President Emmerson Mnangagwa has elevated Air Vice Marshal John Jacob Nzvede to the prestigious rank of Air Marshal within the Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ). 
The legal basis for this promotion, reported by <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/air-marshal-nzvede-officially-takes-over-air-force-command/">The Herald</a>, lies in the Defence Act (Chapter 11:02), specifically Section 20, in conjunction with Statutory Instrument 257 of 2020, Section 19c, Sub-section 2c.
The relevant provision empowers the President, acting on the advice of the Minister of Defence and recommendations from the Commander of Zimbabwe Defence Forces, to reward deserving officers by promoting them to higher ranks.
Air Marshal Nzvede assumes command of the AFZ, succeeding Air Marshal Elson Moyo, who has been retired.
Presiding over the investiture ceremony, Commander Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) General Philip Valerio Sibanda, emphasized the weight of responsibility that accompanies the promotion.
General Sibanda conveyed his congratulations to the new Air Marshal, acknowledging the attributes that led to this advancement. He said:

On behalf of the men and women of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, I take this opportunity to extend our congratulations to the new Air Marshal. This promotion comes due to your hard work, loyalty, patriotism, and good working ethics in you.

The timing of this leadership change coincided with an unsettling incident on 01 March 2024 — an email was sent by one John Doe warning of an explosive device at Victoria Falls International Airport.
As a result, President Mnangagwa’s plane altered its course mid-air, returning to Harare instead of proceeding to Victoria Falls.
Subsequently, Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Martin Rushwaya, announced Air Marshal Moyo’s retirement and the appointment of Air Vice Marshal Nzvede as the new Commander of the Airforce of Zimbabwe.

Air Vice Marshal Nzvede Officially Assumes Command Of Airforce Of Zimbabwe

Four Airforce of Zimbabwe (AFZ) officers are undergoing training on military air traffic control at the South African Air Force (SAAF) Command and Control School at Air Force Base Hoedspruit.
According to a report by <a href="https://www.defenceweb.co.za/aerospace/aerospace-aerospace/saaf-hosting-zimbabwean-students/">defenceWeb</a>, the four AFZ officers are Officer Cadet (OC) Allen Thabiso Moyo, Officer Cadet Benjamin Dambakushamba, Officer Cadet Talent Macharaga, and Officer Cadet Kudakwashe Goba.
The four joined the course at the beginning of this year. Said Dambakushamba:

South Africa and Zimbabwe have enjoyed good relations from way back, which is why I have already adapted to the environment keeping in mind that South Africa and Zimbabwe are very close neighbours who always boldly display the splendour of this continent through exchange programmes like these.
We miss cooked meals, but we enjoy the learning process that is taking place, we are motivated and we will definitely go home with a lot that will make us sought-after Air Traffic Controllers.
I wish to express my respect to the Air Force for making this opportunity so fulfilling for these students; this school’s reputation speaks for itself and it is definitely sublime.
Most of its graduates are enjoying glorious careers wherever they are in the world and are destined for greatness.

The course is expected to conclude around September 2023. The modules concluded so far are Visual Aircraft Recognition, Aircraft Instruments and Navigation Aids and Basic Meteorology.

Airforce Of Zimbabwe Officers Undergo Training In South Africa

President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Emmerson_Mnangagwa">Emmerson Mnangagwa</a> Monday promoted Air Force of Zimbabwe senior officer Winnie Mandeya to the rank of Air Vice Marshal (AVM) becoming the first woman to reach equivalent to a Major General in land forces.
As she assumed her new role, Mandeya committed herself to work for the well-being of Zimbabweans, especially on issues affecting women, their empowerment and inclusion, according to The Herald.
She was promoted along with fellow Air Commodore Patrick Moyo. The promotions are effective from July 1 and August 1 respectively.
Commander Zimbabwe Defence Forces, General <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Philip_Valerio_Sibanda">Philip Valerio Sibanda</a> handed over the new insignia of her new rank AVM Mandeya.
The promotions were made in terms of the Defence Act, which gives the President as Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces the right, when acting on the advice of the Defence Minister who acts on the advice of a force commander, to promote or temporarily appoint an officer to a higher rank.
Congratulating the promoted air vice marshals, General Sibanda said the elevation demonstrated the trust that the President had in the officers. He said:

The elevation means a higher responsibility that demands good judgment, discipline, loyalty and hard work.
</blockquote>
AVM Mandeya called for more inclusion of women in all sectors of life. She said:
<blockquote>
It should be our combined endeavour to sustain the growth of women’s involvement and ensure that it is socially inclusive. We must ensure that every section of our society, particularly the disadvantaged, are equal partners in, and beneficiaries of the development process.
I am fully aware of the great responsibilities placed on my humble shoulders.

She pledged to “continue to do the best” as she has “done before.”

President Mnangagwa Promotes First Female To Air Vice Marshal

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s presidential helicopter was forced into an emergency landing over 60 kilometres southwest of Harare on Sunday afternoon due to a technical failure.
Security sources told The NewsHawks the crash landing incident happened on Sunday around 4 pm in the Sandringham area, Matsvaire village, in Chegutu district when Mnangagwa was coming from his Kwekwe farm.
The sources said Mnangagwa was rattled and terrified by the incident which forced him into a scary emergency while on his way back to Harare. Said a source:

The incident happened in Sandringham. A probe into what happened to the President’s chopper is currently underway. Whenever the President is not flying the chopper, the helicopter will be parked at Manyame Air Base in Harare and it’s usually flown when he visits his Sherwood farm or when he wants to travel to remote areas.
From Manyame, it usually picks him up from his state residence, but sometimes it lands at Morris Depot grounds where it would be under police guard. While many people think that he has bought a new chopper, it’s not true, the helicopter which was forced to make an emergency landing is an old one which was resprayed.
Initially, it had been agreed after the incident that he should be picked up to complete the journey by road, but while the motorcade was on its way, a second helicopter was sent to fly him back home.

Sources said investigations underway on the incident will involve the Air Force, intelligence services, Presidential Guard and aviation experts.
Earlier this month, he was forced to make a last-minute flight postponement to Mutare due to bad weather.
Sources said following the Sunday incident, strict protocols in maintaining the President’s chopper are expected to be enforced after the probe is concluded.
The presidential spokesman, George Charamba said he was not aware of the incident.
In April this year, three Air Force officers died when their helicopter crashed in Arcturus near Harare.

The president of the opposition MDC Alliance, Nelson Chamisa has sent condolences to the families of the Friday helicopter crash that happened in Goromonzi.
The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Air_Force_of_Zimbabwe">Airforce of Zimbabwe</a> helicopter crashed on a house<a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/full-text-airforce-of-zimbabwe-speak-on-helicopter-crash/"> at Plot 2 of Gardner Road, Ward 16 in Goromonzi, Mashonaland East,</a> killing four people killed four people – two AFZ pilots, Flight- Lieutenant Annita Mapiye who is Zimbabwe’s first female helicopter fighter pilot and Wing Commander Tinashe Thomas Mapiye, an AFZ technician Flight Sergeant Chikamhi, and 18-month-old toddler – Jade Fenyere who was sleeping in the house and injured two more people.
Chamisa posted on Twitter expressing condolences to the bereaved families. He said:

The cause of the crash is not yet known with authorities saying investigations are already underway.

Chamisa Consoles Families Of Helicopter Crash Victims

MDC Alliance Secretary-General, Chalton Hwende has said the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Air_Force_of_Zimbabwe">Airforce of Zimbabwe</a> helicopter crash <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/full-text-airforce-of-zimbabwe-speak-on-helicopter-crash/">that happened at Plot 2 of Gardner Road, Ward 16 in Goromonzi, Mashonaland East could have been avoided.</a>
The helicopter Agusta Bell 412 (AB 412) helicopter crashed into a house on Friday, caught fire, killed four people – two AFZ pilots, Flight- Lieutenant Annita Mapiye who is Zimbabwe’s first female helicopter fighter pilot and Wing Commander Tinashe Thomas Manyowa, an AFZ technician Flight Sergeant Chikamhi, and 18-month-old toddler – Jade Fenyere who was sleeping in the house and injured two more people.
Two people – a toddler and her mother who were injured, taken to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals and later transferred to Trauma Centre in Borrowdale for treatment, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/victims-of-military-helicopter-crash-named/">were reportedly in a stable condition Friday night.</a>
Hwende said the helicopter crash could have been avoided if the ZANU PF government had invested in new aircraft. He said:
<blockquote>The death of Air Force of Zimbabwe cadres in yesterday’s helicopter crush is unfortunate. But the accident could have been avoided if the ZANU PF government had invested in new aircraft instead of relying on ramshackle helicopters acquired by the colonial regime 50 years ago.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, the government has said investigations are underway to establish the cause of the crash.
The crash comes barely days after reports that <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/mnangagwa-takes-delivery-of-an-us18m-helicopter/">President Emmerson Mnangagwa had bought an US$18 million</a> helicopter he allegedly intends to use mainly for the 2023 electoral campaign.
The reports infuriated some who argued that the incumbent leadership was getting its priorities wrong.

An Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) Agusta Bell 412 (AB 412) helicopter from Number 8 Sqn at <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Manyame_Air_Base">Manyame Air Force Base (Manyame AFB)</a> crashed in the Hukuru Area in Acturus on 23 April 2021. The helicopter crashed into a house and sadly claimed the lives of two pilots and a technician as well as a child on the ground while another young girl and the mother had burn injuries and were taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital.
The helicopter took off from Manyame AFB with two pilots and one aircraft technician on board on a General Handling training sortie in the Seke-Domboshava Training Area. When contact could not be established with the aircraft the Base activated a Search and Rescue operation. As a result of the Search and Rescue effort, the aircraft wreckage was identified.
In his message after the accident, Commander Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ), <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Elson_Moyo">Air Marshal Elson Moyo</a>, said a dark cloud had engulfed the AFZ after news of the helicopter accident that claimed the lives of three aircrew and a civilian on the ground. ”
We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives after the unfortunate accident. Our hearts and prayers are with the families of the deceased and those injured after the accident,” he said.
The names of the deceased will be released after their next of kin have been informed. The cause of the accident will be established after an aircraft accident investigation and funeral arrangements for the deceased will be announced in due course.

Several organisations have reportedly chipped in to help the City of Harare to extinguish a fire at Pomona dumpsite that was first seen close to a week ago on Friday, The Herald reports.
These are some of the organisations and individuals that have helped the city fathers extinguish the infamous fire:

<li>Others also provided front end loaders and tippers.</li>
<li>Mashwede Holdings mobilised a tipper truck and 100 litres of diesel</li>

A Mt Pleasant resident Hellen Davidson who spoke to the publication said the initiative received so much support.

EMA reportedly toured the area with journalists yesterday and EMA’s provincial environmental manager for Harare Metropolitan Province, Mr Robson Mavondo blamed the city for the fire and said they had poor waste management structures.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF), has promoted three Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) Group Captains to the rank of Air Commodore, 17 Wing Commanders to Group Captain and 31 Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) Majors to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.
The promotions which were made under the Defence Act are with effect from December 5.
Speaking during the investiture of the Air Force officers, AFZ Commander Air Marshal Elson Moyo challenged the officers to continue working hard and maintain guiding principles and values. He said:
<blockquote>Your promotion today is a true reflection of the confidence that the ZDF has in your ability to perform at a higher level.
This is a reward for your hard work and steadfastness towards serving our country, Zimbabwe. This translates to more workload and greater responsibility.</blockquote>
Brigadier-General Milton Bvudzijena who conferred the ranks to the newly promoted Lieutenant-Colonels at Army Headquarters said that officers had a duty to complement government efforts in addressing the socio-economic crisis in the country.

ED Promotes 51 Zimbabwe Defence Forces Officers

Airforce of Zimbabwe Commander, Air Marshal Elson Moyo admonished graduands of a Basic Officers’ Course to maintain high standards of professional discipline. Air Marshal Moyo said this while officiating at the graduation ceremony of the six Airforce officers who graduated having undergone the training in 2018. He said:
<blockquote>Discipline is the bedrock from which the Airforce of Zimbabwe has over the years scored numerous successes in military and humanitarian assistance and operations.
As a result, the Zimbabwe Defence Forces are known worldwide for our standards of military discipline as evidenced in operations that were carried out successfully in Mozambique, Angola, Somalia, DRC among other operations.
… We will not hesitate to take strict action on those who stray from the military rules and regulations.</blockquote>
The commander’s call comes when there has been an outcry over the army’s brutality in dealing with suspected violent protestors. There are reports of <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zimbabwe-soldier-admits-he-committed-rape-says-they-broke-mdc-supporters-bones-report/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">soldiers raping women and deliberately breaking the legs of MDC activists.</a> The army has blamed the incidents on ‘rouge’ soldiers and deserters.

"We Are Not Recruiting": Air Force Of Zimbabwe Disowns Social Media Advert

Chinhoyi youths accused Airforce of Zimbabwe instructors of nepotism after they were turned away after failing to pass the rigorous recruitment exercise.
Only 27 out of the 800 youths between 18-22 years of age were selected after running 10km within 45 minutes, medical check-ups and five levels of an aptitude test, among others. Those who had not been selected questioned the selection criteria used after some of their colleagues who had allegedly failed, ended up among the selected.
The youths accused the recruitment offficers of nepotism, with one Obriel Musekiwa, who came second in the 10km run by clocking the distance in 38 minutes saying,
<blockquote>I beat most of those guys. I was second in 38 minutes. I think those selected are sons and daughters of senior members in the uniformed forces. Fairness is paramount if we are to progress as a nation.</blockquote>
However  recruiting officer with the Air Force of Zimbabwe, who refused to be identified, said coming first in the 10km run was not a confirmation one would get the place.
