Touts from Harare caused a scene on Sunday when they allegedly seized the coffin of their deceased colleague, Darlington Mukono, and dumped it in his uncle’s shop at Nzvimbe Business Centre in Makoni South.
The touts accused Darlington’s uncle, Joshua Hweniwa Mukono, of causing Darlington’s death.
Darlington, who was employed as a kombi driver, had allegedly collapsed and died while on the steering wheel in Harare. Joshua is the brother of Darlington’s father, Edmore.
The rowdy touts, who were singing and dancing, also pasted the deceased’s pictures around the grocery shop’s wall.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/unwanted-cargo-coffin-dumped-in-shop/">The Manica Post</a>, Abisha Mukono, a cousin to Darlington, denied instigating the touts against their uncle, Joshua.
However, Abisha admitted that Joshua stands accused of causing misfortunes to family members. He said:

Darlington passed on September 27 in Harare where he was working as a kombi driver. He left his house in the morning to go to work, and as he was seated at the steering wheel, his colleagues were shocked to hear him screaming, shouting “ahhh maihweee” and collapsed. They rushed him to the hospital, and he died on admission.
The family was informed of his death, and his body was ferried to Nzvimbe last Saturday night. On Sunday morning, his work colleagues created a scene, demanding an explanation for the death of their friend.
They argued that Darlington’s death was not natural, and resultantly took the coffin to Uncle Joshua’s shop.
As a family, we did not know who informed them about previous squabbles and finger-pointing in the family.
No family members accompanied the touts to the shop where they dumped the coffin on the counter. We only learnt through social media that a coffin was dumped in the shop.
Police from Nyazura arrived when the coffin had been returned home. We later buried the body in the afternoon.

Abisha said none of them had engaged the businessman regarding the family disputes, and added that their uncle did not attend the funeral. He said:

In the past, the family once approached a traditional healer in Nyanga who disclosed that our uncle possesses wealth-enhancing charms causing misfortunes in the family.
We did not pay the n’anga after he demanded US$ 12,000 to cleanse the family. Our uncle also did not pay for the services and agreed to leave his car as surety as he was supposed to undergo some cleansing rituals.
On the return journey, he disembarked from the kombi and ran away. We later learnt that he went to the police to file a theft of motor vehicle charge.
He was accompanied by the police to recover the vehicle, prompting the traditional healer to release it. 
He later filed criminal charges, accusing us of kidnapping, assaulting and accusing him of practising wizardry. The courts cleared us of any wrongdoing.

However, Joshua attributed the family drama to longstanding tensions stemming from their father’s polygamous marriage to three wives.
He denied any involvement in bewitching his relatives and accused his brothers of harbouring jealousy toward his success.
Joshua asserted that traditional healers were perpetuating the animosity, blaming him for the misfortunes and poverty experienced by other family members.
He also claimed that $4,500 was stolen from his grocery shop, along with a variety of food items that were reportedly looted and used to provide for mourners at the funeral. Said Joshua:

I do not even know the deceased, having last seen him when he was a toddler. I just heard that he had passed on, and I went there to pass my condolences.
I slept in my shop since thieves usually pounce when there are funerals in the area. The following day, I proceeded to the funeral, and while on my way I was informed that some people had dumped a coffin at my shop.
They broke into the shop and placed the coffin on the counter. They pasted the deceased’s pictures inscribed rest in peace around the shop.
They looted groceries from my shop, saying as the person responsible for Darlington’s death, I should foot the funeral expenses.
They broke into one of the rooms where I keep cash, and stole US$4 570 and two bags of maize. I reported the theft to the police, who came recorded statements before removing the pictures of the deceased from the walls.

Chief Chiduku said the incident was taboo and was puzzled that the affected parties had not reported the matter to him, as he is the custodian of the area.

Touts in Harare were mad at Darlington's uncle and accused him of causing Darlington's death. They put Darlington's coffin in the uncle's shop. Darlington died while driving a kombi. The touts were upset and made a big show at the uncle's shop. The family had issues with the uncle before. The family denied getting the touts involved. The uncle said he didn't know Darlington and denied any involvement in bad luck for the family. He said the touts stole from his shop and blamed him for the funeral costs. The police got involved. Chief Chiduku was surprised no one told him about what happened.

Touts Seize Coffin Of Deceased Colleague And Dump It In Uncle's Shop

An empty coffin, splattered with blood, was discovered at the home of a female police officer in New Msasa suburb, Harare, on Sunday morning, reported <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/traffic-cop-wakes-up-to-find-empty-coffin-splashed-with-blood-dumped-in-her-yard/">ZimLive</a>.
Hatfield police confirmed the unsettling incident in a memo addressed to the Officer Commanding Chitungwiza Police District.
Constable Eronia Payesa, 42, who serves in Harare CBD Traffic, and her family were shocked to find the coffin in their yard when they woke up on Sunday morning. The incident was reported to the police by her husband, Dumisani Mahahani.
According to police, their 10-year-old son, Tinashe Mahahani, was the last family member to enter the yard around 6:30 PM on Saturday after returning from school, and he had left the gate unlocked.
The coffin was discovered by Lauren Simango, 34, who woke up early to clean the yard. Police said the coffin measured 160 cm by 57 cm and was left at the gate but still within the yard. Police added:

The coffin was opened and discovered that there was some blood splashed inside the coffin.

Detectives from the specialised CID Forensic Unit also attended the scene.

A woman police officer in Harare found an empty coffin covered in blood in her yard. The officer, Constable Eronia Payesa, and her family were shocked. The coffin was found by their son. The police are investigating the strange incident. Detectives from a special unit also looked into it. The coffin was left near the gate, and it had blood inside. It was a scary and strange thing to find. The family was frightened and reported it to the police.

Blood-Splattered Coffin Left At Harare Police Officer's Home

A family from Chigodora under Chief Zimunya in Manicaland Province was recently hauled before a community court after it secretly reburied its six-year-old child’s empty coffin after the grave had been tampered with.
The coffin was exhumed three years ago soon after burial and whereabouts of the body remain unknown.
<a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/childs-corpse-unaccounted-for-empty-coffin-reburied/">The Manica Post</a> reported that the father’s child, Joe Mureyani, later passed on under mysterious circumstances and his wife relocated to South Africa.
However, members of the Mureyani family were dragged to Headman Chigodora’s court last Saturday to explain why they did not inform the local leadership following the incident.
The issue has since been transferred to Acting Chief Zimunya’s court and will be heard on 06 August.
Derrick Mureyani begged for forgiveness on behalf of the family when he was asked by Headman Chigodora why they did not report the matter to their Village Head or the Headman. Said Mureyani:

My aunt was walking past the grave when she discovered that it had been tampered with. The grave had been dug and the coffin removed.
This happened a few days after the child’s burial. We told our elders, and we conducted a search but found nothing.
However, days later, someone saw a child’s coffin inside the house of a villager who is mentally challenged. The coffin looked like the one that we had buried the child in.
Police were alerted and the villager was arrested. He was taken to the psychiatric unit where he was evaluated and was released recently.
However, the body is yet to be found up to this day.

He added that the shroud that the child’s body was wrapped in, as well as his clothes that had been put in his grave, were all found inside the coffin.
Headman Chigodora accused the family of performing rituals at the cemetery without notifying the traditional leadership. He said:
<blockquote>
As far as I am concerned, that child’s spirit is roaming around this area because the body is yet to be found. This is probably why your family is suffering from mysterious illnesses.
You had no right to visit the cemetery and perform your rituals without notifying the local leadership.
You reburied the empty coffin on your own without informing anyone. This shows that you were trying to cover up something.
Since you do not want to tell this court why you never reported this matter, it is proper for me to transfer the matter to Chief Zimunya’s court.
</blockquote>
Another family member, Shepherd Mureyani, said the traditional healers they consulted over the matter pointed the finger at the family’s patriarch, Zacharia Mureyani. He said:

After the mysterious disappearance of the child’s corpse, Zacharia ordered Joe to deliver some red cloth to Clever’s home. Joe was not aware that this was a ploy to kill Clever.
However, this backfired on Joe and he died shortly afterwards. This matter was also kept under wraps for three years.
This means that both Joe and his son’s restless spirit are still roaming around this area.

However, Zacharia denied being responsible for the disappearance of the child’s corpse, saying “There are a lot of witches and wizards” in the Mureyani family.

Child's Coffin Exhumed From Grave, Corpse Unaccounted For

The Doves Funeral Services driver involved in the Nyanga empty coffin scandal, Sam Chitsike, was fired on 31 December on allegations of negligence of duty, a report claims.
When contacted for a comment by H-Metro, Doves Holdings group public relations manager, Innocent Tshuma, said full details would be provided after police investigations are completed. Said Tshuma:

I am not in any position to comment on any development at the moment. As we said, we are letting the police do their work and we all make sure this issue is put to bed.

Doves came under scrutiny last year after it gave the relatives of the deceased Maxwell Chimwamurombe an empty coffin for burial.

The body was allegedly kept in a morgue for six months, between March and August last year, long after the coffin supposedly containing Chimwamurombe’s remains had been buried in Nyanga’s Matoropoto Village.
The body was later given a pauper’s burial, at Granville Cemetery.
Chitsike is being accused of concealing the mix-up and later notifying the Chimwamurombe family of the alleged faulty burial.
He, however, claimed that he was merely a transporter and the fault was with the morticians.
Chitsike said he had collected the body from Parirenyatwa, together with two plastic bags, which contained the deceased’s belongings.
Meanwhile, the body was later exhumed from Granville Cemetery for reburial.

Doves "Empty Coffin Saga" Driver Fired

The Insurance and Pensions Commission (IPEC) has launched a probe into the burial scandal involving the family of the late Maxwell Chimwamurombe and Doves Funeral Services (Doves).
Allegations are that there was a mix-up at the funeral parlour that resulted in Doves burying an empty coffin at the Chimwamurombe home in Nyanga.
Doves kept Maxwell’s body in their mortuary for six months before giving him a pauper’s burial at Granville Cemetery in Harare. The body was buried alongside that of an unknown person in the same grave.
The two bodies were subsequently exhumed in November by police investigators, and they were taken to Parirenyatwa hospital mortuary for DNA tests.
In a statement on Monday, IPEC said its interest was drawn by the fact that the matter also involved the insurer, Doves Life Assurance, which it regulates. It said:

The Insurance and Pensions Commission (IPEC) is a statutory body established in terms of the Insurance and Pensions Commission Act (Chapter 24:12), to regulate, supervise and monitor the activities of insurance entities and pension funds.
IPEC is seized with the case of the alleged improper burial of a Doves Life Assurance policy beneficiary, the late Maxwell Chimwamurombe by Doves Funeral Services (Pvt) Ltd.
While IPEC does not regulate funeral service providers such as Doves Funeral Services (Pvt) Ltd, its interest was drawn by the fact that the matter also involved the insurer, Doves Life Assurance, which it regulates.
To this end, IPEC and other stakeholders are seized with this matter. Other stakeholders will be informed of the outcome after the ongoing processes have been finalised.

Insurance Regulator Probes Doves Empty Coffin Scandal

Police on Wednesday exhumed two bodies buried in one grave at Granville Mbudzi Cemetery in Harare hoping to get to the bottom of the Doves Funeral Services (DFS) “empty coffin” mystery.
DSF allegedly buried an empty coffin in Nyanga after the body of the late Maxwell Chimwamurombe was inexplicably left behind at its parlour in Harare.
The end of life industry company is accused of burying Chimwamurombe in the same coffin as a pauper in Harare, after realising its mistake.
Police detectives watched as Doves funeral undertakers carefully dug up a coffin at Granville Mbudzi Cemetery, which they opened to reveal two bodies.
One of those bodies is believed to be that of Chimwamurombe, who died in March in a drowning incident in Mutoko and was supposedly buried in Nyanga.
The coffin was loaded onto the back of a police Ford Ranger and driven to the Parirenyatwa Hospital mortuary.
Forensic experts are expected to extract DNA samples from the body in the hope of identifying the individual buried alongside the pauper.

A Doves spokesman declined to comment, referring ZimLive to a statement issued in October, in which the company said it is “committed to a full investigation of the matter to bring it to completion.”
Sources told ZimLive that a driver who was supposed to be ferrying Chimwamurombe’s body became aware that the coffin was empty during burial at a village in Nyanga.
The driver reportedly informed one of the senior managers at Doves after the burial, but the manager did not take any action.
Instead, Doves is believed to have taken Chimwamurombe’s remains and placed them in the same coffin as a dead man whose body was given to Doves by the department of social welfare to conduct a pauper’s burial.
Chimwamurombe’s family has demanded compensation from Doves.
Police are expected to conduct the second exhumation in Nyanga, to confirm that a coffin was buried without a body.

A Doves Funeral Services (DFS) employee who reportedly exposed the burial mix-up saga, claims his life is now in danger.
In a leaked audio recording, the whistle-blower, who identified himself only as William at the beginning of the audio, exposed an alleged ongoing rot at the funeral parlour.
In the audio, William claims that Nyasha, brother to Dove’s owner, Farai Matsika, almost hit him with a vehicle at the funeral parlour for exposing that the company reportedly buried an empty coffin in error.
Doves then secretly buried the body months later without informing the family.
In the audio recording, William says he has worked for Doves for 17 years and has never witnessed such a burial scandal.
He claims the case has tormented him and he had to approach his bosses after noticing they were still keeping the body months after they picked the anomaly.

The whistleblower alleged that the late Maxwell Chimwamurombe was swept by the river in Nyanga before his body was retrieved downstream near Mutoko last March.
The body was collected by Doves from Parirenyatwa Hospital, but there was confusion which resulted in morticians putting an empty body bag in his coffin before it was carried to Nyanga for burial.
This, according to William, happened between March 16 and 19 this year.
Willian further claimed that one of his superiors, Abisha Chihuri, said he received an instruction from Nyasha to mix Maxwell’s body with that of a pauper, one Ngoni Rwizi whose body came from an old people’s home.
He claimed he made repeated inquiries but started receiving threats from Nyasha who would threaten to fire him without benefits.
William said he then called Farai Matsika who told him the case was being investigated.
According to his narration, the investigations were controversial because no one was excused for investigations to be carried out properly.
He said the Doves team then went to Nyanga “and lied that some body parts had been left at the parlour by mistake.”
He said Doves was willing to pay the family US$75 000 but the family needed an amount over US$100 000.
However, William said he was shocked to later learn that his employer was suing the family for extortion and he was to be a witness in this which he turned down.
William said as the scandal unravelled, Nyasha vanished and was reported to be in South Africa. He was called to come back to Zimbabwe when the scandal was exposed.
He said the morning after Nyasha’s arrival from South Africa the two met in the basement at Doves where Nyasha attempted to hit him with his car.
Upon noticing that he was not getting any help and that his life was in danger, he then reported the matter to the police.
The man says his statement was supposed to be recorded by the police the following day but this did not happen.
Asked by NewZimbabwe.com for comment Doves public relations manager, said the matter was still being investigated.
He also confirmed that there is a William at Doves, but claimed he could not confirm who exactly he was.

Oricious has since appeared in court facing murder charges.
