Former United Kingdom Prime Minister (PM), Boris Johnson has pulled out of the race to succeed Liz Truss saying he cannot unite the warring Conservative Party.
Johnson had the public support of 59 MPs but required 100 to continue in the contest.
But Penny Mordaunt, Rishi Sunak’s only remaining rival in the race to become the next prime minister – signalled she would not withdraw from the process, according to UK-based The Telegraph.
The race is now wide open for Sunak, the former chancellor, who has more than 140 Tory MPs backing him. Mordaunt lags behind with the public support of 26.
Johnson said he had “reached out” to leadership rivals Sunak and Mordaunt to see if they could work together in the national interest, but it had not proved possible.
In a statement, Boris insisted he had secured the 100 nominations needed to get onto the ballot paper, and that if he stood there was a, “very good chance” he would be back in Downing Street by the end of the week. He added:

But in the course of the last days I have sadly come to the conclusion that this would simply not be the right thing to do. You can’t govern effectively unless you have a united party in Parliament.
And though I have reached out to both Rishi and Penny – because I hoped that we could come together in the national interest – we have sadly not been able to work out a way of doing this.
Therefore I am afraid the best thing is that I do not allow my nomination to go forward and commit my support to whoever succeeds.

While Sunak is now the clear favourite, a source from Mordaunt’s campaign told The Telegraph that she was “still running” for the post.
Sunak said he would always be “grateful” to Johnson over Brexit, the vaccine rollout and the response to Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine.

Boris Johnson Pulls Out Of Race To Replace Liz Truss As Prime Minister

British Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mrs Melanie Robinson, has said it is good to see some shops in the United Kingdom stocking products from Zimbabwe.
She also spoke of arrangements in place between Zimbabwe and the UK to facilitate trade between the two nations. Said, Robinson:
<blockquote>
Good to see this visit so soon after ZITF by ZimTrade who are exploring opportunities for exporters. Our UK-Zim trade agreement is in place, giving exporters tariff &amp; quota-free access to the UK. horticultural producers are among those benefiting; keen to see others join them.
</blockquote>
Her remarks were in response to a post by ZimTrade which indicated that it was conducting a survey in the United Kingdom. Read the post:

Before the turn of the millennium, the UK used to be a huge destination for Zimbabwean products.  
The composition of Zimbabwe’s exports to the UK were diamonds, mange tout peas, black fermented tea, oranges, unmanufactured tobacco, fresh avocados, sculptures, fresh peaches, fresh nectarines, fresh raspberries, passion fruit and jewellery, among others. 
Zimbabwe’s exports to the UK have been increasing in recent years with ZimTrade estimating them to have increased by 276 per cent to US$112 million in 2018 from US$30 million in 2012.
The southern African country could become a strategic partner for London, especially in this post-BREXIT era.

British Ambassador Pleased As Some UK Shops Stock Products From Zimbabwe

France has threatened to cut the United Kingdom (UK) off from energy supplies if the terms of the Brexit deal aren’t stuck to.
The country’s Europe minister, Clement Beaune, said the agreement had to be “implemented fully” otherwise “we will take European or national measures to exert pressure on the UK”.
Asked what actions could be taken, Beaune pointed to both UK exports to France and European energy exports to the UK. He added:
<blockquote>
The UK depends on our energy exports, they think they can live alone while also beating up on Europe and, given that it doesn’t work, they engage in aggressive one-upmanship.
</blockquote>
Beaune was speaking after the government in London announced last month it had approved just 12 of the 47 applications it received from French small boats to fish in British waters.
That fury was further stoked in a later announcement by the Jersey government that of 170 licence applications it had received from French boats, 75 had been rejected.
Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands, between England and France. It is a self-governing dependency of the United Kingdom.
Earlier this year, the French government made similar threats of “retaliatory measures” as part of a fishing dispute with Jersey.
It included a threat that it could cut off electricity to the British Crown Dependency, which receives 95% of its electricity from France through three undersea cables.
France accused Jersey of dragging its feet over the issuing of licences to French boats under the terms of the UK’s post-Brexit trade deal with Brussels.
Meanwhile, Brexit minister Lord Frost hit back at the French government’s energy warning.
He said it was “unreasonable” to suggest the UK was acting in bad faith when it came to allocating post-Brexit fishing licences to French boats.
Lord Frost said London had been “extremely generous” to European Union requests and he questioned why the EU “resorts to threats quite quickly”.
Speaking at a fringe event at the Conservative Party conference in Manchester, Lord Frost said:

For all the frustrations of the last 18 months, and particularly since January, I don’t think we as a country have resorted to those sort of threats.
I know people get frustrated with the way we behave but we have not made those kinds of direct threats to our neighbours.
The vaccine export ban earlier this year is another area where the EU resorts to legalism, it resorts to threats quite quickly and I just think that is not how we should behave.
We don’t, and I don’t see why our neighbours feel they have to.

France Threatens To Impose Sanctions On UK In New Fishing Row

UK PM Boris Johnson Speaks On What Happens After Brexit On Friday 31 January 2020

The British Ambassador To Zimbabwe has reportedly said Britain Is ready to work with Zimbabwe the Herald reports. Mrs Robinson said this after paying a courtesy call to Speaker Of The Parliament Advocate Jacob Mudenda.
The Herald qouted the British envoy:
<blockquote>The Honourable Speaker and I had a good discussion this morning and the first thing we discussed was the continuation of trade between the UK and Zimbabwe.
We have excellent trade relationships at the moment over US$400 million of trade in goods from Zimbabwe go to the UK and just recently I was in the Eastern Highlands looking at one of the tea estates of which 95 percent of that tea goes to London and we were talking about ratifying our agreement to continue that trade so that the UK and Zimbabwe can continue the same level of trade after the UK has left the European Union so I was assured by the Speaker that that process is underway</blockquote>

Gold Prices in the US ended the week at $1493 per ounce down from $1500 per ounce down 0.04%. Gold prices are forecasted to drop a further $13 to trade at $1480.
According to Hareesh V, Head Of Commodity Research At Geojit Financial Services:
<blockquote>Considering the present uncertainties around the US-China trade war and other geopolitical risks, gold still has potential upside.</blockquote>
Uncertainty about major issues like Brexit and US-China trade deal has also led to volatility in the currency market, thus impacting the price of dollar-denominated gold.

Gold Prices Drop, Expected To Drop Further - Report

At the exporters and buyers’ seminar in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Bulawayo">Bulawayo,</a> the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/ZimTrade">ZimTrade</a> Chair said they were positioning themselves for Brexit, The Chronicle reports.
Mrs Clara Mlambo told delegates to leverage on existing markets as they position themselves for Brexit which they think will open trade opportunities for Zimbabwe. Said Mrs Mlambo:
<blockquote>Leverage on available trade agreements which offer preferential access into regional and UK markets as you engage with the buyers. With regard to the UK, we are positioning ourselves in preparation for Brexit.</blockquote>

ZimTrade Readies For Brexit

Zimbabwe and six other countries are reported to be in Britain’s radar for investments and trade ahead of its exit from the European Union, popularly known as Brexit.
This was revealed by Zimbabwe’ ambassador to the United Kingdom James Manzou in an interview with the Sunday Mail. He said:
<blockquote>Britain is planning on exiting the European Union. Zimbabwe and other East and Southern African countries are signatories to a partnership agreement with the EU called the EU-ESA agreement.
Now that Britain is pulling out of the EU, it means the EU-ESA can no longer trade with them under the terms of that agreement. However, our trade agreement with the rest of the EU continues under the terms of the EU-ESA agreement.</blockquote>
London and Harare have reportedly signed a bilateral trade agreement and Zimbabwe is in the process of ratifying the bilateral agreement.

Zimbabwe Part Of London's "After Brexit" Plans

Zimbabwe is expected to sign a bilateral trade agreement with the UK after the latter leaves EU The Sunday mail reports. ZimTrade Managing Director Allan Mujuru confirmed the reports to the publication when he said:
<blockquote>I am very much aware (that Zimbabwe will sign a trade agreement with Britain). It’s under the process of ratification. If you look at our trade, there are a lot opportunities that are going to be opened because of Brexit,</blockquote>
According to the same publication The UK last year expressed interest in opening shop in Harare.
<blockquote>In December last year, Britain’s Department for International Trade (DIT), headed by Tom Hill announced plans to set up an office in Harare, as Britain regarded Africa as an important continent in terms of its economic as well as security interests. Zimbabwe’s trade with the UK is currently more with Government by</blockquote>
In June 2016 Britain voted to leave EU a Union of 28 European Countries. After Brexit and it is popularily known, Britain will no longer be part of The EU which imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe, therefore, it will be free to conduct business with sanctioned countries like Zimbabwe. According to The Sunday Mail, in 2018, the UK was Zimbabwe’s 3rd best export market, taking 21% of the product destined for the EU.

Zim To Sign A Trade Agreement With Britain - Report

Theresa May, the British Prime Minister has rejected calls to resign over her handling of Brexit. Responding to Tory Brexiteer Andrea Jenkyns who said that she had failed to deliver on her promises and had lost public trust, May said that it was not an issue about me or her. She further said that if it was up to the prime minister, the UK would have already left the EU.
May had earlier pledged to stand down if and when Parliament ratified her Brexit withdrawal agreement, but she has not made it clear how long she intends to stay if no deal is reached.
It is reported that calls to have been mounting for the prime minister to name an exit date. However, her spokesman said she had already promised to leave after delivering the first stage of Brexit and was sticking to that “generous and bold offer”.
