Former United States President Donald Trump has been briefed by U.S. intelligence about specific threats from Iran regarding an assassination attempt against him, according to his campaign.
In a statement, the campaign said the Republican presidential candidate was briefed “regarding real and specific threats from Iran to assassinate him in an effort to destabilize and sow chaos in the United States”.
The campaign, however, did not clarify whether these threats were new or previously reported.
Trump campaign communications director Steven Cheung said in the statement:

Intelligence officials have identified that these continued and coordinated attacks have heightened in the past few months.
Law enforcement officials across all agencies are working to ensure President Trump is protected and the election is free from interference.

This follows an assassination attempt on Trump on July 13, during which he was injured and another person was killed at a rally in Pennsylvania.
Afterwards, U.S. officials reportedly received intelligence about an alleged Iranian plot against him, which Iranian officials denied.
Then September 15, a Secret Service agent fired upon spotting a rifle poking through a fence at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach. The agent opened fire as Trump was playing a round of golf.
Ryan Wesley Routh, a man arrested near the golf course, was charged with attempting to assassinate a presidential candidate, though there is no indication of Iranian involvement in either incident.
Last month, Trump’s campaign claimed that some of its internal communications had been hacked, suggesting possible targeting by Iranian operatives. Trump wrote on X on Wednesday:

U.S. Intelligence Warns Trump Of Iranian Assassination Threats

Former United States President Donald Trump is safe following an apparent assassination attempt at his Florida golf course on Sunday afternoon.
According to the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c3rllnd1pypo">BBC</a>, Secret Service agents noticed the barrel of a rifle protruding from some bushes and subsequently opened fire on the “potential suspect,” who is now in custody.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reported that Trump was between 300 and 500 yards (approximately 275 to 455 meters) away at the time of the incident.
The suspect has been identified by U.S. media as Ryan Routh, 58, from Hawaii. A witness observed him emerging from the bushes and fleeing in a black Nissan car after agents fired at him multiple times.
An AK-47-style firearm with a scope, along with two backpacks and a GoPro camera, was later recovered from the scene.
The witness also photographed the vehicle and its license plate, which led to the car being stopped later in Martin County, north of the golf club.
Sheriff Ric Bradshaw of Palm Beach County told a news briefing that the suspect was in custody. He said:

We got a hold of Martin County Sheriff’s Office, alerted them, and they spotted the vehicle and pulled it over and detained the guy.
After that, we took the witness that witnessed the incident, flew him up there and he identified as the person that he saw running out of the bushes, that jumped into the car.

It is unclear whether or not the gunman fired at either the former president or the agents. Rafael Barros from the Secret Service Miami Field Office said:

In an email to his supporters, Trump said he was “safe and well”.
The incident comes almost exactly two months after a gunman attempted to assassinate Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, striking his ear.
The Secret Service confirmed in a post on X that they were investigating a “protective incident” involving Trump that took place shortly before 14:00 EST (19:00 BST) on Sunday.
Later, Sheriff Bradshaw said, “the Secret Service agent that was on the course did a fantastic job”. 
He added:

What they do is they have an agent that jumps one hole ahead of time to where the president was at and he was able to spot this rifle barrel sticking out of the fence and immediately engage that individual, at which time the individual took off.”

Meanwhile, the suspect Routh was charged and convicted of numerous offences in Guilford County, North Carolina, between 2002 and 2010, according to a law enforcement source who spoke to CBS News.
The offences included carrying a concealed weapon, resisting arrest, hit and run in a motor vehicle, driving with a revoked licence and possession of stolen property.
The White House said President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris were briefed about the golf course incident.
Harris issued a statement saying:

Trump was the target of an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday evening.
Shots were fired at around 6:10 PM ET, about 8 minutes after Trump went on the stage at the rally.

Mnangagwa Condemns Attempted Assassination Of Donald Trump

The gunman involved in the attack against former United States President Donald Trump on Saturday has been identified by authorities as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks.
Crooks was shot and killed by Secret Service agents at the scene soon after the attempted assassination of the Republican party’s presumptive president in the 05 November 2024 presidential election.
In a statement early Sunday morning, the FBI named Crooks as the gunman, identifying him as a resident of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.
Bethel Park is about 35 miles south of Butler, where Trump was holding his rally.
According to <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2024/07/14/us/trump-shooting-thomas-matthew-crooks-intl-hnk/index.html">CNN</a>, Crooks fired on Trump while perched on a nearby building rooftop outside the rally’s security perimeter before being killed by the Secret Service.
Trump was injured, writing on social media that he’d been hit by a bullet in the upper part of his ear.
He later flew back to Newark, New Jersey, late Saturday night.
According to media reports, Crooks graduated from Bethel Park High School in 2022.
Crooks was registered to vote as a Republican, according to a listing in Pennsylvania’s voter database that matched his name, age, and a Bethel Park address that law enforcement was searching Saturday night and is linked to Crooks in public records.
This year’s presidential election would have been the first he was old enough to vote in.
Federal Election Commission records show that a donor listed as Thomas Crooks with the same address gave $15 to a Democratic-aligned political action committee in January 2021.

Former United States President Donald Trump was rushed off stage after gunshots erupted at a rally in Pennsylvania in an apparent assassination attempt, reported <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cd1d31jeyzlo">BBC</a>.
Video footage showed Trump grimacing and raising a hand to his right ear, before ducking as a series of shots broke out.
He was quickly swarmed by US Secret Service agents and dragged off stage to a waiting vehicle. Trump raised a fist as he was bundled into the car.
Later, in a post to his Truth Social network, Trump said a bullet pierced the “upper part” of his right ear. He wrote:

I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening.

Blood was visible on Trump’s ear and face as US Secret Service agents rushed him away.
US Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said the suspect was shot dead at the scene. He added that one bystander was killed in the shooting and two others were critically injured.
Law enforcement sources told the BBC’s US partner CBS News that the male attacker had been armed with a rifle and had fired from an elevated structure a few hundred metres away outside the venue.
FBI agents, who are leading the investigation, told reporters in Butler that they had “tentatively identified” the dead gunman, but were yet to establish a motive.
Special Agent Kevin Rojek confirmed the agency was treating the shooting as an assassination attempt.
He added that the suspect was not carrying ID and that investigators were using DNA in an attempt to formally identify him.
Trump, who is the Republican candidate for president had just started addressing his supporters in Butler, Pennsylvania when the shots started.
Several supporters holding placards and standing behind Trump ducked as the shots were heard.
Witnesses who spoke to the BBC claimed the gunshots may have come from a one-storey building to the right of the stage where Trump was speaking.
One of the bystanders, identified as Greg, told the BBC that he had spotted a suspicious-looking person “bear crawling” on the roof of the building about five minutes after Trump took to the stage. He said he pointed the person out to the police. Said Greg:

Donald Trump became the first former US president ever convicted of a crime after a New York jury found him guilty on all 34 counts in his hush-money case on Thursday, May 30.
The jury found Trump guilty on each of the 34 counts of falsifying business records to hide a payment meant to silence porn star Stormy Daniels.
Trump (77) faces the possibility of a four-year prison sentence or probation for his crimes and sentencing is set for 11 July.
His conviction comes months before an election that could see him yet return to the White House.
Trump, however, is not barred from running for the presidency
Addressing reporters after the verdict was confirmed, Trump declared his innocence, vowing that the “real verdict” would come from voters. He branded the trial “rigged” and a “disgrace.”
President Joe Biden’s campaign issued a statement saying the trial showed “no one is above the law.”
The statement added that “the threat Trump poses to our democracy has never been greater.”

Trump was found guilty of falsifying business records to reimburse his lawyer, Michael Cohen, for a $130,000 payment to Daniels on the eve of the 2016 election, when her claim to have had sex with him could have derailed his campaign against Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
The trial featured lengthy testimony from the adult performer, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford.
She described to the court in graphic detail what she says was a 2006 sexual encounter with the married Trump.
Prosecutors successfully laid out a charge alleging that the hush money and the illegal covering up of the payment was part of a broader crime to prevent voters from knowing about Trump’s behaviour.
Cohen, who was the key witness, and had turned against his old boss, called the verdict “an important day for accountability and the rule of law.”
Trump has denied any sexual encounter with Stormy Daniels but did not testify in his own defence and lawyers argued that any payments made to the performer were entirely legal.
Trump, who is known for mounting lengthy appeals of court rulings against him, is also likely to appeal the conviction, which could significantly delay his sentencing.
Should Trump win the presidency he will not be able to pardon himself, given that the case was brought not by the federal government but by the state of New York, where only the governor could pardon him.

Nelson Chamisa, the leader of the opposition party Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) in Zimbabwe, has expressed his commitment to a government founded on truth. He emphasised that under his leadership, Zimbabwe would operate based on truth, with no lies, propaganda, or malice. He posted on X:

Chamisa, who believes he won the August 2023 presidential election against President Emmerson Mnangagwa, rejected the results and called for fresh elections. However, his party’s participation in by-elections to fill vacant positions has led analysts to believe that they are indirectly endorsing the previous elections.
When questioned about allegations of centralising power, Chamisa did not provide a direct response but instead asked who was making those allegations. Some of his followers were dissatisfied with his evasive answer. They stated that his evasion was unnecessary, as parts of his <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/11/22/ccc-constitution-proves-that-has-never-been-the-interim-secretary-general-lawyer/">party’s constitution indicated the centralisation of power.</a>
Others criticised the idea of a government based solely on truth, deeming it naive. They argued that all governments employ propaganda and selective information dissemination to control their narratives. One commentator said:

Another one whose username on X is Patrick Masakusi pointed out that Chamisa’s post itself was not truthful, claiming that it was a false foundation for his government. Patrick Masakusi said:

Another commentator RexNhongo @NhongoRexy referred to Chamisa’s previous claim that he met Donald Trump. In 2018, Chamisa the former US President Donald Trump promised his party US$15 billion if they won the 2018 elections. Trump denied the allegations, and Chamisa later denied making those remarks, despite being recorded saying them during a rally.
The institutions mentioned in Chamisa’s post, such as the government and ZBC (Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation), have frequently been accused of disseminating misleading information and promoting the ruling party’s agenda. The government has also faced criticism for unfulfilled promises, such as free education and economic stabilisation. Government officials including Nick Mangwana, Information Secretary, have been accused of lying to the public on multiple occasions. Recently, journalist Hopewell Chin’ono accused Mangwana of lying that <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2024/01/05/councils-are-responsible-for-maintenance-of-city-roads-mangwana/">the failure of opposition-led local government authorities to provide essential services</a> like sewage systems, garbage collection, and clean water was due to incompetence. <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2024/01/05/local-authorities-need-money-to-maintain-roads-mayor-coltart-responds-to-mangwana/">Chin’ono argued that the central government had taken control of the revenue generation methods used by local authorities</a>, making it difficult for them to fund these services properly. Former United States of America President Donald Trump has been barred from running for president next year in Colorado by the Colorado Supreme Court, reported <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-67768873">BBC News</a>.
The court ruled 4-3 that Trump was not an eligible candidate because he had engaged in an insurrection over the US Capitol riot nearly three years ago.
The ruling applies only to Colorado’s 05 March Republican primary but it could affect Trump’s status in the state for the 05 November general election.
It does not stop Trump running in the other states and his campaign says it will appeal to the US Supreme Court.
The ruling marks the first-ever use of Section 3 of the US Constitution’s 14th Amendment to disqualify a presidential candidate.
The 14th Amendment was ratified after the American Civil War. Section 3 was intended to block secessionists from returning to previous government roles once southern states re-joined the Union.
It was used against Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his vice-president Alexander Stephens, both of whom had served in Congress. It has seldom been invoked since.
The Tuesday ruling sets the stage for the Supreme Court, whose 6-3 conservative majority includes three Trump appointees, to consider whether the former President is eligible to serve another term. The justices wrote in their ruling:

Twitter has reinstated former US President Donald Trump’s account after Twitter CEO and new owner Elon Musk posted a poll on Twitter on Friday night asking the platform’s users if Trump should be reinstated.

Donald Trump Announces He'll Seek Re-election In 2024

Elon Musk fired Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal along with three other top executives including legal executive Vijaya Gadde as soon as he acquired the microblogging site. 
Reports claimed that Musk is apparently running a cleaning drive at Twitter and earlier there were reports which said that Musk may fire up to 75% of Twitter’s workforce. 
The CEO of electric car maker Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) and self-described free speech absolutist also fired Chief Financial Officer Ned Segal, according to people familiar with the matter. 
He had accused them of misleading him and Twitter investors over the number of fake accounts on the platform.
Agrawal and Segal were in Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters when the deal closed and were escorted out, the sources added.
Musk, who also runs rocket company SpaceX, plans to become Twitter’s interim CEO according to a person familiar with the matter and following an earlier report by Reuters. 
Musk also plans to scrap permanent bans on users, Bloomberg said, citing a person familiar with the matter.
Musk said in May he would reverse Twitter’s ban on Donald Trump, whose account was removed after the attack on the U.S. Capitol. 
The former U.S. president previously said he won’t return to the platform and has instead launched his own social media app, Truth Social.
Musk tried to calm Twitter employee fears that major layoffs are coming and assured advertisers that his past criticism of Twitter’s content moderation rules would not harm its appeal.
As news of the deal spread, some Twitter users were quick to flag their willingness to walk away.

The FBI seized documents from Mar-a-Lago (Trump’s private club and residence in Southern Florida) and now there is an investigation into Trump’s handling of classified documents. The investigation could lead to charges for holding secret information and hiding it from government investigators.
Trump’s Attorneys earlier claimed that all classified documents had been handed over following the issuing of a grand jury subpoena in May but a photograph from the 8 August search shows a number of classified documents on the floor of Trump’s office in Mar-a-Lago.
His Attorneys are facing the Department of Justice (DoJ) as the former president’s team argues that a “special master” should review the documents.
The request for an outside review of the documents found at Mar-a-Lago comes after a federal magistrate judge issued a search warrant seeking evidence concerning the handling of top secret documents as well as possible obstruction of justice.

United States president Joe Biden has spoken for the first time since his predecessor, Donald Trump was acquitted in the second impeachment trial.
By a vote of 57 to 43, the Senate acquitted Trump, with 67 votes needed to secure a conviction.
In a statement issued nearly seven hours after the vote, President Biden began by paying tribute to Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick who was killed by a pro-Trump mob during an attack on the Capitol Hill in January. Below is the statement in full:

President Biden Speaks After Trump's 2nd Acquittal

United States president, Joe Biden is Monday expected to reinstate COVID-19 travel restrictions which his predecessor Donald Trump had lifted.
The ban would prevent most non-U.S. citizens from entry if they have recently been in South Africa, where a new aggressive variant of Covid-19 has been identified.
Biden is also expected to reinstate broader restrictions that were in effect much of the past year but were rescinded by President Donald Trump <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/18/us/coronavirus-travel-ban-europe-brazil.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">days before his term ended</a>.
The COVID-19 travel restrictions would affect non-U.S. citizens travelling from the United Kingdom, Ireland and much of Europe in what is known as the Schengen countries, which share a common visa process. Travellers from Brazil would also be affected.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said Sunday that, beginning Tuesday, it will no longer consider exceptions to <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/testing-international-air-travelers.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">its requirement that international travelLers</a> present negative coronavirus tests.
Airlines had asked the agency to relax the rule for some countries with limited testing capacity. A CDC spokesman said in a statement:

World leaders castigated the violence with some describing it as a huge blow to democracy in the whole world.
Trump previously survived impeachment over abuse of power and the alleged involvement Russia in the previous election in which he overcame Hillary Clinton.

United States Vice President Mike Pence has said he will not invoke the 25th Amendment against President Donald Trump.
The 25th Amendment can be used to remove a sitting President and was designed to be used in the event of presidential incapacity or disability.
In a letter to House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Pence said, “I do not believe that such a course of action is in the best interest of our Nation or consistent with our Constitution”. The letter reads:

Every American was shocked and saddened by the attack on our Nation’s Capitol last week, and I am grateful for the leadership that you and other congressional leaders provided in reconvening Congress to complete the people’s business on the very same day.

But now, with just eight days left in the President’s term, you and the Democratic Caucus are demanding that the Cabinet and I invoke the 25th Amendment.
I do not believe that such a course of action is in the best interest of our Nation or consistent with our Constitution.
Last week, I did not yield to pressure to exert power beyond my constitutional authority to determine the outcome of the election, and I will not now yield to efforts in the House of Representatives to play political games at a time so serious in the life of our Nation.
As you know full well, the 25th Amendment was designed to address Presidential incapacity or disability.
Just a few months ago, when you introduced legislation to create a 25th Amendment Commission, you said, “[a] President’s fitness for office must be determined by science and facts.”
You said then that we must be “[v]ery respectful of not making a judgment on the basis of a comment or behaviour that we don’t like, but based on a medical decision.”
Madam Speaker, you were right. Under our Constitution, the 25th Amendment is not a means of punishment or usurpation. Invoking the 25th Amendment in such a manner would set a terrible precedent.
After the horrific events of this last week, our Administration’s energy is directed to ensuring an orderly transition.
The Bible says that “for everything, there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven…a time to heal, … and a time to build up.” That time is now.
In the midst of a global pandemic, economic hardship for millions of Americans, and the tragic events of January 6th, now is the time for us to come together, now is the time to heal.
I urge you and every member of Congress to avoid actions that would further divide and inflame the passions of the moment.

The youthful MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa has addressed the photo of a comparison between him and embattled US President Donald Trump being touted by his rivals and said in the end, the will of the people will prevail. Social Media sites YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook yesterday removed a video of Donald Trump in which he was telling protestors he told to take over Capitol Hill to go home and that he loved them and they were very special.
Trump who incited the protest has posted a short video on the platforms urging the protestors to go home before he told them they were very special and that he loved them. In his ending remarks on the video Trump said:
<blockquote>So go home, we love you, you’re very special. You’ve seen what happens, you’ve seen the way others are treated that are so bad and so evil. I know how you feel. But go home and go home in peace</blockquote>
He failed to condemn the acts of violence that had caused Capitol Hill to be in lockdown in the short clip that was taken down by YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook
Addressing the issue, YouTube’s Head of Policy Communications Farshad Shadloo said the video violated their policies:

Twitter has blocked the account of United States President Donald Trump for at least 12 hours while Facebook blocked him for 24 hours over policy violations.

Donald Trump’s deputy Mike Pence reportedly told the embattled US leader that he doubts he has the power to overturn Joe Biden’s congressional victory over alleged voter fraud, The New York Times reports.
This was revealed to the publication by sources who were briefed about the conversation that took place during the 2 men’s weekly lunch yesterday.
Trump had before the meeting, basing on Pence’s formal and constitutionally prescribed role of presiding over the House and Senate as they receive and certify the electoral votes conveyed by the states, tweeted:
<blockquote>The Vice President has the power to reject fraudulently chosen electors.</blockquote>
However, according to sources that spoke to the publication Pence said he has no such power and promised Trump he will keep studying the issue till the certification of the vote at 1 PM in Washington DC today:

Trump's Deputy Tells Him He Has No Power To Overturn Biden's Victory

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy Monday seized a South Korean oil tanker vessel with the commercial name Hankuk Chemi in the Persian Gulf.
The Hankuk Chemi vessel was said to be carrying 7 200 tonnes of ethanol.
In a statement, the IRGC Navy said it seized the Hankuk Chemi Vessel due to repeated “violations of environmental laws.” Read the statement in part:
<blockquote>The South Korean oil tanker vessel with the commercial name Hankuk Chemi was stopped by the Guards’ Navy this morning due to violating environmental protocols.</blockquote>
Later on Monday, South Korea, a United States ally, demanded the vessel’s immediate release, adding in a statement that its forces stationed in the Strait of Hormuz were dispatched to the area.
Meanwhile, the spokesman of the Iranian foreign ministry, Saeed Khatibzadeh, said earlier a high-level official from the South Korean foreign ministry will travel to Tehran later this week to discuss Seoul’s prolonged freezing of billions of dollars of Iranian money due to United States sanctions.
In December, the governor of the Central Bank of Iran said Tehran has $7bn locked away in South Korea making it difficult for Iran to buy COVID-19 vaccines from COVAX, a global vaccine effort operating under the World Health Organization.
The US imposed harsh economic sanctions on Iran after President Donald Trump, in May 2018, unilaterally withdrew from Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.
