Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe (PLZ) on Thursday said exports from Arcadia will commence in the near future.
The construction phase of the mine’s US$275 million processing facility commenced in May 2022 and ended in January 2023, reported <a href="https://www.theindependent.co.zw/local-news/article/200010457/lithium-miner-to-start-exports">The Zimbabwe Independent</a>.
In an address to staff to mark the first year of Prospect’s Chinese controlling shareholders at the mine, Prospect general manager Henry Zhu said:
<blockquote>
On the international market, the prices of lithium have gone down significantly in the last few months.
Work is being done on the ground for the company to start exporting products in the near future.
</blockquote>
Prospect chairperson George Fang said the commissioning of the plant will happen in due course. After that production will commence. Said Fang:

We embarked on this journey last year, on April 20, 2022, when our parent company, Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt Company Limited, acquired the PLZ asset and began building one of the world’s most sophisticated plants for the processing of hard rock lithium mineral resources.
At inception, we called on local communities to take up employment opportunities and this prioritisation resulted in hundreds of people being employed from local villages and wards in Goromonzi District, while people with varying skills came from all over the country.
</blockquote>
Prospect is owned by Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt Company Limited.
Zhejiang Huayou is a new high-tech enterprise founded in 2002 and specializing in research and development, and manufacturing business of new energy Li-ion battery materials and new cobalt materials.

Lithium Miner To Start Exports "Soon"

The Australia Stock Exchange (ASX)-listed Prospect Resources, which is propping up Zimbabwe’s lithium rush, said yesterday it is attracting high-end investors following the multi-million-dollar takeover of Goromonzi-based Arcadia Mine about two years ago.
Prospect Resources, which is developing Step Aside lithium mine near Arcadia, sold its first asset to Chinese investors two years ago in a US$378 million deal.
In this quarter, Arcadia will ship its first resource after five years of exploration and mine development, <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/business/article/200006804/investors-flood-prospect-after-us378m-deal-as-asx-listed-resources-junior-fires-up-hunt-for-fresh-zim-fortunes">NewsDay</a> reported.
Sam Hosack, CEO and Managing Director, stated in a message to investors that the company would focus its efforts on utilizing the Step Aside resource, helped by a fund of US$21 million. He said:
<blockquote>
The successful completion of our Arcadia transaction continues to attract first-rate partners seeking development partners, putting the organisation in a leading position to capitalise on the mineral-rich sub-Saharan region.
</blockquote>
His report included findings from Prospect’s first exploratory drilling campaign at Step Aside during the quarter.
The project is a single claim with a total area of about 100 hectares within the Harare Greenstone Belt, west of the Mashonganyika Fault, and is eight kilometres north of Arcadia Lithium Mine.
Prospect owns the claim outright.
Prospect said it had cash reserves of over A$30.3 million (US$21.47 million), placing it in a good position to operate during the current year.
In Zimbabwe and the larger sub-Saharan African region, the company is targeting mining projects involving raw materials for batteries and electrification.

Takeover Of Goromonzi-based Arcadia Lithium Mine Attracts Investors For Prospect

Zimbabwe’s <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zimbabwe-bans-export-of-raw-lithium/">ban on the exportation of raw lithium</a> could trigger a rise in the price of lithium and by-products globally, miners have said.
The southern African nation is the world’s sixth-largest producer and the largest lithium miner on the continent. 
Its decision to ban raw lithium exports aims to make it a bigger player in EV battery production and support its clean energy transition.
Chris Berry, president of commodities advisory firm House Mountain Partners in New York said Chinese firms that had made recent lithium investments in Zimbabwe would need to build processing facilities there so they can export higher-value lithium chemicals.
Berry is cited by The Herald, a state-run newspaper, as saying building the facilities would be at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars. He said: 
<blockquote>
There is a great deal of capital required to build chemical conversion facilities outside of China, not to mention the two or three-year lead time necessary to actually complete construction and commissioning.
</blockquote>
He added if more countries followed suit, it could have wider implications, such as higher prices for lithium and other raw materials.
Zimbabwe produced 1 200 tonnes of lithium in 2021, making it the sixth-largest miner globally behind Brazil (1 900 tonnes), Argentina (6 200 tonnes), China (14 000 tonnes), Chile (26 000 tonnes) and Australia (55 000 tonnes).
Sinomine Resource Group recently acquired “the world’s largest-known lithium deposit in Zimbabwe”, the Bikita mine, and has invested more than $200m into expanding it.
The British Geological Survey published a report in 2021 identifying multiple new potential lithium sources in Zimbabwe, which were either proven to be feasible for development or already in development. 
State media reported that Chinese companies Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt, Sinomine Resource Group and Chengxin Lithium Group had acquired lithium projects worth a combined US$679m and begun progress on processing facilities, exempting them from the ban.

"Zimbabwe's Ban On Exportation Of Raw Lithium Could Trigger Price Hike Globally"

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Goromonzi">Goromonzi</a> North legislator <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Ozias_Bvute">Ozias Bvute</a> (ZANU PF) has said order has been restored in Goromonzi North after security forces evicted thousands of lithium hunters who last month invaded Goromonzi North in Mashonaland East province.
Scores of unemployed youths and buyers late last year descended in the area located near the recently established Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe mine in Acturus.
The artisanal miners were gathering lithium ore, selling it for around US$10 per wheelbarrow to buyers who were reportedly selling the same ore for US$400 per tonne, <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200005685/sanity-returns-in-lithium-rich-goromonzi">NewsDay</a> reported.
Ozias Bvute said mining will be done following due processes. NewsDay quotes him as saying:

This will benefit both miners and the nation at large. I gathered that mining is now done in tributes and a number of youths from Goromonzi are benefiting.
</blockquote>
Illegal lithium mining in Goromonzi had resulted in massive environmental degradation, with miners also conducting their operations without ablution facilities.
This has been happening in various parts of the country where lithium was discovered.

The chaos prompted the government to deploy security forces.
The government has also banned the exportation of raw lithium ore, preferring value addition. Nevertheless, cases of the exportation of raw lithium are still being reported.

Security Forces Evict Thousands Of Lithium Hunters Who Had Invaded Goromonzi

A Chinese firm, Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt Co Ltd, says it will employ hundreds of Zimbabweans during the construction and production phases of the Arcadia lithium project.
Huayou announced the acquisition of the US$372 million Arcadia lithium project from Prospect Resources Plc and minority shareholders on 20 April 2022.
The firm committed to investing US$300 million to develop the mine and construct a processing plant over the next 12 months.
On Friday, 19 May, Huayou said the mine will have capacity to treat about 4.5 million tonnes of ore per annum.
This translates to about 400 000 tonnes of lithium concentrate per annum. The company said:
<blockquote>
Huayou estimates that there will be more than 600 Zimbabweans employed during the construction phase while direct employment during the production phase will be between 700 and 900 employees.
… There will be a focus on training and development, as well as finding suitable graduates from universities in Zimbabwe for attachment programmes.
</blockquote>
Huayou has already invested in a local school, Vhuta, which is near the mine site as part of its corporate social responsibility.
