Highlanders has distanced itself from the calls to boycott Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday when the club faces ZPC Kariba in a Castle Lager Premiership match.
Highlanders’ chief executive officer, Sihlangu Dlodlo, said the team is training in preparation for the match.
He said the club adheres to the laws and constitution of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) and would not participate in actions that could harm the league or ZIFA. Said Dlodlo (via <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/highlanders-fc-not-part-of-boycott-call/">Chronicle</a>):

As I speak, our boys are training for the match and are ready to entertain fans. We are not involved in calls for the boycott.
As Highlanders, we have always counted on the 12th man to help the boys deliver. The noise drives our players and we count on them this Sunday.
Our players always play to entertain fans and this Sunday is no different.
</blockquote>
However, Dlodlo said the club cannot control the actions of its fans and that any unauthorised events organised in the club’s name will be addressed appropriately. He said:

We are not part of that. We are a formal institution and we give our members rights and obligations. We are members of the PSL where we act within the laws and constitution and we would not love to engage in unintended conflicts. We cannot be part of actions perceived to pull down the PSL and ZIFA.

Highlanders supporters have been calling for a boycott of their upcoming match in protest over the treatment of their club by the PSL and ZIFA.
Bosso fans were outraged after a controversial penalty decision during a Chibuku Super Cup quarter-final against Simba Bhora at Wadzanayi Stadium last week, which led to the abandonment of the match and the suspension of the referees.
Referee Cecil Gwezera and his assistant Zondzi Ngosana were suspended by the ZIFA Referees Committee the day after the match.
Despite Simba Bhora being the home team and the event management falling under the PSL’s jurisdiction, both Highlanders and Simba Bhora were fined US$6,000 for crowd trouble.

Highlanders Rejects Calls To Boycott ZPC Kariba Match

Highlanders’ Chief Executive Officer, Sihlangu Dlodlo, has said the club has now settled nearly all signing-on fees owed to players from the 2023 season after principal sponsors Sakunda Holdings made the necessary funds available.
Dlodlo further disclosed that the club is now fully up to date with all winning bonuses for the matches in which the team secured maximum points. He was quoted by <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/highlanders-clear-player-arrears/">The Herald</a> as saying:

I can confirm that we paid 80 per cent of the 2023 players’ signing-on fees. I think we will be completely done paying all the players by the end of the week and Devine Mhindirira, who recently left us to join FC Platinum, is one of the players that we paid. We love him so much that we also allowed him to leave us.
We are very thankful to our principal sponsors Sakunda Holdings who have stood with us for a long time.
We want to appreciate the patience of our players in waiting for their signing-on fees. We thank them for their commitment.
We don’t owe our players any winning bonuses and we are in the process of sorting out their bonuses for the [2-0 win over] Dynamos.

Club secretary-general Morgen Dube said they are largely satisfied with their squad but will seek to bolster the defensive ranks. Said Dube:

In this second transfer-window we have managed to bring in two strikers Never Rauzhi and Nqobile Ndlovu. 
We will see how it goes as we seek to strengthen our defence but we are not on a mass recruitment drive. We are happy with the squad that we have and we will stand guided by our coaches.

Rauzhi (27), joined Highlanders on a six-month loan deal from Bulawayo Chiefs. Meanwhile, 26-year-old Ndlovu signed a one-and-a-half-year contract to become part of the Bulawayo football giants after departing Sua Flamingoes FC of Botswana.

The Highlanders soccer club has almost paid all their players signing-on fees for the 2023 season, thanks to their sponsors Sakunda Holdings. They have also settled all winning bonuses for matches they won. The club is happy with their squad but will look to strengthen their defense. They recently added two new strikers, Never Rauzhi and Nqobile Ndlovu. Rauzhi is on loan for six months, while Ndlovu signed a one-and-a-half-year contract. Highlanders’ head coach, Baltemar Brito, has left the club and returned to Portugal after less than two seasons. His departure was confirmed by his assistant, Antonio Torres, who stated that they had reached an agreement with the club to part ways, <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/sport/article/200020477/brito-leaves-highlanders">NewsDay</a> reported. Torres, who also acted as Brito’s translator, revealed their plans to travel from Germany to Portugal. He said:

With the departure of Brito and Torres, Highlanders face a significant change in their coaching staff. It remains uncertain who will take over as the new coach and how this transition will impact the team’s performance. The club will need to adjust to this new phase and work towards maintaining its success in future seasons.
The Bulawayo-based club has not yet commented on the departure of coach Baltemar Brito. Reports from last month suggested that the club would not renew Brito’s contract when it expires on 31 December 2023. Brito, who took over the team in June last year, could not lead Highlanders to their first league title since 2006. Despite uncertainty about his future, he was appointed as the coach of the national team, the Warriors, in September. Brito guided Zimbabwe to two draws in the World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Nigeria. With his departure from Highlanders, he will now focus on his role as the national team coach.

Baltemar Brito Has Left Highlanders And Returned To Portugal

Highlanders Football Club, arguably the local club that draws more fans at its home games, has been accused of ignoring security advice against transporting cash from their gate takings using unescorted private vehicles.
<a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/bosso-accused-of-defying-security-advice-on-transporting-gate-takings/">The Chronicle</a> reported that two female employees and a member of the executive allegedly took over US$5 000 after the Sunday match without any security escort.
The publication cited sources as saying the incident occurred soon after the counting of total gate takings and doing reconciliations from their league match against FC Platinum at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday where 11 046 fans were in attendance.
Two employees and one executive member (names supplied) were reportedly observed packing the money into plastic containers before walking out and getting into a private vehicle and driving off. Said a source:

At the pre-match meeting, it was clearly stated that clubs must engage CITs from reputable security companies to transport cash, especially now that fans, a majority of them, pay using forex.
That advice was obviously directed at Highlanders who are in the habit of doing that.
It was therefore surprising that a few hours later, they did exactly what security at the pre-match meeting had advised against.

It was not clear whether the money was being taken to the club offices or not.
Highlanders communications and marketing officer Nozibelo Maphosa could not reveal whether the trio’s actions were with the consent of the club, or the club has a contracted Cash-in-transit (CIT) van. She said:
We are not aware of such allegations, and for obvious security reasons, we cannot divulge to the public how we transit our cash.
On 29 September 2015, then Highlanders secretary Emmet Ndlovu was robbed at gunpoint at Edenvale in South Africa.
The robbers got away with US$300, P300, and R25 000 of club money.

"Highlanders Ignored Security Advice On Transporting Gate Takings"

Highlanders say no decision has been made regarding assistant coach Joel Luphahla’s status, who doesn’t hold the requisite qualifications to sit on the Premier Soccer League (PSL) bench.
It is mandatory for PSL coaches to possess a CAF “A” badge or equivalent. Luphahla is a holder of a CAF “C” Licence.
The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has emphasized that they will not be making any exemptions anymore.
Highlanders chief executive officer Ronald Moyo on Thursday dismissed reports that Luphahla has resigned from the club. Moyo said:

Let me set the record straight on the resignation letter. If there is such a letter, it has not come to my office and I can confirm that I have never received such a letter.
It has not come to my attention. Maybe it will come in the future but as far as I am concerned there is no such letter.

Luphahla is said to be on his way to MWOS FC, a team that is based in Norton and will be competing in the ZIFA Northern Region Division One league this year.
Moyo said head coach Baltemar Brito and the other assistant Antonio Torres are expected in the country in the next two weeks. He said:

We have been planning for our pre-season as usual as you know that Joel is working together with coach Brito and Torres as one of the assistants, so we are planning for the season going ahead.
We are also aware as a club of ZIFA’s implementation of a resolution that was made a few years ago that all coaches and their assistants should be CAF “A” holders. We are aware of that and the coach (Luphahla) is aware of that.
He is working on his qualifications and as a club, we are cognisant of the fact that we have a running contract with the coach.
If there is anything that happened during the course of the pre-season; we will communicate.
But as things stand, he is assisting coach Brito, there is no resignation letter and no decision that has been made.

Torres, a holder of a Uefa “B” licence, was also not cleared to sit on the bench in the course of the season last year.

No Decision Has Been Made Regarding Luphahla's Status - Bosso CEO

Highlanders’ principal sponsor, energy company Sakunda Holdings has offered a 250 percent bonus to the team and administrative staff.
This was revealed by the company’s projects manager Nqobile Magwizi at a dinner held at a local hotel on Sunday evening.
Speaking on behalf of Sakunda proprietor Kuda Tagwirei, Magwizi said Bosso deserves to celebrate turning around their season which started badly but improved gradually culminating in the club finishing the season in position five. Said Magwizi:

This year, Highlanders Football Club will be receiving a 250 percent bonus just to celebrate the efforts made by the team and staff members this season.
Given where the club was at the beginning of the season and being at number five now, it calls for a celebration.
As Sakunda, we are not worried about the final result but the process, efforts and commitment of both the players and management.
Today, we want to recognise this effort and commitment through bonuses which will be paid out before the festive season.

Highlanders’ vice-chairman Fiso Siziba who represented the club at Sunday’s dinner alongside chief executive officer Ronald Moyo, thanked Sakunda for the support. Siziba said:

Highlanders Players Offered 250% Bonus By Sakunda Holdings

A player from the Highlanders development side, Bosso90 died on Tuesday morning at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo.
The <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/bosso90-player-tragically-passes-away/">Chronicle</a> reported sources as saying the footballer was pushed off a moving truck.
The deceased Bosso90 player is Caesar Dube and is the son of Siza Dube.
Highlanders Football Club announced the sad development via a statement posted on its Twitter platform. It said:

Highlanders Player Dies After Being Pushed Off Moving Truck

Highlanders on Friday ended a four-year wait, spanning 32 matches, for a league win away from home, after beating Yadah win 3-2 at National Sports Stadium in Harare.
This is a second consecutive away win for Highlanders after they beat Triangle United in the Chibuku Super Cup first-round at Gibbo Stadium about two weeks ago.
The last time that Bosso won in the Premier Soccer League away from home was at Gibbo Stadium in a 1-0 win over Triangle in July 2018.
Highlanders almost squandered their chance to break the jinx after leading 3-0, only to allow the Miracle Boys to score twice.
A Ray Lunga header made it 1-0 for Bosso after 10 minutes when Washington Navaya delivered a threatening ball into the penalty box which Yadah failed to clear.
Navaya made it 2-0 for Highlanders 15 minutes later when tapped in a cross from Lynoth Chikuhwa into the box.
Bosso made it 3-0 in the 50th minute when Chikuhwa turned from provider to scorer.
Innocent Musiwa pulled one back for Yadah in the 82nd minute and the Miracle Boys scored the second goal in the 85th minute.
Speaking after the match, assistant coach Joel Luphahla said he was happy to finally break the 32-match jinx. He said:

We are very happy for the boys as the technical team. Sometimes it’s very hard, I think 2018 was the last time we won away from home in Triangle if I am not mistaken, so to come here and try to break that jinx was not going to be easy.

Highlanders Win Away From Home After Four-year Wait

Highlanders Football Club says it is seeking donations to buy laptops for its officials in order to comply with FIFA club licensing requirements.
In a statement issued this Wednesday, Highlanders said it intends to equip all of the club’s offices with sufficient tools to perform their duties effectively. The statement reads as follows:

Highlanders FC has noted public reactions to the circulating letter released by the club seeking a donation of a laptop for the office of the CEO from a specific group of members.
For a record, as the Highlanders seek to comply with FIFA club licensing requirements, the club is embarking on a modernization drive which involves equipping staff members with sufficient tools to perform their duties effectively.
Highlanders seek to achieve this through approaching different corporates and its members, who are the owners of this great club.
The general feeling within the institution is that such initiatives cannot be carried out without involving members and fans, as it might take away the sense of belonging and ownership from the community that prides itself on being the key stakeholders of the institution.
The objective of the campaign is to equip all of the club’s offices that also include the Finance, Communications and Marketing, Security and Loss Control, Entities Management offices, and the technical teams across levels ranging from the youth teams, and the women’s teams to the senior men’s team.
The process has been ongoing and has already equipped some departments.

We Need Laptops For All Staff Members, Says Highlanders

Highlanders Football Club is appealing for funds to purchase a laptop for its chief executive officer (CEO) Ronald Moyo.
The appeal was made through a letter written by the club’s secretary Morgan Dube, dated 5 July 2022, and addressed to diaspora Highlanders members. It reads:

The club wishes to buy a laptop for the chief executive officer.
</blockquote>
Given our current financial predicament, we are unable to raise enough funds to buy the laptop.

You can donate using the following means: Send to your family member home and ask to come to the Highlanders office and donate on your behalf.
They will be issued with a club receipt upfront.
</blockquote>
The letter said donations can also be sent to club treasurer Busani Mthombeni via World Remit, MoneyGram or Western Union, and his South African details are given.
Dube said all donations will be publicised and captured in the official club records.

Highlanders Seek Funds To Buy CEO Laptop

Highlanders head coach Mandla Mpofu says Sunday’s Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match against Dynamos will be “tricky”.
Bosso hosts DeMbare at Barbourfields Stadium today, with Mpofu of the belief that victory for Highlanders will be a turning point this season. Said Mpofu:

We are getting into this game against Dynamos as underdogs, looking at the winning streak that Dynamos has so far — nine games unbeaten.
So, it’s going to be a tricky one, but I hope everyone will be 100 per cent ready for the battle come Sunday (today).

Highlanders have changed coaches 10 times since 2012 but have failed to win the premier league title since 2006.
Kelvin Kaindu, Bongani Mafu, Elroy Akbay, Madinda Ndlovu, Pieter De Jongh, Mark Harrison and Mandla “Lulu” Mpofu (with two spells) have all been in charge at Highlanders in the last decade.
Mark Mathe and Amin Soma-Phiri have also been in charge, although on an interim basis in 2014 and 2015, respectively.
Highlanders have 16 points from 13 matches, while their rivals Dynamos sit on top of the log with 30 points, two clear of second-placed Chicken Inn and five ahead of 2019 champions FC Platinum.
Highlanders fans have demanded the coach’s sacking and Mpofu said that he understands their feelings. He said:

These things happen, it’s life, it’s football. I can understand their (fans) feelings and they are within their rights.
If the team is not posting good results, they are bound to do that, but I think I need to channel all my energy into preparation and make sure that we get the three points.

Highlanders Are Underdogs, Says Coach Mandla Mpofu

Highlanders have condemned the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) for the manner in which the police force handled crowd trouble during the club’s Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) match against FC Platinum at Mandava Stadium on Saturday.
The match was abandoned after Highlanders fans invaded the pitch in anger over the awarding of a second-half penalty to the hosts when the scoreline was 1-1.
Police responded by throwing tear smoke toward fans causing a near-stampede which endangered the lives of fans.
Highlanders have since issued a statement criticising the police for allegedly failing to handle the violence properly. Read the statement:

Highlanders Football Club would like to condemn in the strongest sense, the conduct of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers who were entrusted with the responsibility to provide security during a Premier Soccer League match between FC Platinum and Highlanders at Mandava Stadium on Saturday.
The club understands ZRP to be a stakeholder of the game whose mandate is to provide security for players, officials and fans.
The violent and thuggish behaviour by ZRP towards fans and players cannot be tolerated as it brings our football into disrepute.
Whilst the club does not condone pitch invasion and missile throwing by a section of football fans, it was unnecessary for ZRP to throw tear smoke toward fans as this behaviour ended up affecting players, officials and some innocent fans.
The act was against the basic principles of crowd management and as a result, the victims were players and officials who ZRP purported to protect.
As if that was not enough, ZRP further went on a rampage, assaulting innocent fans outside the stadium and in some instances beating up vehicles they perceived to be belonging to, and ferrying Highlanders fans.
The club takes this opportunity to assure its members, fans and all other stakeholders of its commitment to its values of Ubuntu, which encompasses such ethics as respect for self and respect for others, hence further commitment to engage all other stakeholders, ZRP included, in trying to bring to an end hooliganism and violence in the stadia.
We further take this opportunity to empathize with all the innocent victims of yesterday’s acts of violence and condemn a few individuals who were involved in the acts of pitch invasion and missile throwing.

Highlanders Criticise ZRP For "Thuggish Behaviour" After Mandava Crowd Trouble

Highlanders assistant coach Joel Luphahla has refuted claims he was fired by Northern Region Division One side Golden Eagles.
Addressing the media on Thursday, Luphahla said he left the club by mutual consent after having talks with his new club. He said:

If you look at the Northern Region (league) table, we were on 28 points, with the leading team on 30 points. Looking at the table, it’s a sign that l was not fired.

Highlanders have won their first match of the current Castle Premier Soccer League season after beating Gweru-based side WhaWha 2-0 at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday.
Vice-captain Nqobizitha Masuku put up a man of the match performance scoring both goals from set-pieces.
Before the match, Bosso had only managed to collect one point from a possible nine whilst their opponents had managed two points.
Highlanders are now on four points after four rounds of fixtures and face Bulawayo City next weekend.

Highlanders Pick First Win Of The Season

Highlanders acting chief executive officer Ronald Moyo said that they are finding it difficult to sign new players since Sakunda Holdings became their principal sponsor last year.
Moyo said selling clubs are demanding astronomical fees for players Highlanders would want to sign because of the mistaken view that Bosso has limitless financial resources. Moyo said:

The coming in of Sakunda Holdings has not made things easy for us because if you approach a player or a club intending to seal a deal with them, they tend to think we have a lot of money.
Some teams are expecting to get something out of this world from us but we have a budget we work on.
As a result, we haven’t signed as many players that people and our fans would have wanted us to have.
There is generally a misconception that we have a huge budget to sign several players.
It’s no wonder we were forced to settle for Rahman Kutsanzira who was a free agent.

Rahman Kutsanzira left three-time champions FC Platinum who are reportedly on a rebuilding exercise and was signed on a free transfer.
In September 2021, Highlanders and Dynamos entered into a partnership with Sakunda Holdings who unveiled a combined sponsorship package of about US$5.3 million.
Under the deal, Zimbabwe’s two largest clubs were guaranteed to receive US$900 000 per year each for salaries, bonuses and signing-on fees.
The energy company pledged to provide US$420 000 towards the payment of salaries for players and the technical team.
Bosso and DeMbare will also receive US$60 000 each year for players’ signing on fees.

Highlanders Re-sign Rahman Kutsanzira From FC Platinum

Sakunda Holdings boss <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Kudakwashe_Tagwirei">Kuda Tagwirei</a> on Sunday pledged to renovate the Highlanders’ offices starting this Monday.
Tagwirei visited the Bosso offices in Bulawayo on Sunday morning in the company of Deputy Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Tino Machakaire and Sakunda Holdings executives and held a meeting with the club’s executive committee and board.
During the meeting, Tagwirei promised to immediately renovate the club’s offices and pledged his continued support for the club. He said:

I would like to appreciate the work that has been done by <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Ndumiso_Gumede">Ndumiso Gumede</a> and the team to have these offices.
I have looked at the offices and seen how dilapidated they are. We will be making arrangements such that the renovation of the offices starts on Monday.

He said when he recovered from sickness, he was informed about the dire financial situation at the former Premier League champions and decided to help. Said Tagwirei:

I was down with sickness for some months and when l came back, they told me about the situation at Highlanders and we decided to come in and help.
Primarily it was Highlanders that we wanted to assist and later on, Dynamos came into the picture.
I believe Highlanders should continue as a community team. This is the best model for the team and we will assist where we can.

Highlanders’ board chairman Luke Mnkandla thanked Sakunda for its timely support, which came when the club needed it most.
Sakunda recently announced a sponsorship package for both Dynamos and Highlanders, with US$420 000 towards payment of salaries for players and the technical team and each club receiving US$60 000 each year for signing-on fees.
There is US$200 000 for Bosso or DeMbare if they win the league title and a US$150 000 bonus for qualifying for the CAF Champions League.

Kuda Tagwirei Meets Highlanders Bosses

Controversial businessman <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Kuda_Tagwirei">Kuda Tagwirei</a> on Sunday visited the Highlanders’ offices and pledged to spruce up the club’s administration residence beginning this Monday.
Tagwirei was in the company of his friend Tino Machakaire, who is the Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports, Arts and Recreation Tino Machakaire.
Tagwirei, Machakaire and some of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Sakunda_Holdings">Sakunda Holdings</a> top brass met the Bosso executive and board following an invitation from the club last week.
Addressing the brief meeting, Tagwirei promised to immediately renovate the offices and pledged his continued support for the Bulawayo giants.

Highlanders Football Club has said first-team players will have their salaries paid by the club’s main sponsors, Sakunda Holdings.
Last month, Highlanders secured a six-month sponsorship deal with Utande to cover salaries for the 27 first team contracted players from September until February next year in a deal worth ZWL$3.6 million.
After Bosso sealed a deal with Sakunda, they activated a clause in the agreement signed with Utande when they entered into a partnership.
This entails that funds from Utande will no longer be used for players’ salaries and will be channelled to other use at the club.
Sakunda was recently unveiled as the main bankrollers for Highlanders and Dynamos, with the company to give both clubs US$890 000 per year over a period of three years, with the sponsorship worth US$5.3 million.
Nhlanhla Dube, the Highlanders chief executive officer yesterday said that now that Sakunda has come in as main sponsors, funds from Utande will no longer be used for remuneration.
On the Highlanders first-team shirt, Dube said Sakunda will take the space on the chest, Utande will occupy space on the back of the shirt.
As part of the sponsorship from Sakunda, Highlanders and Dynamos were given cars to be used by coaches as well as captains of the two clubs.
Dube said that the cars were given to the two clubs for use by whoever is the coach and captain at the time.

Sakunda Holdings To Remunerate Players

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) and Highlanders Football Club have expressed sadness over the death of former Warriors player and captain <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Misheck_Chidzambwa">Misheck Chidzambwa</a>.
Chidzambwa passed away on Thursday night at the age of 66. The former Dynamos defender had been unwell since last year. ZIFA said in a statement:
<blockquote>Our sincere condolences to the Chidzambwa family and the local football family at large following the passing of legendary Warriors player and coach Misheck Chidzambwa.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the deceased.
May his soul rest in peace.</blockquote>
Bulawayo-based football giants Highlanders learnt with shock the death of Chidzambwa. The club said in a statement:
<blockquote>Our thoughts and prayers are with the Chidzambwa family and the entire Zimbabwean football fraternity following the shocking passing on of the Warriors former captain and legend Misheck Chidzambwa. May His Dear Soul Rest In Peace!</blockquote>
According to The Herald, Chidzambwa becomes the third Zimbabwean football legend to die within a month.
Another DeMbare and Warriors great, David “Yogi” Mandigora, and the iconic former Dynamos and Warriors coach, Mick Poole both passed away this month.
Chidzambwa and his elder brother, Sunday, who has now retired from active football coaching, were legends of domestic football.
The late Misheck made history by becoming the first captain to lift silverware with the Warriors when Zimbabwe won the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup at Rufaro in 1985 under the tutelage of Poole.
Poole sadly passed away in the United Kingdom last week, at the age of 85 years.
Zimbabwe’s second silverware came in 2000 when Chidzambwa led the Warriors to their first COSAFA Cup success.
Chidzambwa’s former club Dynamos, with whom he won seven league titles, expressed sorrow over his passing away. The club said in a statement:
<blockquote>We are saddened by the passing away of a great player and coach Misheck Chidzambwa. Chidzambwa won seven titles with us, was the first Warriors captain to win silverware and the first Warriors coach to win COSAFA Cup.</blockquote>

ZIFA, Highlanders Mourn Chidzambwa

Highlanders Football Club has reportedly topped up players’ monthly salaries by US$70 after the intervention of the Footballers Union of Zimbabwe (FUZ).
Bosso players embarked on a strike and refused to train in the build-up to last Sunday’s Chibuku Super Cup clash against Bulawayo City.
They only temporarily suspended their industrial action a day before the match when they trained at a private school before they went on to win 1-0.
The players wanted US$100 and the club said it could only afford US$50 but FUZ pushed that amount to US$70, which ended up being the agreed figure.
Reports indicate that Bosso players have since been paid that amount as a top-up to their May salaries.
FUZ secretary-general, Thomas Sweswe told Sunday News that they do not encourage their members to go on strike, instead, they should push for amicable solutions between clubs and players. He said:
<blockquote>We do not advocate for our members to go on strike, they should engage in dialogue with their clubs.
We encourage the players to come to us first before they engage in any strike action. FUZ is not there to fight clubs, we understand the situation.
If the Highlanders players had come to us first, we would have told them to follow the right procedures.
We always do these workshops with players to educate them on the right procedures to follow.</blockquote>
Sweswe, a former Highlanders and Kaizer Chiefs defender, expressed his gratitude to the club’s leadership for agreeing to work with the FUZ leadership in finding a solution. Said Sweswe:
<blockquote>We want to thank Highlanders for allowing us to meet them on behalf of the players  and a solution was found and we hope there are no issues going forward.
Our president, Desmond Maringwa ended up coming to Bulawayo specifically to understand the grievance from the players and the club.</blockquote>

Highlanders Players Get Salary Hike

A former Highlanders Football Club fringe player died during a social football match at Esilwane Youth Centre in Pumula suburb on Sunday.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed that Mbuso Mandiopera (35) of Pumula North died after chesting the ball.
Mandiopera was featuring for his side Santos against a Cowdray Park side when he chested the ball, knelt and died shortly afterwards on the soccer pitch. Said Inspector Ncube:
<blockquote>We are investigating a case of sudden death. We received a report that a 35-year-old male adult Mbuso Mandiopera of Pumula North died while playing social soccer at Esilwane Youth Centre on Sunday, June 6.
After controlling the ball with his chest, he knelt down while holding his chest, showing that he was in pain.
Play stopped and when they attended to him, he was moving his hands like a person with fits.
A report was made to the police (and) an ambulance was summoned and the crew confirmed Mandiopera’s death upon arrival.
His body was taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) for postmortem.</blockquote>
According to Chronicle, Mandiopera made his mark at Bosso as a key member of the Under-19 squad that had the likes of Patrick ‘Mboma’ Mpofu, Graham Ncube, Nhlanhla ‘Mookie’ Dube, Innocent Nyoni (former Black Mambas goalkeeper and midfielder), the late Sifiso Nketha, Obidiah Tarumbwa, Zephaniah Ngodzo, Marshall Machazane, Brighton Dube, Brighton Choto and Thomas Muketiwa, two decades ago.
The incident was not the first time when a football died during a social game in Zimbabwe.
In 2015, former Highlanders, Masvingo United and Njube Sundowns midfielder Maphias Webb collapsed and died during a social game at Bango grounds in Mpopoma suburb.

Former Highlanders Player Dies Playing Social Match

Highlanders Football Club on Wednesday announced the re-signing of Joel ‘Josta’ Ngodzo who had been plying his trade in Zambia.
Ngodzo has also played for FC Platinum and CAPS United Football Club locally, and Buildcon in the Zambian Super League. In a post on their social media channels, Bosso said:
<blockquote>We are pleased to announce that Joel Welcome ‘Josta’ Ngodza has joined the club.
Josta, a product of the club’s Youth structures is the reigning Castle Lager Premier Soccer League Soccer Star of the year who adds experience to the squad.</blockquote>
Earlier this year when he was in the country for the festive season, Ngodzo reportedly said he was not happy at the Zambian club and made known his intentions to return to Bosso.
He had joined Buildcon from CAPS United but fell out with his club hence his decision to go back to his boyhood club. A source was quoted as saying at the time:
<blockquote>Josta (Joel Ngodzo) is in the country and he sent his handlers (unnamed) to Highlanders to tell the club that he wants to rejoin the club and request that he be considered for the 2021 season.
Highlanders were supposed to meet with him, but probably because the offices are closed for the holidays, they will discuss it after.</blockquote>

Highlanders Re-sign Joel 'Josta' Ngodzo

Former Highlanders Football Club coach Hendrikus Pieter de Jongh has assumed the brand ambassadorial role for the club in his native Netherlands.
The Dutchman on Monday posted on Twitter advertising Highlanders replica jerseys in Holland using the club’s kit sponsors On the Ball (OTB) Looks’ website. De Jongh tweeted:
<blockquote>For my wonderful fans from Holland, there is good news. My former club Highlanders has a website (https://t.co/gsBUHeqw7f) where you can buy shirts.
The club is also giving a number of shirts to The Champ to give away. Possibly signed by myself.</blockquote>
The replica jerseys cost US$35 in sportswear shops while on the OTB Looks website they are priced at R550.
Highlanders spokesperson Ronald Moyo said the club appreciates De Jongh’s gesture but they are yet to speak to its technical partners OTB Looks on the matter. Moyo said:
<blockquote>At Highlanders, our attitude is whoever comes at any given point and contributes to the objectives of the club even if they leave, remain an extension of the club’s network.
It is against this background that we appreciate De Jongh’s voluntary service to be the club’s brand ambassador in the Netherlands.

The Dutch coach had a short stint a Highlanders before he crossed the floor to join Premier Soccer League champions FC Platinum.
He joined Highlanders in September 2019 and won the Chibuku Super Cup but left Bosso in January 2020 to join the Zvishavane-based club after failing to resist the lure of CAF Champions League football.
De Jongh was sacked by the platinum miners 11 months later after the Confederation of African Football refused to give him a waiver to coach in the Champions League without the required coaching badges.

De Jongh Takes New Role At Highlanders

Johnfart Sibanda has been elected Highlanders Football Club executive chairman after polling 154 votes against Kenneth Mhlophe’s 149 votes.
Morgen Dube received 212 votes against Israel Moyo’s 91 to become club secretary, while Mgcini Mafu was voted committee member after receiving 176 votes to beat Bhekumuzi Sibanda who garnered 128 votes.
The club’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) should have been conducted on the 31st of January before electing three Executive members a week later.
The elections were only conducted today after the AGM was successfully held on 21 March.
The events were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic rules and regulations and the negative responses received from the police and relevant sporting authorities.

Johnfart Sibanda Elected Highlanders Executive Chairman

Tshinga Dube, a long time Highlanders benefactor and life member, has allayed fears that the club had been captured by the ruling Zanu PF party after the government recently granted it a mining claim.
Angry Bosso fans have vented their feelings on social media against what they consider to be the hijacking of the club by the ruling party.
The fury was triggered by club officials’ offer of a personalised club replica jersey to President Emmerson Mnangagwa as a token of appreciation for the gold mine offer when he was in Bulawayo last month.
But speaking at the club’s annual general meeting on Sunday, Dube said the club belongs to “the people” regardless of political affiliation. Said, Dube:
<blockquote>I have heard that social media is abuzz with some people accusing others of selling the club to Zanu PF. That is not true.
Football belongs to the people regardless of political affiliation. It is known that the Queen of England supports Liverpool.
There are Highlanders members who are politicians and some are civil servants and so forth, but we cannot look at things in this way.
We have Omega Sibanda (Zanu PF MP), he is a politician, but he is a member of Highlanders.
We have Justice (Nicholas) Mathonsi here and he is a member of Highlanders.
So it is not correct to mix these things because even Dynamos as it is has a number of politicians.
Does it then mean that if you are in the Highlanders executive committee then you must buy Zanu PF membership cards? No! Let us correct this mentality.</blockquote>

Zanu PF Hasn't Captured Highlanders, Says Tshinga Dube

Highlanders Football Club has severed relations with its legal representatives Ncube and Partners Law Firm over what is believed to be differences in a legal opinion.
This comes after the lawyers advised the club against extending the term of office of three executive committee members who had served their mandatory three years.
The board had sought legal opinion when it decided to effect the extensions following the postponement of the annual general meeting after the club was refused a clearance by authorities to gather for an AGM.
The lawyers said the club’s constitution was clear and any extension would be in violation of article 10.3 which states that elected executive committee members shall hold office for a period of three years after which they will automatically lose their positions.
The lawyers also claimed they were never consulted by the club on its decision to venture into mining and over the three-year US$300 000 kit sponsorship deal with British sportswear OTB.
At Sunday’s annual general meeting held at the club house, life member Thembinkosi Thwala called for the removal of the lawyers as the club’s legal counsel.
The proposal was seconded and there was no counter-proposal.

Highlanders Football Club’s pending 2021 Annual General Meeting (AGM) will finally be held on 21 March while the Executive Members elections will be conducted on 28 March.
This was said by the club’s president Ndumiso Gumede and Board Chairman Luke Mnkandla in a joint statement this Saturday.
According to the statement, both the AGM and elections will start at 1000hrs in the morning and end by 1200hrs midday.
Gumede and Mnkandla sought to assure members and stakeholders that both the AGM and elections will be held in adherence to strict COVID-19 protocols.
The AGM should have been conducted on the 31st of January before electing three Executive members a week later.
However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic rules and regulations, the negative responses received from the police and relevant sporting authorities and broad consultation on the matter, the board resolved to postpone the events.
The three vacant posts are that of the Executive Chairman, which will see the incumbent Kenneth Mhlophe contesting with Johnfart Sibanda, the Secretary-General and the Committee Member’s posts.
Incumbent Israel Moyo will be challenged by Victoria Falls-based Morgan Dube for the Secretary-General post, while the battle for the Committee Member’s post will be between Bheka Sibanda and Mgcini Mafu.
Wisdom Mabhena the outgoing Committee Member will not be contesting as he has already served two terms.

Highlanders Announces New Dates For AGM, Elections

Highlanders Football Club defender Peter Muduhwa has completed his move to Simba Sports Club of Tanzania after signing a six-month loan deal on Tuesday.
Muduhwa arrived in Dar-es-Salaam at 1 AM on Tuesday from Cameroon where he was part of the Warriors squad for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament where they were humiliated after losing all three group matches.
Simba announced the arrival of Muduhwa on their social media channels later on Tuesday. In a statement, the club said:
<blockquote>Welcome to the big family of the national champions defender Peter Muduhwa (Master of Defense).
Simba fans we welcome you with both hands and we believe you will do a great job in the Champions League championships and Simba Super Cup.
The victim (sic) who was playing [for] Highlanders F. C of Zimbabwe has joined our squad from Cameroon in the Zimbabwe squad which is participating in CHAN.</blockquote>
Highlanders also confirmed Muduhwa’s move to Tanzania in a short statement posted on social media. It read:

Peter Muduhwa Completes Loan Move To Simba Sports Club

Tanzanian football champions Simba SC are reportedly planning to sign Warriors and Highlanders defender Peter Muduhwa on an initial a four-month loan.
The Chronicle reported a source saying the Tanzanian club has enlisted the services of football agent George Deda to negotiate on their behalf. A source told the publication:
<blockquote>Simba want Muduhwa to join them on a free loan and should he impress during the Caf Champions League games, they intend to sign him in a permanent deal.
The player will be well catered for during his stay. With the Zimbabwean league inactive, it will be a good deal for the player</blockquote>
The club recently signed FC Platinum midfielder Perfect Chikwende for a reported US$100 000 transfer fee.
Simba have been assessing clubless Zimbabwean defender Kelvin Moyo, who left South African Premiership side Chippa United last year.
After eliminating FC Platinum in the CAF Champions League, Simba have been grouped with Al Ahly of Egypt, DR Congo’s AS Vita and Sudanese giants Al Merrikh in the mini-league phase.
