Forty-one undocumented Zimbabweans were arrested in South Africa for illegal chrome mining.
In a statement, police spokesman Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the suspects will appear before the Mecklenburg Magistrate’s Court this Thursday. Said Ledwaba:

The suspects were apprehended during a joint intelligence operation conducted by the members of the Provincial Illegal Mining Task Team, Provincial Organised Crime Unit together with the RR Undercover Security Company at Ga-Phasha village under Sefateng mine jurisdiction in Mecklenburg policing precinct at about 23:30.
Police received information about illegal mining activities taking place in the area and swiftly reacted. Upon arrival, police found the suspects busy mining a precious metal (chrome) at the mine without authorisation.
When the suspects saw police, they ran into the nearby bushes and others went inside the self-made tunnels to avoid being nabbed.
Police confiscated 12 generators and 10 jackhammers all valued at R170 000 as well as chrome ore worth R1 million from the suspects.

Ledwaba said the suspects are all male and aged between 18 and 43. 41 are undocumented Zimbabweans, one is a Mozambican national and there is also a South African citizen.
Ledwaba vowed that South African police will stop at nothing in ensuring that illegal miners are arrested and prosecuted.

41 Zimbabwean Border Jumpers Arrested In SA For Illegal Chrome Mining

A Chinese mining company Afrochine has restarted mining operations inside Mavhuradonha Wilderness, a World Heritage Site candidate, barely a year after its mining activities were banned by the government.
Foreign-owned companies that include Afrochine Smelting, Earthlink Minerals, and Lebanmon Investments are reportedly exploring for chrome in areas within the site despite a July 12 High Court order barring them from doing so.
Afrochine, a subsidiary of Tsingshan which is building a US$2 billion steel plant at Manhize, now has numerous claims that have already been inspected, with more set to undergo final inspections next January and March, reported NewZimbabwe.com.
A source close to developments told the publication that gravel roads have been constructed for ease of transporting chrome ore. Said the source:
<blockquote>
They are back and we have been made to understand they have the support of some council and Mines Ministry officials.
Efforts to shut them out have been futile as they have constructed their own roads and affected the flora and fauna in the park.
There is a danger that their activities risk the safety of animals as they are leaving open pits and risk us not getting world heritage site status.
</blockquote>
Muzarabani Rural District Council (RDC) Chief Executive Officer Ennie Mutema and Guruve RDC’s Tinos Marisa were arrested last year by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC).
They were nabbed for illegally allowing Allen Mashumba, who had been linked to Chinese nationals’ mining operations, including Afrochine, within the wilderness.
Meanwhile, Afrochine’s Wilfred Motsi said they have not started mining activities in the wilderness. He said:

We have not started anything there, these are people we have been talking about (who misrepresent). Whatever we do we are always guided by the laws of this country, particularly the Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA.

Chinese Chrome Miners Return To Mavhuradonha Wilderness

The Zimbabwean government wants gold, diamond and platinum miners to pay half of their royalties to the government in the commodities themselves and the rest in cash.
Finance and Economic Development Permanent Secretary <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/George_Guvamatanga">George Guvamatanga</a> said the move is aimed at building the southern African country’s mineral reserves.
In a letter sent to the Ministry of Mines on September 2, 2022, Guvamatanga said the Treasury was concerned that the country does not have reserves of the minerals, which “serve as a source of trust in a country given that they carry no credit or counterparty risks,” 
Guvamatanga confirmed the Treasury’s plans in a phone interview with Bloomberg on Friday saying “It’s something we want to implement.” 
Polite Kambambura, deputy mines minister, said in a phone interview that consultations are still being undertaken with miners, including multiple meetings this week. He said:

The whole idea by the Ministry of Finance is that they want to store value of our royalty.

Mining companies that operate in Zimbabwe include subsidiaries of Impala Platinum Ltd., Anglo American Platinum Ltd. and Sibanye Gold Ltd. 
Zimbabwe has the world’s third-largest reserves of platinum and also mines gold, diamonds, nickel, chrome, lithium and coal.

Govt Wants Miners To Pay Royalties In Diamonds, Gold, Platinum

Zimbabwe has banned the export of chrome ore with immediate effect, the country’s Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa told reporters on Tuesday.
Addressing journalists in Harare during a post-cabinet press briefing, Mutsvangwa also said exports of chrome concentrates will be banned from July next year, as there are now enough smelters in the country to ensure that all exports are of ferrochrome ingots. She said:
<blockquote>
A cumulative 22 smelters are now operating and are shared among nine foreign and local companies.
Unless chrome mining capacity is expanded, the smelting operations could soon face the challenge of insufficient feedstock in the form of chrome ore.
In light of the need to safeguard the ferrochrome industry in the above regard, Cabinet approved a total ban on exports of raw chrome ore with immediate effect.
The ban will capacitate current smelters and maximise the value chain to be realised from the country’s abundant resources as spelt out in the National Development Strategy 1.
Cabinet approved the total ban of export of chrome concentrates with effect from July 2022.

Mutsvangwa said the one-year transition was designed to give producers of concentrates time to make suitable arrangements to move up the line for more value addition.
If the 22 smelters cannot cope with expanding production of chrome, then permission can be given for raw chrome exports, but only for a single consignment at a time. Added Mutsvangwa:

Exports of any consignment of raw chrome will only be allowed provided that all the smelters are not in a position to take up and utilise that particular consignment.

Zimbabwe Bans Chrome Ore Exports

Zimasco is set to open a new smelting plant in Mberengwa’s Neta area, with work already having started.
<a href="https://www.vacancymail.co.zw/organisations/zimasco-pvt-limited-jobs-1959/">Zimasco</a> general manager Reason Mandimika said that the smelter is expected to be operational by July 2020 and will create more than 4 000 <a href="http://vacancymail.com">jobs</a>. He said:
<blockquote>By July 2020, the plant should be running, starting with 10 000 tonnes of ore per month to about 20 000 tonnes per month when everything is in place.</blockquote>
Mandimika revealed that Zimasco has over seven million tonnes of ore in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mberengwa" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mberengwa</a> with the new smelter specialised to process friable chrome, which cannot be smelted at the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Kwekwe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Kwekwe</a> smelters.
He added that the Mberengwa smelter will grade the ore to produce chrome which will fetch good money on the market.

Zimsco To Create 4 000 Jobs At New Chrome Smelter

The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has given chrome miners who operated along the Zvishavane-Shurugwi highway a month to fill up the pits they created or to face legal action. <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/08/29/govt-bans-highway-mining-of-chrome/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">This comes after the government ordered the chrome miners to stop their operations citing destruction to the highways and safety concerns for people and cattle.</a>
EMA Midlands Provincial Education and Publicity Officer Simon Musasiwa,
<blockquote>We issued the miners with orders to rehabilitate the pits according to the government directive. The orders are usually for 21 days to a month and we will be making a follow up after the order lapses to check if the miners have complied, if not then we will take legal action.</blockquote>
Zimbabwe Miners’ Federation (ZMF) chairperson, Makumba Nyenje said,
<blockquote>We will be convening a meeting with mining associations in Zvishavane on Thursday to educate each other as miners on mining safety and responsible mining practices and on Friday we will be convening a general council meeting to address some of these issues from a small scale and artisanal mining sector.</blockquote>

EMA Threatens To Sue Highway Chrome Miners, Orders Them To Rehabilitate Pits

The government has ordered all chrome miners to cease their operations along the Shurugwi-Zvishavane Highway due to safety concerns. Outgoing Minister of State for Midlands Provincial Affairs, Owen Ncube said,
<blockquote>This is an irresponsible way of mining. We are not saying people should not mine, but they must do so responsibly. They should do their mining activities away from the road and homesteads…The pits dug here could be a death trap for livestock and other wild animals as well as people who stay in the surrounding areas. So chrome mining along this road is suspended until proper mining methods are applied and far away from the road.
….Imagine if investors were to see this place, activities here show that you are not responsible as miners here and it has the potential to drive investors away. The place has literally become an eyesore. Let’s mine responsibly.</blockquote>
