A fire incident that occurred on Wednesday night disrupted flight operations at the Victoria Falls International Airport earlier today.
In a statement, the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) Director General, Elijah Chingosho, confirmed that the fire was caused by an electrical fault in the basement of the Air Traffic Control Tower at the airport. Said Chingosho:

The Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) wishes to apologise to all its valued customers for the flight operations disruption which occurred this morning due to a fire incident as a result of an electrical fault in the basement of the Air Traffic Control Tower at Victoria Falls International Airport.
The fire, which occurred on the evening of 10 July 2024, was contained without further incident or damage, and no one was injured.
The Authority would like to advise that the situation has normalised and that flight operations have since been restored as of 1018hrs this morning.
The delays and inconvenience to all valued operators, passengers and other stakeholders are sincerely and deeply regretted.

Fire Incident Disrupts Flights At Victoria Falls International Airport

Eswatini Air and Zambia Airways have obtained foreign operator permits (FOPs) from the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ).
The permits allow the two airlines to operate passenger and cargo operations in and outbound of Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare.
In his remarks on the latest development, CAAZ Director General Elijah Chingosho said:

We are excited about the positive prospects for 2023 in line with the national Vision 2030 and guided by the National Development Strategy 1(NDS1) as we implement the government-initiated Open Skies Policy, positioning our economy for more trade, investment and tourism.
</blockquote>
He said further details on the commencement date and frequencies of flights will be announced by the respective Airlines in due course.

Eswatini, Zambian Airlines Get Permits To Operate In Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe’s only gold exporter, Fidelity Printers and Refineries, the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) and security agents stationed at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport are being investigated over a scheme by Henrietta Rushwaya to smuggle 6kgs of gold to Dubai on October 26.
A number of people including businessman Ali Muhamad, two State security agents and two top policemen have since been arrested over the matter.
Detective Chief Inspector Michael Chibaya told the court this Tuesday that they want to establish how Rushwaya and her accomplices got the 99.99 percent purified gold, which can only be obtained from Fidelity Printers and Refiners in the country.
He added that CAAZ was involved after it emerged that CCTV at the airport was switched off during the attempt to smuggle out the 6kg of gold to Dubai. Chibaya said:
Investigations are still underway and more arrests are to be made.
<blockquote>The gold which was recovered had a purity of 99 percent and can be done by a reputable refinery and in Zimbabwe, it is Fidelity Printers.
When Rushwaya was arrested, amongst the documents she produced was a gold dealing agent permit issued to Ali Japan 786 Limited where Ali is one of the directors. Investigations are called to determine whether there is a relationship between Rushwaya, Ali Japan and the gold recovered.
At the RGM Airport, the responsible authorities manning the CCTV are indicating that there was no ZESA between 10am and 2pm.</blockquote>
He added that investigations indicated that there was a power for between 10 to 20 minutes during which the digital CCTV was allegedly tampered with.
The state believes that Steven Tserayi and Raphious Mufandauya could have influenced CAAZofficers to switch off the CCTV to conceal the crime.

Fidelity Printers, CAAZ, Dragged Into Rushwaya Gold Smuggling

Civil Aviation Authority Of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) has said flight numbers in and out of Zimbabwe are increasing after 5 Airlines resumed flights to and from Zimbabwe since the turn of the new month, the Daily News reports.
This was revealed during a tour of the  Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport which was conducted by Information minister Monica Mutsvangwa when CAAZ Authorities said they have experienced a 30% load on the airlines that are coming to Zimbabwe.
CAAZ Director of AIrport Tafadzwa Guzha said:

So far, we have Emirates Airlines, Ethiopian Airways has continued on daily flights, we have Kenyan Airways operating three times a week, Rwanda Air which is operating four times a week, South African Airlink and Fast Jet.So… the numbers have been encouraging, especially when you look at the Harare and Johannesburg route. Fast Jet has been having almost full loads on a daily basis with their twice a day flights.</blockquote>
Guzha also took the time to explain the COVID-19 containment measures employed by CAAZ to try and curb the spread of the novel coronavirus and said:
<blockquote>Starting from the departure side we have a disinfecting booth at the entrance of the terminal building and also where we are restricting entrance to bona fide travellers and staff.
We also have the disinfection of luggage that takes place as people are coming in and then at the check-in point, we have physical distancing signage on the floor to promote social distancing. We have also installed shields at the checkpoint counters to protect the staff from the spread of Covid-19.

Flight Numbers Increasing - CAAZ

Motorists who are avoiding a roadblock erected by state security forces along the Seke road in Harare are reportedly parting with amounts ranging from ZWL$10 and $20 to bypass a “tollgate” that has been erected by people who know the motorists have limited options, The Herald reports.
The road that is used by motorists to bypass the roadblock is reportedly barricaded by stones and logs and cars are only allowed to pass if they are not suspicious of them.
The guards manning the illegal tollgate claim they are from CAAZ and the road is prohibited because the area is used to host aeroplane transmission antennas.
However, when asked if they were making a killing charging motorists who usually flock in during the peak hour, the fake CAAZ guards said:
<blockquote>It is quite tricky sometimes as the road is used by people of different backgrounds even high ranking officials. As we are talking to you we actually don’t know who you are. However, we have motorists who regularly pass by and mushikashika whom we charge.</blockquote>

Motorists Evading A Road Block Along Seke Road Parting With $20 To Pass Through An Illegal "Tollgate" - Report

The Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) is investigating reports that a private charter plane carrying an Italian national from Zimbabwe was on Wednesday turned away by authorities at OR Tambo International Airport in South Africa.
The plane, a Beech 200 Super King Air owned by Halsted Aviation, was allowed to take off from the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Robert_Gabriel_Mugabe_International_Airport" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport</a> on April 1 and landed at OR Tambo at 12.30 PM.
CAAZ acting spokesperson David Kanyandu said investigations were already underway as only cargo planes are allowed into the country. He said:
<blockquote>We saw the report on social media and since yesterday, I have been unsuccessfully trying to establish the truth. We are yet to find out whether or not the plane was from Zimbabwe.
If that is true, we have to find out the circumstances under which it flew to South Africa.
Our airspace is watertight and, for now, we are only allowing cargo planes that bring in emergency supplies like medical equipment, face masks, sanitisers and, other life-saving goods.
We also allow some other emergency flights, but I have no details of whether that particular plane was on the list of those authorised for the day.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, the government on Friday gazetted Statutory Instrument 86 of 2020 which designated Ethiopian Airways the sole airline operating in Zimbabwe to bring in ventilators, face masks, sanitisers and, other essential medical requirements.

CAAZ Investigates Charter Plane Turned Back At OR Tambo

The contractors who are working on refurbishing RGM Airport have completed 96% of the foundation, The Sunday Mail reports.
This was revealed by CAAZ’s public relations and communications manager Mrs Annajulia Hungwe who said:
<blockquote>The foundation works are now on 96 percent, with the ground floor at 62 percent and concrete works on schedule.
We are facing few setbacks but we are moving as planned, and we are currently on the 30 percent mark, which is on track</blockquote>
The project started in 2018 and CAAZ says the rehabilitation works are on course.

Airport authorities have dismissed a picture that circulated on social media claiming that a Fastjet aircraft failed to land at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport on Wednesday night due to load shedding.
Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) public relations and communication manager, Anna Julia Hungwe, told The Herald that the reported incident could have happened in January this year, and quickly rectified, and not recently. She said:
<blockquote>Nothing of the sort ever happened to fastjet. The airport manager at JM (Nkomo) said there was nothing like that.
Social media has its own way of doing things; this world is full of people who want to see things the other way.
If anything like power outages happens, air traffic control will simply say to an airline ‘you can’t land at a given airport and our alternative is Harare or Bulawayo’.</blockquote>
Hungwe said that CAAZ is always ready for power outages and has generators on standby for critical areas. She said:
<blockquote>Yes, we have power outages, remember the country does not have adequate electricity, but we have generators that light all critical areas immediately.
We are always ready for power outages. Some people are twisting it and making it appear as if Zimbabwe should not be visited.
If we had such power challenges, airlines should be complaining but they are coming; and landing and departing.
So we wonder what people are saying. There is no way air traffic control can let an airline go and land at an airport that does not have electricity.</blockquote>
Energy and Power Development Minister, Fortune Chasi admitted to receiving “some dark pictures”, and he said that there was a need for uninterrupted power to airports, through solar.

'Dark Airport Pictures' Captured In January, Not Recently - CAAZ Official

A KLM airlines cargo plane on Monday dropped a flap over Chitungwiza, but managed to land without incident at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.
The mishap was last night confirmed by Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) public relations and communications manager Anna Julia Hungwe. She said:
<blockquote>The aeroplane dropped a flap in Chitungwiza, but landed safely at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.</blockquote>

… a type of high-lift device used to increase the lift of an aircraft wing at a given airspeed. Flaps are usually mounted on the wing trailing edges of a fixed-wing aircraft.

KLM Cargo Airlines Plane Drops 'Flap' Over Chitungwiza

Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) workers reportedly embarked on a strike on Thursday citing poor working conditions.
The workers allegedly gathered in the committee room at the RGMI Airport the whole day.
However, the management refused to address the workers, reports indicate.
CAAZ spokesperson Anna Hungwe dismissed the claims that workers are on strike, saying:
<blockquote>There is nothing like that. Of course, we had a normal meeting like any other company, but all of our staff reported for duty today (yesterday).</blockquote>
An employee who spoke to Newsday said that the strike is in the form of a sit-in. Said the disgruntled worker:
<blockquote>We are staging a sit-in, demanding long overdue issues to be addressed by the management and the minister.
The agreed cost of living adjustment starting from March has not been implemented after executive management included, were trying to ride on employee agreements.</blockquote>
The workers say that they are now incapacitated and can no longer afford to travel to work. They also accuse the human resources director of practising nepotism.

Civil Aviation Workers Stage Sit-in At RMGI Airport

At least two people died and seven others left in critical condition after succumbing to pressure during a 10 km run that was a pre-requisite in job recruitment at the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) in Harare on Tuesday.
The two died at Parirenyatwa hospital yesterday after suffering health complications during a selection road run at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport. CAAZ confirmed the deaths when contacted by The Herald and said the families of the deceased had been informed of their deaths. CAAZ said the recruitment was part of its efforts to equip its Aviation Security Department.
An inside source told the Mail and Telegraph that twelve people who were listed candidates for security personnel posts, fainted during the course of the 10km run around mid-day on Tuesday. The source said the twelve were rushed to Parirenyatwa Group Of Hospitals and two of them later died.
