The late musician <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Garry_Mapanzure">Garry Mapanzure</a>‘s sister, Kudzai Mapanzure Chikwanha, has blamed the country’s dysfunctional health system for his death and pleaded for the Government’s intervention.
Garry (23) died on Friday morning after he reportedly battled for his life for 12 hours, waiting for an ambulance to arrive.
Speaking at his brother’s burial in Masvingo on Sunday, an emotional Kudzai said she believed her brother would be alive today if the country’s health system was working. <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/zimbabwes-collapsed-health-system-failed-him-says-garry-mapanzures-sister-pleads-for-governments-intervention/">NewZimbabwe.com</a> quoted Kudzai as saying::

I have one message which will not be right if I don’t say it today. The health system in Zimbabwe failed Garry. I want to say it because maybe they may hear us.
Maybe Garry would have been alive today, maybe somebody’s life or another child, maybe some other family won’t have to go through the pain we are going through. He held on for 12 hours but there was nothing in Masvingo.
To me, it just means that if anyone has a serious accident in Masvingo it is a death trap, you are dead, you are as good as dead.
Garry, I do not know what to say I never thought in my whole life that I would come here to bury Garry. No this is wrong.
People say it is God’s time but I do not believe that it was Garry’s time. If the Government can hear us, do something so that another family will not have to gather again.
Just one scan could have saved Garry just for him to look at what was going on in his brain. Just an ambulance could have taken him where he needed to go.
I asked the hospital in Masvingo they said they had no oxygen in the ambulance. Maybe something, I do not know I don’t know but I know Garry held on for 12 hours, it is not fair.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi on Sunday said the accident also claimed the lives of Langton Mandima, a male aged 27, and Kai Mapanzure, a 3-month-old male infant.

Garry Mapanzure’s Sister Says Dysfunctional Health System Failed Him

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has released more details pertaining to the road traffic accident that claimed the life of musician <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Garry_Mapanzure">Garry Mapanzure</a>, whose real name was Garikai Munashe Mapanzure.
In a statement released this Sunday 15 October, ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the accident claimed the lives of Garikai Mapanzure, a male adult aged 23, Langton Mandima, a male aged 27, and Kai Mapanzure, a 3-month-old male infant. He added:

Garry Mapanzure Accident: ZRP Releases Names Of The Other Victims

The recent death of <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Garry_Mapanzure/">Garry Mapanzure</a> has exposed the problems in Zimbabwe’s healthcare system. There are claims that the 25-year-old musician couldn’t be transferred from Masvingo to Harare for medical treatment because a service provider, Mars, required an upfront payment of US$2,900.
<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Hillary_Makaya/">Hillary Makaya</a>, a Zimbabwean model in South Africa, claimed on social media that Mars had demanded an upfront payment for transportation. She said:

I blame @mars_zimbabwe for Garry’s death! Makati mukuda 2.9k kuti muendese Mukomana ku Harare for better treatment. You were begged to take him to Harare and told mari mopihwa masvika , But makaramba muchiti ambulance haisimuke Pasina 2.9.. Garry fought for his life for 1o hours Straight! He could have lived but you deprived him of urgent medical attention.

Garry was involved in an accident in Masvingo which killed two people on the spot. He remained in the Intensive Care Unit in Masvingo for about 10 hours. However, due to the poor condition of Masvingo Provincial Hospital, he had to be transferred to Harare. Journalist Hopewell Chin’ono highlighted this issue. Commenting on Makaya’s post, Chin’ono said:

In any normal country, the first port of call in an accident is public healthcare, then you can move to private if you have the money unless if you have health insurance. This is because emergencies are not planned, hence Government services should always be on standby when needed. If you are injured today and taken to a private hospital, they will first ask for your medical insurance or cash, that is just how it works. They are doing this because there are ZANUPF politicians who have used these services and refused to pay, or deliberately don’t pay on time. The important question should be; Why would someone die for lack of a suitable ambulance in a country where citizens are paying taxes daily? Mars is not the problem, the problem is the ZANUPF Government that has refused to fix the healthcare system. I don’t think that blaming a private medical company for Government failures is the right thing.

Several people agreed with Chin’ono adding that there was the need to respect businesses’ policies. Some argued that the policies were probably a result of losses incurred when patients did not pay after receiving services.  
Recently, a Zimbabwean doctor, Mthabisi Nembaware, died at Mutare Hospital while waiting for an ambulance to be airlifted to Harare. Dr. Nembaware, who had been working at a rural hospital in Hauna, Manicaland, was involved in a road accident while travelling to Mutare. Despite being stabilised at Mutare Hospital for severe Traumatic Brain Injury, the hospital allegedly lacked a functional ICU unit and city-to-city ambulance service. Thus, he needed to be transferred to Harare for specialized care via air ambulance.
Critics of the government accuse political elites of looting funds that should have been allocated to the health sector. They argue that the politicians show little concern for the healthcare system as they can afford to seek medical treatment abroad. The collapse of the healthcare sector has been ongoing since the early 2000s.

Pindula News Removal Of A Post About The Alleged Death Of Garry Mapanzure

Zimbabwean musician <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Garry_Mapanzure/">Garry Mapanzure</a> born Garikai Munashe Mapanzure is reportedly in critical condition following a road traffic accident on the Beitbridge-Masvingo Highway in Masvingo. The incident occurred when a vehicle turning into Clipsham Views residential area collided with another vehicle coming from Beitbridge. Mapanzure was a passenger in the car driven by his sister, and sadly, his nephew (his sister’s son) lost his life immediately, while Mapanzure sustained critical injuries.
The accident also involved Langton Madima, a student from <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Great_Zimbabwe_University/">Great Zimbabwe University (GZU)</a> and the President of the GZU Students Representative Council, who unfortunately died at the scene. Distressing images from the accident site revealed the mangled wreckage of a maroon Toyota Vitz vehicle, beyond repair, while the other vehicle involved, a grey car, was positioned further down the road.

Garry Mapanzure gained popularity with his 2017 single “Wapunza” featuring his brother Victor Mapanzure. He further released the single “Moyo Muti” in February 2018. Garry was selected for Mr Eazi’s #EMPAWA100 program after his song “Truth or Dare” gained attention. Through this program, he released the track “Slow.” In July 2019, Garry released the single “Your Man.” He later signed a deal with Runabeat Music in January 2020, which serves as an agency for reggae, dancehall, and afrobeats musicians.
In addition to his music career, Garry launched a clothing line called African Sushi Wear in 2021. The line includes various products like T-shirts, hoodies, and sweaters, which are available for purchase through his online store.
Regrettably, this incident marks the third tragic accident to deeply sadden the people of Zimbabwe this week.
