The government has enlisted the services of a consultant to oversee the re-merger of the national airline, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Air_Zimbabwe/">Air Zimbabwe</a>, and the National Handling Services (NHS) in a bid to enhance efficiency at the country’s airports.
According to <a href="https://zbcnews.co.zw/2023/06/27/govt-working-to-remerge-of-air-zimbabwe-and-nhs/">ZBC News</a>, the move is aimed at ensuring the sustainability of service provision in a competitive industry. The Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Mike Madiro, has revealed that discussions on the re-merger have been ongoing, and the policy position is now work in progress. He said:

Issues to do with a re-merger between NHS and Air Zimbabwe have been topical and the fact that sustainability of service provision has to be guaranteed given the competitive nature of the industry. This is a policy position which is now work in progress.
</blockquote>
NHS, a state enterprise that offers aviation ground services at the country’s airports, held its annual general meeting in Harare on Tuesday, where the need for retooling and capacitation of the parastatal was highlighted in line with the government’s thrust of revamping the country’s aviation facilities. The government has recently completed the expansion of the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, which is expected to increase the airport’s handling capacity of passenger and cargo volumes.
The NHS CEO, Mr Godknows Marawanyika, has revealed that the parastatal is focusing on recapitalisation in its five-year plan, which involves bringing new state-of-the-art equipment to complement the government’s efforts in refurbishing and building new aviation facilities. He said:

We are focusing on recapitalisation on our five-year plan where we are concentrating on bringing new state-of-the-art equipment to complement what the government is doing in refurbishing and building new aviation facilities.
</blockquote>
The general manager of Zimbabwe Dryport, Mr Theodore Chinyanga, reported the facility is not operating at full capacity due to a lack of equipment, which requires about US$2 million. He said they have handled 385 cars and 1,553 bond entries since they started operations in 2019. The facility needs equipment such as a reach stacker, side loader, refrigerated facilities, and a warehouse to operate at full capacity. The dry port facility enables the country to increase its business and trade opportunities by importing and exporting directly to Europe and West Africa using ocean cargo services.

Government Moves To Re-merger Air Zimbabwe And The National Handling Services

The Government has appointed Air Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd board member Edmund Murambiwa Makona as the acting chief executive officer of the national airliner with immediate effect.
Makona takes over from Tafadzwa Zaza who has been the Air Zimbabwe acting chief executive officer for the past 16 months.
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development confirmed the development in a statement that reads in part:
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development and Air Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd board wish to advise members of the public and all stakeholders in the aviation sector, that the Board of Air Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd has appointed Mr. Edmund Murambiwa Makona as acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the national airline with effect from 12 April 2023.
Mr. Makona has been appointed in terms of Section 14 (4) (b) of the Public Entities Corporate Governance Act [Chapter 10:31] for the next six months, the period within which the board projects to have recruited a substantive CEO.
He has taken over from Mr. Tafadzwa Zaza who has been the acting CEO for the past 16 months and 21 days.
The board is grateful to Mr. Zaza for his service to the airline during his tenure as the Acting CEO.
The Ministry said Makona is an aviation expert who has worked in the aviation industry for more than three decades. Reads the statement:

He is a top-level aviation Executive with more than three decades of experience. Further, he is an international aviation consultant with an aeronautical engineering background, type rated licensed engineer, aviation quality, safety and security expert and a trainer for aircraft engineers and pilots ground school.
The board wishes to tap into his vast experience as a former CEO of Air Zimbabwe, who successfully relaunched the Airline in 2013.
With an aviation career spanning over 38 years, he also served as President of the African Airlines (AFRAA) and as an independent consultant for IATA on various African airline missions.
We look forward to unlocking value from his expertise as he complements the Board in devising and executing strategies and leading team efforts that will produce significant business turnaround at Air Zimbabwe during his six-month stint.

Makona has been tasked with spearheading Air Zimbabwe’s recovery process, through the implementation of the Air Zimbabwe six-year strategic turnaround plan.
Air Zimbabwe has a six-year strategic turnaround plan (STP) which includes the procurement and deployment of appropriate equipment for the current and planned route network, as well as a fleet commonality for the containment of maintenance and operational costs.
