The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has set 09 January 2024 as the opening day for Form One classes at public boarding schools.
In a circular seen by <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/new-form-one-classes-to-begin-january-9-2024">The Sunday Mail</a>, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Moses Mhike, said all heads of boarding schools are expected to abide by the enrolment policy of all boarders seeking Form One placement. He said:
<blockquote>
As the ministry strives to remain committed to the provision of quality, affordable, accessible, inclusive and wholesome education for all Zimbabweans, no boarding school is allowed to administer Form One entrance tests.
Due to limited boarding spaces in schools, those pupils who will not be successful on the boarding placement are expected to access education in day secondary schools.
</blockquote>
Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education spokesperson Taungana Ndoro said that all learners who wish to enroll at the boarding schools are to register on the ministry’s electronic platform from November 1 to January 15, 2024.
Successful applicants will be notified through text messages by the respective school heads when the 2023 Grade Seven public examination results are released.

Form One Classes At Public Boarding Schools To Begin On 09 January, 2024

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has reassured parents and guardians that there are adequate Form One places to absorb all pupils that wrote the Grade Seven public examinations this year.
This comes as parents and guardians across the country have started scrambling for Form One places for their children ahead of the 2023 First Term.
Those seeking boarding school places are applying online while parents that intend to enroll their children as day schoolers are physically visiting the schools.
Primary and Secondary Education Ministry communication and advocacy director Taungana Ndoro told State media that there is no shortage of Form One places in the country. He said:
<blockquote>
We don’t have a crisis in terms of Form One places. We have more than enough schools for Form One places, particularly day schools. No learner will fail to get a Form One place for 2023.
</blockquote>
He said parents and guardians were creating an artificial shortage of Form One places by bypassing schools in their neighbourhoods and targetting certain schools said to be producing good results. Said Ndoro:
<blockquote>
For instance, you might have a parent living in Nketa suburb but wants his or her child enrolled at a school in Barham Green suburb which is said to be good.
The onus is on the parents to improve the standards of local schools so that at the end of the day the schools offer quality education.
</blockquote>
Ndoro noted that the country does not have enough boarding schools to absorb all learners seeking places. He said:

Pupils with six to nine units do not struggle to get enrolled even at boarding schools but those with lower grades find it difficult as priority is given to those with good grades.

There Is No Shortage Of Form One Places - Ndoro

The online platform (<a href="http://www.emap.co.zw/" rel="nofollow">www.emap.co.zw)</a> for enrolling Form One boarders for the 2023 First Term is already underway, a government official has said.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/form-one-enrolment-in-progress/">H-Metro</a>, Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education spokesperson, Taungana Ndoro, said parents will be able to make applications on the electronic platform from 1 November to 31 December. He said:
<blockquote>
Parents or guardians who wish to send their children to boarding schools are advised to start applying through the e-platform with effect from November 1 up to 31 December 2022.
An applicant, who has been offered a place at one school, will not be eligible to apply or be considered for a place at any other school unless the offer is declined.
All applicants will be allowed to make a maximum of five active applications at any given time.
Successful applicants will be notified through short message service by the respective school heads.

Once you apply to a school, your application can show any one of the following statuses:
<ul>
<li>Pending – application still under consideration</li>
<li>Accepted – you have been offered a place.</li>
<li>Processed – once a particular school has accepted your Child, all the other outstanding schools’ statuses will automatically be changed to processed.</li>
<li>Rejected – your application was unsuccessful</li>
</ul>
Once you decline an offer, there is no guarantee that you will get the same offer back.

Form One Online Enrolment For 2023 In Progress

Parents of Form One pupils on Monday implored the government to intervene and stop school authorities from forcing them to buy school uniforms only from the schools where their children are enrolled.
Concerned parents who spoke to NewsDay said most schools enrolled students on condition they purchased uniforms from them, with the many sets of uniforms overpriced and putting them under heavy financial strain.
Most boarding schools are reportedly charging between US$400 and US$600 for complete sets of school uniforms, prices which are far much higher than the average prices on the open market.
However, a school head who spoke to the publication on condition of anonymity defended the practice, saying it enhanced uniformity at schools. The school head was quoted as saying:
<blockquote>Supplying uniforms at schools is done to ensure that pupils don’t bring their own undesirable attires which are not part of the recommended school uniform. That is why we engage suppliers so that they provide standard uniforms.
If we allow pupils to buy uniforms on their own, each one of them will bring their own desired brands, which may be different in colour and style, and then we will end up having many uniforms at one school.</blockquote>
Zimbabwe National Teachers’ Union (ZINATU) chief executive officer, Manuel Nyawo said it was unfair that school authorities were selling uniforms in United States dollars when teachers were being paid Zimbabwe dollars.
Nyawo took a swipe at unscrupulous and corrupt school heads who he said were conniving with local uniform suppliers to force desperate parents to buy uniforms from their schools.
