Two Zimbabwean citizens were among the victims of a vigilante attack in a crime-ridden township of Diepsloot, a suburb north of Johannesburg in South Africa.
Talent Moyo and his unidentified friend were on their way to a church service when they were murdered, according to Moyo’s family. Witnesses said the duo encountered a mob that believed they were criminals terrorising the area. The pair was bound, beaten, and burned to death while pleading for their lives. Moyo’s aunt shared the tragic details and mentioned plans to repatriate his body for burial in his rural hometown of Kezi. Moyo’s Aunt Mrs Sibonginkosi Banda said:

They encountered a mob that was meting justice on five suspected gang members that had been terrorizing the community. They were so much into church and from what we gather they were bound together with tyres and ropes, beaten and burnt to death while they pleaded for their lives.

According to Mrs. Banda, Talent Moyo’s father identified him by his clothes and belongings, which included church attire and bibles. Plans are being made to confirm his identity through DNA tests so his body can be repatriated for burial in his rural hometown of Kezi. Mrs. Banda said Moyo was a young man who had plans to get married in December. 
South Africa is facing a rising murder rate, particularly in ungoverned suburbs like Diepsloot. This town, located north of Johannesburg and home to over 350,000 people, suffers from high rates of killings and rape. Authorities have been criticised for neglecting these areas. Police have initiated a murder investigation after finding the charred bodies of seven young men. Two burned bodies were reported initially, followed by the discovery of five more bodies in a nearby district of Diepsloot.
Police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo told AFP that police condemn vigilantism and stress that taking the law into one’s own hands is a serious criminal offence. Masondo added:

Preliminary investigation suggests that in both incidents, the victims were assaulted and burned by the mob.
</blockquote>
Diepsloot serves as a stark reminder of South Africa’s struggle with a high murder rate, averaging 68 murders per day in the second quarter of 2023.

African National Congress (ANC) chairperson, Gwede Mantashe, has urged South Africans not to identify criminals by their nationality.
Speaking to News24 in Victoria Falls on Saturday, Mantashe, who is also South Africa’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, said crime knows no nationality. He said:

I always make the point at home and I will make it here: if a national from Zimbabwe commits a crime, he’s not a Zimbabwean, he’s a criminal. You must deal with criminals, not Zimbabweans, that’s my attitude.
… We have Zimbabweans from all walks of life in South Africa, they are in universities, they are in various institutions, they are CEOs of companies.
When people commit crimes in South Africa, they are not Zimbabweans, they are criminals.
When South Africans commit crimes in Zimbabwe, they are criminals.

On 6 April 2022, a Zimbabwean, Elvis Nyathi, was killed by vigilantes in Diepsloot, Johannesburg, for not having a passport.
Some South Africans blame foreigners for criminal conduct in their communities.
Mantashe admitted that his compatriots have a penchant for taking the law into their own hands. He said:

If you commit a crime in a community, the anger of the community would be informed by the extent of the crime.
Everybody who is doing the right thing in South Africa is safe.

Mantashe was in Zimbabwe to attend a meeting about the revival of the Pan African Minerals Development Corporation, a mining entity that brings together the governments of SA, Zimbabwe, and Malawi.

The South African Council of Churches (SACC) has condemned the recent brutal murder of a Zimbabwean national by vigilantes in Diepsloot, South Africa.
Elvis Nyathi, a 43-year old married father of four was assaulted and then burnt by a mob on Wednesday, for being a foreigner.
In a statement, SACC secretary-general, Bishop Malusi Mpumlwana, said South Africans should be ashamed of the horrific killings of fellow human beings across the country in recent years. Said Mpumlwana:

The South African Council of Churches (SACC) is in despair at the horrific occurrence at Diepsloot Johannesburg, where a human being, Elvis Nyathi, was hunted down like a frightened animal, butchered and reportedly burnt to death.
We echo the stern rebuke of SACC President Archbishop Thabo Makgoba who said, “Our ubuntu through your killing is being butchered in Diepsloot and many parts of the country!”
We extend our deepest condolences to the Nyathi family and hang our heads in collective shame that things have come to this.
Only last month we warned that this growing tendency of community groups going on search parties to “smell out” who they consider illegal foreigners will lead to deaths of people as has happened at Diepsloot.
In 2015 Emmanuel Sithole was stabbed to death at Alexandra, in 2019 Isaac Sithole was burned alive at Katlehong. Now we have pounced on Elvis Nyathi to meet a horrific death.
Is this how we should be known as South Africans, a country that prides itself on the culture of ubuntu-botho? Is the identity of ‘street killers of Africans’ the brand we choose to project for South Africa?

Nyathi’s death occurred at a time when xenophobia is rising in South Africa, spurred by far-right fringe political parties and the anti-immigrant Operation Dudula movement.

The Zimbabwean Government has through its Embassy in South Africa, started engaging the SA Government following the brutal murder of a Zimbabwean national in the neighbouring country.
Elvis Nyathi (43), a domestic worker who lived in Diepsloot, a slum area in Johannesburg, was stoned and set alight by vigilantes on Wednesday night for being a foreigner.
Zimbabwe’s Consul-General in South Africa Melody Chaurura told The Sunday Mail on Saturday that they were talking with the SA Government at all levels. She said:

I was able to visit the family of Elvis Nyathi yesterday (Friday) to pass our condolences.
We have been able to get free repatriation of the body from a Zimbabwe-owned funeral parlour here in South Africa.
We are very much concerned with this issue and we are talking to the South African government at all levels to see how the issue can be dealt with.

Speaking to The Sunday Mail, the deceased’s brother, Godknows Nyathi, said the Zimbabwean Consulate was assisting with facilitating the repatriation process. He said:

The consulate came and said they are going to assist us with the repatriation of his body to Zimbabwe.
We will be waiting for the autopsy then after that, we will get the papers and bring the body to Zimbabwe on Thursday or Friday.

<h2>Full statement by ZANU PF South Africa in response to the brutal murder of a Zimbabwean national by vigilantes in South Africa.</h2>

ZANU PF South Africa District condemns the gruesome murder of Elvis Nyati a Zimbabwean national by a South African vigilante group in Diepsloot on the early hours of Thursday 7th April 2022.
We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and wish to extend our deepest condolences to the wife of Elvis Nyathi and the Nyathi family.
As a party, we unequivocally condemn the brutal and gruesome murder of Mr. Nyathi, a Zimbabwean national through burning and beating.
The videos showing his road to death are horrifying and to imagine that it was perpetrated by fellow humans on another human is unimaginable.
The fact that this murder is one of many murders of foreign nationals that have been going on in South Africa for a very long time is regrettable.
As a party, ZANU PF SA respects the South African security services and other government functionaries.
It is therefore worrisome that a group of people can take the law into their hands, harass foreign nationals from African countries with impunity.
How vigilante groups in a country that has a whole functional police service and home affairs department, carry out unsanctioned activities uncheckered resulting in loss of property and lives is unfortunate.
ZANU PF SA does not condone any acts of criminality by its citizens and anyone for that matter.
It respects and values the rule of law, the sanctity of life and human rights.
To that end anyone caught on the wrong side of the law should be brought before the courts of law following due process.
ZANU PF also condemns the unsanctioned and unwarranted witch-hunting of foreign nationals in South Africa and labelling them as criminals.
We reiterate that we do not condone any criminality by any of the Zimbabwean nationals.
However, we believe that crime is crime regardless of nationality. It should therefore be dealt with as crime by authorities within the confines of the laws of South Africa and not by any vigilante group.
As a liberation movement, ZANU PF believes in the oneness and respect of Africa and Africans.

This comes after a Zimbabwean domestic worker, Elvis Nyathi (43), was assaulted and then set alight by a mob in Diepsloot, a slum area in northern Johannesburg, on Wednesday night.
Lux and his movement accuse foreign nationals of “stealing our jobs”, selling illicit drugs and committing other crimes in the country.
He joined a protest by residents of Diepsloot earlier on Wednesday. Speaking at the demonstrations, he said:

'Lux' Says He Can't Shed Tears For A Zimbabwean Killed In Diepsloot

A South African-based Zimbabwean man said his ability to speak the Pedi language saved him from being killed by a mob that was raiding homes of suspected illegal immigrants in Diepsloot on Wednesday night.
The man in his mid-40s, whose name could not be revealed for fear of victimisation, said he first heard people shouting “passport or ID in hand” and banging on shacks at about 10 pm.
He said he then left his shack to avoid them knocking on his door, shouting “go diragalang? (what’s happening?).” Said the man:

After picking up my Pedi accent, they asked me to join them in their raids. I did because I was petrified.
They were a group of about 50 men, armed with pangas, axes and golf sticks. I was totally not aware of what was to happen.

He said the vigilantes spotted his neighbour, Elvis Nyathi, running away from his shack and gave chase.
Unfortunately, the gang caught up with the Zimbabwean and began beating him with a golf club.
The man, who said he has been friends with Nyathi for six years, said the mob dragged Nyathi to a nearby street where they set him alight. Added the man:

I tried to ask them not to assault him but they wouldn’t listen. Then I realised if I persist in pleading for his life, they might realise that I have a relationship with him, so I stopped.
They put him in the fire. I do not think he was alive by then. While we were there, the TRT [Tactical Response Team] unit came and dispersed the mob.
It was the most painful experience I have ever had in my life, seeing an honest man being killed like a criminal.

The Zimbabwean man, who is a construction worker and has been in South Africa since 1991, said he is now living in fear. He said:

There is someone in our space who is giving information to these people on which homes to raid. They only targeted specific homes and left others.
That is what makes me uncomfortable even speaking to you because I do not know who is watching us.

Nyathi (43), was killed on Wednesday night after he had hidden behind his shack.
His brother Godknows said his brother was in a panic when he ran.
Another Diepsloot resident told The Sowetan that he saw the warning signs of the raids on Wednesday.
According to the man, some members of the community said they’d be searching for people without SA IDs at night.
As a result, on Wednesday night he decided to sleep with his clothes on.
He said the gang knocked on his door but left when they realised that they knew him.

The wife of Mbodazwe Elvis Nyathi, a 43-year-old Zimbabwean national killed by a mob in South Africa, has fled her home fearing for her life.
Nomsa Tshuma fled from her home in Diepsloot, a slum area located north of South Africa’s commercial capital, Johannesburg, following the brutal murder of her husband on Wednesday night.
Nyathi ran away from his shack, trying to escape from a mob that was moving door-to-door, demanding to see residents’ passports.
The mob, however, caught up with him and beat him up with a club, dragged him to a nearby street and set him alight.
Speaking to eNCA, ZAPU spokesperson Msongelwa Ndlovu said they will not reveal where Tshuma was going for safety reasons. He said:

The family is distraught, naturally, and they are beyond themselves. The manner in which her husband died is the most gruesome and we feel it as well.
We are not in a position to disclose where she is going for obvious reasons.

SA: Murdered Zimbabwean Man's Wife Flees Her Home

South Africa’s International Relations Minister, Naledi Pandor, said that her government will not condone violence against foreign nationals.
Pandor made the remarks while speaking on SABC after a 43-year-old Zimbabwean man, Mhbodazwe Elvis Nyathi was stoned and set alight in a mob attack in Diepsloot north-west of Johannesburg overnight.
The attack followed a day of protests as residents of Diepsloot embarked on a protest, barricading roads with burning tyres, over escalating crime.
At least eight people were shot dead and 14 others wounded in Diepsloot over the past few days resulting in the protests. Said Pandor:

We have to document everybody who is in the country. I must say I admire the people of South Africa because we had never separated communities of Africans from elsewhere living in a refugee camp.
We have always allowed those who come into our country to live within the community.
So, I do think as a government you have to listen to the people but you can not tolerate violence against any person.

Meanwhile, community leaders in Diepsloot have sent their condolences to the family of Nyathi.
Community leader Sicelo Shezi described the murder as pure vigilantism and urged the community not to take the law into their own hands.

SA FM Says Violence Against Foreigners Cannot Be Tolerated

A Zimbabwean national who was brutally murdered by a mob in Diepsloot, Johannesburg, South Africa on Wednesday, was not a criminal, his family has said.
The now-deceased 43-year-old  Mbhodazwe “Elvis” Nyathi was a gardener in Fourways and had a wife and four kids. He lived on Thubelihle Street, Diepsloot.
According to his family, Nyathi had just come home from work when a mob ran through his neighbourhood chasing a group of people, knocking on doors and asking for ID documents.
Nyathi was allegedly caught by the group who tied him up, assaulted him and set him on fire. Nyathi’s brother, Godknows, said:

My brother, his wife and others hid behind their shack and the group found them and started chasing them because they thought they were criminals.
We are hurt because my brother was not a criminal. I spoke to him yesterday when he was at work and after work, he came back home to Diepsloot and they killed him. My brother was a good person. He had a wife and four children.
All I can say to the community of Diepsloot is if they catch someone they need to investigate if this person is a criminal or not.
They can’t just catch someone and kill them because they will only find out at the end that this person was not a criminal and was innocent.

On Thursday morning, Nyathi’s family cleaned his blood off the street and retrieved pieces of his clothing from the burnt rubble, a few metres from where he lived with his wife and kids.
South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, Brigadier Brenda Muridili, had earlier told News24 that the mob had gone door to door at around 9 PM on Wednesday and demanded passports from foreigners.
When they entered one home, a man fled the scene, was chased down and killed, she said.
Speaking to SABC on Thursday, Nyathi’s widow said her husband had fled from the mob because he did not have a passport.
Residents refused to speak to News24 saying they feared for their lives.
Andrew Maleka, a community leader, condemned the killing of the Zimbabwean national. He said:

We condemn this thing. Zimbabweans… this is their home and they are our brothers and sisters.
One of these days we, as South Africans, are going to need them and we will have to leave South Africa to go to Zimbabwe for a better life because the situation they have in Zimbabwe is on its way to South Africa.
If you look at how South Africans are living now, people are unemployed and there are no jobs.

'Zimbabwean Man Brutally Murdered By Vigilantes In SA Was Not A Criminal'

The wife of a Zimbabwean national brutally murdered in South Africa on Wednesday night said the gang that took her husband away and later stoned and set him on fire demanded R300 cash.
Speaking to SABC News, Nyathi’s widow said the gang accused her husband of criminality and of owning a gun and demanded cash.
She said she had only R50 which they grabbed before taking away Nyathi who they stoned and set alight on fire in the street.

South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party has condemned the brutal murder of a Zimbabwean national, Elvis Nyathi, by a vigilante group in Diepsloot, north of Johanessburg on Wednesday night.

Earlier in the day, police had clashed with protesters who were blocking roads and burning tyres, demanding that authorities take action against the high crime rate in the area.
In a statement, EFF blamed a vigilante group in South Africa that gained prominence by making door-to-door raids against perceived undocumented foreigners.

These vigilante groups attribute all crimes in this country to foreign nationals, without any scientific or crime statistics to corroborate their claims.
As a result, it has become a syndicate that extorts people, hijacks houses, loots African-owned retail outlets, burns the stores of Africans and today bums a human being to ashes.
These are the consequences of endorsing and sponsoring vigilante groups by popular media and the ruling party itself, which seeks to scapegoat its inability to fight crime, create jobs and provide adequate healthcare, to foreign nationals.
It is an objective fact that the hospitals of South Africa are collapsing because of a government that has no internal capacity to develop and maintain healthcare infrastructure.
There are no jobs in South Africa because this government refuses to industrialise and has outsourced the duty of job creation and economic growth, to a parasitic private sector.
Crime in South Africa is spiralling out of control, because of an incompetent and self-obsessed Minister of Police who has factionalised the police force and has allowed criminality to brew in the security cluster.
Domestic violence and abuse are perpetrated by the men of this country and the infiltration of drugs in our communities is enabled by South Africans themselves.
It has however become convenient to blame foreign nationals for all of these social ills because those leading our society refuse to take responsibility.
The refusal of the ANC to take responsibility for its failures and its abdication of the duty to create jobs and fight crime has led to the brutal killing of an African brother.
The EFF has long warned that if the various groups which are mushrooming on the anti-immigration ticket are not stopped, it will end in a loss of life.  It is unfortunate that in this instance, we have been proven correct.
The EFF will visit the family of Elvis Nyathi and ensure that justice is served to the family.
We send our deepest condolences to his loved ones, who have been robbed in the most brutal manner, of a father, a husband and a son.
May his soul rest in peace.

EFF Condemns The Brutal Murder Of Zimbabwean National In Diepsloot

One person was killed in a mob attack in Diepsloot north of Johannesburg, South Africa, on Wednesday night, the South Africa Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed.
According to SABC reporter Chriselda Lewis, the victim was reportedly <a href="https://twitter.com/Chriseldalewis/status/1511915373880352768?s=20&amp;t=Yp0isdufaHUwtsqOcSvYVg">stoned to death and set on fire.</a>
Scores of residents staged a protest and blocked roads, burning tyres over the escalating crime in the area earlier in the day.
Police spokesperson Brenda Muridili confirmed the murder but said the nationality of the victim was yet to be ascertained. She said:

I can confirm that overnight there was an incident of mob justice. Reports that we’re getting from witnesses is that there’s a small group of people that went from door to door and then when they got to this house, this young man just ran out of the house and they chased him and unfortunately he was killed.
As soon as the police got that information, they rushed to the scene but when they got there, the people had already been dispersed. At this stage, we cannot confirm the nationality of the deceased.

Police Minister Bheki Cele visited the area on Wednesday and promised to deploy more police officers and resources.
He said more than 50 police members, including 30 tactical response team members, and 16 new vehicles would be deployed to Diepsloot.

Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Operation_Dudula">Operation Dudula</a> leader, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Nhlanhla_%22Lux%22_Dlamini">Nhlanhla “Lux” Dlamini</a>, whose real name is Ntlantla Mohlauhi joined the protest in solidarity with the residents of Diepsloot. He said:
