Zimbabwe’s President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, expressed his condolences on the passing of Namibian President Hage Geingob. President Geingob, who was 82 years old, died after battling cancer. He died on Sunday at Lady Pohamba Hospital in Windhoek, surrounded by his family.
Acting President Nangolo Mbumba shared a statement on Geingob’s official Facebook page expressing deep sorrow over his passing. In a statement seen by Pindula News, President Mnangagwa also expressed his sadness and extended his condolences to Namibia. He referred to President Geingob as a pan-Africanist, a liberation hero, and a visionary statesman who served his people with distinction. Mnangagwa said:

My Dear Brother and Colleague, I was deeply touched and saddened by the sudden passing on of President Hage Geingob. On behalf of my Party, ZANU (PF), the Government and the people of the Republic of Zimbabwe, my family and my behalf, I sincerely extend to the great people of Namibia, the SWAPO Party, and the bereaved Geingob family our deepest, heartfelt condolences.
We in Zimbabwe fondly remember President Geingob as a pan-Africanist, a liberation hero and a visionary statesman who served his people with utmost distinction. We deeply cherish the exemplary role that he played in consolidating the excellent relations that exist between Zimbabwe and Namibia, as well as in advancing the integration agenda of our regional body, SADC, and the cause of the African peoples and Continent. Mnangagwa Mourns Geingob Describes Him As A Pan-Africanist, Liberation Hero, Visionary Statesman

Namibian President Hage Geingob has died at the age of 82. His office confirmed the news, stating that he passed away on Sunday at Lady Pohamba Hospital in Windhoek. President Geingob was surrounded by his wife and children during his final moments, <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/2/4/namibias-president-hage-geingob-dies-aged-82">Al Jazeera</a> reported. The acting president, Nangolo Mbumba, expressed deep sorrow in a statement posted on Geingob’s official Facebook page. Mbumba said:

The Namibian nation has lost a distinguished servant of the people, a liberation struggle icon, the chief architect of our constitution and the pillar of the Namibian house.
At this moment of deepest sorrow, I appeal to the nation to remain calm and collected while the Government attends to all necessary state arrangements, preparations and other protocols. Further announcements in this regard will be made.
</blockquote>
Geingob had recently started cancer treatment after cancerous cells were discovered during a routine medical examination. However, his office did not provide specific details about his diagnosis or prognosis. Despite his health challenges, Geingob remained committed to fulfilling his presidential duties. He had previously undergone brain surgery in 2013 and successfully battled prostate cancer the following year. Last year, he also underwent aortic surgery in South Africa.
Namibia, a former German colony that gained independence from South Africa in 1990, is preparing for presidential and parliamentary elections in November. However, Geingob was ineligible to seek reelection due to constitutional limits on the president’s terms in office. The ruling SWAPO Party’s presidential candidate, Nandi-Ndaitwah, has the potential to become the country’s first female head of state if elected.

Namibian President Hage Geingob Has Died

Zimbabwe’s former Tourism minister, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Walter_Mzembi/">Walter Mzembi</a> has said he has observed from the 27 September 2023 SADC Troika Meeting that Zimbabwe’s ruling party, ZANU PF, is too strong for the region.
The meeting, chaired by President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia, discussed Zimbabwe’s 23 August 2023 disputed elections, which received criticism from regional and international observers. President Mnangagwa maintained that the elections were free and fair, but SADC, AU, and EU disagreed, citing shortcomings in meeting standards.
Leaders from Namibia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Tanzania attended the meeting.
Mzembi expressed concerns about the SADC meeting, noting that the regional bloc may not solve Zimbabwe’s political deadlock as expected by some stakeholders including the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC). The party led by <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Nelson_Chamisa/">Nelson Chamisa</a> approached SADC in a bid to push for fresh elections. He said:

A deputation of representation by the President of Namibia (Hage Geingob) and (Samia Hassan Suluhu), of Tanzania, completing the Troika chaired by (Hakainde Hichilema), of Zambia is not a good sign for those reading too much into an anticipated SADC solution. Hichilema chairing Vice Presidents and officials means a downgrade of Zimbabwe Polls issue to a routine report.
ZANU PF is too strong for the Region and its abrasive gunboat Zanufication diplomacy has seen even seemingly bigger brothers turning into its “errand boys” twisted by anti-sanctions solidarity.

Mzembi also noted that President Mnangagwa’s visit to President Hage Geingob of Namibia may have worked to strengthen relations amongst liberation parties in SADC.
He also said the strategy employed by ZANU PF and its allies in SADC is to buy time and hope the election dispute fades away and may prevail without fresh impetus from the people. Mzembi also noted that a business-as-usual approach in Parliament and Government may contribute to moving past the issue of the disputed elections.
He added that the non-performing economy will continue to remind people of the disputed elections and if or when ZANU PF resolves the economic challenges, the ruling party will gain performance legitimacy.
Mzembi also said Zimbabweans cannot rely solely on SADC to resolve their disputes, therefore, since renewed pressure from the people is unlikely, the matter is likely to fade away.
He added that overcoming repression requires resources, courage, and a new nationalist approach dismissing the need to seek foreign solutions. He said homemade solutions are needed to provide relief from the constraints of self-serving past liberators.

Former Tourism Minister Mzembi Says ZANU PF Is Too Strong For SADC

Namibia’s Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Jenelly Matundu, has come to the defence of President Hage Geingob for congratulating Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on his election victory. Matundu made this statement during a parliamentary session in response to questions from Maximalliant Katjimune, a parliamentarian from the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM).
Mnangagwa was declared the winner of the Zimbabwean presidential elections held on 23 – 24 August 2023 by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, securing 52.6% of the votes. However, the SADC Observer Mission deemed the elections inconsistent with the Constitution of Zimbabwe, the Electoral Act, and the SADC principles and guidelines for democratic elections.
In her response to Katjimune’s inquiry about why Geingob congratulated Mnangagwa despite the SADC Observer Mission’s findings, Matundu explained that diplomatic standards and practices dictate that Geingob should extend congratulations to his counterpart following election results. Matundu said:

It is essential to clarify that the official opposition, the Citizen’s Coalition for Change (CCC), did not lodge any case with the Electoral Court. In any democratic system, legal avenues are available to address election-related grievances. 
It is the responsibility of the concerned parties to pursue these avenues should they have concerns about the electoral process.

According to Matundu, in the absence of any court challenge, President Mnangagwa was inaugurated on 4 September, which she said is in accordance with the relevant constitutional provisions. Matundu said:

It is worth noting that Electoral Observation Missions are not aimed at affirming or nullifying election results, but are geared at enhancing accountability, transparency and participation as core tenets of democratic processes in the region.

Matundu assured Namibia’s commitment to transparency and individual rights, including voting.
She also emphasised the positive relations between Namibia and Zimbabwe, praising Zimbabwe’s dedication to democracy. Matundu stressed the importance of dialogue and cooperation to strengthen democratic institutions, urging both countries to address any shortcomings.

Namibia's Deputy Minister Defends President Geingob For Congratulating Zimbabwe's President Mnangagwa

Namibia’s President Hage Geingob has congratulated Emmerson Mnangagwa and ZANU PF for winning the recently-held Harmonised Elections.
On Saturday, 26 August, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) chairperson Priscilla Makanyara Chigumba announced that Mnangagwa had been re-elected president.
ZEC said Mnangagwa scored 2,350,111 votes, beating CCC’s Nelson Chamisa who garnered 1,967,343 which translates to 44 percent of the vote.
On Sunday, the Namibian leader, Geingob described the 23 and 24 August Harmonised Elections as “peaceful”. In a statement, Geingob’s spokesperson, Alfredo Hengari said:

On behalf of the people and government of the Republic of Namibia, President Hage G. Geingob extended (on Sunday) 27 August 2023 warm congratulations to the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, His Excellency Comrade Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa.
President Geingob also extended through President Mnangagwa fraternal felicitations to ZANU PF, the sister party of SWAPO (the South West Africa People’s Organisation), on the victory in the peaceful harmonised elections held on August 23.
President Geingob further said that the re-election of His Excellency Comrade Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa was indeed a testimony of the trust and confidence in which the people of Zimbabwe continue to repose in President Mnangagwa and ZANU PF.
President Geingob wished President Mnangagwa good strength and wisdom in carrying out his renewed mandate and looked forward to working closely with President Mnangagwa to further deepen and strengthen our bilateral cooperation as well as advancing the shared regional development agenda.

Meanwhile, Chamisa rejected the election results announced by ZEC, insisting that he had won.

Namibia President Hage Geingob Congratulates Mnangagwa On "Peaceful" Elections

Namibia’s Vice President, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah could become the country’s first female president after the incumbent, Hage Geingob said she would be the ruling SWAPO party’s sole candidate in elections set to be held in 2024.
Addressing a SWAPO central committee meeting on Saturday, Geingob said all party members should rally behind Nandi-Ndaitwah when the right time comes. <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/namibias-hage-geingob-declares-nandi-ndaitwah-as-his-successor/">ZimLive </a>quoted him as saying:
<blockquote>
We are going to have one candidate only when the time comes. That will be comrade Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.
So, let’s stop the rumours, dreams, fears and so on. The time is not here yet. The appropriate time [will come].
And we will campaign because it’s SWAPO at stake. There are a lot of things at stake. SWAPO and the country.
When you have processes, systems, and institutions, it’s not [about] an individual. It’s a question of our party and country.
Therefore, we have a person who will lead us, supported by all of us, whether you were opposed to [her]… that’s politics. It’s democracy.
You have the right to oppose, disagree or condemn a person. But when that person is elected, that’s why I kept on saying, don’t play the person, play the ball. When the game is over, you kick the ball away.
… When it’s over, it’s over. I hope we don’t go and have factions from now on. I’ve been hearing it still. It’s over. We have elected candidates.
When the time comes, we will properly campaign for her. We will do the campaign, some of us so that she is elected on behalf of SWAPO.

Nandi-Ndaitwah would be Namibia’s fourth president since the country gained independence from South Africa in 1990.
Geingob, who is serving the last of his two terms, succeeded Hifikepunye Pohamba in 2015.
Pohamba served as the second president of Namibia from March 2005 to March 2015 after taking over from the country’s first president Sam Nujoma, who ruled from 1990 to 2005.

Namibia: Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah Set To Succeed President Hage Geingob

Zimbabwe has offered Namibia one acre of land in its Pan-African Memorial Park and Museum of African Liberation Project in Liberation City, Harare.
The land is for the construction of an outdoor monument to commemorate Namibia’s emancipation from the South African apartheid government.
This was revealed by ZANU PF secretary for external relations Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, when he delivered a special message from President Emmerson Mnangagwa to Namibia’s president, Hage Geingob at State House in Windhoek on Thursday. He said:

I am pleased to say, Your Excellency, that the government of Zimbabwe is offering 4 400 square metres of space for Namibia to erect a monument commemorating Namibia’s independence from South Africa’s apartheid government. The memorial park will have a number of monuments.
We will have a world-class shopping mall within the complex, 20 hectares of an animal park, 20 hectares of an amusement park, and a heritage village in the memorial park.

On his part, Geingob hailed the project, saying it was good that Africans are telling their own stories. He said:

Sounds good. People want us to forget about our history. They are working hard trying to talk that we are backward, and we are not moving forward.
But let us not be discouraged; let’s go ahead and tell our glorious history.
I welcome it. It is a very good idea – a greeting to my brother – let’s record our history.

Zimbabwe Offers Namibia Land To Construct Liberation Monument

Namibia and Botswana have agreed to lift passport requirements on their border, a first for southern Africa.
Namibian president Hage Geingob, speaking in the Botswana capital Gaborone on Friday, said nationals of the two countries would only need to produce IDs to move between the two countries. 
Geingob said, speaking during the inaugural Botswana-Namibia bi-national commission:
<blockquote>
Our two countries not only share a common border, but also a common people and heritage. A symbiotic and inter-dependent relationship exists along our common borders.
Therefore, I call on our senior officials to fast-track the implementation of the usage of Identity Documents (IDs) as travel documents between the two countries, without delay.

The development came after President Geingob’s meeting with President Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi, 
Meanwhile, the development has resulted in criticism aimed at neighbouring Zimbabwe with award-winning journalist, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Hopewell_Chin%27ono">Hopewell Chin’ono</a> saying Botswana has been meeting Zimbabwean leaders but nothing tangible has materialised. In a Facebook post seen by Pindula News, Chin’ono said:

President Mokgweetsi E. K. Masisi of Botswana came to Zimbabwe and repeated the sanctions propaganda line.
But back home in Botswana whilst meeting billionaire businessman Strive Masiyiwa, he correctly said that Zimbabwe is not a safe place for investment because of lack of Rule of Law!
It is so sad that President Masisi would do this coming to Zimbabwe and playing politics with our lives lying about sanctions yet when he is home he tells the truth.
The countries around us have benefited from the lack of Rule of Law in Zimbabwe because investments go to their countries running away from Zimbabwe.
Very sad!!! At least they shouldn’t lie about why we are in this ZANUPF man-made crisis!

Namibia, Botswana Lift Passport Requirements On Their Border

Namibia has scrapped the mandatory wearing of masks in public places as the number of COVID-19 positive cases is declining.
Speaking during the 41st COVID-19 briefing on the national response measures on Tuesday, Namibia President, Hage Geingob, also increased the size of public gatherings from 500 to 1 000. He said:
<blockquote>
Wearing masks in public places is no longer mandatory. However, people who are in close settings, such as public transport, indoor public meetings are encouraged to wear masks.
A physical distance of no less than 1 meter must be maintained between persons at all times.
The size of public gatherings will be adjusted from 500 to 1 000 people. This will be applicable to all social gatherings as defined in the Regulations, including weddings, funerals, church services and sporting events.
Fully vaccinated travellers are no longer required to produce a negative PCR test result upon arrival at Namibian Points of Entry.
They are instead required to present an authentic, valid vaccination card at Points of Entry.

Namibia’s coronavirus recovery rate stands at 97 per cent, with a case fatality rate of 2.5 per cent. Active cases stood at 222 on Monday.
The new regulations come into force from midnight for a period of 30 days until April 15.

President Mnangagwa has urged member states of the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA TFCA) to stick to their collective position on sustainable elephant conservation management. He also implored member states not to succumb to pressure from powerful economies who advocate the imposition of a ban on legal ivory trade.
Speaking during the just ended Kasane Elephant Summit 2019 in Botswana, president Mnangagwa said:
<blockquote>As we approach CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of fauna and flora), let us therefore, resolutely affirm our collective position on sustainable elephant conservation management. Let us boldly speak with one voice, in the best interests of our communities. The ‘one size fits all’ banning of everything under CITES, disregarding the good efforts and investments by our respective Governments is neither sustainable nor desirable.</blockquote>
The summit was also attended by President Mokgweetsi Masisi (Botswana), President Edgar Lungu (Zambia) and President Hage Geingob (Namibia). It raised the issued of poaching that has become rampant in Africa.

ED Calls For Regional Collective Effort Towards Conserving Wildlife

SADC chairperson and Namibian President Hage Geingob on Sunday engaged the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres over the deteriorating situation in Zimbabwe.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the ongoing African Union meeting in Ethiopia. This was revealed through a statement released by the Namibian president’s office. The statement reads:
<blockquote>I just concluded this morning talks with the SG of the UN. We discussed the political situation in the DRC, Zimbabwe and wider SADC region.
We agreed on the complementary nature of SADC and the UN efforts to improve governance and the quality of life of SADC citizens.</blockquote>
Zimbabwe’s security forces have been accused of human rights violations during a violent crackdown on protesters during the January demonstrations over a sharp fuel hike announced by President Emmerson Mnangagwa. 17 people were reportedly killed.

Namibian workers have called upon the country’s president, Hage Geingob to intervene in the deteriorating situation in Zimbabwe. Geingob is the current chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Namibia’s Trade Union Congress (TUC)secretary general Mahongoro Kavihuha said:
<blockquote>The crisis in Zimbabwe started more or less at [the same time of the] election in the DRC. He was eager to talk about the DRC, but when it comes to Zimbabwe, until this stage he is quiet.
… Today, we learned that the vice president of ZCTU was arrested, and many more trade union leaders have been arrested and tortured, including citizens.
… We are aware that the liberation movements are in cahoots regarding oppressing people’s rights and people’s feelings, but I hope that our president will show some degree of being a responsible leader, and call upon his counterpart in Zanu-PF to at least respect human rights.</blockquote>
Most of the regional countries have remained quiet on the government of Zimbabwe’s brutal crackdown on civilians. South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress said that it was fully behind the government’s brutal clampdown on protestors which reslted in the death of more than 12 people.

Namibian Workers Urge SADC Chairperson To Intervene In Zimbabwean Crisis

Namibian President Hage Geingob has rervealed that his country will emark on a land reform and that he is going to learn from Zimbabwe’s successul land reform programme. SApeaking at a State banquet held for him by President Mugabe at State House on Wednesday, Geingob revealed that his country’s citizens want him to address the land issue.
Said Geingob:
<blockquote>I have to deliver the land, prosperity, it is a tall order. So, I came here to get advice because indeed I said this (President Mugabe) is my mentor.
In my thesis a long time ago, I said in Zimbabwe my brothers there had a caesarean section to deliver a baby. Cesarean section could be very painful, but they used that and I was saying when the pain stops you will deliver a healthy baby. We are already seeing the signs of that. I am told you are going to have a bumper harvest this year. The signs are already beginning to show.</blockquote>

Namibia to redistribute land following  Zimbabwe's "successful land reform programme"

The president of Namibia, Hage Geingob, has said that his country will not interfere in Zimbabwe’s affairs, telling Zimbabweans that if they felt there was a political problem in their country, they needed to themselves “Go Back and Fight”.
Namibian newspapers, The Namibian, reported yesterday that Geingob made the remarks while addressing students at Columbia University in New York. The president was responding to question from a Zimbabwean student who asked why Namibia has not spoken out against Mugabe despite the political violence and abuses in the country. This, after Botswana president Ian Khama’s recent public criticism of Mugabe.
Geingob questioned why the student believed Namibia had not spoken out:
<blockquote>Because we don’t go out in public and shout, so that you can be happy and dance in the streets of New York?
It’s for Zimbabweans to decide, not us. The rest is yours, you must go back and fight. We can’t fight for you. Therefore, we regard it as a Zimbabwean problem.
I cannot go and fight there (in Zimbabwe). We have an African way of doing things. I cannot say things to please somebody else, and say I condemn Mugabe. No, I will have a way to talk. We are sovereign countries.
What I am saying is that we differ in how we do things. We are not puppets of anybody. We had ideas to see how we go ahead to talk as Africans, our own way.</blockquote>
