Russia has overtaken China to become Zimbabwe’s second major source of imports, behind South Africa, according to statistics released by the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT).
Three countries, that is, South Africa (34.7%), the Russian Federation (15.2%) and China (11.9%), accounted for around sixty-two percent of Zimbabwe’s total import value of US$901.5 million in October 2023.
Below are the trade statistics released by ZIMSTAT this Monday, 27 November:
External Trade Statistics: October 2023 – The total value of exported goods in October 2023 was US$831.9 million, representing a 22.7% increase from US$678.1 million reported in September 2023.
Imports for October: 2023 amounted to US$901.5 million, an increase of 16.7% from US$772.2 million recorded in September 2023.
The trade deficit for October 2023 was US$69.6 million, translating to a 26.4% decline from the deficit of US$94.6 million recorded in September 2023.
Sept 2023 exports value = USD678.1 million Oct 2023’s exports value = USD831.9 million. Among the country’s major export destinations in October 2023 were China (38.4%,) and the United Arab Emirates (22.8%), South Africa (16.3%).
The three countries accounted for around seventy-seven percent of the total export value of USD831.9 million.
Sept 2023 imports value = USD772.7 million Oct 2023 imports value = USD901.5 million.
Zimbabwe’s major source countries of imports in October 2023 were South Africa (34.7%), the Russian Federation (15.2%) and China (11.9%).

South Africa, Russia, China Account For Over 60% Of Zimbabwe's Imports

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has clarified a recent directive by the Minister of Finance and Economic Development Mthuli Ncube on the use of foreign exchange from the 25% surrender portion of export proceeds.
In a statement issued on 29 May 2023, Ncube said that with effect from 01 June 2023, Treasury will fund the Zimbabwe Dollar component of the 25% foreign currency surrendered by exporters.
Ncube also said that the foreign currency collected from the 25% that is surrendered, will now be collected by Treasury and utilised in servicing the foreign currency loans assumed from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe.
RBZ Governor John Mangudya on Wednesday said notwithstanding the statement by Ncube, the management of foreign exchange from export receipts will continue to go through the normal banking channels.
A statement issued by Mangudya on 31 May titled “Operational Modalities for the Management of the Surrender Portion of Export Proceeds” reads:

Further to the Press Statement issued by the Hon Minister of Finance and Economic Development on 29 May 2023 on the use of foreign exchange from the 25% surrender portion of export proceeds, the Bank wishes to advise the public that the management of foreign exchange from export receipts will continue to go through the normal banking channels with the Bank playing the pivotal statutory role of intermediation between banks and the Exchequer.
In that regard, the Minister’s Press Statement is not intended to change the statutory requirements or merge fiscal and monetary policy jurisdictions.
The essence of the new measures is that Government is now actualizing the provisions of the Finance Act No. 7 of 2021, which, inter alia, provide for the take-over of external loans on the Bank’s books.
Government will provide the local currency required to purchase foreign exchange from part of the surrender portion of export proceeds for the purposes of servicing the external loans assumed by the State.
Government will alternatively use own foreign exchange resources to settle the said assumed foreign loans.
The Bank shall therefore ensure that all foreign currency arrangements, entered into by and between both local and foreign financial institutions and the Republic of Zimbabwe, are fully respected and loan obligations are serviced in accordance with the covenants of the respective underlying facilities or commitments.
This will ensure financial system stability and that there are no disruptions in the financial markets.
The Bank shall meet the Bankers Association of Zimbabwe and the Accountant General to agree on ways to ensure that the modalities envisaged in the policy measures are seamless, flawless and in line with best practice.

FULL TEXT: RBZ Statement On The Surrender Portion Of Export Proceeds

Zimbabwe registered a 9% increase in the value of total exports in May 2021 from the total export earnings in April 2021.
The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (Zimstat) attributed the growth to tobacco export earnings as the tobacco selling season started in April 2021. Zimstat said:
<blockquote>The value of total exports in May 2021 was US$486.8 million, signifying a marked increase of 9.5% from total export earnings in April 2021, at US$444.7 million.
The increase in total export earnings in May 2021 was attributed to tobacco export earnings as the tobacco selling season started in April 2021.
During the same period, imports increased slightly by 2.6% to US$503.1 million from US$490.1 million in April 2021.
Consequently, this resulted in a reduced trade deficit of US$16.2 million in May 2021, compared to US$45.5 million in April 2021.
Zimbabwe’s main exports during May 2021 were nickel mattes, ores and concentrates (38.6%), semi-manufactured gold (16.1%) and these minerals constituted a total of (54.7%) in total export earnings.
As the 2020-2021 tobacco selling season commenced, tobacco exports shot up to 21.8 % in May 2021 from 9.1 % in April 2021.
Main imports in May 2021 were machinery (15.5%), fuels (12.6%), cereals (5.7%) and pharmaceuticals (3.7%).
In 2021, maize excluding seed imports declined from a peak of 7.1% in February to 3.0% in April and 1.9% in May.</blockquote>

Zimbabwe's Export Earnings Rose By 9% In May

The total value of Zimbabwe’s exports in November 2020 rose by 20.3 per cent from the previous month, official statistics reveal.
According to the Zimbabwe National Statistic Agency (Zimstat), the total value of the country’s exports in November 2020 was US$528.9 million, an increase from $439.4 million in October of the same year.
Imports also increased in November, albeit, by 4.0% to US$509.7 million from US$490.2 million in October 2020. Zimstat said in a statement:
<blockquote>The value of total exports in November 2020 was US$528.9 million. This was an increase of 20.3% from the value of total exports in October 2020, which was about US$439.4 million.
During the same period (November 2020), imports increased slightly by 4.0% to US$509.7 million from US$490.2 million in October 2020.</blockquote>
Zimstat also revealed that Zimbabwe’s trade balance has been positive in November 2020 due to large quantities of tobacco exports.
<blockquote>While a positive trade balance was maintained for the four months in a row, at the end of 2019, the trade balance has been positive as well in November 2020 due to large quantities of tobacco exports.</blockquote>
Balance of trade (BOT) is the difference between the value of a country’s exports and the value of a country’s imports for a given period.
A positive BOT is when the value of a country’s exports exceeds the value of its imports for a given period.

Value Of Exports Rose To US$528.9 In Nov. 2020 - Zimstat

The Zimbabwe National Statics Agency (Zimstat) says the value of total exports in January 2020 fell by 18.7% from December 2019.
During the same period, imports fell by 8.4% maintaining a positive trade balance for the fourth month in a row. In a statement posted on Twitter, Zimstat said:
<blockquote>Trade data statistics are out. The value of total exports in January 2020 was US$397.7 million. This was an 18.7% fall from the value of total exports in December 2019, which was US$489.1 million.
During the same period, imports declined by 8.4% to US$383.6 million from US$418.8 million in December 2019.
While a positive trade balance was maintained for the fourth month in a row, it reduced by 79.9% from US$70.2 million in December 2019 to US$14.1 million in January 2020.</blockquote>

Total Value Of Exports & Imports Fell In January 2020 - Zimstat

The country’s trade deficit shrunk 37 per cent in October last year to $144 million after total exports increased by 25 per cent to $449 million largely driven by a 300 per cent vault in tobacco shipments.
Between January and September 2018, exports amounted to $3,79 billion, against $3,44 billion recorded during the same period in 2017. Imports in the same period rose to $5,87 billion from $4,86 billion in 2016.
Cotton exports, which grew by 34 per cent and nickel shipments, which increased by 26 per cent, also contributed to the significant decrease in the trade deficit, offsetting the weighty 44 per cent fall in gold exports.
In its monthly report, for October the RBZ said:
<blockquote>Export growth was, in large part, underpinned by the substantial increase in exports of flue-cured tobacco (302,8 per cent); cotton (33,9 per cent); and nickel ores (25,8 per cent).
On the back of the substantial increase in merchandise exports, the country’s trade deficit improved by 37,4 per cent, from $230,9 million in September 2018 to $144,4 million in October 2018.</blockquote>
The report further reveals that the country’s main export markets during the month of October 2018 were South Africa, (63,2 per cent); Mozambique (10,1); the United Arab Emirates, (9,8); Zambia (1,5); Belgium (1,4); Botswana (0,6) and Kenya (0,5).

Zim Trade Deficit Shrinks By 37 Per Cent, Buoyed By Increased Tobacco Exports

Latest data from the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (Zimstat) show the country’s exports increased by 46 percent to $329,6 million in the first four months of the year compared to $225,6 million during the same period.
Month-on-month export figures in April improved by 14,2 percent to $329,6 million from $288,6 million in March this year. Exports were largely agricultural produce and minerals while the imports included woven fabric, synthetic fibre, canvas and ornamental trimmings among others.
Last month, Zimbabwe exported  $149,4 million worth of goods up from $120,9 million in March. Zimbabwe imported  capital goods such as vehicles, medical and surgical apparatus as well as electrical equipment such as electric accumulators from South Africa.

Zimbabwe Exports Up To $329,6 Million In The First Four Months

According to the latest data from the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (Zimstat), Zimbabwe’s trade deficit stood at $1.01 billion in the first five months of the year compared to $1.12 billion over the same period last year.
Statistics show that Zimbabwe lost more importing than it made in exports. The data shows that imports stood at $2.14 billion while exports amounted to $1.13 billion. Major exports included semi-processed gold worth $320 million, flue cured tobacco worth $229 million, ferrochrome worth $148 million, nickel ore and concentrates for $143 million, diamonds $34 million and nickel matters $20 million. Imports included diesel ($318 million), unleaded petrol ($161 million), electrical energy ($76 million), durum wheat ($46 million), among others.

Zimbabwe registers $1 billion trade deficit in 5 months

Speaking during a church service in Bulawayo on Saturday, Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) deputy governor Dr Kupukile Mlambo said that the growth of exports and production is the only solution for the foreign currency shortages which he said date back to 1960.
Said Mlambo:
<blockquote>We want exports and production to grow; that’s the only solution for our situation. The scarcity of foreign currency dates back to 1960 and we are operating with added deficits accumulated since 2009. The solution to Zimbabwe’s problem is not to adopt the Rand as the business people are saying, because the Rand is still foreign currency just like the US Dollar. Our major problem is that we do not export enough to be able to sustain the economy hence the cash crisis we are in. As RBZ, we do not print the US dollar and the only solution we came up with was to set up facilities to foster and promote production.”</blockquote>
He said that RBZ was introducing packages include a women’s empowerment fund worth $15 million, $10 million for business linkages and another $10 million for horticulture to generate exports and foreign currency.

RBZ gives solution to foreign currency shortages it says date back to 1960

Figures released by the Zimbabwe Statistical Agency (ZimStat) show that Zimbabwe imported food and beverages worth $64m, down 2% from the previous month, mainly for household and industry consumption.
Cumulatively to October, the country imported food and beverages worth $514 million with the country importing maize worth $36m, up 22% from the month of September. It also imported wheat and non-alcoholic beverages worth $5m and $2,2m respectively. However, in the period under review, the country’s trade deficit narrowed to $151m, as exports increased by 27% from September to $318m.
Exports grew 27% in October compared to the previous month, while imports rose by 6% to $470m. Some of the exports include beef, tobacco and other agricultural produce as well as wines, minerals and scrap metal. South Africa was the biggest source market for imports, with $210m worth of products followed by Singapore with $81m.
