A gun was found in a room at a lodge along Masotsha Ndlovu Road in Hatfield, Harare on Friday last week, while another loaded firearm was discovered on the bank of the Manyame River.
According to <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/guns-found-at-lodge-manyame-river-bank/">H-Metro</a>, the Norinco Star pistol was found in a room that had been booked by an unknown man and woman.
The owner of the lodge filed a police report after the couple did not return to claim the weapon.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) acting spokesperson in Harare Province, Assistant Inspector Faith Mapisa, said an investigation to determine ownership of the gun is currently underway. She said:

The gun was found in a black leather pouch on a couch in a room.
Circumstances are that on January 5 at around 2.45 PM, an unidentified car was reported to have dropped a man and a lady and took off.
The duo booked a room at the lodge and around 3.50 PM on the same day, they left and an employee went to clean the room.
As he was cleaning, he noticed a black pouch on the couch and saw that it was a pistol.
The cleaner put the pistol in a cardboard box and placed it in a staff bedroom expecting the owner to come back and claim it.
But no one came to claim the pistol.

Asst Insp Mapisa said a loaded rifle was recovered on the banks of Manyame River in St Mary’s on Saturday.
A Nyau dancer reportedly stumbled on the weapon which was placed between rocks and contained seven rounds.
The discovery of guns in public places is a worrisome development given the rise in armed robbery cases in recent years.
In 2022, President Emmerson Mnangagwa granted a firearms amnesty to members of the public still in possession of unregistered firearms and ammunition so they could voluntarily hand these in at any police station and face no criminal charges.
As a result, 580 firearms and 260 rounds of ammunition were surrendered to the police.
The President granted the amnesty in line with Article 12 of the SADC Protocol on the control of firearms, ammunition and related materials.

Couple Leaves Gun At A Lodge; Loaded Firearm Found At Manyame Riverbank

A Bulawayo man has been arrested for pointing his licensed gun at another following a dispute over the price of a Honda Fit fuel pump.
Posting on Twitter, police said Emmanuel Charuka (30) pointed his 9mm pistol at Maxwell Tshabalala (39) at a car parts shop leading to his arrest. Police said:

The ZRP warns firearm holders against abusing firearms to settle scores. On 05/10/22, Police in Bulawayo arrested Emmanuel Charuka (30) for pointing a firearm.
The suspect pointed a 9mm pistol at Maxwell Tshabalala (39) at a car parts shop in Kelvin North after disagreeing on the price of a Honda Fit fuel pump.
The Police have since recovered the 9mm pistol registered in the suspect’s name.

In July, police warned members of the public with licensed firearms to desist from displaying them in public.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the police had cases where some people got into shopping centres displaying firearms. He said:

We have had cases of people who are abusing their firearms. Some are giving them to their relatives who later use them to commit robberies.
Others are not securing their firearms which then land in the wrong hands later used by criminals.
We have also had cases where some people even get into shopping centres and start showing around live arms.
Others get to a stage of going to public gatherings where they start firing unnecessarily in the air, which is dangerous.

Man Brandishes Gun During Dispute Over Price Of Car Parts

Six (6) firearms were surrendered to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) on Tuesday under the presidential amnesty on voluntary surrender of firearms and ammunition.
This brings the total number of guns surrendered to the police so far to 427. ZRP said in a statement:

On 13/09/22, six firearms were voluntarily surrendered to the Police under the operation Firearms Amnesty, bringing the cumulative number of firearms surrendered, to 427 and 219 rounds of ammunition, since 08/08/22.

The presidential amnesty on voluntary surrender of firearms and ammunition, which runs from 8 August to 30 September 2022, allows holders of guns and ammunition to hand them in with no charges being laid or penalties exacted.
Announcing the presidential amnesty on the voluntary surrender of firearms and ammunition on 8 August 2022, ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said:

… the Zimbabwe Republic Police advises the public that in line with Article 12 of SADC Protocol on the control of firearms, ammunition and related materials, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, His Excellency Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa has granted an amnesty to all members of the public who are in possession of firearms and ammunition falling under the categories listed above to voluntarily surrender them to the Zimbabwe Republic Police from 8th August to 30th September 2022.
The firearms should be surrendered to any nearest Police station with the volunteer being given an official safe custody receipt to confirm that the weapon has indeed been taken over by the Police officer at the local Police station.
No criminal charges will be preferred to members of the public during this period as long as one complies with the provisions of the Presidential Amnesty.
The amnesty also covers anyone who is in possession of any weapon which was smuggled or illegally brought into the country.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police takes this opportunity to inform the public that physical checks and verifications will be conducted on all residential and business premises where illegal firearms are suspected to be.
In the same vein, all licensed firearm owners are implored to visit local Police stations and update their records in compliance with the Firearms Act Chapter 10:09.

427 Guns Surrendered To ZRP Under “Firearms Amnesty”

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has granted a presidential amnesty on voluntary surrender of firearms and ammunition as crimes such as armed robberies and other forms of crimes of passion continue to be reported in Zimbabwe. In a statement seen by Pindula News, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) also implored all licensed firearm owners to visit local Police stations and update their records. Reads the statement:

<h2>2022 PRESIDENTIAL AMNESTY ON VOLUNTARY SURRENDER OF FIREARMS AND COMPLIANCE WITH POLICE VERIFICATION EXERCISE</h2>
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has noted that some members of the public are holding on to or are in possession of firearms and ammunition yet some are not licensed or authorized to be in possession of such weapons. This has led to the current abuse of firearms in the country in clear violation of the provisions of the Firearms Act, Chapter 10:09.
Checks and records have revealed that some companies have closed yet their representatives are still holding onto firearms. Some members of licensed gun clubs are no longer active while some farmers, hunters and individuals are no longer in the same position that they were when they applied for firearm licences. On the other hand, relatives of late firearm licence holders are still holding to firearms with some of them being used to commit various crimes which include armed robbery.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has also observed that some licensed firearm holders are no longer renewing their firearm certificates or even notifying the authorities about the change in residential or business addresses to enable constant checks to be made by the Police on the status of the firearms. 
Individuals and institutions are improperly securing firearms resulting in some falling into wrong hands and being used to commit robbery and murder cases. There are some licensed gun dealers and clubs who are holding on to unclaimed firearms which were surrendered to them for safekeeping. These have not been taken by owners for a number of years.
