengers on board at the 53 kilometre peg along Harare-Chirundu Road on 03/07/23 at around 1800 hours. The bodies of the victims were taken to Norton Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured are admitted at Inkomo and Sally Mugabe Hospitals.

In a separate incident that occurred on the same day, three people died, and four others sustained injuries when a Toyota Hilux vehicle with nine passengers on board veered off the road and hit the trailer of a Mthethi Dragon Bus with six passengers on board. The bodies of the victims were taken to Gwanda Provincial Hospital mortuary for post-mortem, while the injured are admitted to the same hospital.
Assistant Commissioner Nyathi urged the public to avoid boarding pirate taxis and called on drivers to follow road rules and avoid reckless driving, which causes unnecessary loss of lives. He emphasized the importance of road safety and urged everyone to take responsibility for their safety and that of others when using the roads.

Fatal Accident on Harare-Chirundu Highway: 9 Dead, 12 Injured

The Harare-Chirundu highway, which connects several southern African countries, is now dilapidated and has become a death trap, according to motorists who frequent the road.
The highway connects South Africa and Zimbabwe to Zambia, Malawi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania, among other countries, and facilitates trade in the region, reported The NewsHawks.
The state of the road now poses many problems for travellers which include damage to car tyres, damage to vehicles, slowing down movement and business, and increasing accidents.
Ronald Kabeta, a commuter omnibus driver plying the Karoi-Harare route, told the publication that driving on the road, especially at night has become a nightmare. He said:

Of late, many travellers have been forced to park and sleep along the highway, especially when travelling during the night, after hitting dangerous potholes that are now a permanent feature along the way. The road is now dilapidated due to potholes and old lifespan.
The road is now badly dilapidated; it is now a death trap. It’s difficult to navigate. It’s really dangerous.
With the current rains which have filled the potholes and eroded the road, some cars have been left on roadsides due to tyre punctures, malfunctioning engines affected by water and damages by the road dilapidation.

Chamu Gomo, a Karoi resident, has implored the government to repair the road as a matter of urgency. He said:

It is no longer advisable to overtake during the night along that highway as you may plunge into a pothole filled with water.
The road has collapsed, causing disasters and we wonder if the government has plans to quickly fix this road urgently as senior officials use it when they visit Kariba resort town for meetings or holidays.
When driving at night, never try to overtake because cars in front of you will be blinding you from seeing the potholes.
Speeding is dangerous on a potholed road like the Harare-Chirundu highway.

Kariba Tourism and Business Indaba administrator Cephas Shonhiwa said the bad state of the Harare-Chirundu highway is now negatively affecting tourism. Shonhiwa said:

The Harare-Chirundu highway is now a big issue as it has been neglected for far too long. With the continued rains and potholes, our clients are badly affected.
A poor road network is one of our challenges as a sector. We are appealing to the government to act on repairing the potholes along the highway as we don’t have any scheduled flights from Harare to Kariba for business travellers.
Without scheduled flights to both Kariba and Chirundu, the only mode of travel is by road which is in extremely bad shape.
The tourism sector is suffering from cancellation of bookings due to the road that is not easily accessible.
This has a huge negative impact on economic growth in the sector.

"Harare-Chirundu Highway Now A Death Trap"

Police have warned haulage truck drivers to avoid travelling at night on the Harare-Chirundu highway saying there are dangerous criminals who are on the prowl targeting trucks between 7 PM and 5 AM.
In a statement, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the criminals pounce on the trucks on a stretch from 160 km peg to 170 km peg along the highway. He said:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges haulage truck drivers travelling along the Harare-Chirundu highway to be on the lookout for criminals targeting trucks travelling uphill at low speeds, especially between 1900 hours and 0500 hours.
Police inquiries have revealed that targeted places are Mapinga mountains, Mtala mountains and a stretch from 160 km peg to 170 km peg along Harare-Chirundu Highway.
The criminals are robbing drivers and passengers of personal belongings which include cash, cellphones and laptops, diesel and the load being carried by trucks.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police advises truck drivers to avoid moving during the night and where possible, move in convoys.
Truck drivers are warned against picking up passengers along the way as some of them have turned out to be robbers.

Police Urge Truck Drivers To Be On Lookout For Robbers  Along Harare-Chirundu Highway

The mastermind behind the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/01/07/the-armed-robbers-where-given-a-lift-by-the-people-ferrying-the-cash-zrp-on-the-us2-5-million-heist/">ZB Bank US$2.7 million and $43 000 heist</a> which occurred in January last year at Gwebi River Bridge along the Harare-Chirundu Road has been arrested in Harare after being on the run for nearly two years.
Shadreck Njowa was arrested at a house in Highfield where he has been hiding, according to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/us27-million-zb-bank-heist-mastermind-arrested/">The Herald</a>.
Detectives from CID Homicide in Harare received information that Njowa was hiding at a house he used to reside and raided the place leading to his arrest.
Njowa is said to be in custody and is assisting with investigations.

Recently, the local financial institution offered a US$5 000 reward for leads that might result in the arrest of Njowa and his two other accomplices who were believed to have been part of the gang that robbed the bank.
The other two are Patson Matengambiri and Nyasha Chitera.
The trio were in the company of 11 other gang members who have since been arrested and the matter is still pending before the court.
The robbery of the US$2.7 million and $43 000 from a cash-in-transit ZB Bank vehicle was believed to have been an inside job where three security personnel in the vehicle allegedly connived with robbers.
The three security staff – Nomatter Jonga (43), Mathew Simango (66) and Fanuel Musakwa (34) – were arrested and have since appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Court.

Mastermind Behind ZB Bank US$2.7, ZW$43K Heist Arrested Nearly Two Years Later

A Highlands family in Harare reportedly lost over US$18 000 cash to two armed robbers on Wednesday.
The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Republic_Police">Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP)</a> reports that the assailants were armed with an unidentified pistol. Reads the police report:

Police in Harare is investigating a robbery case in which two suspects armed with an unidentified pistol pounced at the complainant’s house in Highlands on 13/07/22 and stole US$18 222 cash. Anyone with information to contact any nearest Police station.

Meanwhile, the ZRP is investigating a robbery case which occurred at the 138 km peg along Harare-Chirundu Road near Johns Farm in Chinhoyi on the 13th of July 2022 at around 1930 hours. 
Police report that four unidentified suspects attacked a fuel tanker driver and his assistant before stealing US$11 000 cash. The driver had stopped the tanker to attend to a mechanical fault.
