The novel coronavirus has hit three boarding schools in Mashonaland East province, with 80 learners and teachers testing positive last week.
According to a Health ministry situational report (sitrep) dated 20 January 2023, the schools, which are all in Murehwa District, are Murehwa High, Nhowe Mission and Hurungwe Primary.
Health officials say the confirmed cases have been isolated while surveillance tests have been intensified.
The report also reveals that efforts to reach out to other parts of the district were being hampered by transport challenges.
According to the report, as of Saturday, at least 40 learners at Murehwa High School were in isolation while 32 cases were recorded at Nhowe Mission with three cases being reported at Hurungwe Primary School.
At Hurungwe Primary School, two female teachers tested positive for the virus. Part of the report says:

No admission of cases in isolation and no death has been reported.

Mashonaland East provincial medical director (PMD) Paul Matsvimbo on Sunday confirmed the cases to NewsDay, saying the situation was under control. He said:

I confirm that there are COVID-19 cases and Nhowe Mission and Murewa High School. As for Hurungwe, I will check on the latest developments.
The boarding schools have already implemented public health safety measures, that is isolating those who tested positive among other measures.
The situation is under control and all those who tested positive are stable and doing well. Our health officers are on the ground monitoring the situation.

New COVID-19 Cases Recorded At 3 Boarding Schools

The number of confirmed new coronavirus infections at Fatima High School in Lupane District has risen from 6 to 131 amid reports some teachers have refused to be tested for the virus.
Lupane District Medical Officer, Dr George Mutizira said the outbreak was institutional, not coming from outside and they have since quarantined the school.
Mutizira said no one will be allowed to come in or go out until the situation is back to normal. He said:
<blockquote>
We conducted a screening exercise at the institution which was over three days due to other school activities which prevented us from conducting the exercise in one day.
Everyone was screened except some teachers who refused to be tested.
Our observations were that this is an institutional outbreak and as such, we decided to quarantine the institution from interacting with the outside world.
We hope within the next two weeks the situation would have normalised and we also hope that the school authorities will make sure the measures we gave them as part of containing this outbreak will be religiously followed.

Mutizira said the figures were cumulative, starting at 6 cases initial to 12 then 18, 46 and 49, making it 131 positive cases.
Matabeleland North Provincial Education Director (PED), Jabulani Mpofu confirmed the outbreak to the <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/aston-villas-nakamba-nightmare-struggling-midfielders-value-sinks-to-3m/">Chronicle</a> but said he was unaware that some teachers had refused to be screened. He said:

It is true yes that there have been positive cases at the school but I have not heard that some teachers refused to get tested, for what purpose really?
Get hold of the Lupane District Schools Inspector (DSI) who is on the ground and may give you the correct position.

Lupane DSI, Lovemore Ncube, confirmed that some teachers had indeed refused to be screened and said the school head, a Mr Moyo, who attended a Matabeleland North boarding schools meeting held at Milton High School in Bulawayo on Monday, was not coming directly from Fatima High School. Said Ncube.

What we know is that one student teacher and 82 learners have tested positive for COVID-19.
Everyone in the school has been screened and we have not been informed that some teachers refused to be tested.
As for the school head, yes, he attended the meeting in Bulawayo but was not coming from the school.
He was from another meeting outside the province.

Fatima High School COVID-19 Cases Rise To 131

The Government says sporting activities in schools remain suspended due to the possibility of a rise in coronavirus infections as winter sets in.
In her post-Cabinet briefing in Harare on Tuesday, 10 May, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said:
<blockquote>
While the country is doing well in its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Cabinet, nonetheless, calls upon citizens to remain vigilant and strictly observe the national and World Health Organisation (WHO) COVID-19 protocols, and the relevant regulations will continue to be strictly enforced.
Furthermore, there is a need to closely monitor the situation in schools for the coming few weeks before allowing the resumption of sporting activities in the institutions, given that the re-opening of schools and the onset of winter is usually associated with increased cases of COVID-19.
</blockquote>
Mutsvangwa also revealed that as of 9 May 2022, the country’s cumulative COVID-19 cases stood at 248 531, with 242 118 recoveries and 5 479 deaths. She said:

The recovery rate was 98 per cent, with 785 active cases having been reported.
The number of new COVID-19 cases continued to decrease, with 361 cases having been recorded, compared to the 437 recorded the previous week, marking a 17 per cent decline.

Mutsvangwa urged the public to remain vigilant and strictly observe the national and World Health Organisation (WHO) COVID-19 protocols and get vaccinated. Said Mutsvangwa:

Regarding the national vaccination programme, Cabinet wishes to inform the nation that, as of 9 May 2022, a total of 5 924 932 first doses of the Covid-19 vaccine had been administered, while 3 868 126 people had received their second dose, and 647 049 their third.
This translates to national coverage of 53 per cent, up from the 52 per cent recorded the previous week. Cabinet calls upon all citizens that have not been vaccinated to present themselves for vaccination at centres nearest to them.
All provinces will now ramp up vaccination under the Phase II Vaccination Blitz Campaign Programme by working closely with community leaders.

Schools Sport Remain Suspended

The Government said it has managed to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus in schools as the 2022 first term ended this Thursday.
Previously, local health experts have argued against the opening of schools in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic saying schools may become superspreaders.
But Primary and Secondary Education ministry spokesperson Taungana Ndoro said the ministry drew lessons from last term when hundreds of learners contracted COVID-19.
A number of schools, in particular boarding schools, including universities and colleges, were forced to close as new infections soared. Said Ndoro:
<blockquote>
We have improved well from the previous state of affairs in schools regarding COVID-19 management.
Active cases never went above 1 000 and many of these cases were asymptomatic.
The recently started vaccination blitz has also aided us in ensuring the disease is managed in schools.

However, teachers’ unions disputed Ndoro’s assertion, arguing that the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education failed to support schools.
Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe president Takavafira Zhou said:

Schools had to depend on well-wishers and former old students’ associations for reprieve.
It is clear there was a need for a broad intervention policy more crafted in practical intervention.

Amalgamated Rural Teachers’ Union president Obert Masaraure said:

The new strains of COVID-19 seem to be less virulent and that is the only reason why schools were not forced to close.

Govt Says It Contained The Spread Of COVID-19 In Schools

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has directed authorities in boarding schools to ensure that learners in isolation must remain in school until they are cleared to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
Schools officially closed on Friday last week but COVID-19 positive pupils will only be allowed to go home after they are cleared by health authorities.
Bulawayo Provincial Medical Director, Dr Maphios Siamuchembu confirmed the development. He said:

As schools closed, those children who are in isolation because they have tested positive for COVID-19 remain in their current isolation facilities until the end of their isolation period.
My office regrets any inconvenience caused, but we cannot deliberately allow infected people to go around spreading the virus.

Recently, Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education communications and advocacy director, Taungana Ndoro revealed that over 100 schools had recorded COVID-19 cases countrywide.
Some private schools closed before the 17th of December to prevent the spread of COVID-19 following the detection of the highly transmissible Omicron coronavirus variant.

COVID-19 Positive Pupils To Remain In School Quarantine

Primary and Secondary Education Minister Evelyn Ndlovu said schools will remain open until 17 December as previously announced as the outbreak of COVID-19 in learning institutions is now under control.
She was speaking on Monday at the official handover of 100 000 washable masks by the Biomedical Research and Training Institute meant for schools. Said Ndlovu:
<blockquote>
Yes, we have recorded cases in schools, but we have managed to contain them and schools will continue as earlier announced. Children are actually in the middle of exams as we speak.
… This donation comes at the most opportune time as our country is facing the omicron variant.
We continue urging all learners to adhere to the SOPs set by the WHO.
</blockquote>
Biomedical Research and Training Institute Administrator, Tendai Muchena said:

Looking at the recent reports we felt this will benefit the schools hence this donation of washable face masks.

A few weeks ago the Government started vaccinating teenagers aged 16 and 17 against COVID-19 as it seeks to attain herd immunity by the end of December this year.
To date, 3 874 694 people have received the first dose while 2 884 045 have received both jabs.

We Have Contained COVID-19 In Schools - Ndlovu

The Government has no plans to close schools before the end of the term on 17 December despite an exponential rise in new coronavirus infections across the country.
The Ministry of Health and Child Care recorded only 40 new cases on 28 November but the figures have been rising since then.
On 29 November, 255 cases were reported, with the number rising to 1 042 on 2 December, 1 062 (3 December), and 1 082 (4 December).
Director of Communication and Advocacy in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Taungana Ndoro told The Sunday News on Saturday that there are no plans to close schools early. He said:

This term still ends on 17 December, we are not planning to close early, teachers, pupils and parents must not panic.
Exams are also progressing well and we have not had any incidences related to COVID-19.
</blockquote>
The Zimbabwe Teachers Association (ZIMTA) said there is no need to close schools prematurely which will unnecessarily disrupt the school calendar.
This comes as some universities have reportedly stopped face-to-face lectures as a way of controlling the spread of the pandemic.
Lupane State University (LSU) marketing and communications director Zwelithini Dlamini told The Sunday News that lectures at the institution have ended, saying it was to do with exams that start on Monday.

Coronavirus: Schools To Remain Open - Govt

Full statement by the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Jasper Chimedza on the reported outbreak of COVID-19 at Nashville High School in Gweru.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care wishes to inform parents and all concerned stakeholders that there are no cases of COVID-19 at Nashville High School in Gweru.
Investigations conducted at the school today by the Provincial COVID-19 Rapid Response Team led by the Provincial Medical Director have indicated that there are 16 cases of mild flu among the school children who are all boarders.
The school has 192 boarders, 628 day scholars and 38 teachers. All the boarders have been tested for COVID-19 and are all negative.
The 38 teachers were also tested for COVID19 and were also negative. Testing for day scholars is in progress.
The Ministry of Health and Child Care has followed up by telephoning three (3) parents who had taken their children home during the week. None of the parents has reported any of the children as COVID-19 positive.
The pictures that are circulating on social media are those of seven (7) male learners who took pictures of each other basking in the sun while waiting to be taken to Totonga Clinic after they had complained of flu-like symptoms a day ago.
All seven (7) boys were seen at Totonga Clinic and treated for mild respiratory tract infections. The seven (7) are also part of the 192 students seen and tested for COVID-19 today and are negative.
All parents with children at the school are advised to remain calm. The public is being discouraged from circulating unverified reports through social media as they can cause despondency and panic.
In the event that there is an outbreak of COVID-19 at any school, parents are advised not to withdraw their children from the school as this promotes the spread of the infection. Children are isolated or quarantined and treated at the school at no cost to the parents.
As usual, it is important that we continue practising recommended behaviours for the prevention of COVID-19 which include masking up, washing hands with soap and water or sanitizing, not touching the mouth, nose and eyes and avoiding crowds.
Any suspected cases should be reported to the nearest health facility.

"It's Mild Flu", Govt Finally Speaks On "Coronavirus Outbreak" At Nashville High School

Students at <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Nashville_High_School">Nashville High School</a> in Gweru stage-managed a COVID-19 “crisis” at the school in protest over the postponement of an exeat weekend which was scheduled for today by school authorities, it has emerged.
A voice note that went viral on social media from an alleged parent of a learner at the school claimed that students were spending most of their time sleeping in the sun, probably unaware they have COVID-19.
The parent said she was called to attend to her child, who tested COVID-19 positive and is now receiving treatment.
It has, however since emerged that the audio and pictures of schoolchildren lying in the sun were part of the stunt.
Gweru District COVID-19 Taskforce Chairperson, Joram Chimedza on Friday morning said all the 187 boarding pupils in the school tested negative for coronavirus following some rapid tests at the school. He said:

We reacted to reports of audio and pictures that went viral circulating on social media platforms last night and did the tests today.
Not even a single pupil or teacher tested positive, the situation is normal at the school and we appeal to members of the media to stop peddling falsehoods.
The pictures were actually sent by some of the pupils who were not happy after they were denied an exeat weekend. They meant to cause alarm.

He said testing was ongoing on teaching and non-teaching staff with none having tested positive so far.

Gweru School Pupils Stage COVID-19 Drama In Bid To Get Exeat Weekend

All the 192 pupils tested for coronavirus at <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Nashville_High_School">Nashville High School</a> in Gweru were negative, the Gweru COVID-19 task force has said.
The tests were conducted after a voice note circulating on social media from an alleged parent of a learner at the school claimed that students are spending most of their time sleeping in the sun, probably unaware they have COVID-19.
The parent said she was called to attend to her child, who tested COVID-19 positive and is now receiving treatment.
However, in an update, the task-force rapid antigen testing was conducted on all the 192 boarding students and none came out positive. It said:

All 192 Gweru School Students Test Negative For Coronavirus

Four hundred and thirty (430) cases of coronavirus have been recorded in schools since they opened on 30 August, with Matabeleland South Province accounting for most of the cases.
Several schools in Midlands, Masvingo and Mashonaland East provinces have also recorded COVID-19 cases.
Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education’s director of communication and advocacy Taungana Ndoro said Government is on top of the situation. Said Ndoro:

We are proud of our scientific surveillance through our standard guidelines for the coordinated prevention and management of the COVID-19 pandemic at all learning institutions.
</blockquote>
In terms of the schools’ standard operating protocols, all infected learners must be isolated in sick bays or special dormitories that have been created at the institutions. 
But Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) president Takavafira Zhou recently warned that the rising coronavirus cases could turn schools into quarantine centres.
He urged the Government to provide more testing kits in schools.

Schools Record 430 Coronavirus Cases

The Progressive Teachers Union (PTUZ) has criticised the government for reopening schools without proper mechanisms to combat coronavirus infections.
In a statement on Friday, PTUZ president Takavafira Zhou said that there are over 50 schools across the country that have recorded COVID-19 cases but the testing process is hindered by a critical shortage of testing kits. Said Zhou:

It is clear we have a covid threat in schools and communities. There is an urgent need for a broad-based intervention plan as COVID-19 threaten learning in many schools that are fast becoming quarantine centres.
Such intervention must be based on open engagement of government officials, health officials, teacher unions and parents.
Truth rather than a facade of lies peddled by Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education officials must be the guiding principle.

Zhou called on President Emmerson Mnangagwa to sack the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Cain Mathema.
He said Mathema misled the Cabinet and the President into opening schools without adequate measures to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
The outspoken unionist suggested an array of possible interventions that can stem the coronavirus tidal wave. Zhou said:

As of now, there is an urgent need for govt intervention in affected schools with food, toiletries, sanitary wear, tents, drilling of boreholes, psycho-social support etc.
It is also prudent to second health officials to monitor and advise on the management of quarantine centres in schools.
Assistance with learning gadgets to affected students can also go a long way as teachers can hardly have direct contact with COVID-19 positive students.
A comprehensive plan to test all students, teachers and ancillary staff at the affected schools is a panacea to combating COVID-19…

Zhou’s remarks come after several schools across the country have recorded COVID-19 cases since schools reopened just over two weeks ago.

'Schools Fast Becoming Quarantine Centres'

Two teachers have succumbed to COVID-19 while no pupil has died of the disease since the reopening of schools this term across the country.
This was revealed by the Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Paul Mavima while addressing National Social Security Authority (NSSA) pensioners’ representatives during an engagement forum held in Gweru on Thursday. Mavima said:
<blockquote>There was a spike in COVID-19 cases in schools soon after reopening. The spike was associated with schools reopening but Government could not close the schools forever.
They had to open at some time and so the Government relaxed COVID-19 lockdown induced rules and regulations.
One or two teachers lost their life’s due to this virus but we are glad that we haven’t lost a child in the school environment.
We can’t celebrate the loss of lives because all the lives matter but Government is doing all it can to mitigate against the spread of the virus in and outside schools.</blockquote>
He said as winter approaches- measures should be put in place to protect the learners and teachers in the schools.
Schools opened for the first term of the year on 15 March, more than two months after the original date due to the second wave of the coronavirus which hit the country soon after the festive season.

Two Teachers Succumb To COVID-19

Three pupils at Thornhill High School in Gweru have tested positive for COVID-19 and all are asymptomatic.
Pupils and teachers are waiting for their results while contact tracing is currently underway.
Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education communication and advocacy director, Taungana Ndoro confirmed the COVID-19 outbreak at the school. He said:
<blockquote>Yes, I can confirm that Thornhill high school in Gweru has been hit by cases of COVID-19. Three pupils tested positive. They are all asymptomatic and contact tracing is ongoing.</blockquote>
Thornhill High School headmaster Solomon Mukora said they are not going to close the school and send all children home.
Mukora said all pupils will be monitored while they continue learning and those who are sick will be treated attending lessons.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, 1 May 2021, the country recorded the lowest number of daily cases (3) in 2021 despite conducting 1 846 tests.

COVID-19 Strikes At Thornhill High School

Health officials in Bulawayo have said there were no new coronavirus cases recorded at Mzilikazi Primary School following the mass testing of pupils and staff.
Eight teachers tested positive for COVID-19 two weeks ago prompting health officials to initiate contact tracing and the testing of all pupils and staff members.
Testing was done on all the more than 800 pupils enrolled at the school and all staff members, with all results coming out negative.
Bulawayo City Council Health Director Dr. Edwin Sibanda said no new cases were recorded at the school. He said:
<blockquote>The tests done confirmed that there are no cases of Covid-19 among pupils at the school. We feared pupils could have contracted the virus from the teachers that tested positive hence the mass testing.</blockquote>
The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Child Care, has put in place a disease surveillance mechanism in schools.
Among other things, the Ministry said there must be no overcrowding at entry points, in classrooms, during break-time, in dining halls, boarding hostels, and common rooms, including libraries.
There should also be no hugging, hand-holding, or touching and schools must ensure correct mouth, nose, and eye hygiene, good toilet hygiene, and safe handling of all body fluids.

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has blamed “errant” school authorities for the current spike in new coronavirus infections in schools after they ignored a government directive not to allow boarding pupils to travel home for the Easter holidays.
Ministry of Education spokesperson Taungana Ndoro said the infected pupils got the coronavirus from outside and brought it to the schools. Said Ndoro:
<blockquote>Government banned the travelling of boarding pupils for the Easter holidays, but some errant school authorities permitted pupils to go out and allowed some parents to see their children.
The pupils contracted the virus from outside, resulting in cases developing in schools. That explains why cases are spiking soon after the Easter holidays.</blockquote>
This comes after Sacred Heart Girls High School in Esigodini was closed on Thursday after 51 pupils tested positive for COVID-19.
Another unnamed school in Umzingwane, presumed to be Umzingwane High School recorded 55 cases on the same day.
Meanwhile, the Chief coordinator of the national response to COVID-19, Agnes Mahomva said the government was monitoring closely cases of COVID-19 in schools. She said:
<blockquote>We are investigating why the schools recorded new cases when there are robust standard operating procedures put in place to curb the spread of COVID-19.
After investigations, we will analyse the outcomes and try to address the loopholes which might have led to the emergence of new cases in schools.
We will advise the nation of the new preventative measures if there is a need.</blockquote>
Prince Edward High School located in Harare was the first school to report new coronavirus cases since the commencement of the First Term on 15 March.

'Errant' School Authorities Blamed For Surge In Coronavirus Cases

Several schools in the Matabeleland region have reported a worrying number of new coronavirus infections since schools reopened on 15 March.
Sacred Heart schools in Umzingwane District, Girls College and Mzilikazi Primary School in Bulawayo are among those hit by the latest outbreak.
51 COVID-19 cases were reported at Sacred Heart primary and secondary schools. 45 of the pupils that tested positive are boarders while four are day-scholars and the other two cases are staff members.
At Mzilikazi Primary School, eight teachers are said to have tested positive leading to Government to initiate contact tracing.
Primary and Secondary Education Ministry communication and advocacy director Taungana Ndoro told State media that about 10 schools across the country have recorded new coronavirus infections. Said Ndoro:
<blockquote>Across the country, we have recorded roughly around 10 schools that have recorded Covid-19 cases this term.
Matabeleland region has been the worst hit but in other schools, they are recording probably a case each.
At the moment I’m waiting for a report of the cases that have been recorded across our schools.</blockquote>
Prince Edward High School in Harare and Dove Secondary School in Mberengwa are some of the schools that have recorded COVID-19 cases outside the Matabeleland region.
Last year, about 500 pupils were infected with COVID-19 at various schools — including John Tallach in Bulawayo and Chinhoyi High School in Mashonaland West.
