A recent notice sent out to prospective undergraduate students at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Zimbabwe shows the cost of a university education in the country.
According to the notice, student pay amounts ranging from US $500 to $650 depending on their undergraduate degree program.

<h2>Accommodation Fees</h2>
The notice did not include accommodation fees. However some research shows that NUST offers On-Campus accommodation at $7 (single rooms) and $6 (sharing rooms) a day. The fee includes 3 meals a day. 
A semester is at least 4 months so this works out to about $800 a semester for accommodation.
Off-Campus accommodation is also offered at the recently built Old Mutual Student Complex and this goes for $90 a month, but does not include any meals. Students have to arrange meals for themselves.
Since the Old Mutual Student Complex belongs to Old Mutual, fees are paid to the company directly.

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/National_University_of_Science_and_Technology/">NUST</a> is one of the most prestigious universities in Zimbabwe, along with the University of Zimbabwe. It is located in Bulawayo, the second largest city in the country.
Over the years, there have been complaints by students and their families that the cost of a university education in Zimbabwe is too high, given the state of the economy.

The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Zimbabwe charges students between $500 and $650 for a semester, depending on the program they are studying. There are additional fees for studios, clinics, and locations. On-campus accommodation costs about $800 a semester, while off-campus options are also available. NUST is a prestigious university in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Some people think the cost of education in Zimbabwe is too high because of the economy.

Two videos of a bullying attack on a boy identified as Zimbabwean in the UK has gone viral on social media. The bullying incident itself is said to have happened this week, in a place called Carlisle, Cumbria in the UK. 
In the two videos that were <a href="https://twitter.com/Oluomoofderby/status/1768752973042037239/">posted on Twitter</a>, a white boy rushes to the Zimbabwean boy and punches him several times, pushes him, and then asks him “Get on your knees and kiss my shoes”.
The visibly frightened victim gives in.

As the incident happens it seems there are several onlookers commenting and some of them laughing. It is not clear who recorded the video. The bully was not in school uniform so it is also unclear if he is a student at the same school as the Zimbabwean boy.
One source has told Pindula that he’s familiar with people known to the boy and that they are Zimbabwean. He also said that people close to the situation have suggested that the boy has always been bullied at school because of his visibly strong Zimbabwean accent.
<h2>Arrest of the bully</h2>

<h2>Racism or just Bullying?</h2>
As the video circulated, there have been arguments on social media with some claiming it’s just regular bullying, while others said it’s a race issue.
The bully is a white boy. The Zimbabwean victim is an African.
The Twitter user who posted the videos, Olumo of Derby, commented:

“Racism in the UK is getting worse everyday. A black child was racially abused and beaten up today at St John Henry Newman Catholic School in Carlisle. Are black people not safe in Carlisle?”
</blockquote>
Another user commented:
<blockquote>
Was this racially motivated or was it just a horrible bully picking on a class mate? I see many videos of black kids beating up white kids, I never immediately jump to racism.

And another who claims to live in Carlisle posted:

I live in Carlisle and have done my whole life. I one hundred percent believe that this is racist. Carlisle is stuck in the 70s with regards to race, gender equality and so on. I feel awful for this boy. But almost worse for the bully because his parents are poisoning him.

There has been increased migration of Zimbabweans to the UK since the 2000, with many seeking greener pastures. Zimbabwe has seen at least 2 prolonged periods of hyperinflation and is currently in the middle of one. Professionals in the health sector have migrated the most in recent years especially following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Seven teachers’ unions have petitioned the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Cain Mathema, to defer the reopening of schools until the novel coronavirus is effectively contained.
In a petition addressed to Mathema on Tuesday, the teachers put forward 15 demands that they want the government to meet to guarantee their safety.
The petition was signed by the Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ), Amalgamated Rural Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe (Artuz), Zimbabwe Teachers’ Association, Zimbabwe Democratic Teachers’ Union, Zimbabwe National Teachers’ Union, Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe National Educators’ Union. It read in part:
<blockquote>We, the undersigned teachers’ unions in Zimbabwe, therefore, urge the government to ensure that coronavirus is totally brought under control before the opening of schools.</blockquote>
Among other things, the teachers demanded that the government fumigate all schools before they reopen and ensure that all pupils and teachers be retested at regular intervals. They wrote:
<blockquote>Fumigate all schools before schools open and at regular intervals thereafter. Schools that are currently used as quarantine centres should go through rigorous fumigation and confirmed safe by the Health and Child Care ministry.
Ensure the testing of all pupils and teachers and provision of the same at regular intervals, pay risk allowances to teachers as in essence they are frontline workers in the education system.</blockquote>
The government has since revealed that Ordinary Level and Advanced Levels pupils will start the June 2020 examinations on the 29th of June, with lessons for all classes set to resume in a staggered approach in the next few weeks.

7 Teachers' Unions Petition Govt Over Schools Reopening

An <a href="https://newzwire.live/opinion-too-many-managers-too-few-workers-zimbabwe-has-an-artisan-shortage-and-its-time-to-fix-it/">opinion on business news publication</a>, newZWire says Zimbabwe has a shortage of artisans but abundant managers. The article says many artisans have gone to other countries and some of them are aging, and that this has been worsened by the country’s focus on training managers instead of artisans.
Says the article, which was penned by Engineer Jacob Mutisi:
<blockquote>According to Zimstat, Zimbabwe had 93 714 university students as at August 2017, but only 25 952 polytechnic students. Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital city, has six universities but only one polytechnic.
Zimbabwe’s national policy, it seems, is focusing only on producing managers, without the workforce required to do the practical work.
There is now a need to relook at the national policy, so that it focuses on introducing more vocational institutions. To kick-start Zimbabwe’s economy, we now need to fully introduce apprentices and artisan programs.
This strategy was used by Ian Douglas Smith to build Rhodesia during the white regime’s sixteen-year rule. NRZ, Air Zimbabwe, Hwange, Ziscosteel and Shabanie Mashaba Mines are all products of apprenticeship and artisanship programs. Today, these institutions are battling to survive because Zimbabwe did not continue producing the workforce they needed to keep up with the exodus of skills to regional and international markets.</blockquote>

Nedbank Announces Scholarships STEM Students

A 3rd year female medical student at Midlands State University, Lynette Ndlovu, has been elected President of the Federation of African Medical Students’ Association (FAMSA) becoming the first-ever female president from Southern Africa since the birth of the organisation in 1968.
Selection criteria was based on academic merit, sound leadership skills, and community service.
Said the Midlands State University in a statement:
<blockquote>Lynette Ndlovu has worked tirelessly over the years on her way to election in various capacities all the while, reaffirming her leadership skills, commitment and dedication towards empowering African communities. 2018 was a notable year for the University’s medical students as seven students were selected to be part of the inaugural Southern African boot camp on female reproduction including HIV/AIDS held in Malawi.
Ndlovu together with Nobert Mashoko represented Midlands State University and the country exceptionally well and this resulted in the birth of Youth Against Aids [YAA] sessions in high schools in the Midlands province through the ZiMSA standing committee.

MSU Female Student Becomes President Of African Medical Students Body

The 32.83% pass rate registered in the 2018 Zimsec O’ Level results announced yesterday are the best in over a decade. Zimsec considers it a pass if a candidate attains a grade “C” or better in 5 or more subjects.

32.8% O' Level Pass Rate The Highest In Over A Decade

In an interview with The Chronicle yesterday, Primary and Secondary Education Permanent Secretary Mrs Tumisang Thabela  dismissed as fake a document showing a shortlist of recruited primary school teachers submitted to the Public Service Commission (PSC).
According to the document, the Primary and Secondary Education Ministry shortlisted 1 576 teachers for recruitment. Thabela said her ministry does not communicate via social media. She also said recruitment is ongoing. Said Thabela:

I haven’t submitted any list anywhere. There are issues that have to be looked into but we are in the pipeline, am yet to get a briefing on how far the process has gone.</blockquote>

Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Paul Mavima has told teachers that the government is not in a position to increase their salaries as it has too many challenges which need to be sorted. Mavima highlighted that the government is working on fixing obsolete structures and a shortage of teachers. Speaking at the National Association of Primary School Heads (NAPH) conference in Victoria Falls, Mavima said,

We also have a deficit of 12 000 teachers, while 20 000 are unemployed, so those in the system must try to make do with what is there…The economy is currently not allowing for us to employ and increase salaries. Teachers have dismissed the government’s offer of a pay increment of 17.5 percent for civil servants. The teachers argue that the government is failing to prioritise its resources as it has managed to fork out money to purchase vehicles for traditional chiefs. Said Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe secretary-general Raymond Majongwe,

Teachers Say 17.5 Pay Increase Is A Betrayal Of Workers, Cite Cars Bought For Chiefs

Author and filmmaker Tsitsi Dangarembga’s novel Nervous Conditions has been named in BBC Culture’s “The 100 Stories that shaped the world.” Nervous Conditions is ranked 66th on the list which was compiled by writers across the globe. According to BBC Culture,

Tsitsi Dangarembga's Nervous Conditions Named In "100 Stories That Shaped The World"

Teachers are reported to have rejected the government’s offer for a 10 percent pay increment demanding at least 30 percent instead. The teachers have been threatening to go on strike when the second term which started today (Tuesday) begins. However, they have agreed to continue negotiating with the government in order to reach an amicable solution.
Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe’s Takavafira Zhou told NewsDay,
<blockquote>The meeting is still on and we need to give dialogue a chance. If they are sincere about this dialogue process, the teachers are willing to listen and come up with a solution that ensures they are also able to live decent lives. However, if this engagement is a way to hoodwink us, it will be difficult to convince teachers not to go ahead with the strike.</blockquote>

Teachers Reject 10 Percent Pay Increase But Agree To Continue Negotiations

In an interview with The Chronicle, Primary and Secondary Education Permanent Secretary Sylvia Utete-Masango said Government will meet teachers’ unions this week to start negotiations on a number of issues they raised which include vacation leave and allowances.
She said the teachers will negotiate with the National Joint Negotiating Council (NJNC). Said Utete-Masango:
<blockquote>The NJNC is mandated with the responsibility of addressing some of the issues that the teachers are raising. A meeting will be held between the teachers and the NJNC this week to map the way forward. We’ll keep our ears on the ground and follow the proceedings.</blockquote>

Govt To Meet Teachers To Start Negotiations

In a press statement, the Zimbabwe Teachers Association has insisted that its members will be on strike as planned until their grievances are addressed.  The teachers insisted that they will not be intimidated by government officials to stop them from exercising their Constitutional rights.  We publish the statement below in full.
<blockquote>1. The Zimbabwe Teachers’ Association (ZIMTA) hereby categorically states that no amount of threats or illegal declarations from individuals in government will stop or intimidate teachers from exercising their Constitutional and legal right to participate in the industrial Job action.
2. For the avoidance of doubt, members must not be intimidated or threatened by service Ministers’ such as Professor Paul Mavima, whose Ministry has been on record as not having the mandate to address workers’ conditions of service because they are not the employer.
3. We also believe that the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and the Minister also abide by the same Zimbabwean Constitution which teachers subscribe to, and which gives workers the right to withdraw their labour, wherever and whenever working conditions are nowhere near satisfactory.
4. Threats and allegations that link collective job action to political parties are just unfortunate and meant to strangle and suppress workers’ rights in a democratic country such as Zimbabwe.
5. ZIMTA wishes to remind the education Minister Professor Paul Mavima that Unions in education exist for the sole mandate of representing the welfare of members and are in no way; a rival to political parties or to him as a head of a service Ministry. Maybe (sic) guided accordingly.

Full Text: Teachers Insist They Will Go On With Strike, Say We Will Not Be Threatened

Teachers today took to the streets of the capital and marched from Zimta House to Causeway Building to protest against poor pay. The educators joined doctors who have been on strike for the past 27 days protesting against inadequate allowances and lack of essential drugs and equipment.
The teachers are demanding:

<li>100% salary increment</li>
<li>75% increment on rural allowance</li>
<li>50% increment on housing, transport allowances</li>
<li>safety of teachers in schools during elections</li>
<li>restoration of vacation leave</li>
</ul>
The teachers have threatened to go on strike when schools open for the second term in May 2018 if their demands are not met by the government.

NUST Accepted Students 2018 Intake

Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Professor Paul Mavima has said that the country needs to build at least another 2056 new schools for education to be accessible to everyone. However, the minister said that he expects 100 new schools to be built this calendar year as well as 66 laboratories which will be added to the already existing schools.
Speaking at the handover the Zimbabwe-China Friendship High School in Hatcliffe which was built by the Chinese government, Mavhima said:
<blockquote>According to a survey, the ministry undertook in 2013, we are in need of 2056 new schools throughout the country. Additionally, infrastructure in the form of science laboratories, technical and vocational workshops and any child facilities are needed,
Without adequate infrastructure, it will result in education being inaccessible.</blockquote>
Deputy Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, Zhaong Baogang said:
<blockquote>This is a very densely populated community, so many people live here and there are so many houses so I believe this was the right choice to build a school here.</blockquote>

Zimbabwe Needs 2056 New Schools, 100 To Be Built This year: Minister Mavima

Awake Unto Righteousness International Ministries founder Admire Mugwinyi, who studied Agricultural Engineering (Bioresources Engineering) at the University of Zimbabwe in 2007 had three of his science textbooks approved by South Africa’s Basic Education minister Angie Motshekga and are now used in 27 000 schools there.
He compiled and published three Physical Sciences textbooks for South Africa’s Grades 10, 11 and 12 (Form 3-6) CAPS UPDATED, and is currently compiling Maths and Life Sciences textbooks. When contacted for comment by NewsDay, Mugwinyi said that he hoped his books would be integrated into the Zimbabwean education system. Said Mugwinyi:
<blockquote>Teachers and students say my books simplify concepts and, as a result, they make Physical Sciences easy to understand even by struggling students. I wish my books could find their way into the Zimbabwean curriculum, so that they may also help my fellow kinsman the same way they are helping South Africans. Due to public demand, I am busy writing Maths and Life Sciences for the same grades. I am planning to record educational videos and applications for high school Maths and Science subjects in the next five years.</blockquote>

Zim engineer publishes science textbooks for SA high schools

Bulawayo Metropolitan Senator Dorothy Khumalo (MDC) is seeking to block the government’s move to close School Development Committees and to transfer all the funds to the government controlled School Services Fund. Khumalo said the move would collapse the education system as the Zanu-PF led government would raid the account to finance the 2018 elections.
Said Khumalo:
<blockquote>There is a feeling that the ministry wants to raid these SSF funds for political expediency, especially as we go to the 2018 elections, and the pronouncement by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education that the monies can be channelled to build new schools in rural constituencies adds weight to this thinking.
We are worried that the latest directive will have unintended consequences, which may negatively affect the quality of education at all government schools.</blockquote>
