ZANU PF, the ruling party in Zimbabwe, has sought Canada’s support in its bid to rejoin the Commonwealth.
Zimbabwe’s membership was suspended in 2002 for breaching the Harare Declaration, leading then-President Robert Mugabe to withdraw the country from the organisation the following year when the Commonwealth refused to lift the suspension.
Since assuming office in 2017 after a popular military coup, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has expressed a desire to rejoin the Commonwealth.
For Zimbabwe to be readmitted, it must adhere to the fundamental values outlined in the Commonwealth Charter, including democracy, the rule of law, and the protection of human rights such as freedom of expression.
Addressing the media after meeting with Canadian Ambassador Adler Aristilde, ZANU PF Secretary for Information Christopher Mutsvangwa said the ruling party has appealed to Canada, an influential Commonwealth member, to support its readmission. The organization promotes peace, democracy, and development, providing a platform for member states to collaborate on various issues.

The Commonwealth also promotes trade and investment among member countries, with various economic partnerships and development programs.

ZANU PF Requests Canadian Support For Commonwealth Readmission

A Canada-based Zimbabwean entrepreneur, Justin Moyo, was allegedly swindled of an estimated 30 000 South African Rands by a Bulawayo man, Dumoluhle Moyo, in a botched restaurant deal.
Dumoluhle’s mother has threatened to sue the diaspora-based man for exposing her family in the botched deal.
Speaking to The Sunday News, Justin said he has not only been belittled but insulted by the family that has vowed never to reimburse him. He said:

It’s been about two years now since this endeavour went south. I entered into a partnership with Dumo because I thought he had a witty character glazed with intelligence. He in fact had an idea to set up a restaurant but lacked funds.
I had access to the funds and I figured it would have been a great endeavour to venture into the business, which would also assist both our families financially.
</blockquote>
Justin said trouble started after procuring the equipment and shipping it to Zimbabwe from South Africa. He said:
<blockquote>
I began experiencing problems with Dumo after the equipment landed in Zimbabwe.
Dumo had told me that he would secure premises where we could establish a restaurant and I was happy with the arrangement.
However, he said he was having trouble securing premises and advised that it would be ideal for us to lease the equipment to someone who would pay us a fixed amount on a monthly basis.
I was happy with that arrangement since the equipment had been laying ‘idle’.

Justin further claimed that he later became aware that the equipment had been sold after Dumo started being elusive and giving excuses each time he would ask about what was happening.
Since then, Justin and Dumo’s relationship has soured and the former is now seeking legal help in getting the family to reimburse him his investment. He said:

I have received more insults and threats more than a dog and all this because I merely asked for my money back.
That is when I engaged his mother who in turn brushed me off like a worthless piece of paper.
</blockquote>
Both Dumo and her mother Nomathemba Mpofu had no kind words for the publication when they were quizzed about the saga. Mpofu said:

So he has decided on going to the newspapers? I will have to sue; I have no time to deal with ignorant people.
So, he paid you to publish this? He will never receive a single cent now because of the damage he has caused.
…  in actual fact the money he says we owe him is nothing, it’s just ZAR1 000. Why is he making a fuss over nothing? He will never get a single cent from me.

Some of the equipment sold included a double chip fryer, flat top, griller, 8 60 litre pots, 8 chafing dishes.

Canada Based Entrepreneur Duped Of R30 000 In Botched Restaurant Deal

The Canadian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Christina Buchan, has expressed concern over the attacks on journalists in Zimbabwe.
Ambassador Buchan noted that media workers continued to face violations, despite them being declared essential workers during the COVID-19 induced lockdowns. She said:
<blockquote>Journalists, even though they were considered essential workers during the pandemic continued to face detention and arrest.
There have also been concerns on proposed laws such as the Cybersecurity and Data Protection Bill, with some human rights activists fearing that the Bill contains some provisions that will obstruct the role of the media in the fight against corruption.
There is also a trend toward increased restrictions on free expression online, resulting from measures taken by some governments to censor or control digital technologies.</blockquote>
Ambassador Buchan made the remarks at a World Press Freedom Day roundtable meeting held at the Canadian ambassador’s residence last Friday.
The roundtable meeting was organised jointly by the Canadian embassy and MISA Zimbabwe.
Participants to the roundtable were drawn from the media, CSOs, legal fraternity and the Zimbabwe Media Commission.
In 2021, MISA Zimbabwe recorded at least 52 journalists that had either been harassed, intimidated, assaulted or jailed.
Meanwhile, Ambassador Buchan noted that there had been some progress though in terms of the regulatory framework, particularly the repeal of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA) and the enactment of the Freedom of Information Act in 2020.

Canadian Ambassador Laments Continued Harassment Of Journalists

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has warned citizens of the existence of a human trafficking syndicate based in Canada which is targeting Zimbabweans desperate for jobs in the services industry.
William Smith, George Harkins and Rooney Cardwell are reported to be working with local fraudsters who are luring Zimbabweans to apply for non-existent jobs in North America and other parts of the world.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade spokesperson Constance Chemwai said reports by some local media outlets claiming that Marriot International Hotels and Resorts in Canada were hiring were false. She said:
<blockquote>The ministry wishes to advise members of the public that Marriot International Hotels and Resorts have never been involved in the recruitment of medical staff.
The ministry further advises that some individuals suspected to be human traffickers are disguising themselves as owners of Marriot Hotels and Resorts and floating job advertisements under the name of Marriot Hotels.
Members of the public are warned that these criminal syndicates are demanding US$400 as documentation and visa processing fees.</blockquote>
Chemwai advised members of the public to check with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and the country’s embassies abroad, to verify the authenticity of any job offers.

Canadian Human Traffickers Targeting Zimbabweans Exposed

A Zimbabwean woman in Canada reportedly tried to commit suicide by jumping from the 3rd floor of a building as she awaits deportation to Zimbabwe, BWNews reports.
Fortunately, the woman survived but she suffered severe injuries and is admitted in hospital. Priscilla Kuda Munangati is now left with the task to raise $5000 to fight the deportation and get permission to remain in Canada. Her friends have reportedly started a gofundme titled “Priscilla Kuda Munangati Fight For Stay Canada” to help Munangati stay in Canada.
Munangati’s friend Munyaradzi Madzinga in appealing for people to help Munangati in her legal battle said:
<blockquote>Fellow brothers and sisters, I come before thee, humbly asking you to be there for one of own; Priscilla Kudakwashe Munangati
Priscilla is fighting for a stay in Canada. She was given a deportation order by Canada Immigration and Border Services a few years back.
During that time, Priscilla was going through a lot of challenges that unfortunately led her into attempted suicide acts. She involuntarily jumped from a 3rd floor apartment building. By God’s grace, she survived but the accident left her with so many injuries and medical complications.
She is currently admitted at Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, AB Canada. She is fighting for her wellness under Canada Border Services remand conditions. Awaiting deportation to Zimbabwe.
Kudakwashe has now been presented with a fighting chance by Canada Immigration and Border Services. She is now eligible to apply for a Pre Removal Risk Assessment (PRRA).
However, the challenge now is legal fees for her to complete the process. Kuda has accrued a balance of close to $5,000.00 in legal expenses.</blockquote>
The gofundme has reportedly raised over $3000 in 24 hours.

Russia through the Russia Federation has donated US$ 1.5 Million to the UNWFP to be used to help 100 000 people in Hwange, Nkayi and Zvishavane districts.
Speaking at the official food handover ceremony, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Zimbabwe, Nikolai V. Krasilnikov said
<blockquote>This assistance represents a good example of the concerted efforts of the international community. It is being implemented with the most effective management of the UN World Food Programme.
From the Russian side it is being reinforced with the investment projects and other forms of cooperation based on the deeply rooted relations of the friendship and solidarity between Russia and Zimbabwe.
On aggregate this assistance is to benefit the Second Republic in its sustainable socio-economic development.</blockquote>

Canada through the World Food Program has availed $3 Million CAD to help the UNWFP feed about 55 000 people in Matopos. In an email to Pindula, WFP said Canada’s donation comes at a crucial time as WFP is working to provide 4.1 million people in Zimbabwe with emergency food assistance.
Canadian Embassy had this to say about the donation:
<blockquote>Canada is standing with the people of Zimbabwe in addressing food insecurity by providing CAD$3 million to the WFP to help 55,000 people in Matobo district, in addition the CAD$1 million provided early in 2019.</blockquote>
WFP Country Director Eddie Rowe thanked the Canadian Embassy for the assistance extended to WFP and said:
<blockquote>WFP would like to thank the Government of Canada for its continued commitment to the people of Zimbabwe. WFP is seriously concerned about the hunger that millions of Zimbabweans are enduring – and the very real prospect that their plight will get worse before it gets better,

Canada Donates $3 Million CAD To Help Feed 55 000 Zimbabweans

<blockquote>Beaver Immigration Consulting is warning African’s to be aware of an online hoax that the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is “begging” African leaders, from Nigeria, Kenya and Zimbabwe for one million new immigrants from each of these countries. The hoax is part of an elaborate scam that is defrauding thousands of dollars (USD) from some of the most vulnerable people on the continent.
Fake news stories continue to appear online and are being shared on Facebook and Twitter that Canada has created “a new Employment and Migration Programme designed for immigrants” from Nigeria, Kenya and Zimbabwe. The posts, which have been shared over 3,000 times on Facebook and Twitter have been declared as fraudulent by several Canadian High Commissions in Africa. The “one million” figure had been drawn from the announcement by the Government of Canada that is will add one million new permanent residents by the end of 2021.
“We continue to receive message from victims of this elaborate scam,” said Nicholas Avramis, a licensed Canadian immigration consultant based out of Cape Town, South Africa. “This is a serious problem in the on the continent. Fraudsters either use fake news stories or contact victims directly offering to secure both employment and work visa permits for Canada. People are being scammed out of thousands in dollars.”
Mr. Avramis states that the Canadian government only allows licensed consultants, known as Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultants (RCIC’s), who are in good standing with the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC), which is the government’s regulatory body, to advise and complete visa application on behalf of clients for a fee. “If an individual or some group offers you immigration services to Canada for a fee it is important that they have a license and can be found on the ICCRC’s website. They also must be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada.”</blockquote>

A group of 200 Zimbabweans could in danger of falling prey to human traffickers after they travelled from Harare to South Africa on Wednesday where they were promised visas to proceed to Canada.
A former Dynamos and Warriors player is reportedly making the travel arrangements for the group.
Concerned over the safety of citizens, officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) visited the pick-up point in a bid to warn them of the perils ahead by their entreaties fell on deaf ears.
A CID officer who spoke to NewZimbabwe.com had this to say:
<blockquote>The law does not stop anyone from leaving the country, we raised awareness to the travellers but all were adamant to go.
We tried to speak to them but the only people who at least listened to our warnings of possible human trafficking were relatives who had come to see them off. They even refused to tell us their final destination.</blockquote>
Human trafficking caused a national outcry in Zimbabwe in 2016 when a group of approximately 200 women were lured to Kuwait with job offers only to be turned into sexual slavery.

200 Zimbabweans Lured To Canada By "Human Traffickers"

A dubious scholarship fund allegedly owned by former Dynamos and Warriors defender James Matola has swindled thousands of dollars from desperate <a href="http://vacancymail.co.za">job seekers</a> over the past four years, a report claims.
The James Matola Foundation is believed to be owned by Matola and his wife Ayanda Brown and is working with a white Canadian, Brad Bino.
Several victims of the scam have spoken to Newsday about their financial loss, all in United States Dollars. One such victim said:
<blockquote>I joined James Matola Foundation last year. I was told to deposit US$175 as registration fee, considering I was promised to get a <a href="https://vacancymail.co.zw/categories/diaspora-jobs/">nursing job in Canada</a>.
I was so excited when I was told the arrangement was to take me along with my wife and children.
Since I joined this foundation, they have been promising to hold a workshop with us firstly in Harare and then in Pretoria, and then leave for Canada.
When they were not showing up, I began to suspect the foundation was not genuine.
We were supposed to attend an indaba in SA, of which bus fares, meals and accommodation were not catered for.
So, I thought it wise to sell my car to cover the costs. To date, that meeting has not been held and Ayanda has been giving excuses that the white man from Canada is not showing up.</blockquote>
To add salt to the injury, the Foundation invited several “beneficiaries” to the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) for a meeting which never took place. Said of the beneficiaries:
<blockquote>Yesterday (Tuesday), Brown told us on WhatsApp that we were going to meet in Harare, but she did not divulge any information concerning the venue.
It was not until in the morning (Wednesday) when she told us to converge at HICC for the meeting.
We tried to call them, but they were not reachable and unavailable on WhatsApp. To our surprise, there was no one from James Matola Foundation who showed up and the hotel staff chased us from the HICC.
We requested to see the manager, who then told us that James Matola Foundation had not even booked for a conference room at HICC.</blockquote>

Zimbabweans are increasingly looking for a way out of the country due to the continued deterioration of the economy.
The high optimism that spiked when former President Robert Mugabe was forced out of office in 2017 has been replaced with despondency and despair.
Thamani Ncube, a banker by profession, was based in Canada before he returned to the country in 2018 regretted his hasty decision in an interview with TimesLive. Said Ncube:
<blockquote>I have seen it all. Starting a company back home is not as easy as it sounds. There is a lot of red tape and before you start one, look at players in the chosen industry. If you are not politically connected, it’s hard to get contracts.

The couple is set to leave Canada for complicit in crimes against humanity for working together in the army for many years.
They appealed the decision on their Pre-Removal Risk Assessment (PRAA), claiming it violated Canada’s Charter of Rights, arguing about interpretations and parsing the language in the law and the UN convention — including the verb tenses used.
The couple left Zimbabwe in 2001 for the United States of America where they lived for 10 years. The duo then left for Canada where they are now set to be deported.
The Federal Court of Appeal ruled last week:
<blockquote>They contended that as they had been excluded on the basis of their complicity by association, the legal basis of the exclusion finding had evaporated.
The exclusion finding was final. There was no further right of appeal, review or recourse under the (immigration act). All of these decisions took place prior to Ezokola.
… The appellants’ exclusion was finally determined on the basis of the applicable law at that time.</blockquote>

Zim Couple Faces Deportation From Canada For Having Served In Mugabe's Army

The Embassy of Canada has called on all parties to promote calm and restraint in responding to the verdict by the Constitutional Court last week. The Canadians also called on the new government to rectify challenges to the electoral process and to enact reforms based on discussions with Zimbabweans.

Zimbabwe’s Constitutional Court has rendered its decision on the merits of a challenge to the conduct and results of the July 30 election decision confirming Emmerson D. Mnangagwa as the winner of the Presidential election.
We commend all actors for their decision to put forward their differing positions in a peaceful manner, respecting the Zimbabwean Constitution and the rule of law. We hope they promote calm and restraint in responding to the verdict. We also take note of calls for dialogue to promote peace such as from the Zimbabwe Council of Churches.
All political parties campaigned on platforms which acknowledged the need for a process of ongoing reform including political, electoral, human rights and economic. Indeed, at observer missions, domestic and international, have pointed to the need to rectify a number of systemic challenges to the electoral process. We call on the new government to move quickly to formulate a plan to identify and enact reforms based on discussions with all Zimbabweans.</blockquote>

Jah Prayzah To Perform In Canada

Speaking to The Herald, Guruve South legislator Patrick Dutiro confirmed that Canadian investors had approached his constituency looking for 10 000 hectares of land for marijuana (mbanje) farming.
He said they gave the investors two options which include either to contract someone or to secure land. Said Dutiro:
<blockquote>We have two options with our investors since they want land, we have convinced them to come up with an out-grower schemes for contract farming in Guruve or to secure them land in Dande. Currently there are in talks with a Guruve white farmer to seal the deal. Previously before marijuana farming was legalised, we had advised the investors to develop a non-intoxicating seed which, however, could meet the same purposes for laboratory use.</blockquote>
Several parts of Mashonaland Central are climatically ideal for marijuana farming.

Canadian Investors Looking For Mbanje Farming Land In Guruve

Addressing journalists in Harare yesterday, Grain Millers’ Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) chairman, Tafadzwa Musarara said the association will be sending a 12-member delegation to Canada to sign a 200 000-tonne wheat deal amid reports the country was left with wheat reserves for 90 days.
Musarara said the delegation will travel from May 12 to May 22 and will meet Canadian government officials, wheat farmers and bakers. Said Musarara:
<blockquote>We are sitting on a 90 days’ supply and that means the imports will be coming in before we run out. There will be a smooth changeover from local to foreign wheat. Following the government’s policy of Zimbabwe is open for business, I am pleased to advise that we are currently working with the Canadian Embassy, which is in the world’s top five of wheat producers.</blockquote>

Zimbabwe To Import Wheat From Canada, Country Left With Wheat Reserves For 90 Days

In a statement issued yesterday, the Canadian Embassy in Zimbabwe yesterday condemned the political violence that took place in Bulawayo among MDC-T party members. More than 15 people were injured when rival factions clashed at the party offices.
Part of the statement reads:
<blockquote>The Embassy of Canada in Zimbabwe condemns all forms of politically motivated violence. We encourage all actors to engage peacefully and demonstrate both respect and restraint in their conduct.</blockquote>
MDC-T is embroiled in a succession war between the party’s deputy president Dr Thokozani Khupe and president Advocate Nelson Chamisa. Twelve people, including Bulawayo deputy Mayor Gift Banda and Ward 1 Councillor Mlandu Ncube, appeared in court on Wednesday in connection with the Sunday violence.

Canada Condemns MDC-T Violence, Calls For Tolerance

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has added his voice to those condemning the appointment of President Robert Mugabe as the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) goodwill ambassador for non-communicable diseases. The Canadian PM said that he initially thought the news was a bad joke and described the move as “unacceptable.”
Speaking at a press briefing, Trudeau said:
<blockquote>When I heard of Robert Mugabe’s appointment… quite frankly, I thought it was a bad April Fool’s joke
It is absolutely unacceptable and inconceivable this individual would have a role as a goodwill ambassador for any organization, much less the World Health Organization.</blockquote>
Under mounting pressure over the appointment, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the UN health agency, said he was “rethinking” his decision.
