Former editor of “The Herald”, Ceasar Zvayi has warned Zimdancehall artist Winky D that henceforth, he should expect to be treated as a politician, and not a musician.
Zvayi was commenting on Winky D’s lyrics on his song Vashakabvu Part 2 which he belted out at his Ghettocracy show at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) on 31 December 2023. <a href="https://x.com/caesarzvayi/status/1741789085042114906?s=20">He wrote on X</a>:

If this is music, then my grandmother is a virgin! This lightweight has thrown down the gauntlet asazoti mavara angu azare ivhu. Apinda mupolitical ring literally &amp; metaphorically… Just saying.
</blockquote>
In the song, Winky D touched on the disputed August 2023 elections and also claimed that his songs have been banned on local radio.
He also bemoaned the harsh economic situation that has forced millions of Zimbabweans to leave the country in search of greener pastures. The lyrics include:

Vana venyu veZimbabwe vachiri kunyunyuta.
Vofararira kwese kwese kutsvaga maguta.
Mumwe oti ndakahwinha, umwe oti wakabvuta.

In response to Zvayi, Chofamba said artists should be allowed to freely express themselves and to speak truth to power. He said:

Chief, you’re just expressing the typical intolerance of the authoritarian Zanu-PF regime towards artists who would dare make any social commentary that’s unfavourable to it!
You stand on the side of power so you will never appreciate any artist who speaks truth to power. You only appreciate such artists when they’re foreign or when the powers they address are also foreign.
So let’s not pretend you come with any objective lens to critically appreciate Winky D’s music!

Zandatoto echoed similar sentiments, saying it’s wrong to try to gag musicians. He wrote:

The thinking is government should not be questioned, citizens should not express themselves on day-to-day challenges. He wouldn’t have had problems if Winky D were to sing Patati Patata
</blockquote>
Patati Patata is a collaboration song between Zimbabwean urban grooves artist Roki, Congolese Soukous singer Koffi Olomide and Tanzanian Afro-pop artiste Rayvanny that was released in August 2021.
In the song, Koffi chanted “ED Mnangagwa number one” in reference to President Emmerson Dambudzo (ED) Mnangagwa.
Meanwhile, human rights lawyer Siphosami Malunga told Zvayi to “allow musicians to sing”. He wrote:

</blockquote>
Winky D’s lyrics often contain political commentary, touching on social problems including injustice, poverty, and corruption.
It is not clear why authorities and ZANU PF-linked individuals don’t like Winky D’s compositions.
On 4 March 2023, police officers stormed the stage during Winky D’s live performance and shut down his show to intimidate him for his critical commentary.

Former Herald Editor Caesar Zvayi Threatens Winky D Over "Political" Lyrics

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Caesar_Zvayi/">Caesar Zvayi</a>, a former Editor of The Herald, has said it would have been more meaningful if Zimbabwe’s renowned international musician, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Thomas_Mapfumo/">Thomas Mukanya Mapfumo</a> had held his last show in Mbare, Harare, where he began his career. Mapfumo who now resides in the United States, held one of his final performances in Leicester in the United Kingdom on June 24, 2023. In tweets that were seen by Pindula News, Zvayi said Mapfumo’s music would have a stronger impact on Zimbabweans living in the country. He said:

I understand Thomas Mapfumo’s swansong was on June 24 in the UK before a largely Caucasian audience. There are two things wrong with his decision to retire in Albion. Firstly, he cut his music teeth in Mbare, wouldn’t Stodart Hall or Rufaro have been better statements?
Secondly his genre Chimurenga does it connect more with Mr Brown or VaChigwenhere? I grew up on his music, as did many others here in Zim. I do not buy stories of his alleged persecution here that saw him fail to bury even his ride or die, Lancelot. Horomba yarasika iyi!

According to attendees at the Leicester show in the UK, Dr Thomas Mapfumo appeared frail and elderly. He required assistance to reach the stage and a chair was provided for him to sit. One of the attendees said this was not the energetic Mapfumo who typically performs on stage. The show was attended by over 300 people, and Mapfumo reportedly pocketed approximately 12,000 pounds from gate takings.
Mapfumo revealed in May this year that he will be retiring from stage performances after holding his farewell show on June 24th in the UK. His over 50-year-long career has been marked by his no-holds-barred criticism of the colonial Rhodesia government and later, ZANU PF.
In a video circulating online, Mapfumo stated that he personally organised the show in England using his own finances to thank his fans for their support. He also clarified that he will not be performing at another show that features Winky D and Jah Prayzah, stating that he failed to agree with the organisers and the two artists.
Mapfumo, who has been an ardent critic of the ZANU PF government, was forced out of the country by former President Robert Mugabe and has continued to criticise the incumbent, Emmerson Mnangagwa, for his poor human rights record and maladministration. Mapfumo last performed in Zimbabwe in April 2018 at a show called the ‘Homecoming Bira.’

Exiled former cabinet minister, Jonathan Moyo has suggested that 31 July 2020 would be eventful hence the need for the ruling ZANU PF to memorise it.
Many voices in the country have been rallying the citizenry to revolt against the government over human rights violations, and the worsening economic and humanitarian crisis.
31 July is a day before the second anniversary of August 1 shootings during which soldiers shot and killed opposition MDC protesters who had thronged to the streets over the alleged manipulation of the 2018 presidential election in favour of President Mnangagwa.
A Motlanthe Commission was instituted and made recommendations which are yet to be implemented. Moyo posted on Twitter saying:

The party responded saying it will still be in power yonder 31 July 2020. It responded:

In response to Moyo’s tweet, Caesar Zvayi, former Zimpapers editor echoed the words of the former minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development himself during his tenure in government. He said:

If the planned protest is abt pressing Gvt to improve livelihoods, fair &amp; fine, but if its about regime change, forget &amp; smile. Moyo responded saying:

In 2015, responding to then MDC spokesperson Obert Gutu, Moyo suggested that ZANU PF would govern forever. He said:

Excelgate, a book released by exiled former Cabinet Minister, Professor Jonathan Moyo purportedly to expose how the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission manipulated the 2018 elections has been reviewed and described as a joke by Muckraker. The publication said:
<blockquote>MUCKRAKER congratulates Jonathan Moyo on the launch of his book, Excelgate, which he says is an expose on the how the election was stolen. This must be the first time in the history of rigging that an election was stolen using a basic Microsoft spreadsheet. He hopes to convince the gullible by selling them the book for US$35. We hope for more books detailing how things like how the Daily News was bombed and banned, and how the ZBC was turned into an endless show. One is grateful that this publication is being released just in time for parents who were wondering which comics to buy for their children this Christmas.

Jonathan Moyo's Book Exposing How ZEC Rigged Elections Described As A "Joke"

Senior Herald editor, Caesar Zvayi has left the Zimbabwe Newspaper Group (Zimpapers), 11 months after he was removed as editor of the state-run paper. Speaking to Zim Live, Zvayi confirmed his departure saying:
<blockquote>I’m going home. I’ll probably try something different, perhaps return to academia as well, but we’ll see.</blockquote>
Zvayi’s Timeline:
<ul>
<li>He joined The Herald in November 2004 but left in July 2008 to be a lecturer in Gaborone, Botswana.</li>
<li>At the USA’s instigation, Ian Khama ordered his deportation since he was viewed as a government agent.</li>
<li>Became night editor and then deputy editor of The Herald and replaced Innocent Gore as editor in a shake-up ordered by the new information minister Jonathan Moyo in 2013.</li>
<li>Removed when Information Minister, Monica Mutsvangwa was put in charge of the Ministry in 2018, assumably for covering a story on rape charges against Mutsvangwa’s son, Neville.</li>
<li>Joram Nyathi took over from him in December last year but was sacked barely a month later for alleged “poor editorial judgment” after failing to put President Mnangagwa’s picture on the front page after he returned from a foreign trip.</li>
<li>Nyathi’s deputy, Tichaona Zindoga, took over on an acting basis but was fired last month for allegedly travelling to South Africa for a meeting with the exiled former Cabinet minister Saviour Kasukuwere.</li>
<li>Zimpapers editorial executive, William Chikoto, is currently the acting Herald editor.</li>

A senior editor at the government-controlled media company Zimpapers has said that the soldier beating women in a video that went viral yesterday is actually not a soldier.
Caesar Zvayi, who is Editor at Large in charge of special projects at Zimpapers has said he does not believe the man is a real soldier. He called for the law to take its course in bringing the man and his plain clothes colleague to book.
The video which circulated widely yesterday, shows a soldier assaulting three women with a huge stick. It also shows two men being made to crawl on the ground on all fours to some place.

<blockquote>This is barbaric. I suspect Selous Scout tactics. I do not believe these are real soldiers. Putting on military fatigues does not make one a soldier. The ZDF should get to the bottom of this! Whoever these guys are, the law must take its course.</blockquote>

'Soldier Beating Women In Video Is Not a Soldier', Zimpapers Senior Editor Says

The Herald editor Caesar Zvayi and his Sunday Mail counterpart Mabasa Sasa were removed from their positions in an editorial reshuffle at Zimpapers.
Zvayi’s former deputy Joram Nyathi is the new editor of The Herald, and will be deputised by the newspaper’s political editor, Tichaona Zindoga. Victoria Ruzvidzo, who was managing editor of The Herald, becomes the editor of The Sunday Mail. She will be deputised by Ranga Mataire, who was a senior reporter for The Southern Times. Ruth Butaumocho, who was gender editor for The Herald,  fills Ruzvidzo’s managing editor position.
Zvayi will assume a new position of editor at large, in charge of special projects “including overseeing of well researched political and economic content as well as special revenue generating supplements.” Sasa will assume a newly-created position of head of content syndication. His new assignment is to create and run a “news agency business of the group that will distribute content across all titles and to external partners.” ZimLive.com reports that no editorial changes are expected at Zimpapers Bulawayo, where Innocent Madonko will stay on as editor of The Chronicle while Limukani Ncube heads The Sunday News.

The Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Service is reported to be split into two camps with <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/10/25/factions-re-emerge-in-zanu-pf/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">one camp supporting President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the other supporting Vice President Constantino Chiwenga.</a> According to the weekly publication, The Zimbabwe Independent, Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa and Permanent Secretary Ndavaningi Nick Mangagwana are pro-Mnangagwa and are working on replacing editors at Zimpapers owned publications, The Herald, The Chronicle, The Sunday News and The Sunday Mail with their own appointees. However, Deputy Minister Energy Mutodi is reported to be fighting in Vice President Chiwenga’s camp and is fighting against the dismissal of the editors.
Sources who spoke to the Independent said,
<blockquote>Monica Mutsvangwa, a Mnangagwa ally, wants Zimpapers to stop covering Chiwenga, but (presidential spokesman) George Charamba, a Chiwenga ally, is resisting. So a fight has erupted over Mutsvangwa and her permanent secretary Nick Mangwana’s bid to fire current editors seen as controlled by Charamba and doing Chiwenga’s bidding and replace them with their own appointees. A list of new editors has been drawn, but the issue has divided the Ministry of Information largely along the faultlines of the two factions</blockquote>
Writing on Twitter last night, Mutodi said
<blockquote>Those fighting Caesar Zvayi (Editor-In-Chief for The Herald) Zimpapers are not for the good of the Herald. Not for the good of ED government. We stand for meritocracy, not grudges, nepotism &amp; proxy leadership.</blockquote>

Information Minister Speaks Against Sacking Of Herald Editor As Zanu-PF Factions Battle For Media Control

Editor-in-chief of The Herald, Caesar Zvayi said under President Mnangagwa’s admnistration, no one was dictating to him, he was making his own informed decisions.
Zavyi said this during the Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services meeting with editors from the print media at Munhumutapa Building yesterday. He was responding to Zimbabwe Independent editor, Dumisani Muleya, who alleged that Zimpapers was not independent of the ministry’s interference. Said Zvayi:
<blockquote>No one is talking to me. I make my own independent editorial decisions. There was a time when there was interference when there was a certain professor but so far so good, the buck stops with me.</blockquote>
Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services permanent ministry praised Zimpapers for its pluralism and accommodating different people in its radio programmes.

Govt Does Not Tell Herald What To Report- Caesar Zvayi Says He Makes Own Independent Editorial Decisions

The Herald’s Editor-in-Chief Caesar Zvayi said the opposition. particularly the Nelson Chamisa led MDC-T faction does not give them their diaries hence they cannot cover their political rallies.
Zvayi said this while briefing the European Union Election Observer Mission media analyst Mr Javier Gutierrez on the operations of Zimpapers’ flagship with regards to elections. He said all political parties and presidential candidates were free to approach The Herald for interviews or request coverage for their rallies. Said Zvayi:
<blockquote>We are open to all contestants, whether Zanu-PF or MDC; all parties that successfully filed at the Nomination Court. All we want from them (political parties) is their schedule and then we deploy our reporters, which we have already been doing. The challenge we are facing is that opposition parties — and by opposition I don’t mean only MDC Chamisa — don’t give us their diaries. We are fully aware of our obligations under the Electoral Act and the requirements of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission.</blockquote>

MDC Chamisa Doesn't Give Us Their Diaries: The Herald Justifies Biased Political Coverage

Local Government Minister <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Saviour_Kasukuwere">Saviour Kasukuwere</a> is demanding $7m in defamation damages from the government-controlled Zimpapers media group. In papers filed at the Harare High Court on Monday, Kasukuwere is citing three reporters at The Herald, the paper’s editor <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Caesar_Zvayi">Caesar Zvayi</a> and his <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/The_Sunday_Mail">Sunday Mail</a> colleague Mabasa Sasa.
Kasukuwere becomes the second minister to sue <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimpapers">Zimpapers</a> and its editors in recent days after higher education minister Jonathan Moyo also took legal action against the company. Describing himself as a businessman and a veteran of the Mozambique campaign, Kasukuwere says several articles published by the Zimpapers two titles since early September this year were false and defamatory.
The articles alleged corruption in the allocation of land and housing stands in and around Harare including claims that land meant for youths was irregularly sold to preacher <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Walter_Magaya">Walter Magaya</a>.
