The Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ) says the new ZiG currency has brought more “challenges” for consumers than those they faced before its introduction.
The ZiG, short for Zimbabwe Gold, was launched on 5 April and succeeded the Zimbabwean dollar (ZWL), which had lost 80% of its value this year.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/business/article/200026667/zig-brought-more-misery-for-consumers-ccz">NewsDay</a>, CCZ chief executive officer Rosemary Mpofu said people are failing to use the ZiG outside the formal retail sector. She said:

As the Consumer Council of Zimbabwe, we were delighted when we heard that we are going to have a currency backed by gold reserves announced by the governor of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe.
We were very excited because we heard the country had enough gold to back the new Zimbabwe Gold currency.
We very much believed that when the currency is backed by gold and other commodities, it would give more value to our currency.
With that being said, as consumers, we are facing several challenges, which have resulted in us failing to easily accept the new currency.
These challenges have greatly impacted the acceptance of the new local currency by consumers in the country.
It seems the new currency has brought us more challenges than those we faced before the introduction of the Zimbabwe Gold currency.

Mpofu said kombi operators, who used to accept the bond notes, were not eager to accept the new currency and were doubling fares due to a shortage of change. She said:
<blockquote>
When boarding public transport on our everyday normal routes, we see that on the same route that we used to travel using US$0,50, we are being charged US$1 because of change challenges.
Sometimes we are forced to buy things that we do not want just for us not to leave our money with public transport operators. The same route that I used to travel using US$1, to and from, the price has doubled.

Mpofu also highlighted that some traders and service providers such as schools and fuel service stations were rejecting the ZiG. She said:
<blockquote>
It was announced recently that consumers are now able to buy fuel in local currency and Zera announced the ZiG prices for fuel.
However, we have not seen any fuel station that is accepting ZiG in exchange for fuel.
We did a survey and also consulted with ZERA [Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority] and we discovered that so far, no fuel station is accepting ZiG.
So far, the only place we can use the ZiG currency is in the supermarkets. Why are the service providers rejecting the ZiG currency?
</blockquote>
Mpofu appealed to authorities to continue arresting illegal money changers and ensure that service providers and traders use the official exchange rate at all times.

ZiG Brought More Challenges For Consumers - CCZ

The Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ) says a low-income urban family of six now needs just over $1 million a month to survive, up from $611 275 in April.
CCZ director Rosemary Mpofu said the cost of living rose by 62% between April and May in Zimbabwe dollar terms.
However, during the same period, the prices of goods and services in United States dollars went down by 31.4 %. <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200012536/family-basket-shoots-to-1m">She said:</a>
<blockquote>
The Consumer Council of Zimbabwe low-income urban earner monthly basket for a family of six stands currently at $1 015 962,61.
This is a sharp increase because the basket has shot from the month of April, where it was $611 275.
When we look at the basket as we measure it, we find out that the low-income earner is mainly earning in the Zimbabwean dollar.
But the cost of living has really increased from the April figure to the May figure and it has constituted a percentage increase of 62.2%.
The new analysis that we use in US$ has decreased by 31.4% so prices have increased in Zimbabwe dollar terms and yet in US$ have decreased by 31.4%.

The astronomical rise in the cost of living follows a sharp fall in the value of the Zimbabwe dollar over the past few weeks.
Last month, the Zimbabwe dollar fell by nearly 60% on the official market.
On Tuesday this week, the local currency fell from US$1: ZWL$2 577 set by the central bank on 30 May 2023 to ZWL$3 673.
The latest statistics by the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) indicate that the annual inflation rose by 11.3 percentage points from April to 86.5% in May.
However, Steve Hanke, a professor of Applied Economics at Johns Hopkins University, argues that Zimbabwe’s inflation is at 717%.

Family Basket Jumps To $1 Million Per Month - CCZ

The cost of living in Zimbabwe has gone up following a sharp rise in prices of nearly all basic grocery items this week.
Last week, the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) announced that annual inflation slowed to 87.6% in March from 92.3% in February this year.
However, the Zimbabwe dollar continues to lose value against all major currencies at both the official and parallel markets.
On the RBZ auction system this week, the Zimbabwe dollar plunged to ZWL$944.71:US$1 from ZWL$671: US$1 in January this year.
According to <a href="https://businesstimes.co.zw/zimdollar-hits-new-low/">Business Times</a>, on the parallel market, the Zimbabwe dollar was this week trading between ZWL$1 600:US$1 and ZWL$1 700:US$1.
In an interview with Business Times on Wednesday, Consumer Council of Zimbabwe executive director Rosemary Mpofu said the cost of living has gone up. She said:

The cost of living as measured by the CCZ’s low-income urban earner monthly basket for a family of six increased ZWL$489 831 by end of March from a figure of ZWL$441 036 by the end of February, showing an increase of ZWL$48 795.
The reasons for the increase varied from localised high inflationary pressures, exchange rate volatility, and external factors.
Even with smaller-denominated gold coins, trying to curb inflation amid a slump in the country’s currency, we still noticed a huge change in prices.
We see a lot of activity on the parallel market exchange rate which was a major factor in driving inflation.
In terms of the US$ basket, we also noticed a huge change as the basket moved to US$478.82 from US$507.67.
This was a huge increase and it is not good for the consumers.

A survey by Business Times this week shows that the prices of basic grocery items have gone up:
<ul>
<li>2-litre bottle of cooking oil – from ZWL$3 649.99 to ZWL$4 749.99.</li>
<li>2 litre Mazoe drink – from ZWL$3 600 last week to ZWL$4 149.99</li>
<li>white bread – from ZWL$989 to ZWL$1 399.99</li>
<li>a kilogramme of beef – from ZWL$4132.99 last week to ZWL$6 899.99</li>

Cost Of Living Goes Up As Zimdollar Hits New Low

Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ) Commissioner Rosemary Mpofu has been appointed substantive executive director of the consumer watchdog.
Mpofu takes over from the late Rosemary Siyachitema who died of COVID-19 in February 2021.
CCZ spokesperson, Chris Kamba, said Mpofu’s appointment is with effect from 1 December 2022.
A picture of Mpofu posted on the CCZ official Twitter page on Monday was captioned:

Mpofu will work closely with CCZ to ensure the proper implementation of the Consumer Protection Act.

The Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ) has claimed that the cost of living for a family of six people rose to nearly ZWL$21 000 in the month of September up from $14.4 at the end of August.
CCZ attributes the 5.29% rise in the food basket from $10 742.82 by end of August 2020 to $11 311.27 by end-September 2020 to factors including inflation. Said the consumer rights lobby group:
<blockquote>The spike increase in the total figure of the basket is attributed to the price adjustments shown above especially on the non-food items, due to inflation, influence of the exchange rate and in exceptional cases the parallel market.</blockquote>
CCZ also observed that the market has not fully adjusted to the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/07/24/govt-gazettes-si-185-directing-businesses-on-how-to-display-prices-of-their-commodities/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">displaying of prices in both US dollars and RTGS as provided for by Statutory Instrument 185</a> giving businesses room to manipulate the forex rate.
The consumer lobby group encouraged consumers who are buying in United States dollars to be knowledgeable of the prevailing weekly auction exchange rate to avoid being overcharged.
Observably, the cost of living is now too high for many government workers especially teachers who are earning an average of US$30 per month.
Workers have often tried to engage the employer demanding the restoration of their 2018 salaries but results have been disappointing so far.

Cost Of Living For 6 Rise To $21k - CCZ

GMAZ has threatened to stop supplying wholesalers and retailers who are withholding stocks and refusing to accept the bond which is Zimbabwe’s official currency in favour of the USD, The Herald report.
This was communicated by the association’s Chairman Tafadzwa Musarara who said their products which include maize-meal, self-raising flour, salt, rice, sugar beans and soya chunks can be bought using bond notes or mobile money:
<blockquote>We urge all entities distributing our products to accept all local bank notes and use them to buy from us or bank them and pay for our products by bank transfer. Our products can be bought using either cash or mobile money or bank transfers. We demand that the same payment arrangement be extended to consumers.</blockquote>
Musarara further warned the wholesalers and retailers that GMAZ will partner with Consumer Council of Zimbabwe to stop the practice. The bond note has seriously depreciated in value against the greenback which has prompted many businesses to prefer the latter when conducting business rather than the RTGS dollar.

GMAZ Threatens To Stop Supplying Wholesalers & Retailers Rejecting RTGS Dollar

In its monthly report the Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ) said the month on month cost of living increased by 4,6 percent to $697,76 last month from $666,93 in October.
In its report CCZ said price decreases during the period under review were recorded in onions and tomatoes. They said all products in the basket increased prices and they assume it is because of the fuel price, cash shortages and tax on electronic transfers among other factors. Said CCZ:
<blockquote>The food basket increased by $20.63 or 9,7 percent from $211,68 by end of October 2018 to $232,31 by end of November 2018. The price of detergents increased by $10,20 or 48 percent from $21,25 to $31,45. As CCZ we assume that the increase in the total figure of the basket can be attributed to the fuel price, which has gone up, cash shortages, high demand for basic goods, low supplies of goods from most manufacturers, tax increase on electronic transactions (two cents per every dollar). Consumers are urged to always seek a fair deal on the marketplace by ensuring that their rights are observed, as well as reporting any anomalies on the marketplace</blockquote>

Cost Of Living Increases By 4,6 Percent

A survey by the Consumer Council of Zimbabwe has revealed that the cost of living has gone down marginally for a family of six. The cost has dropped by 0.37 percent to $582.92 per month. However t, the  CCZ noted that the marginal decrease may have been caused by promotions for selected goods.
Said the CCZ:
<blockquote>As CCZ we assume that the decrease in prices has been caused by promotions on various commodities in some supermarkets
The CCZ continues to encourage consumers to shop conscientiously and to always buy certified products. Where the products are not certified, to exercise their right to information by carefully examining if the products they are buying are well labelled, packaged and provided with vital information such as manufacturing and expiry dates and ingredients used in the make-up of the products</blockquote>
