The novel coronavirus has hit three boarding schools in Mashonaland East province, with 80 learners and teachers testing positive last week.
According to a Health ministry situational report (sitrep) dated 20 January 2023, the schools, which are all in Murehwa District, are Murehwa High, Nhowe Mission and Hurungwe Primary.
Health officials say the confirmed cases have been isolated while surveillance tests have been intensified.
The report also reveals that efforts to reach out to other parts of the district were being hampered by transport challenges.
According to the report, as of Saturday, at least 40 learners at Murehwa High School were in isolation while 32 cases were recorded at Nhowe Mission with three cases being reported at Hurungwe Primary School.
At Hurungwe Primary School, two female teachers tested positive for the virus. Part of the report says:

No admission of cases in isolation and no death has been reported.
</blockquote>
Mashonaland East provincial medical director (PMD) Paul Matsvimbo on Sunday confirmed the cases to NewsDay, saying the situation was under control. He said:
<blockquote>
I confirm that there are COVID-19 cases and Nhowe Mission and Murewa High School. As for Hurungwe, I will check on the latest developments.
The boarding schools have already implemented public health safety measures, that is isolating those who tested positive among other measures.
The situation is under control and all those who tested positive are stable and doing well. Our health officers are on the ground monitoring the situation.

New COVID-19 Cases Recorded At 3 Boarding Schools

Parents are reportedly facing double jeopardy as 2020 first term fees are beyond their reach and affordable form 1 places have reportedly run out, Daily the News reports.
The form one places shortage is so dire that only 24k pupils will be accommodated at Zimbabwe’s boarding schools against a demand of about 100K according to the publication.
The newly appointed Primary and Secondary Education Minister <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Cain_Mathema">Cain Mathema</a> said those who can’t find barding school places can just go to day schools within their school zones.
<blockquote>We estimate that about 100 000 learners are seeking boarding places. Those who will not be successful in securing boarding places will, therefore, be accommodated at day schools in their school zones.
I am, therefore, inviting the private sector to partner with government and the ministry for us to build more schools in order to meet the demand and to improve the infra- structure at our schools for both classrooms and teachers’ accommodation</blockquote>

Several boarding schools have tabled proposals to increase school fees and related levies to above $1 000 next term.
Among them is Matopo High which has proposed $1 300 and Mtshabezi High School has proposed $1 300. Both schools are in Matabeleland South Province.
Regina Mundi High School in the Midlands has proposed $1 400 while Sacred Heart Primary School in Esigodini has proposed $1 000 next term.
Some parents with children at some of the above-mentioned schools who spoke to the Sunday News had this to say:
<blockquote>If you look, most people who were sending children to these boarding schools are civil servants who are still earning just around $500 a month, how on earth are they going to afford these fees considering they also have other needs such as food and transport.
… The best is to remove my girls from their school because I will need more than $3 500 to cater to their needs each term which is not feasible as we do not earn that much. The problem with most boarding schools is that they also do not accept part payments and I wonder how the parents will manage.</blockquote>
Deputy Minister Moyo for Education Edgar Moyo confirmed to state media that a number of schools have written to the ministry seeking to adjust their fees for next term.

Boarding Schools Propose To Raise Fees To $1 000 Next Term

Primary and Secondary Education Deputy Minister Edgar Moyo yesterday told The Chronicle his ministry approved an increase in boarding school fees following proposals by school authorities following an increase in the prices of basic commodities.
As a result some schools have hiked their boarding fees by nearly 100 percent from what parents were paying in the third term last year. Schools such as John Tallach High School, Hlangabeza High School and Sacred Heart High School are among the schools that have hiked their fees. Moyo however said fees should not be a barrier to education. Said Moyo:
<blockquote>Basically the issue (boarding fees hike) has been necessitated by escalations in the market and the schools considered that they might not be able to sustain themselves with the old budgets. However, fees should not be a barrier to education. As much as possible we must charge what is affordable to a targeted community. We should not create schools that are exclusive and at the end of the day create a huge barrier to access to education.</blockquote>
Parents who spoke to The Chronicle, criticised the fees increase in the middle of the term saying it would disrupt to their planning and budgeting.

Govt Approves Increase In Boarding School Fees

Kusileni Secondary School,  a Catholic rub boarding school in <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Matabeleland_South_Province" target="_blank">Matebeleland South</a> is on the verge of closure after failing to attract pupils.  Local students cannot afford the fees being charged by the school.  The school is reported to have good boarding facilities but is located deep in the rural areas, making it expensive for the locals.
Matabeleland South Provincial Education Director Mrs Tumisang Thabela said:
<blockquote>The school is located too deep in the rural areas, yet it’s a boarding school. Local parents do not want a school that is expensive so that explains why it fails to attract learners
The school was viable before independence but after independence the Government constructed other schools in the area. That seems to be affecting it in terms of day scholar population.</blockquote>

Church run school on the verge of closure, after failing to attract pupils

Parents of students at Beautiful Beginners Boarding School in <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Marondera" target="_blank">Marondera</a> were left stranded after their children where evicted from the school’s premises by the Messenger of Court, after the school authorities had allegedly defaulted in paying rentals.
The school, which catered for primary school students as well as form one students, was revealed to be operating illegally as it was unregistered with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.
An unnamed source told Newsday that:
<blockquote>There are a number of issues here. The school is failing to settle just less than $2 000 in rental debts. The problem is that the owners are politicizing this whole issue. Moreover, other residents have filed a report with the relevant authorities accusing the children of making a lot of noise.
 </blockquote>
