The Airports Company of Zimbabwe (ACZ) has tightened security at the Victoria Falls International Airport to ensure the safety of passengers and its staff.
This comes after Fastjet Airline on Friday, 01 March notified authorities of an email that it received from one John Doe claiming a credible bomb/firearm threat to Zimbabwean airports.
Following the warning, President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s flight aborted its landing in Victoria Falls where he was scheduled to address a business conference.
A 26-year-old South African national, Cuan Reed Govender, was arrested and later fined US$300 after he was found in possession of some bullets at the Robert Mugabe International Airport on the day the email from John Doe referring to bombs was sent.
The following day (02 March), a 36-year-old Malaysian national, Lucy Kabethi Wanjiku was arrested at the Victoria Falls International Airport after she was found in possession of a live bullet.
In a statement to stakeholders, Victoria Falls Airport’s acting airport manager Vupenyu Shava, said:

In response to a bomb and firearm threat that was received on 1 March 2024, the Airports Company of Zimbabwe Private Limited has deemed it necessary to take immediate action to ensure the safety and security of both passengers and airport personnel.
Consequently, the company has decided to implement heightened security measures to level three (3), which is significantly higher than the normal baseline level.
These additional measures have been put in place to mitigate any potential risks to create a secure environment within the airport premises.

Only travelling passengers and airport staff are allowed into the terminal building and there will be strict access control at the Main Entrance, with all staff required to display passes at all times.
Shava said the front drop-off and pick-up zone of the International Terminal Building would also be temporarily sealed off.
He said there would be a secondary screening of passengers at the Boarding Gate, a physical search of all checked baggage and increased police presence in the Terminal Building.
Shava said no unaccompanied and mishandled baggage will be allowed while passenger luggage should be shrink-wrapped after physical searches have been carried out.

Security Tightened At Victoria Falls Airport

The Airports Company of Zimbabwe (ACZ) says the country’s airports are now operating normally after the Victoria Falls International Airport was closed briefly on Friday due to security concerns.
The country’s security systems were put on high alert yesterday in response to reports of a bomb or firearm threat targeting the country’s airports.
This was after Fastjet Airlines forwarded an e-mail message to Zimbabwean authorities which originated from one “John Doe” who claimed to have credible information that a bomb or firearm threat was targeting Zimbabwean airports.
However, speaking to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/airports-operating-normally-after-bomb-firearms-threat/">The Herald</a> last night ACZ chief executive officer Tawanda Gusha said security services have taken all precautions at airports to ensure safe travel. He said:
<blockquote>
(The) airports are operating including the Victoria Falls International Airport.
We want to assure our stakeholders and all those using airports that the security services have taken all precautions to ensure that the travelling public is safe.
</blockquote>
In an earlier statement yesterday, the Deputy Chief Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet (Presidential Communications), George Charamba, said President Emmerson Mnangagwa had cancelled a trip to Victoria Falls following the bomb or firearm threat.
He said security services were investigating the source and credibility of the “John Doe” email.

Airports Operating Normally After Bomb Threat - ACZ

The Airports Company of Zimbabwe (ACZ) is set to conduct a feasibility study on a piece of land in Mutasa District where the Grand Reef Airport near Mutare will be relocated.
Last Friday, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona, his deputy Joshua Sacco and Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution Misheck Mugadza, among other senior Government officials, toured the proposed airport site.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/mutasa-south-is-new-site-for-mutare-airport/">The Herald</a> after the tour, ACZ chief executive Tawanda Gusha said they expect to complete the feasibility study by the end of this year. Said Gusha:

We are expecting that before the end of the year, we will have completed the feasibility study and we will have submitted the study report to the ministry as well as the design brief that we think will serve this province.
We also think we will make the airport a successful commercial airport in this province. This position at the new site is almost 26km from the city of Mutare using the road that we used today which is really within the expected distances of airports from the city centres.
</blockquote>
Mhona said that upon completion, the airport will create employment for people in and around the area. The road that leads to the airport was going to be rehabilitated.
Mugadza said those people who would have to be moved for the construction site of the airport would be properly relocated to other areas.

Grand Reef Airport Set To Be Relocated To Mutasa

The Airports Company of Zimbabwe (ACZ) has apologised to stakeholders following the temporary disruption of service on a runway at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare on Monday 18 November.
In a statement, ACZ Public Relations and Communications Manager Tonderai Mangombe said that a RwandAir plane experienced a tyre burst resulting in the disruption. Said Mangombe:

The Airports Company of Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd (ACZ) would like to provide an update on the recent tyre burst incident involving RwandAir at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.
On 18 December 2023, RwandAir flight (WB110) with 65 passengers and 8 crew members en route to Cape Town experienced a tyre burst during take-off run at 1245hrs resulting in a temporary disruption of service on the runway.
We are pleased to report that there were no injuries recorded as a result of this incident.
The safety and well-being of all passengers and crew members are of utmost importance to us, and we commend the swift response and professionalism of the RwandAir crew and Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting Services in ensuring their safety.
The incident was resolved at 1510hrs, and we confirm that the runway has been cleared and normal operations have now resumed at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.
We extend our gratitude to all involved parties, including the RwandAir and Air Zimbabwe team, for their cooperation and assistance in swiftly resolving the situation.
ACZ would like to reaffirm to the public that the R. G. Mugabe International Airport has a state-of-the-art newly rehabilitated runway that meets all international safety standards and requirements.
Safety remains our top priority, and we are committed to optimising the customer’s travel experience through sustainable development and management of quality airports.
We apologize for any inconvenience caused to passengers and airlines due to the temporary disruption of service.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this period of disrupted service.

The runway could not be used from 12:45 PM to 3:10 PM and some airlines scheduled to land at the airport had to wait or divert to Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport in Bulawayo.
The causes of aircraft tyre bursts include underinflation or overinflation, and takeoff and landing strain.
Despite the ACZ declaring that the RGM Airport has a newly rehabilitated runway that meets all international safety standards, Zimbabwe’s infrastructure, especially roads and railway lines, is in a deplorable state.
The Government, through the Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (ZINARA), collects millions of dollars every year in the form of tollgate fees, but the country’s roads are littered with potholes, making most of the highways death traps.
The failure of the Government to repair and upgrade infrastructure has been attributed to misplaced priorities, diversion of funds, and corruption.

RwandAir Plane Tyre Burst Disrupts Flights At RGM Airport

The Robert Gabriel Mugabe International (RGMI) Airport expansion project is now 97% complete.
This was said by the Airports Company of Zimbabwe (ACZ) development manager, Engineer Shamiso Makova on Thursday while addressing delegates during a tour of RGM International Airport. Said Makova:

We are finalising installing of the equipment in those areas of the extension of the international terminal building.
We should be done with that work by the end of June 2023. Then we are going to refurbish the current terminal buildings and that work should be done by the end of December 2023.
We have also constructed two new aprons to accommodate our four extra aerobridges that have been installed.
For now, on our international apron, we can accommodate seven aircraft on the stands.
If we have more aircraft, then we will utilise the domestic apron that is still available for our own use.
</blockquote>
The expansion and upgrading of the terminal at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport are being done at a cost of US$153.
The company had similar projects at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport in Bulawayo and the Victoria Falls International Airport.
