The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) has criticised ZANU PF for alleged political indoctrination of learners amid reports that they are being forced to participate in the ruling party’s political events.
Earlier this week, hundreds of learners across the country missed lessons after they were reportedly forced to take part in anti-sanctions marches.
ARTUZ president Obert Masaraure said learners should be in class preparing for examinations and not being abused by politicians. Said Masaraure:

The ruling party is disrupting learners when they are supposed to be preparing for examinations; this is the same government that is presiding over examination leaks and a serious education crisis.
It is sad to note that the learners being abused are the sons and daughters of working people.
The sons and daughters of the abusers are insulated in elite private schools and exotic learning centres.
</blockquote>
The Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP) claimed that ZANU PF directed schools in Harare to mobilise pupils to take part in ant-sanctions marches on 25 October.
However, speaking to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200002614/zanu-pf-politicising-education">NewsDay</a>, Primary and Secondary Education ministry spokesperson Taungana Ndoro denied that pupils were forced to march against sanctions. He said:

We have not ordered anyone, but its common cause that civic education on the matter has taken root, and its beginning to strongly espouse Unesco`s definition that children should be educated to become clear-thinking and enlightened citizens who participate in their society’s decisions.
Therefore, as we embrace our curriculum, it follows that without coercion, schools are bent on voluntarily holding anti-sanction events and expressing the impact they have on their society.

"ZANU PF Abusing Children Of The Poor"

The government reportedly tricked villagers into travelling to Masvingo for an anti-sanctions march on Tuesday on the pretext that they were going to Bikita’s for the funeral of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s grandson, Yasha Mafidi Mnangagwa.
A disgruntled villager told NewsDay that they were informed that they will be ferried to Mafidi’s funeral and after 7 Oclock, were told that all the buses had left. She said:
<blockquote>
We were then told that we were to go to the anti-sanctions march and be part of the programme in Masvingo.
They should have given us food but we have been told that the food available is for people from this side.
They told us there is no food for us or T-shirts.
</blockquote>
Another lady, who said she was on hypertension medication, said there was plenty of food available but they were just unwilling to share.
She said they could have abandoned the march if they were close to their homes but they had no option other than to wait for the buses availed by the government. She said:

We boarded the buses around 4 AM to travel to the funeral but we were later told that we should take part in the anti-sanctions march.
We have eaten nothing so far. We came to the local board and we waited there for hours.
When the buses arrived, we were instructed to board and were brought here and now we have been made to wait again. It’s unfair.
</blockquote>
Meanwhile, the opposition CCC has criticised ZANU PF for infringing on children’s right to education by force-marching them to march against sanctions. CCC said:
<blockquote>
Children have the right to be protected from all kinds of abuse including participating in political activities. We strongly condemn the abuse of children that we witnessed across the country on Tuesday.
Children were forced to participate in political activities, which is a gross violation of their rights.
</blockquote>
On Tuesday, the Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP) condemned the politicisation of education after ZANU PF and the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education reportedly assigned teachers to mobilise learners for anti-sanctions marches.

Villagers Blocked From Travelling To ED Grandson's Funeral, Taken To Anti-sanctions March

Seventy-four per cent of people who took part in an online poll conducted by ZimLive said they want sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by Western powers to be ‘deepened’.
The publication asked its readers ahead of the anti-sanctions day if the targeted sanctions should be ‘lifted’ or ‘deepened’ and a shocking 74 per cent of the over 6 000 people who voted were in favour of the embargo being broadened. Only 26 per cent said the sanctions should be lifted.
This could be attributable to lies that have been said about the sanctions over the years, with some people arguing that the sanctions only affect the targeted individuals.
According to a 20 August 2018 special report by newZWire, the truth of the matter is that:
<blockquote>… [American] sanctions have had a real impact on Zimbabwe’s economy, but ZANU-PF is obviously lying and exaggerating when it blames sanctions for everything that has gone wrong economically.
Sanctions are not responsible for corruption, ZANU-PF’s wanton looting of national resources, and its overspending.
Equally, those that completely deny the impact of US sanctions are dishonest. Beyond that, the suggestion that democratic reforms alone will be enough to have the US lift sanctions ignores the history of ZIDERA, the politics of key proponents, and some of ZIDERA’s key demands on land.</blockquote>

It has been one year since the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) declared 25th October as the day for SADC to campaign as a region for the unconditional removal of sanctions imposed on the Republic of Zimbabwe.
While significant progress has been made since the decision was made in 2019, Zimbabwe remains under sanctions that significantly undermine the country’s capacity to respond to socio-economic challenges that include three successive droughts; recovery from the effects of Tropical Cyclone Idai; poor access to affordable lines of credit on the global market; and servicing of her debt obligations.
The prevailing COVID-19 pandemic has further placed serious constraints on the Government of Zimbabwe’s ability to fund programmes, as well as investments in key economic sectors.
SADC, therefore, reiterates the call for these sanctions to be unconditionally lifted for Zimbabwe to improve the livelihoods of her citizens and develop unhindered.
We are encouraged that SADC’s call has received some attention, and as such we applaud the recent call by the United Nations Secretary-General, Dr Antonio Guterres, and the UN Human Rights Commission, for the removal of unilateral coercive measures, as they have significant negative impacts on access to COVID-19 prevention measures and post-recovery efforts.
We welcome the pertinent conclusions and recommendations of the Report of the Special Rapporteur on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights, which also found out that countries targeted by unilateral sanctions are constrained in their quest to effectively respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.
We are acutely aware that the continuation of sanctions not only impacts negatively on socio-economic progress in Zimbabwe but also on the attainment of the SADC Vision 2050, the African Union Agenda 2063 and ultimately the 2030 United Nations Agenda for Sustainable Development.
As SADC, we fully support the very constructive re-engagement dialogue between the Republic of Zimbabwe and her global partners, including those that have maintained sanctions on Zimbabwe.
We call on all progressive forces to lend diplomatic, political and moral support to the re-engagement efforts.
As the world grapples with containing the COVID-19 pandemic, and mobilizing resources aimed at building resilient economies, it is important to observe the collective resolve that has been built to ensure that everybody is on board, in line with the UN Member States’ pledge to ensure no one is left behind.
For SADC as a region, the call for the unconditional removal of sanctions assumes even greater importance.
It is not just a solidarity call in support of Zimbabwe, but also a clarion call for justice, fairness and full enjoyment of human rights.
The sanctions are no longer relevant and are detrimental to the socio-economic development and self-determination of Zimbabweans.
On a very encouraging and positive note, SADC notes with satisfaction the resolve of the Government of the Republic of Zimbabwe, and of His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa, to continue implementing reforms aimed at stabilising the economy and the financial sector.
Furthermore, we continue to witness political and legislative reforms that have seen, among others, the Public Order and Security Act (POSA); Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA); and the Indigenization and Economic Empowerment Act being repealed, and efforts to align legislation with the Constitution of Zimbabwe.
The recently concluded landmark Global Compensation Deed Agreement, signed between the Government of Zimbabwe and former farm-owners, is evidence of the Government’s commitment to addressing the contentious issues emanating from the land reform programme, which was introduced to redress historical land inequalities that existed along racial and class lines.
Such developments are evidence that Zimbabwe is on a positive trajectory, and the lifting of sanctions will accelerate the realisation of positive milestones.
As we celebrate the 75th Anniversary since the establishment of our community of nations, the United Nations, let us also draw inspiration from our Charter and this year’s theme, “The Future We Want, The United Nations We Need”, and remain faithful to our global commitment to leave no one behind.
Sanctions without UN approval are a violation of our Charter and run against the spirit of multilateralism.
As SADC, we reaffirm the urgency of the removal of all sanctions imposed on the Republic of Zimbabwe.
The sanctions must be removed now for the good of the region and the world.</blockquote>

FULL TEXT: SADC Chairperson's Statement On Antisanctions Day

CBZ Holdings has been warned by the United States’ Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) over engagement in opaque payment practices.
That was after CBZ had on July 25, 2008, allegedly provided indirect access to the US financial system for ZB Bank and Bank which is on the US’s list of Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons (the SDN List).
The act is said to be in apparent violation of S541.201 of the Zimbabwe Sanctions Regulations, 31 CFR part 541 (ZSR). In a warning letter written to CBZ, OFAC said:

<div dir="auto">After considering all relevant information in its possession as the General Factor Affecting Administrative Action set forth in the Economic Sanctions Enforcement Guidelines, OFAC has made a determination to issue this cautionary letter in response to these apparent violations.</div>

<div dir="auto">We urge CBZ to use greater caution to ensure that it does not process transactions in violation of the sanctions programmes administered by OFAC.</div>

"Be Warned," - CBZ Escapes U.S. Sanctions

The People’s Republic of China has called for quick removal of sanctions which were imposed on Zimbabwe by Western countries chief among them, the USA, the UK and the European Union.
The Asian country’s position was revealed by its <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/01/12/pictures-chinas-foreign-affairs-minister-arrives-in-zimbabwe/">Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr Wang Yi who is currently in Zimbabwe on a mission to strengthen relations of the two countries.</a>
Speaking at a Press conference on Sunday after a meeting with his Zimbabwean counterpart, Minister Sibusiso Moyo, Mr Wang Yi said:
<blockquote>The unilateral sanctions imposed by some countries and organisations on Zimbabwe have no basis in international law and they violate the legitimate development rights of Zimbabwe. China fully supports the just aspirations of Zimbabwe and African countries to quickly remove those sanctions on Zimbabwe.</blockquote>
His remarks echo those of the ZANU PF, Zimbabwean government and most African countries who are calling for the removal of the sanctions which were imposed on Zimbabwe on the turn of the millennium over alleged human rights violations during the fast track land reform programme.

China Calls For "Quick Removal" Of Sanctions On Zimbabwe

The Tanzanian government will push for the removal of the United States of America and European Union sanctions against Zimbabwe during its tenure as chair of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Southern_African_Development_Community" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Southern African Development Community (SADC)</a>.
In an interview with a local publication, The Citizen, Tanzania’s Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister, Palamagamba Kabudi, said:
<blockquote>This is the country’s agenda. Mozambique will continue with this advocacy if our term expires without success, the same way we succeeded in the industrial week that started four years ago.</blockquote>
On Friday, the government of Zimbabwe rallied citizens to take part in coordinated marches calling for the lifting of sanctions.
However, the demonstrations were considered a flop after thousands of Zimbabweans stayed at home.

Govt Orders Teachers & Pupils To Attend Anti-sanctions March

Spokesperson of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/National_Patriotic_Front_(NPF)" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">National Patriotic Front (NPF)</a>, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Jealousy_Mawarire" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Jealousy Mawarire</a>, said that the anti-sanctions march will not change anything as long as the ZANU PF-led government continues to violate the constitution.
Speaking to NewsDay ahead of the anti-sanctions march to be conducted on 25 October this year, Mawarire said:
<blockquote>For sanctions to go, the government has to respect the Constitution. They have to stop abducting their own people and allow freedom of expression, freedom to demonstrate and to stop this rule by the gun. The marches will not help change anything.</blockquote>
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has thrown its weight behind the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Government_of_Zimbabwe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">government of Zimbabwe</a> for the Anti-sanctions march.
However, political commentators have argued that the sanctions will not be revoked since the people targeted have continued to violate citizens’ fundamental human rights with impunity.

European Union (EU) ambassador to Zimbabwe, Timo Olkkonen, said that the SADC anti-sanctions lobby is not convincing as the economic restrictions have a limited effect on the country’s economy.
Olkkonen told <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Alpha_Media_Holdings" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Alpha Media Holdings</a>’ HStv recently that the SADC is, however, at liberty to state what it wants. He said:
<blockquote>Well, Sadc has the liberty of stating what it wants, that is their political statement that they came out with recently. When you look at the factual assessment about the facts, because in the Sadc communiqué, they were talking about the economic effects and the unfairness of it and from that perspective, we will not be convinced because we were just outlining the limited effect of the economic restrictions that the economic measures would have.</blockquote>
SADC has been lobbying for the removal of the sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by Western countries, arguing that the embargo negatively affects the whole sub-region.
To that end, SADC has designated the 25th of October this year as a day for calling for the sanctions’ removal in solidarity with Zimbabwe.
