The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_National_Parks_and_Wildlife_Authority/">Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZIMPARKS)</a> has said a significant number of elephants from Hwange National Park, the largest national park in Zimbabwe, are migrating to Botswana in search of water.
The park, spanning over 14,600 square kilometres, is a habitat for approximately 50,000 elephants. This movement of animals from Hwange National Park to Botswana began in August. ZIMPARKS spokesperson, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Tinashe_Farawo/">Tinashe Farawo</a>, told AFP:
<blockquote>
Many animals have and are moving from Hwange National Park into Botswana.
Water bodies have dried up and the animals are in search for water and food.
</blockquote>
He added that buffaloes and “all types of animals present in the park” were also migrating in scores. Farawo said:
<blockquote>
I can’t quantify how many elephants have moved whether its hundreds or thousands but it has been a lot.
The amount of animals migrating has definitely increased over the years due to the increase in water shortages.
</blockquote>
Climate change has caused an early migration of wildlife from Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park to Botswana, according to the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority. This movement, which could result in heightened conflicts between humans and animals, poses challenges as animals encroach upon populated areas in search of water.
Tinashe Farawo expressed concerns about increased competition for water resources. Human-wildlife conflicts are already prevalent in remote parts of Zimbabwe, with elephants alone causing the deaths of at least 60 people last year. Zimbabwe has an elephant population of around 100,000, while Botswana boasts the world’s largest elephant population, estimated at 130,000.

Elephants From Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park Migrating To Botswana Due To Water Scarcity

An elephant reportedly killed a pregnant woman in Muzarabani this week. This was revealed by Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority Tinashe Farawo who shared the unfortunate news in a tweet that said:
<blockquote>It is with great sadness that a 37year old pregnant woman was killed by an elephant in Muzarabani District. <a data-focusable="true" dir="ltr" href="https://twitter.com/Zimparks" role="link">@Zimparks </a>rangers from Nyamaneche on the ground tracking the problem elephant.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, elephants were reportedly destroying <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/elephants-terrorize-beitbridge-residents/">Beitbridge’s crops</a> threatening to wipe out the region’s expected bumper harvest according to officials and villagers who spoke to different publications last month.
Zimbabwe is <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zimparks-lament-elephant-overpopulation/">battling an elephant overpopulation,</a> at some point last year Zimbabwe had an elephant population of 88 000 against the country’s carrying capacity of 55 000 which according to authorities increases the chances of human and wildlife interactions which can be dangerous.

Elephant Kills Pregnant Woman In Muzarabani

Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority (ZimParks) has lamented the elephants’ overpopulation particularly at Hwange National Park which has a carrying capacity of 15 000 elephants but is currently dealing with a population of between 45 000 and 53 000 jumbos, The Sunday News reports.
This was revealed by ZimParks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo who said;
<blockquote>We are battling an over population of this species, against an ecological carrying capacity of around 15 000 we are talking of between 45 000 and 53 000 between Hwange-Matesti block. For years this has been the problem and the threat now is vegetation which is their food and habitat loss for these and other animals in the park,
The biggest threat to these animals is loss of habitat. They (elephants) are destroying other animal’s habitats such as bird species which can only live and breed in certain tree heights. Elephants have a tendency of knocking down trees as they reach for food and when they do that they affect a lot of other animals in the park.</blockquote>
ZimParks at some point said it was <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/04/14/zimbabwe-mulling-introducing-birth-control-pills-for-elephants/">considering elephant birth control</a> as they revealed they have a carrying capacity of 55 000 but the elephant population had surpassed 88 000.
Farawo said the overpopulation was increasing the human and wildlife interactions which might be fatal in some instances.

ZimParks Lament Elephant Overpopulation

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management has lamented the ballooning elephants’ population saying it is now affecting the natural environment as populations continue to soar the Chronicle reports.
Speaking to the Chronicle, ZimParks Director-General Mr Fulton Mangwanya said:
<blockquote>….We are also still grappling with over population of elephants as a country where we have over 83 000 against an ecological capacity of 55 000.
This causes serious disaster in terms of habitat destruction because elephants destroy vegetation, which will never recover as populations continue to rise,</blockquote>
According to the Director-General, <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/11/09/115-elephants-die-at-hwange-national-park-due-to-drought-report/">the death of close to 200 elephants at Hwange national park</a> this year was mainly due to the overpopulation due to depletion of natural resources that sustains life in these parks.
