The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education says it will come up with a policy to limit the number of subjects that are written by Advanced Level candidates to four.
This comes after parents and guardians, among other stakeholders, expressed misgivings over the high grades that were scored by A Level candidates in the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) 2022 exams.
Some candidates sat for as many as ten subjects, against the standard three subjects, while high grades were recorded of up to 50 points.
In a Ministerial statement on the management of the leakages of some Ordinary Level examination question papers presented in the National Assembly last Wednesday, the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Evelyn Ndlovu, said:
<blockquote>
At A level, how can people believe in people who attain 20 points? I think we need to come up with a policy to limit the number of subjects that are written by our children.
We really need to come up with a policy as a Ministry that, at most, a child should register for four subjects at A level.
The issue of writing 10 subjects and all why? There is confusion, so I think; we will come up with a policy so that at least our children can write four subjects.
After all, our universities require only three subjects – Yes, they need three.
So, the maximum, we will recommend, as a Ministry, that we come up with a policy where we reduce the number of A level subjects.

At Advanced Level, each A passing grade carries five points at A level, with a B carrying four points and a C carrying three points, D (two points) and E (one point), with grades not carrying points being Ordinary (O) and Fail (F).

Number Of Subjects At Advanced Level Should Be Limited To Four - Minister Ndlovu

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (MOPSE) has said this year’s Lower-Six learners will start their A-Level classes on Monday 13 February 2023 after the release of O-Level results early this week.
Authorities say the short gap between the release of the O-Level results and the start of A-Level is a move meant to maximise teaching time.
MOPSE spokesperson, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Taungana_Ndoro">Mr Taungana Ndoro</a> told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/lower-six-classes-set-to-start-monday/">The Herald</a>:
<blockquote>
We don’t want our learners idling around aimlessly and falling victim to social ills like an initiation into drug abuse. In view of that realisation, we have decided that they resume their studies this coming Monday.
You will also realise that in the past year or so our school calendar has been disrupted by COVID-19 mitigatory measures, particularly as it relates to face-to-face learning, so we are opting for an immediate class resumption so as to maximise learning.
We do not expect any disruptions on reopening and in the learning process. Schools must take note that since this group is coming in to join others who started on January 9, their fees will be charged on a pro-rata basis (in proportion).
</blockquote>
Ndoro reminded teachers that paid-for extra lessons are illegal and those found doing it will be charged with criminal abuse of office.
He said in cases where teachers feel the need for extended tutorials, they can have these but the extra time should include the whole class and should be at no extra cost.
Mr Ndoro said as parents and guardians scout for new schools for their children, they should ignore illegal schools as the quality of education at these institutions cannot be regulated or monitored.

Lower-Six Learners Will Start Their A-Level Classes On Monday 13 February 2023

The Deputy Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Edgar Moyo said that there is no law that says Advanced Level learners should do a certain number of subjects.
An A’ Level candidate is expected to write three subjects and attain a minimum of two “E’s”, that is, two points in two different subjects to be considered to have passed.
But Moyo said that is just a custom and practice and not based on any law. He said:
<blockquote>
The more subjects you learn the greater conceptualisation of the areas that you will be learning.
For example, if someone is doing Pure Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Statistics, the concepts build into each other and help you in other subjects.
The requirement of two or three A’ Level passes at university is just a custom and practice. There is no law that stipulates that.
It emanated from that a child with three subjects which are related, he/she can find a career.
However, the challenge of doing more subjects might be that there will be more workload for the student especially if they are not really gifted and it also becomes a burden to the parents in terms of financing.

The issue has been topical in recent weeks after a former Ruya Adventist Secondary School student Tadiwanashe Mavetera scored 10As in the November 2022 ZIMSEC A’ Level examination.
Moyo said they have noted the debate and concerns being raised by the public and as the Ministry of Education, they will discuss the matter. He said:

We have not really sat down to discuss this issue as a Ministry but it is something that we are just noting.
The public has been raising this issue of high grades so at some point we might need to sit down and look at it probably to come up with a policy because policies come up because of what will be obtaining on the ground.
At the moment what I can say is that we are noting the concerns.

Three Subjects At A' Level Is Just Custom, Not Law - Deputy Minister Moyo

“Changamire Dombo —The Legend”, a book written by a Zimbabwean author based in Germany has been adopted into the country’s Advanced Level English Literature set books.
The book is also recommended for every Zimbabwean pupil from primary to tertiary level and for social reading too.
The author of the book, Phillip Gwatidzo, said that “Changamire Dombo — The Legend” takes a person back into the 1600s and makes them feel like they were physically present in the timeline, serving the King’s first hand. He said:
<blockquote>
After the book was published, I met Dr Arthur Makanda, Director of Curriculum Development Unit (CDU) in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, and to this day I am inspired by the work ethos and the professionalism the man conducted in the evaluation process.
As a diasporan, social media funnels you to being a skeptic of engaging public office, but I have to commend the level of professionalism I encountered with the Ministry regardless of whether my material had made the cut or not.
The selection of the book is an honour of the highest magnitude, a dream that was followed by hard work to see it come true.
It is a passion project that I am excited to share with the students. As a proud, patriotic Zimbabwean and African, it was always had the desire to get to share what I feel inside for my country and continent with the rest of the world and this book became that platform.

Gwatidzo said he has reached a publishing agreement with Consultus Publishing Services which is the distributor of the book in the country. He added:

This allows me to focus on phase 2 of the project which is to dramatise the book for screenplay. The intent of phase 2 is to make a global blockbuster of “Changamire Dombo — The Legend” that will screen worldwide.
It is my wish and intent to reach agreements with production companies that will shoot the movie in Zimbabwe, using the original sites such as Great Zimbabwe, Mosi Oa Tunya, Mana Pools, and Gonarezhou.
The majority of the workforce on set to be Zimbabwean, not only showcasing our beautiful country in the process but also creating a workforce during the filming process and an opportunity to showcase local talent to the world.

German-based Zimbabwean Author’s Book Included In A' Level Set Books

A 22-year-old Law student at the University of Zimbabwe decided to retake Advanced Level examinations in order to better understand the challenges faced by learners since the introduction of the new curriculum by becoming one of them.
Mboneni Ngwenya finished high school in 2017 and got enrolled into UZ law school in 2018.
He recently got his second A level results which he passed with 25 points in six subjects – Ndebele, History, Family and Religious Studies, Geography, Biology and Chemistry. Said Ngwenya:

I have always been interested in understanding what young people go through, especially those still in school and recently, many have been complaining and seemed to be facing hardships in keeping up with the new curriculum.
Now I have better knowledge of how high school feels like nowadays and it will be easier for me to suggest ways to ease the pressure on the students and also make sure the pass rate keeps improving as well.
</blockquote>
Meanwhile, parents and guardians under the Our Zimbabwe campaign recently petitioned Parliament to have the new curriculum suspended, saying it is expensive and its implementation was rushed.
Parents are opposed to the Continuous Assessment Learning Activity (CALA), and projects where learners are asked to do many projects per term which are deemed too expensive.

How To Check ZIMSEC A’ Level Results Online

The government has released guidelines for the selection of learners into A’ Level this year. Those with at least 5 subjects passed with a grade ‘C’ or better should be eligible for selection, said Acting Secretary for Primary and Secondary Education Peter Muzawazi.
The government is worried that schools focus too much on students with “A” grade passes in and that these students tend to flock to the same combinations.
Said Muzawazi:
<blockquote>The ministry is informing all heads of schools, all parents and stakeholders that Lower Sixth Form classes begin on Monday, 4 February 2019. Learners who pass in five learning areas are eligible for selection.
Heads of schools are expected to ensure that all learning areas are well subscribed and this is possible if heads do not insist on taking only learners with many A grade passes because learners with such grades tend to want the same learning combinations.
Every A-Level school has responsibility over its own learners as well as learners from other schools. All A- Level classes are expected to be viable. A viable A-Level class should have about 25 learners. Such enrolment figures warrant Sixth Form allowances for the teachers taking the A- Level classes</blockquote>

Those With 5 Subjects With At Least 'C' Should Be Selected For A Level, Says Government

Speaking during his tour of universities and polytechnics at Bulawayo Polytechnic, Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development Minister, Professor Amon Murwira yesterday said Government is suspending paying fees for Advanced level Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics students.
He said the funds from the the Zimbabwe Manpower Development Fund (Zimdef) which were being used to pay fees for STEM students will now be used for manpower development by supporting students in institutions of higher learning. Said Murwira:
<blockquote>We are no longer going to sponsor any more students, except the ones who are already on the roll. The ones that we already started paying for will have their fees paid until they complete. We are not going to take a second batch which means we are liberating the money. Why are we liberating it? For apprenticeships, that’s what we are trying to do.</blockquote>
He said a there is a forensic audit at Zimdef to ascertain the usage of funds.

Govt Suspends Jonathan Moyo's STEM Scholarship Programme

Cambridge has released the International AS and A Level and Cambridge Pre-U results. The results were released on Wednesday 10 January 2018.
The O Level results are due to be released on 17 January 2018. Students can log in to access the results online with the British Council having sent the log in details to candidates via email. Alternatively school students can collect their results at school while private candidates will have to wait for the results to be posted to their home address.

Cambridge A Level 2017 Results Out

According to an analysis by <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_School_Examinations_Council">Zimsec</a>, female candidates scored a 91,6 percent pass rate while their male counterparts managed 86,4 percent. In 2015, girls were in the lead, scoring a 90,5 percent pass rate against the boys’ 85,4 percent. Zimsec board chairperson Professor <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Levi_Nyagura">Levi Nyagura</a> said there were more male candidates than females in last year’s examinations.
Nyagura revealed that the number of female candidates who sat for November 2016 A-level examinations was 14 610 while 14 489 wrote two or more subjects and 13 266 passed with two or more subjects. The number of male candidates who sat for the same examinations was 18 790, which is 4 180 more than their female counterparts. A total of 18 650 male school candidates wrote two or more subjects and 16 117 passed with two or more subjects. Prof Nyagura said candidature had increased in 2016 compared to 2015.
According to statistics, 85,1 percent of female school candidates passed one subject, while their male counterparts managed 72,9 percent. On private candidates, females scored a 47,4 percent, while their male counterparts managed 53,2 percent. 73,3 percent of female school candidates passed two subjects, while males managed 66,7 percent. Female private candidates scored 27,1 percent, while male candidates managed 34,3 percent. On candidates who passed three subjects, female school candidates registered a 71,78 percent pass rate compared to their male counterparts who settled for 66,3 percent.

Zimsec releases statistics for November 2016 A Level exams, says girls passed more than boys

Speaking during the celebrations to mark the release of the results held at the University of Zimbabwe in Harare yesterday, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Dr Lazarus Dokora, announced that the November 2016 Zimbabwe School Examinations Council Advanced Level results are out and the 41 549 candidates may collect them from Monday.
 
In 2015, the number of candidates who obtained a Grade E or better in one or more subjects was 38 873. This gives a percentage of 93.3 percent, while in 2016, the number of candidates who obtained Grade E or better in one or more subjects was 38 924. This translates to a 93,7 percent pass rate.
