<p>The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has called for the immediate and unconditional lifting of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe. In a statement on October 25, 2023, to commemorate Anti-Sanctions Day, Mahamat expressed worry about the adverse effects of these sanctions on Zimbabwe’s socio-economic progress, especially during the global food and energy crises and the ongoing post-Covid-19 recovery efforts. He emphasized the need to lift the sanctions to support Zimbabwe’s development and recovery. Read the statement:</p>
<blockquote>
<p><em>The Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat once again renews the longstanding AU demand for the immediate and unconditional lifting of sanctions imposed against institutions and individuals of the Republic of Zimbabwe, and in full support of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) position on the issue.</em></p>
<p><em>The Chairperson wishes to acknowledge subsequent engagement with the European Union through political dialogue, as encouraging. In this regard, the Chairperson encourages all parties to continue dialogue with the view to end all remaining sanctions against Zimbabwe.</em></p>
<p><em> The Chairperson, however, remains extremely concerned by the negative impact the sanctions continue to have on Zimbabwe’s socio-economic development amid the current global food and energy crises, including post Covid-19 recovery efforts.</em></p>
<p><em>The Chairperson reaffirms the continued commitment of the African Union to support the brotherly nation of Zimbabwe in mobilising efforts for the complete lifting of all remaining sanctions.</em></p>
<p><em>In this regard, the African Union associates itself with the statement made by President João Gonçalves Lourenço, President of the Republic of Angola and current Chairperson of SADC on the subject.</em></p>

<p>Zimbabwe faced sanctions from Western powers, such as the United States and the United Kingdom, starting in the early 2000s. These sanctions were imposed in response to the fast-track land reform program, which resulted in the displacement of numerous white farmers. Since then, the sanctions have been regularly reviewed and renewed each year.</p>

AU Demands Unconditional Lifting Of Sanctions Imposed Against Zimbabwe

<p>The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) has criticised ZANU PF for alleged political indoctrination of learners amid reports that they are being forced to participate in the ruling party’s political events.</p>
<p>Earlier this week, hundreds of learners across the country missed lessons after they were reportedly forced to take part in anti-sanctions marches.</p>
<p>ARTUZ president Obert Masaraure said learners should be in class preparing for examinations and not being abused by politicians. Said Masaraure:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>The ruling party is disrupting learners when they are supposed to be preparing for examinations; this is the same government that is presiding over examination leaks and a serious education crisis.</p>
<p>It is sad to note that the learners being abused are the sons and daughters of working people.</p>
<p>The sons and daughters of the abusers are insulated in elite private schools and exotic learning centres.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>The Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP) claimed that ZANU PF directed schools in Harare to mobilise pupils to take part in ant-sanctions marches on 25 October.</p>
<p>However, speaking to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200002614/zanu-pf-politicising-education"><span><strong>NewsDay</strong></span></a>, Primary and Secondary Education ministry spokesperson Taungana Ndoro denied that pupils were forced to march against sanctions. He said:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>We have not ordered anyone, but its common cause that civic education on the matter has taken root, and its beginning to strongly espouse Unesco`s definition that children should be educated to become clear-thinking and enlightened citizens who participate in their society’s decisions.</p>
<p>Therefore, as we embrace our curriculum, it follows that without coercion, schools are bent on voluntarily holding anti-sanction events and expressing the impact they have on their society.</p>
</blockquote>


"ZANU PF Abusing Children Of The Poor"

<p>The government reportedly tricked villagers into travelling to Masvingo for an anti-sanctions march on Tuesday on the pretext that they were going to Bikita’s for the funeral of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s grandson, Yasha Mafidi Mnangagwa.</p>
<p>A disgruntled villager told <em>NewsDay</em> that they were informed that they will be ferried to Mafidi’s funeral and after 7 Oclock, were told that all the buses had left. She said:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>We were then told that we were to go to the anti-sanctions march and be part of the programme in Masvingo.</p>
<p>They should have given us food but we have been told that the food available is for people from this side.</p>
<p>They told us there is no food for us or T-shirts.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Another lady, who said she was on hypertension medication, said there was plenty of food available but they were just unwilling to share.</p>
<p>She said they could have abandoned the march if they were close to their homes but they had no option other than to wait for the buses availed by the government. She said:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>We boarded the buses around 4 AM to travel to the funeral but we were later told that we should take part in the anti-sanctions march.</p>
<p>We have eaten nothing so far. We came to the local board and we waited there for hours.</p>
<p>When the buses arrived, we were instructed to board and were brought here and now we have been made to wait again. It’s unfair.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Meanwhile, the opposition CCC has criticised ZANU PF for infringing on children’s right to education by force-marching them to march against sanctions. CCC said:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>Children have the right to be protected from all kinds of abuse including participating in political activities. We strongly condemn the abuse of children that we witnessed across the country on Tuesday.</p>
<p>Children were forced to participate in political activities, which is a gross violation of their rights.</p>
</blockquote>

Villagers Blocked From Travelling To ED Grandson's Funeral, Taken To Anti-sanctions March

<p>The Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP) has condemned the politicisation of education after ZANU PF and the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education reportedly assigned teachers to mobilise learners for anti-sanctions marches on Tuesday, 25 October.</p>
<p>In a statement, ZPP said it was regrettable that learners were made to abandon lessons and take part in the march at a time some of them are writing public examinations. ZPP said:</p>
<blockquote>
<p><em>ZPP reports that the ruling party ZANU PF has mobilised pupils from different schools in Harare to convene for an anti-sanctions march and exhibition at Moffat Primary School in Arcadia, Harare. </em></p>
<p><em>The activity is being engineered by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.</em></p>
<p><em>Some teachers across the province have been assigned to mobilise pupils to do arts, particularly poetry, drama, and traditional dances during the anti-sanctions campaign.</em></p>
<p><em>This is in violation of Section 75 (a) of the Constitution which states that all citizens and permanent residents of Zimbabwe have a right to education.</em></p>
<p><em>This is also during the time students are sitting for their final examinations. ZPP condemns the politicisation of the education system.</em></p>

ZANU PF Mobilised Schoolchildren For Anti-sanctions March - ZPP

<p>The MDC T outfit led by Thokozani Khupe has denounced sanctions imposed on 83 individuals and 37 institutes by the west, but also said people should not blame sanctions for their own failures, CITE Org reports.</p>
<p>This was contained in a statement that was released by the court resurrected MDC T 2014 structures commemorating the Zimbabwe Anti sanctions day which also said economic saboteurs must be brought to book.</p>
<p>The statement by the Khupe led party which was released by Tapiwa Mashakada, MDC-T Secretary for Finance and Economic Affairs reads in part:</p>
<blockquote><p>Whist we call for the unconditional removal of sanctions, we also urge the government to address policy missteps and corruption, whose net effect on the economy may exceed the economic impact of sanctions. Economic saboteurs must be brought to book.</p>
<p>As a pro-poor and labour backed party, the MDC-T laments the suffering of the people and workers who are bearing the brunt of sanctions.</p>
<p>The economy is partly hamstrung by sanctions due to restrictions faced by corresponding banks and difficulties in accessing new capital as Zidera gives the United States of America veto powers on the Boards of the main Multi-Lateral bodies such as the IMF and World Bank.”</p>
<p>Finally let us desist from blaming sanctions for our own acts of omission and commission.</p>
<p>In calling for the unconditional removal of sanctions we must be honest and accept that some of the economic policies implemented in the past stoked inflation, the budget deficit, currency and exchange rate volatility.  Let us fix the issues we control and not just mourn about sanctions.</p></blockquote>

<blockquote><p>We do have members of the opposition MDC who have recanted. Who have basically said we were wrong, we opposed the empowerment of our people and I think that in this regard Madam Khupe basically is now singing a different song on the issue of sanctions</p>
<p>She is now calling along with us for the unconditional removal of sanctions. But you get your Chamisa, your Biti, your Coltart. They remain unrepentant.</p></blockquote>

Khupe Denounces Sanctions But Says We Shouldn't Blame Them For Our Errors

<p>SADC through its executive Secretary Dr. Stergomna Lawrence Tax has urged fellow Southern Africans to support Zimbabwe during its Anti Sanctions campaign slated for this coming Sunday, the 25th of October, the National Anti Sanctions day.</p>

WATCH: SADC's Dr Tax Urges All Southern Afrikaners To Support Zimbabwe In Fighting Sanctions

<p>Southern African Development Community (SADC) executive secretary, Dr Stergomena Lawrence Tax has said the regional bloc will launch a campaign ahead of Zimbabwe’s anti-sanctions day to try and compel western countries to remove sanctions against beleaguered Zimbabwe, The Sunday Mail reports.</p>
<p>According to the publication the campaign will see:</p>
<blockquote>
<p><span>The Sadc secretariat taking the fight to the global arena, to confront the United States and its Western allies. </span><span>In addition, Sadc ambassadors in various Western capitals have been directed to undertake intense lobbying on behalf of Zimbabwe in their host countries.</span></p>

<p>Responding to questions about the campaign Dr Tax said:</p>

<p><span>With this campaign, Sadc is engaging the nations that have imposed sanctions, in particular the United States of America and the European Union (EU), to put the lives of the Zimbabwean people first.</span></p>
<p><span>This year, Sadc will intensify engagements with the countries that have imposed the sanctions, and urge them to lift the measures.</span></p>
<p><span>Sadc firmly believes in the power of dialogue, which remains an integral component of Sadc’s efforts to call for the removal of sanctions. </span></p>

<p>Dr Tax further explained the campaign and said SADC stands with the people of Zimbabwe in fighting the sanctions imposed on 37 entities and 83 individuals and said:</p>

Put The Lives Of The Zimbabwean People First - SADC's Dr Tax To The EU & The US

<p>SADC and AU reportedly sent delegates to rally behind the Zim government’s call for the removal of sanctions the Herald reports. Tanzania, Mozambique and the Pan African Parliament were the ones noted by the Herald to have sent solidarity messages to the govt of Zimbabwe.</p>
<blockquote><p>SADC Chairperson and Tanzanian President Dr John Magufuli’s solidarity message was read by Tanzania’s Charge de Affairs Brigadier Perez Alfonso, while Mozambican Ambassador to Zimbabwe,Mr Fancisco Cigarro, delivered a message on behalf diplomats from the SADC bloc.</p>
<p>The Pan-African Parliament also threw its weight behind Zimbabwe in a message read by its vice president Chief <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Fortune_Charumbira">Fortune Charumbira</a>.</p></blockquote>

SADC, AU Support Zim's Anti Sanctions Day - Report

<p>The Zimbabwean community in the UK yesterday join the country and SADC in calling for the removal of sanctions the Herald reports. The initiative which was lead by Zanu-PF UK branch delivered a petition to UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s office which read in part:</p>

Zanu PF Members  In the UK Joined The Nation In Calling For The Removal Of Sanctions - Report

<p>On the same day that some Zimbabweans marched against trade and travel embargos imposed on Zimbabwe by the US and the EU, the US announced that it will be adding one more person to the list of persons who are targeted by the embargos.</p>
<p>The matter came to light after US state secretary for state, Mike Pompeo Tweeted:</p>
<blockquote><p>Today, I publicly designated<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Owen_Ncube"> Owen Ncube</a> for his involvement in a gross violation of human rights in Zimbabwe. State-sanctioned violence in Zimbabwe must end now and those responsible for human rights violations must be held accountable</p></blockquote>

Owen Ncube To Be Put Under US Sanctions

<p>Speaking in an interview with The Chronicle, The Zimbabwe Confederation of Midwives have said they are 100% behind the anti-sanctions march as sanctions also affected maternal healthcare.</p>
<p>Speaking to the publication the ZICOM president said:</p>
<blockquote><p>We are gathering here for an annual general meeting as we seek to deliberate on a number of issues. One of the issues to be discussed is brain drain which has affected the profession.</p>
<p>We could be joining the anti-sanctions march tomorrow (yesterday) but we couldn’t cancel the conference. If removal of sanctions will make the economy bounce back and improve the health sector, we are fully behind the campaign and we will be eagerly waiting as midwives to save lives.</p></blockquote>
<p>The healthcare system was the first to fold due to the economic meltdown, with doctors having been on strike for a considerable time and <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/12/03/junior-doctors-at-public-hospitals-down-tools-again-citing-poor-working-conditions/">most major hospitals battling some problems</a> including using old machinery or not having adequate material to used to treat patients due to various reasons.</p>

<blockquote><p>As the people’s movement, the MDC has resolved to have nothing to do with any marches that do not seek to address the bread and butter issues that are affecting the majority of Zimbabweans today.</p>
<p>The long-standing crisis in Zimbabwe has been caused by the lack of confidence by our country’s citizens in the current political leadership of the country.</p>
<p>This is a result of the culture of bad governance and illegitimacy that rose out of a disputed stolen presidential elections results.</p>
<p>Indeed, the lack of good governance, legitimate and accountable leadership as evidenced by rigged or stolen elections; State-sanctioned gross human rights violations; rampant corruption; police brutality; arbitrary arrests and persecution of opposition politicians and civil society activists; abductions and forced disappearances; abuse of food aid as a political weapon; suppression of rural communities; cartels or state capture; among other vices that military against the people of Zimbabwe.</p>
<p>Zimbabwe is where it is today, largely due to the fact the country is being led by selfish and corrupt leaders who have no popular electoral mandate from the majority of Zimbabwean voters.</p>
<p>At the core of the national collapse are a crisis of leadership, a crisis of governance and a crisis of legitimacy.</p>
<p>Put simply, we have an illegitimate leadership that will never put first the interests of the long-suffering people of Zimbabwe.</p>
<p>It is the MDC’s view as aptly summarized by our RELOAD strategy, that unless and until the critical issues of political legitimacy and outstanding comprehensive reforms are fully resolved, Zimbabwe will remain in the doldrums, doomed as a country, without any hope of socio-economic recovery whatsoever.</p>

MDC Statement On Anti-sanctions Day {Full Text}

<p>Bulawayo civil servants have been ordered by the govt to attend the anti-sanctions day march without fail as there will be a register for accountability purposes. This came to light as a picture to that effect went viral on social media.  The letter reads:</p>

<p>The <a href="https://twitter.com/HeraldZimbabwe/status/1186634029703020544" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><em>Herald reports</em></a> that the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Paul_Mavima" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><strong>Paul Mavima</strong></a> has advised schools and officials involved in examination processes as well as candidates that all Advanced and Ordinary school examinations scheduled for Friday 25 October are going on as scheduled.</p>
<p>Mavima’s statement follows the leaking of a letter written by Secretary in the Ministry, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Tumisang_Thabela" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><strong>Tumisang Thabela</strong></a>, to the Provincial Education Director Harare Metropolitan Province, one Kateera, <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/10/22/govt-orders-teachers-pupils-to-attend-anti-sanctions-march/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">requesting him to facilitate the release of 2 304 learners and teachers for the anti-sanctions march on the same day.</a></p>
<p>Several reports had indicted that public school examinations scheduled for Friday, 25 October 2019 have been postponed.</p>

<p>An anti-sanctions march pencilled for Friday this week will cost the Zimbabwean government US$4 million dollars, a report claims.</p>
<p>Marches will be held in all of the country’s 10 provinces and will involve cabinet ministers and top civil servants as well as tens of thousands of ordinary people. A top bureaucrat who spoke to <em>NewsDay</em> is quoted as saying:</p>
<blockquote><p>The event will not consume less than $4 million in transport costs, food and loss of production costs given that no business will happen in most government offices on the day. Ministers, top civil servants and security personnel will be deployed for the event.</p></blockquote>
<p>The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has thrown its weight behind the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Government_of_Zimbabwe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><strong>government of Zimbabwe</strong></a> for the Anti-sanctions march.</p>
<p>However, political commentators have argued that the sanctions will not be revoked since the people targeted have continued to violate citizens’ fundamental human rights with impunity.</p>

Anti-sanctions March To Cost US$4 Million - Report

<p>The biggest opposition party, the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/MDC_Alliance">MDC Alliance</a> has notified ZRP of its intention to hold the demo a day before the planned SADC Anti Sanctions day ZimMorning Post revealed.</p>
<p>This was revealed by the MDC Secretary-General who spoke to the publication and said:</p>
<blockquote><p>…We are calling on Zimbabweans to come out and exercise their constitutional rights against the economic collapse, the erosion of workers’ salaries and the increase in cost of living.</p>
<p>When we went to the police we, gathered that there was no organisation that had applied to demonstrate on October 24 or October 25. We are not aware of anything, save for Press stories indicating that there is what is being called an anti-sanctions demonstration</p></blockquote>

<p>The call comes when the SADC has stood with Zimbabwe in calling for the removal of the sanctions imposed on the Southern African country by the USA, the UK, the EU and other Western states over alleged human rights abuses.</p>
<p>The opposition party argues that the SADC which is vocal on the removal of sanctions must also raise its voice when the government is harassing its people.</p>

MDC Urges SADC To Speak Against "Govt Brutality On Citizens"

<p>South Africa’s parliament on Thursday 17 October urged members of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) to support a motion calling for an immediate lifting of economic sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe. FULL TEXT: South Africa Calls For Removal Of Sanctions Imposed On Zimbabwe

<p>An Anti-Sanctions Musical Gala by various artists will be held at the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/National_Sports_Stadium" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><strong>National Sports Stadium</strong></a> on October 25 as part of events for the SADC-sponsored Anti-Sanctions Solidarity March.</p>
<p>This was revealed by the Minister of Information and Publicity, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Monica_Mutsvangwa" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><strong>Monica Mutsvanga</strong></a> while addressing reporters during a post-cabinet media briefing on Tuesday. She said:</p>
<blockquote><p>The proceedings at the National Sports Stadium will culminate in the staging of the Anti-Sanctions Musical Gala by various artistes.</p>
<p>Similar events shall also be held in all provincial capitals and district centres throughout the country.</p></blockquote>
<p>Preceding the gala is a march towards the National Sports Stadium, where Government, business, religious leaders, the academia, civil society groups will call for the removal of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe.</p>

Anti-Sanctions Musical Gala Set For National Sports Stadium

<p>The president of splinter MDC, Dr Thokozani Khupe has called for the removal of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe saying they were choking efforts to resuscitate the economy.</p>
<p>The United States of America, the United Kingdom and the European Union imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe on the turn of the millennium over alleged Human Rights Abuses.</p>
<p>Khupe speaks when Zimbabwe and her SADC counterparts declared<a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/08/19/sadc-proclaims-october-25-zimbabwe-anti-sanctions-day/"> 25 October an Anti-Sanctions Day.</a></p>
<p>Meanwhile, the USA, EU and UK are <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/10/04/its-no-secret-weve-a-problematic-relationship-with-zimbabwe-us-envoy/">adamant that the sanctions were imposed on individuals</a> within the ruling ZANU PF and a few entities not on Zimbabwe as a country.</p>

<p>The First Lady of Zimbabwe, Auxillia Mnangagwa has urged female war veterans to join the anti-sanctions campaign.</p>
<p>Addressing female former freedom fighters from Bulawayo, Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South provinces, Mrs Mnangagwa said:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>You are important to us for you liberated this country. However, the war is not over yet, we have another war on the 25th (of October) where we will be fighting against sanctions.</strong></p>
<p><strong>We want the sanctions imposed on our country to be removed. They have caused untold suffering. We also want to thank SADC for standing with us in this fight.</strong></p></blockquote>
<p>She added that people should not be partisan about sanctions since they affect every citizen. Meanwhile, USA and other Western states including the UK, and the European Union insist that sanctions are targeted on certain individuals and entities.</p>
