An official in the Ministry of Health and Child Care has said HIV-negative people can now take ARVs as an HIV prevention measure.
The Director HIV and TB in the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Dr Owen Mugurungi, told <a href="https://newziana.co.zw/2023/12/20/arvs-for-hiv-negative-people/">New Ziana</a> that 95 per cent of all sexually active Zimbabweans know their HIV status. He said:

So, we are saying when one thinks of prevention measures, he or she must choose from our variety of services, including condoms and Pre- pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) or Post post-exposure prophylaxis as well as ARVs.
Now even an HIV negative person can take ARVs as an HIV prevention measure.
We notice that many couples manage to go for ante-natal care during pregnancy and have known their results.
However, we have also noticed that during the first 42 days after giving birth men are then going outside and do whatever they do there, but in the end bring the disease back home.
They infect their wives and children thereafter, who will be breastfed.
So we are now saying mothers can take PrEP or ARVs during that period when they feel at risk. The same applies to everyone sexually active.

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has established the 95-95-95 targets, whereby 95% of PL-HIV should be diagnosed, 95% of those diagnosed with HIV should be receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART), and 95% of all those receiving ART should achieve viral suppression (VLS).
Mugurungi also said Zimbabwe has enough ARVs to take it through to the next three years, adding that the Global Fund, which is the major source of HIV health funding to Zimbabwe will take the country through.
The Ministry of Health and Child Care has scrapped all user fees for accessing HIV and TB prevention and treatment services at all public health centres.

HIV Negative People Can Take ARVs - Ministry Of Health Official

73 countries in different continents face an ARV stock outage as the COVID-19 pandemic grounds many operations worldwide, Health Times reports. According to the publication, 24 of those countries have already reported that their stocks were either critically low or they were having problems restocking the life-saving drug.
Speaking about the report which he called deeply concerning, WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus who said:
<blockquote>Countries and their development partners must do all they can to ensure that people who need HIV treatment continue to access it. We cannot let the COVID-19 pandemic undo the hard-won gains in the global response to this disease.</blockquote>
The looming predicament is reportedly caused by suppliers’ failure to ship out the drugs on time and a shut-down of land and air transport services, coupled with limited access to health services within countries as a result of the pandemic, according to the publication.

Possible ARV Stock Outages Threatens 73 Countries

The Ministry of Health and Child Care is working on a programme to roll out a new antiretroviral drug, Dolutegravir, which is more effective in viral suppression and has fewer side effects.
In a statement, the deputy director of HIV/Aids and STIs in the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Dr Tsitsi Apollo, said the drug works by reducing the ability of the HIV virus to make copies of itself. Dr Apollo said compared to other ARVs, Dolutegravir is safer although caution is required when taken by women of child bearing age. Said Dr Apollo:
<blockquote>Dolutegravir (DTG) is an antiretroviral drug used to treat HIV infection and is more tolerable to patients, meaning it has lesser side effects compared to other ARVs. It is used as part of combination therapy for the treatment of HIV and works by reducing the ability of the virus to make copies of itself. In May this year DTG will be first offered to newly diagnosed clients and by August 2019, existing clients already on ART will be offered DTG containing regimens. If the virus is not multiplying, there is less chances of the patient falling ill and therefore less likely to transmit the virus to others. In addition to rapid viral suppression, DTG also has higher genetic barrier, an inherently better ability to prevent the virus from being resistant to the drug compared to other ARVs</blockquote>

#MukupeMustFall Campaign Starts On Twitter After Mukupe Alleges Biti Is Taking ARVs

In a statement, the Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights (ZADHR) criticized Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Professor Jonathan Moyo for insinuating that anti-retroviral drugs (ARVs) could cause vomiting and diarrhoea. Speaking on microblogging site Twitter, Moyo had said:
<blockquote>The lot with my TL with crap about poison and food poison must note that chronic use of antibiotics or ARVs also induces vomiting and diarrhoea.</blockquote>
In a statement, the ZADHR said:
<blockquote>The Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights condemns in the strongest of terms the recent statements allegedly made by Prof Moyo on his Twitter account.
The message, which in our interpretation was part of his response to the Zanu PF circus over succession battles, if wrongly interpreted by the public may lead to defaulting of ART (antiretroviral therapy), ill-informed fear to be initiated on ART and as a disincentive for HIV counselling and testing.”
ZADHR maintains that as the country strives to achieve its HIV 90/90/90 targets, such irresponsible, unrestrained and misinformed assertions on ART that lead to a pervasive fear of ART usage must be publicly rebuked.
The minister, whose portfolio spans over the higher and tertiary institutions including the prestigious College of Health Sciences in Zimbabwe, is strongly advised to seek information and knowledge from the rich body of knowledge and research on HIV and Aids before making insensitive remarks on social media.</blockquote>
