The body of a woman was discovered in a toilet at Roadport bus terminus in Harare on Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as Janet Bangwayo, a resident of Overspill, Epworth, who had just arrived from South Africa earlier that day.
Bangwayo’s body was first spotted by patrons who were using the food court and had intended to use the toilet facilities.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Harare Province, through spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, has confirmed the details of this tragic incident to <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/woman-found-dead-in-roadport-toilet/">H-Metro</a>. He said:

Police are investigating circumstances surrounding the sudden death of a woman at Roadport.
The body was collected and taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem.

In a separate and unrelated incident, the body of a newborn baby was discovered floating in a sewage pool in Mbizo, Kwekwe, on Tuesday morning. The grim discovery is suspected to be a case of baby dumping.
According to Mbizo’s Ward 11 Councillor Nyika Panyika, the tragic find was made by local boys who were walking along the road and came across the baby’s remains in the sewage pool. He said (via <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/baby-found-floating-in-sewage-pond/">The Herald</a>):

I was one of the first people to arrive at the scene and I can confirm this sad development. The baby was discovered by the children who then notified their parents.
</blockquote>
He said the police attended the scene and took the body to the mortuary.
Kwekwe’s Assistant District Development Coordinator, Reason Machina, who also chairs the District Child Protection Committee, revealed a troubling trend.
Machina disclosed that since April 2024, the committee has received four reported cases of baby dumping and child neglect within the Kwekwe District.
He said that the authorities are exploring ways to effectively curb the growing incidents of baby dumping and child neglect in Kwekwe.

Woman Found Dead In Roadport Toilet

A 36-year-old woman Harare woman appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court on allegations of contravening the Children’s Act, that is, ill-treatment of a child or neglecting a child and young person.
Allegations are that on 04 June 2024, at around 9 PM, the accused person took her 2-year-old son to Makumbe Business Centre in Domboshava and allegedly left him there
The child was seen crying the whole night until he was taken in by well-wishers the following morning at around 5 AM.
He was then taken to hospital as he had been exposed to the cold weather overnight.
The toddler is currently in the custody of his father.
The matter was deferred to 24 June 2024 for bail application.
In an unrelated case, a 27-year-old woman from Dangamvura in Mutare was convicted at the Mutare Magistrate’s Court on charges of contravening the Children’s Act.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), on 27 May 2024, at around 7 AM, the accused person was at home with her son aged 7 whom she accused of stealing some sweets.
She forced him to put his hands on top of a lit gas stove as punishment. The 7-year-old sustained burns on four of his left-hand fingers.
The woman was convicted and sentenced to pay a fine of US$300 or 60 months imprisonment in default of payment.

Woman Abandons Toddler At Shopping Centre Overnight In Cold Temperatures

MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora’s ex-lover Gertrude Chuma is accusing him of neglecting their nine-year-old son and demanded that he pay US$1 500 monthly for his upkeep, reported <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200023661/mwonzora-neglects-9-year-old-son">NewsDay</a>.
Chuma revealed this before Harare magistrate Meenal Narotam yesterday. She said Mwonzora could afford to pay US$1 500 per month because apart from being a political party president, he has a farm in Nyanga and was a director at a law firm and practised as a lawyer.
She alleged that Mwonzora insisted that the minor be enrolled at a private school despite failing to pay school fees in full.
Chuma also told the court that Mwonzora has since blocked her from calling him.
The court granted Chuma her application in Mwonzora’s absence ordering the MDC-T president to pay US$500 monthly as maintenance.
Mwonzora was also ordered to pay his son’s school fees in full.
