Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has announced that her government will introduce free higher education at state universities and technical colleges from next year.
Nandi-Ndaitwah, who was sworn in as Namibia’s first female leader last month, made the announcement while delivering her State of the Nation (SONA) speech to Parliament on Thursday, 24 April. She said:

I am pleased to announce that from the next academic year, commencing 2026, tertiary education will become 100% subsidised by the government.
</blockquote>
Namibia already provides free education in public primary and secondary schools, although parents still typically need to pay for school uniforms, stationery, books, and hostel fees.
The new policy will remove tuition and registration fees at universities and colleges. There have been calls for years to have all levels of education subsidised by the government in the country, which has a population of around 3 million people.
The President said the policy aims to improve opportunities for young people, particularly in the face of youth unemployment and poverty. Official figures show that around 2.1 million Namibians are under the age of 35.
Two of Namibia’s seven universities are government-run and will offer free education under the new policy.
All of the country’s seven vocational training centres are also government-run and will no longer charge tuition fees.

General Fannie Masemola confirms a shooting incident involving the Deputy President’s convoy. Following the incident, an extensive investigation was conducted and still underway with the ballistics report already concluded.
General Fannie Masemola confirms the reinforcement of security detail to both principals and has also expressed gratitude with the manner in which members of the Presidential Protection Service (PPS) safeguard and handle the safety of both principals.
Members of the PPS who are assigned to both the President and the Deputy President are trained to a high level of skill and possess the necessary expertise and capabilities to avert any risk and threat.
The resources assigned to safeguard the executive are also adequate and designed to prevent any direct and imminent threat on their lives.

The alleged shooting, which reportedly took place on 30 March, was not disclosed to the public until Deputy President Paul Mashatile referenced the incident during a visit to the KwaSizabantu Mission in Kranskop, KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday.
Before delivering an address at the Easter service, Mashatile recounted the event, stating that his vehicle had been struck by what he initially assumed were stones while travelling home from an ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Boksburg, Gauteng. Said Mashatile:

South African police are protecting President Ramaphosa and Deputy President Mashatile more after someone tried to hurt Mashatile. Shots were fired at his convoy as he returned from a meeting. The police are investigating the incident. Mashatile thought his car was hit by stones, but it was bullets. The police say they have enough resources to keep the leaders safe. The shooting happened on March 30 but was only made public later. Mashatile talked about it during a visit. He said the bulletproof windshield was damaged, so they are investigating.

SA: Security Tightened For Ramaphosa And Mashatile After Alleged Assassination Attempt

Josh Sullivan, an American pastor who was kidnapped by armed robbers during a church service in Motherwell, Eastern Cape, South Africa, on Thursday last week, has been rescued.
According to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, known as the Hawks, 45-year-old Sullivan was found at a safe house in KwaMagxaki, Gqeberha, on Tuesday night.
Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Avele Fumba said the rescue was the result of an intelligence-driven operation carried out on Tuesday. Said Fumba:

He added that miraculously unharmed, the pastor was assessed by medical personnel at the scene and is currently in excellent condition.

Gabon’s interim leader, General Brice Oligui Nguema, who seized power in a 2023 coup that ended over five decades of Bongo family rule, has been elected president with more than 90% of the vote, according to provisional results announced by the interior ministry.
Oligui Nguema, 50, defeated seven challengers, including former Prime Minister Alain Claude Bilie-By-Nze, who garnered just over 3% in the April 12 vote.
The Interior Ministry reported a turnout of 87.2% among approximately 920,000 registered voters, including more than 28,000 overseas.
Critics had warned that a newly adopted constitution and electoral code favoured Oligui Nguema, while key opposition figures were barred from the race.
His victory cements his grip on power nearly two years after toppling President Ali Bongo, whose family had ruled Gabon since 1967.
Interior Minister Hermann Immongault said Oligui won 575,222 votes, securing a seven-year mandate.
His closest rivals included figures from the former ruling Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), such as Stéphane Germain Iloko and Alain Simplice Boungouères.
The election, Gabon’s first since the 2023 coup, was widely seen as a turning point for the resource-rich but impoverished Central African nation.
Despite vast oil and timber reserves, around 35% of Gabon’s 2.3 million people live on less than $2 a day.
Observers from civil society groups said the election ran smoothly in most polling stations. The Gabonese Civil Society Organisations Observation Mission reported that 94.8% of polling stations operated under satisfactory conditions, with 98.6% rated transparent.
However, irregularities were reported. Some polling stations opened late, and voters were sometimes unable to locate their assigned locations.
Bilie-By-Nze raised concerns about unmarked ballots not being securely stored, warning of possible vote tampering. He also alleged Oligui misused state resources for his campaign, a claim the government denies.
Despite mixed reviews of the military’s performance since the coup, Oligui remains popular among citizens eager to move past dynastic rule.
The former Republican Guard commander has promised to fight corruption and rebuild institutions.

Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema has warned ministers against dozing off during meetings, attributing their lack of attentiveness to indulgence and a lack of self-control.
During a swearing-in ceremony for a new minister, President Hichilema said such indulgence could compromise state secrets and delay service delivery to the public. He said:

Speaking on Monday while welcoming the newly appointed Local Government Minister Gift Sialubalo, Hichilema said he had now gone public with his concerns about cabinet members after expressing them privately “over and over.”

South African police shot dead one suspect and arrested five others following a shootout in Westdene, Sophiatown, on Monday, March 24, 2025.
Of the five arrested, two are in the hospital under police guard after sustaining injuries during the shootout.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed the incident, saying the suspects, believed to be involved in several robberies at churches and places of worship, exchanged gunfire with law enforcement officers. The statement reads:

The suspects are believed to be involved in a number of incidents where churches and places of worship were robbed.
 They were found in possession of unlicensed firearms and music instruments that they allegedly stole from a church in Florida.
Police crime intelligence received information about the suspects who were committing armed robberies and break-ins at places of worship around Gauteng. The information was that a group was to rob a church in Florida.
Various law enforcement agencies that include South African Police Service Counter Intelligence Head Office, Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Tracking Team, Gauteng Tactical Response Team, Gauteng Anti-Gang Unit, Gauteng Traffic Police Air Wing, CAP Specialised Operations, Tracker Connect and Bad Boyz Security was activated to intercept the suspects.
As they were on a lookout, the team spotted a Toyota Quantum that was said to be used by the suspects driving in Sophiatown. 
The suspects sped off as they were stopped by the police. A chase ensued. During the chase, the suspects started shooting at the law enforcement officers and a shootout ensued. The suspects’ car crashed into a fence.
Five suspects were arrested and one was fatally wounded. Two suspects amongst the five were wounded during the shootout and under police guard in hospital.

The statement further reveals that police recovered three firearms and ammunition from the suspects, along with a music system valued at over R2 million, which was found in the vehicle.
The music system is believed to have been stolen from a church in Florida. Police also seized the Toyota Quantum used in the commission of the crime.
The suspects will undergo profiling, and the firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to determine if they were used in the commission of other crimes.

In South Africa, the police stopped an armed gang targeting churches. One suspect died, five were arrested, and two were injured in a shootout. The gang stole from churches and places of worship using unlicensed firearms. A group of law enforcement agencies worked together to catch the suspects. They recovered stolen music instruments and guns from the suspects. The suspects will be checked for other crimes, and the firearms will be tested. The shootout ended in a car crash, and the suspects are now in police custody.

Ndemupelila Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah was sworn in as Namibia’s first female president on Friday, following her victory in the November 2024 presidential election.
In Namibia, the president-elect typically assumes office in March, three months after the November election. This transition period allows time for administrative preparations, security arrangements, and policy briefings for the incoming president.
At 72 years old, Nandi-Ndaitwah joins a small group of female leaders in Africa, alongside figures like Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, Joyce Banda of Malawi, and Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania. 
Sirleaf, Banda, and Hassan, who were present at Nandi-Ndaitwah’s inauguration, have all served as heads of state.
Nandi-Ndaitwah took the oath to defend and support the constitution in front of leaders from Zimbabwe, South Africa, Zambia, Congo, Botswana, Angola, and Kenya.
She succeeds Nangolo Mbumba, who had served as acting president since February 2024 following the death of President Hage Geingob. Nandi-Ndaitwah had been promoted to vice president after Geingob’s passing.
Nandi-Ndaitwah is the fifth president of Namibia since the country gained independence from Apartheid South Africa in 1990, following a long struggle and a more than 20-year guerilla war against South African forces. She said:

Nandi-Ndaitwah has been a lawmaker since 1990 and served as the country’s foreign minister before being appointed vice president.
Her husband, a retired general, previously commanded Namibia’s armed forces and holds the title of “first gentleman.”
Nandi-Ndaitwah’s inauguration took place a day after Namibia’s Parliament elected its first female speaker.

Rwanda has announced the expulsion of Belgium’s ambassador as tensions between the two countries escalate over allegations concerning their involvement in the conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In a statement released on Monday, 17 March, Rwanda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation confirmed it was severing diplomatic ties with Belgium and giving Belgian diplomats 48 hours to leave the country.
The statement accused Brussels of “using lies and manipulation to foster an unjustified hostile stance against Rwanda.” Reads the statement:

The Government of Rwanda today notified the Government of Belgium of its decision to sever diplomatic relations, effective immediately.
Rwanda’s decision has been taken after careful consideration of several factors, all linked with Belgium’s pitiful attempts to sustain its neocolonial delusions.
Belgium has consistently undermined Rwanda, both well before and during the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in which Belgium has a deep and violent historical role, especially in acting against Rwanda.
Today, Belgium has clearly taken sides in a regional conflict and continues to systematically mobilize against Rwanda in different forums, using lies and manipulation to secure an unjustified hostile opinion of Rwanda, in an attempt to destabilize both Rwanda and the region.
Beyond Belgium’s destructive historical role in fueling the ethnic extremism that resulted in entrenched discrimination and persecution, and ultimately the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, it has also allowed Belgian territory to be used by groups that propagate genocide denial and sustain genocidal ideology.
Today’s decision reflects Rwanda’s commitment to safeguarding our national interests and the dignity of Rwandans, as well as upholding the principles of sovereignty, peace, and mutual respect.
All Belgian diplomats in Rwanda are required to leave the country within 48 hours. In compliance with the Vienna Convention, Rwanda will assure the protection of the premises, property, and archives of the Belgian diplomatic mission in Kigali.

They say Belgium has a history of causing problems in the region, especially during the 1994 genocide. Rwanda wants to protect its people and its reputation. Rwanda Expels Belgium’s Ambassador Following Tensions Over DRC Conflict

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has announced the termination of its troop deployment in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
On 13 March 2025, SADC held a virtual Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government to discuss the escalating security situation in the DRC.
A communiqué issued by the SADC Secretariat after the summit said that troops deployed under the Southern African Development Community Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC) will be withdrawn in phases. Part of the communiqué reads:

Summit terminated the Mandate of SAMIDRC and directed the commencement of a phased withdrawal of SAMIDRC troops from the DRC.
</blockquote>
SAMIDRC is a regional peacekeeping mission deployed by SADC to assist the Congolese government in restoring peace and security in the eastern regions of the DRC.
The mission began in December 2023 in response to the escalating conflict fueled by armed groups, including the M23, which is reportedly supported by Rwanda.
The SAMIDRC mission involves troops from countries such as South Africa, Tanzania, and Malawi, working alongside the Congolese Army to neutralise armed groups and stabilise the region.
The security situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) remains extremely volatile, particularly in the eastern regions. 
The M23 armed group, allegedly backed by Rwanda, has intensified its operations, displacing hundreds of thousands of civilians who are fleeing their homes in search of safety.
The M23 currently controls large swaths of territory in the eastern DRC, including the North Kivu and South Kivu provinces. 
Key cities, including Goma and Bukavu, have fallen under their control, and the group has also set up a parallel administration.

The SADC, a group of African countries, decided to stop sending troops to help keep peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The troops will leave in phases. The mission started in 2023 because of fighting from armed groups like the M23, supported by Rwanda. The situation in the DRC, especially in the east, is still very dangerous. The M23 is controlling parts of the country and making people flee their homes. Now, the SADC troops will start to go back to their own countries.

SADC Terminates Peacekeeping Mission In DRC, Troops To Be Withdrawn In Phases

South African police arrested a 48-year-old foreign national at the Beitbridge Port of Entry on 11 March 2025, for the alleged unlawful possession of explosives valued at over R600,000.
The arrest was confirmed in a statement released by the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (Hawks) on Tuesday. It reads in part:

It is alleged that on 11 March 2025, police stopped a horse and trailer truck that was travelling from Zimbabwe to South Africa at the PoE weighbridge.
They asked a driver to open a trailer so that the search could be conducted. The driver informed the police that he did not have keys for the trailers.
Police forcibly opened the trailer. The search was conducted and they found bags containing items suspected to be explosives.
Police then summoned the Musina-based Bomb Technicians, Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation and Local Criminal Record Central to the scene for assistance.
Upon the arrival of the above-mentioned units, the truck was thoroughly searched. As a result, the team found 16 reels of detonating fuse explosives and 2182 Superpower 90 blasting cartridges explosives. The suspect was arrested.

The suspect, whose nationality was not revealed, was expected to make his first court appearance in the Musina Magistrate Court on 12 March 2025.

South African police caught a foreign man at Beitbridge with explosives worth a lot of money. The man was arrested as he tried to enter South Africa from Zimbabwe. The police found the explosives in bags in the trailer of the truck he was driving. They had to force open the trailer because he didn't have the keys. They found detonating fuse explosives and blasting cartridges. The man was arrested and was going to appear in court the next day. The news was confirmed by the Hawks.

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) will convene a virtual Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government on 13 March 2025 to address the escalating security situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
This summit follows the virtual Extraordinary SADC Organ Troika Summit held just last week, which focused on the growing instability in the region. 
The recent surge in attacks by the M23 rebel group against Congolese security forces, SADC peacekeeping troops, and civilians has further exacerbated the crisis.
According to a communiqué issued by the SADC Secretariat on 11 March, the forthcoming summit will review and deliberate on the recommendations put forth during the Extraordinary SADC Organ Troika Summit. It reads:

SADC To Hold Virtual Extraordinary Summit On DRC Security Crisis

The government of Lesotho has expressed shock after US President Donald Trump referred to the country as a place “nobody has ever heard of” on Tuesday.
Trump made the comment during his first speech since returning to the Oval Office, where he was discussing cuts to what he called wasteful spending.
He mentioned a $8 million expenditure to promote LGBTQI+ rights in Lesotho, adding, “which nobody has ever heard of,” causing some US lawmakers to laugh.
Speaking to the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c0q18x0192yo">BBC,</a> a spokesperson for Lesotho’s foreign affairs department responded by saying that the country has “warm and cordial” relations with the US.
Lesotho also benefits from the US’s African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which offers favourable trade terms to boost economic growth.
Lesotho’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Lejone Mpotjoane, said it was “shocking” for a head of state to refer to another country in such a manner. He said:

To my surprise, ‘the country that nobody has heard of’ is the country where the US has a permanent mission.
Lesotho is a member of the UN and of a number of other international bodies. And the US has an embassy here and [there are] a number of US organisations we’ve accommodated here in Maseru.

Officials have dismissed Trump’s comments as an “off the cuff” and “political statement,” saying they were “uncalled-for” considering the strong relations between the two countries. Foreign affairs spokesperson Kutloano Pheko told the BBC:

Pheko could not confirm Trump’s comments about the funding to LGBTQ organisations, saying that since the money went directly to them, they would be in a better position to comment.
Mpotjoane, on the other hand, confirmed that the country had been impacted by Trump’s sudden decision to pause aid funding to countries around the world.

A memorial service was held on February 28, 2025, at the Independence Stadium, where several dignitaries, including Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, gathered to honour Nujoma’s contributions to the nation and the continent.
Among the mourners were Nujoma’s widow, Theopoldine Nujoma, his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
The burial ceremony saw the presence of numerous African leaders and former heads of state, including President Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe, Thabo Mbeki and Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, Joseph Kabila of the Congo, Ian Khama of Botswana, João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço of Angola, Vice President Philip Mpango of Tanzania, and Prime Minister Samuel Matekane of Lesotho.
Namibia had declared a 21-day mourning period, with flags flown at half-staff. Nujoma’s casket, draped in the Namibian flag and inscribed with the title “Founding President and Father of the Namibian Nation,” was lowered into the mausoleum at Heroes’ Acre, accompanied by a 21-gun salute and a flypast by the Namibian Air Force.
Nujoma was the last of a remarkable generation of African leaders who guided their nations to independence from colonial or apartheid rule.
This cohort included Nelson Mandela of South Africa, Samora Machel of Mozambique, Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, Julius Nyerere of Tanzania, and Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia.
Namibia’s current president, Nangolo Mbumba, described Nujoma as an extraordinary human being, underscoring his profound impact on the nation’s history and identity. Said Mbumba:

About 200 South African soldiers have returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In an interview with SABC News, Pikkie Greeff, the national secretary of the SA National Defence Union (SANDU), said the group included three critically injured soldiers, along with others who were sick, wounded, or dealing with family issues, such as the death of a loved one.
Two pregnant officers were part of the returning group. Greeff said that soldiers cannot remain in an operational area while pregnant, though it was unlikely they were deployed while pregnant due to mandatory medical tests before deployment.
Earlier this month, 14 SA National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers were killed, and many others were injured during clashes between M23 rebel forces and DRC government troops.
Regarding the presence of South African soldiers in M23-controlled areas, Greeff revealed that sensitive negotiations were ongoing. Said Greeff, as quoted by <a href="https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2025-02-26-about-200-soldiers-have-now-returned-from-the-drc-including-two-pregnant-officers/">TimesLive</a>:

SANDU expressed disappointment over the defence department’s lack of clear communication, adding that even the affected soldiers are not regularly updated on the situation or what the authorities are doing on their behalf. Said Greeff:

We understand it’s sensitive and there’s a fine line to be walked. There’s so much uncertainty, especially with families and others asking questions that we feel that the department could have been a lot more expressive, reassuring the public that it is taking the necessary steps.
The department remaining silent while questions mount by the day, it’s not helpful for the trust the public has in the defence force, for the family members and the soldiers.
The soldiers themselves aren’t regularly updated on the situation and what the authorities are doing on their behalf.

The Rwandan government has condemned the United Kingdom’s decision to impose sanctions in response to Kigali’s alleged involvement in the ongoing conflict in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Rwanda is accused of supporting the M23 rebel group, which has seized large parts of eastern DRC, including the cities of Goma and Bukavu, along with valuable mineral resources.
On Tuesday, February 25, the UK announced it would pause some of its bilateral aid to Rwanda and impose diplomatic sanctions on the country.
In a statement, Rwanda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation expressed disappointment, saying it was regrettable that the UK had “clearly chosen a side.”
The ministry argued that it was “unreasonable” to expect Rwanda to compromise its national security and the safety of its people.
Rwanda asserted that these measures would not help resolve the situation in the DRC or contribute to a lasting political solution to the conflict in eastern DRC.
Rwanda denies supporting the M23 group and claims its troops are simply defending against hostile groups based in the DRC.

Consistently not holding the Government of the DRC accountable for repeated attacks on its own citizens, including the ongoing indiscriminate bombing of Banyamulenge villages in South Kivu, encourages the DRC to double down on a military path, prolonging the conflict and the suffering of civilians.
Rwanda will continue to insist on security guarantees, which the DRC and the international community have so far been unwilling or unable to provide.
This perpetual situation of instability seems to benefit, directly or indirectly, a number of those associated with the conflict.
Rwanda is fully committed to working with partner states on the ongoing African-led mediation process and calls on the international community to support this effort, which is the only credible pathway to a negotiated solution.

The United Kingdom announced on Tuesday that it would pause some of its bilateral aid to Rwanda and impose sanctions in response to Rwanda’s involvement in the ongoing conflict in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Rwanda is accused of supporting the M23 rebel group, which has captured large areas of eastern DR Congo, including the cities of Goma and Bukavu, as well as valuable mineral resources.
While Kigali denies supporting the group, it claims that its troops are defending against hostile groups based in the DRC.
The British government said that it would take action until significant progress was made in ending the conflict and withdrawing all Rwandan troops from Congolese territory.
The measures include ending high-level attendance at Rwandan government events, limiting trade promotion with Rwanda, and pausing direct financial aid to Rwanda, except for support for the poorest and most vulnerable, among others.
The UK also said it will coordinate with its partners on potential new sanctions, suspend future defence training for Rwanda, and review export licenses for the Rwanda Defence Force. A UK Government spokesperson said:

The UK is deeply concerned by the situation in eastern DRC. The Foreign Secretary met with President Tshisekedi in Kinshasa and President Kagame in Kigali on 21 and 22 February.
In his meetings, he was clear that there can be no military solution to the conflict. There must be an immediate cessation of hostilities.
The recent offensives by M23 and the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), including the capture of Goma and Bukavu, are an unacceptable violation of DRC’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and a breach of the UN Charter.
The Foreign Secretary urged both leaders to engage meaningfully and in good faith with African-led peace processes to find a lasting political solution.
They must honour all commitments made at the Joint EAC-SADC Summit on 8 February. The UK will continue to discuss with African and other partners what more it can do to support these efforts.
The humanitarian situation in eastern DRC is critical. Close to a million people have been recently displaced in eastern DRC and hundreds of thousands are in desperate need of lifesaving support.
There is a responsibility on all parties to protect the people of eastern DRC who have suffered so much in this conflict.
The Foreign Secretary has been clear that there would be a strong response from the international community in response to the escalating conflict.
In recent weeks, the UK has coordinated closely with international partners, including those from the G7 and the International Contact Group on the Great Lakes, on that response.
We have also used every appropriate opportunity at the United Nations Security Council and the Human Rights Council to call for a resolution to the conflict in Eastern DRC.
During the Foreign Secretary’s visit, he announced an additional package of £14.6 million of humanitarian support to help those in Eastern DRC who are suffering most.
The UK calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities, humanitarian access, respect for international humanitarian law, meaningful engagement with African-led peace processes, and the withdrawal of all Rwanda Defence Forces from Congolese territory.
Until significant progress is made, the UK will take the following measures:
1. Cease high-level attendance at events hosted by the Government of Rwanda.
2. Limit trade promotion activity with Rwanda.
3. Pause direct bilateral financial aid to the Government of Rwanda, excluding support to the poorest and most vulnerable.
4. Coordinate with partners on potential new sanctions designations.
5. Suspend future defence training assistance to Rwanda.
6. Review export licences for the Rwanda Defence Force.
Rwanda may have security concerns but it is unacceptable to resolve these militarily. There can only be a political solution to this conflict. We encourage DRC to engage with M23 as part of an inclusive dialogue.

Britain Imposes Sanctions On Rwanda Over DRC Conflict

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that six suspects involved in a cash-in-transit robbery were shot dead during a shootout with police and other law enforcement agencies in Laudium, Tshwane, on Monday, 24 February 2025, shortly after 5:00 PM.
A seventh suspect, aged 22, was arrested without injuries. Police also recovered five unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
According to SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, Crime Intelligence received information about the suspects heading to Atteridgeville for a robbery.
A team, including the Gauteng Tactical Response Team, Anti-Gang Unit, Traffic Police Airwing, and others, was deployed to track them.
Masondo said the team spotted two vehicles, a BMW X1 and an Audi A4, following a cash-in-transit van. When the suspects noticed the police, they abandoned their plan and tried to flee.
A chase followed, and when the suspects were stopped in Laudium, they fired shots, sparking a shootout.
Six suspects were killed, one was arrested, and others escaped. The Audi A4 was found to have been hijacked in Cleveland, Johannesburg, in December 2024.
Masondo added that initial investigations suggest the suspects were involved in a recent robbery in Atteridgeville, where four security guards were injured, and possibly other robberies in Gauteng and beyond. 
The suspects face charges including conspiracy to commit robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms, and attempted murder.

The police in South Africa stopped a robbery by shooting and killing six suspects. A seventh suspect was arrested. The police found guns and bullets with the suspects. The police were told about the robbery and went to catch the suspects. The suspects were following a van with money but ran away when they saw the police. The police caught them in Laudium and a fight started. The suspects were believed to be involved in other robberies too. They will be charged with crimes like trying to rob, having illegal guns, and trying to hurt others.

South African National Defence Force (SANDF) Lieutenant-General Peter Ntshavheni Maphaha has criticised the country’s politicians for turning the military into a “Mickey Mouse” force due to chronic underfunding.
Speaking at the funeral of Staff Sergeant Ishmael Molahlehi in the Free State over the weekend, Maphaha warned the government that the country’s borders were inadequately protected, leaving many vulnerable. He said (via <a href="https://www.iol.co.za/news/politics/politicians-have-turned-the-sandf-into-a-mickey-mouse-force-top-general-speaks-out-e8ceb25f-c546-4664-ac7d-55215caea119">IOL</a>):

The Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) has announced that all tobacco grown by farmers using their own funds will be sold through the auction system this year.
In Zimbabwe, tobacco is grown under two arrangements: contract farming (where companies fund farmers) and self-financing (where farmers pay for their own production).
This new rule from TIMB is part of the updated guidelines for the 2024/25 tobacco season. It aims to protect farmers from being offered unfair prices for their tobacco. TIMB’s CEO, Emmanuel Matsvaire, said:

Google should pay South African media houses between R300 to R500 million annually over 3-5 years to compensate for lost revenue and address the imbalance in shared value, according to the Competition Commission’s Media and Digital Platforms Market Inquiry (MDPMI) provisional report released on Monday.
The report called for action against search engines like Google and social media platforms like Meta.
The MDPMI was established to investigate potential barriers to competition in the South African media landscape.
Paula Fray, a panel member, explained that while Google generates R800 to R900 million from South African news content, it also undermines around R160 to R200 million in potential value for local media. Fray said:

Our assessment is that the imbalance in the share of total value is around R300 to R500 million annually.

The inquiry found that Google’s algorithm is biased, disadvantaging South African media in favour of international outlets.
It also revealed that most South Africans use social media, such as X, TikTok, Meta, and YouTube, as their primary news source.
The report noted that Meta and X have deprioritised South African posts with links, reducing referral traffic and that South African news outlets are struggling to monetise views on YouTube.
James Hodge, MDPMI chairperson, called for South Africa to impose a 5-10% digital levy on social media and AI companies to compensate local media for lost revenue.
He also stressed the need for search engines to restore referral traffic and adjust algorithms to reduce bias toward foreign platforms.
Hodge recommended that Google share anonymised user data, provide SEO assistance, and pay South African media houses between R300 to R500 million annually over 3-5 years.
He urged Meta to stop deprioritising news on Facebook and increase referral traffic by at least 100%.
Hodge also said there is a need for Meta and X to stop deprioritising news posts with links, and for YouTube to help media outlets, including SABC, better monetise their content by increasing the revenue share to 70% and promoting higher-value direct sales.

A 27-year-old South African man, believed to be a pastor, was bitten by a Black Mamba while praying beside a river in Hazelmere, KwaZulu-Natal, early Saturday morning.
According to <a href="https://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/kwazulu-natal/kwazulu-natal-man-gets-bitten-by-black-mamba-during-prayer-738cb429-b9f0-4ba2-ae3e-87db8235548f">IOL</a>, at around 6:30 AM, a concerned citizen called the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Operations Centre for urgent medical assistance.
The man said that he had been praying when a large black snake bit him on the left foot. He believed it to be a Black Mamba and showed signs of neurotoxic poisoning, including significant swelling at the bite site.
After moving a short distance away from the river, he sought help from security guards, who then contacted RUSA.
Paramedics arrived promptly, treated his symptoms, and transported him to a medical facility for further care.
<h2>What to do if you are bitten by a snake</h2>
The African Snakebite Institute (ASI), says many myths about snakebites, like sucking out the venom or killing the snake to bring to the hospital, should be avoided.
While snakebites can happen while sleeping, most occur when someone accidentally steps on a snake, usually below the knee. ASI offers useful advice on how to handle snake bites:

<li>Keeping calm is crucial. Ensure the snake is no longer in the immediate area, as a second bite can complicate the situation. Panicking can increase your heart rate, causing the venom to spread faster</li>

<li>There is no benefit to cutting the bite or trying to suck out the venom — snake venom cannot be removed this way.</li>
<li>Transport the victim to the nearest hospital as quickly as possible.</li>
<li>Keep the bitten limb still and at or below heart level to slow the spread of venom.</li>
<li>Do not take the snake to the hospital. Doctors don’t need to see the snake that bit you. However, taking a clear photo of the snake may help them identify the type of venom and the symptoms to monitor.</li>

South African Pastor Bitten By A Snake During Prayer

LAM Mozambique Airlines (Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique) has suspended its only intercontinental route to Lisbon and regional flights to Harare, Zimbabwe, and Lusaka, Zambia, citing accumulated losses of US$21.3 million on these routes, reported <a href="https://www.ch-aviation.com/news/150510-mozambiques-lam-drops-lisbon-lusaka-harare-routes">ch-aviation</a>.
At a press conference on February 18, airline spokesperson Alfredo Cossa said that the airline was also reconsidering the future of its Maputo-Cape Town International route. This route is currently operated with a CRJ900 aircraft leased from CemAir, a South African operator.
Cossa revealed that the Lisbon route had been losing US$21 million since it was reinstated in December 2023 after a 13-year break.
The service, which had been operated using a B767-300ER and previously a B777-200ER, both leased from euroAtlantic Airways, has faced delays and cancellations recently, likely due to late lease payments.
The Lisbon route had been relaunched with discounted fares under the temporary management of Fly Modern Ark, which took over the airline’s operations in April 2023. Said Cossa:

The last flight on the Maputo-Lusaka-Harare-Maputo route took place on January 5, while another flight from Maputo to Quelimane and Lusaka was flown on January 12.
Spokesman Alfredo Cossa explained that the decision to cancel these routes was part of the airline’s restructuring plan to improve profitability, as the routes were not financially sustainable. The airline plans to focus on more profitable domestic flights and improve its management.
The Mozambican government is preparing to sell 91% of its shares in LAM to public companies to help strengthen its finances.

Rwandan-backed M23 rebels advanced into the heart of Bukavu, the second-largest city in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Sunday.
Witnesses and the armed group said the rebels encountered minimal resistance from government forces, reported <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/m23-rebels-enter-centre-strategic-city-bukavu-2025-02-16/">Reuters</a>.
The M23 rebels have been aiming to capture Bukavu since taking Goma in late January. If Bukavu’s fall is confirmed, it would mark the group’s most significant gain since reviving a decade-old insurgency in eastern Congo in 2022.
Late on Saturday, the Congolese presidency said the provincial capital remained under the control of its troops and allied forces.
However, early on Sunday, the rebels had advanced into central Bukavu, according to residents and a local official, speaking on condition of anonymity due to security concerns.
M23 spokesperson Willy Ngoma confirmed the group’s presence in Bukavu and posted a photo on X (formerly Twitter) showing fighters in the city’s central Independence Square.

M23 Rebels Advance Into Eastern DRC's Strategic City Of Bukavu

Former Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) spokesperson and Member of Parliament (MP), Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, has officially resigned from the party, South Africa’s fourth-largest political organisation.
Ndlozi confirmed his departure from the EFF in an exclusive interview with SABC News earlier this week. <a href="https://www.iol.co.za/news/politics/mbuyiseni-ndlozi-resigns-as-eff-member-5c751909-6dc0-4ea7-a99c-fdf32174a493">He said</a>:

I am leaving party politics, I believe I have made my contribution in that space.
We don’t live in a one-party state, we are not in camps or a band. Politics in South Africa is a free activity, and party politics are not the only way to contribute to society.
</blockquote>
Ndlozi said he will now venture into academia and surely contribute to civil society.
He also revealed that he made several attempts to the party’s leadership to initiate an investigation into claims that he was planning to leave the EFF and join the MK Party. However, he said he received no response from the leadership.
Ndlozi admitted that his time with the EFF effectively ended at the December convention, which led to his decision to leave politics entirely.
He said his conspicuous absence from the party’s Elective Conference in December, saying he had been suspended for approximately a month and two weeks before the Third National People’s Assembly (NPA) held that month.
Ndlozi explained that the suspension stemmed from his knowledge of then-deputy president Floyd Shivambu’s plans to join the MK Party, as well as suspicions that he was allegedly working with the MKP. He said:

I was suspended about six weeks before the EFF conference and the suspension was unconventional in that it didn’t rely on the code of conduct of the EFF summoned by its constitution.
They claimed that I was part of the infiltration strategy by the MK Party and the second was the fact that I knew about Shivambu’s departure.
In December, party leader Julius Malema refuted all the claims that Ndlozi was suspended.

Ndlozi declared that he had no plans on joining MKP led by former president Jacob Zuma. He said:

I can state categorically now that I never planned to join the MKP I still don’t, I never worked with anyone in the MKP in relation to some conspiracy about my departure. The information they had was based largely on lies.
I did know about the departure of Floyd Shivambu, he told me about his considerations, and I told him to take the leadership into confidence, he did.
The idea that I should have run behind his back and informed other people or the leadership suggests that I’m an informant, a gossiper or a wedge driver, I am none of those.

Ndlozi resigned as an EFF MP after losing his seat on the party’s highest decision-making body, the Central Command Team (CCT).
This followed his exclusion from the party’s elective conference in December, where Malema said that Ndlozi was no longer considered a leader of the EFF.
Despite widespread support for him to become the deputy president of the EFF, Ndlozi was not allowed to stand for a position at the conference.
Malema made it clear that he would not work with people he believed were undermining the revolution.

Mbuyiseni Ndlozi Resigns From EFF

The remains of the 14 South African soldiers who were killed in combat in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in January have finally returned home and are expected to be handed over to their families on Thursday evening.
According to <a href="https://www.defenceweb.co.za/featured/remains-of-14-sandf-soldiers-arrive-home-after-long-journey-from-drc/">defenceWeb</a>, the soldiers were killed by the M23 rebel group during intensified fighting in the Goma region of North Kivu province, DRC, which led to the capture of both Sake and Goma.
The clashes between the M23 and the Congolese armed forces resulted in the deaths of several soldiers between January 23 and 27, as the M23 advanced.
The soldiers were part of the Southern African Development Community Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC), which aims to restore peace, security, and stability in Africa’s second-largest country.
They were also serving with the United Nations peace enforcement mission (MONUSCO) in the DRC.
After multiple delays, including medical processing in Uganda, the remains were transported by road to Entebbe, Uganda.
The UN oversaw the repatriation, and after completing autopsies and other necessary procedures, the bodies were flown to South Africa on Wednesday evening aboard a Tanzanian Air Force Y-8 transport aircraft.
In addition to the 14 SANDF soldiers, the remains of four Malawian and Tanzanian soldiers who were also killed during the M23 advance on Goma were repatriated.
A formal handover ceremony for the remains of the 14 soldiers was set to be held at the Air Force Mobile Deployment Wing (formerly Air Force Base Swartkop) in Centurion at 6 PM, followed by a memorial service at 7 PM.
The M23 rebels have allowed the remains of the deceased SANDF soldiers to leave, though Goma Airport remains closed due to the rebels blocking the runway.
Reports suggest that South Africa is reinforcing its presence in the region, with multiple Il-76 transport aircraft flying from Pretoria. Approximately 800 additional troops are believed to have been deployed.
South Africa has more than 2,000 troops stationed in the DRC, as part of both the Monusco and SAMIDRC missions.
According to the SA National Defence Union (SANDU), most of the fallen soldiers were from infantry battalions, with six infantry soldiers, two paratroopers from 1 Parachute Battalion and 44 Parachute Regiment, as well as a gunner from 4 Artillery Regiment and a private from the Army Support Base (ASB) in Kimberley.
The units that lost personnel include 2 SA Infantry (SAI) Battalion in Zeerust (Rifleman Calvin Moagi), 4 SAI in Middelburg, Mpumalanga (Rifleman Sebatane Chokoe), 7 SAI in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal (Corporal Matome Malesa and Lance Corporal Tseke Molapo), 15 SAI in Thohoyandou (Lance Corporal Metse Raswiswi and Rifleman Derrick Maluleke), 1 Parachute Battalion in Bloemfontein (Rifleman Mokete Mobe), 44 Parachute Regiment in Bloemfontein (Staff Sergeant Molahlehi Molahlehi), 4 Artillery Regiment in Potchefstroom (Lance Bombardier Itumeleng Moreo), and Private Peter Strydom from the Army Support Base (ASB) in Kimberley.
The units of the remaining four deceased soldiers have not yet been disclosed by the SANDF Directorate Corporate Communication. These soldiers are staff sergeants William Cola and Shwahlane Seepe, Corporal Rinae Nemavhulani, and Rifleman Tshidiso Mabele.

South Africa MP, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, has issued an unconditional apology to uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) president Jacob Zuma, following his order for her to do so. This came after Zuma-Sambudla used profanity on social media in a recent post on X (formerly Twitter).
Zuma-Sambudla had criticized MK’s secretary-general, Floyd Shivambu, in a heated post, calling him “the worst thing that has ever happened to the party.”
In her statement on Tuesday, she acknowledged that her actions were inappropriate and admitted that she should have addressed her concerns through the proper internal channels.
She expressed regret for airing her grievances publicly, recognizing that it may have harmed the unity and discipline of the MK party. Added Zuma-Sambudla:

My profanity was not and should not be a reflection of the revolutionary discipline, respect, and solidarity that our organisation, under the esteemed leadership of President Jacob Zuma, upholds.

South Africa’s official opposition party, uMkhonto weSizwe (MK), has demanded an apology from its Member of Parliament (MP), Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, after she insulted the party’s secretary-general, Floyd Shivambu, in a fiery post on X (formerly Twitter).
Sambudla-Zuma, the daughter of former President Jacob Zuma, lashed out at Shivambu, calling him “the worst thing that has ever happened to the party.” She went on to use strong language, boldly declaring she wasn’t afraid of him.
Shivambu, who previously served as the deputy president of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) before joining MK, found himself at the centre of this public dispute.
In response to her comments, MK released a statement on Tuesday morning, condemning Sambudla-Zuma’s actions as a violation of the party’s code of conduct. The statement reads:

The uMkhonto weSizwe Party acknowledges the recent public posts on X made by MK Member, Commander Duduzile Zuma.
These posts are insulting towards the Secretary General of uMkhonto weSizwe Party, constituting a direct violation of the Party’s Disciplinary Code of Conduct.
Such actions are unacceptable, divisive, denigrating, and offensive. They undermine the principles of unity, respect, and discipline that are fundamental to the values of uMkhonto weSizwe Party.
In response, the President of uMkhonto weSizwe Party, President Jacob Zuma, has issued the following directives:
1. Commander Duduzile Zuma must issue an unconditional public apology to the Secretary General, the President, members, supporters of uMkhonto weSizwe, and all the people of South Africa.
2. She must also extend formal apologies to all structures she serves in or leads, including the Southern Caucus of the Pan-African Parliament.
These apologies must be made immediately. Following this, an internal disciplinary process will be initiated in accordance with the uMkhonto weSizwe Party Constitution, Code of Conduct and all relevant prescripts.
Failure to comply with this directive will result in immediate consequences, including the summary termination of Commander Duduzile Zuma’s membership in uMkhonto weSizwe Party and her recall from all Party responsibilities.
uMkhonto weSizwe Party is a movement of the people, grounded in maximum discipline and strict adherence to the Disciplinary Code of Conduct. No member, regardless of position, is above the Constitution of uMkhonto weSizwe.

MK Party Demands An Apology From Jacob Zuma's Daughter For Insulting Shivambu

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said South Africa is being punished by the United States for pursuing its national interests, drawing parallels with Zimbabwe’s own long-standing tensions with Washington.
On Friday, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order cutting aid to South Africa, citing the country’s move to bring a genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and claims of discrimination against white farmers.
Speaking to reporters in Harare on Saturday night after returning from a joint summit of Southern African Development Community (SADC) and East African Community (EAC) leaders in Tanzania, Mnangagwa expressed solidarity with South Africa.
He described Trump’s order as part of a broader pattern of external pressure from what he called “imperialists.” Said Mnangagwa (via <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/sa-being-unjustly-punished-by-the-us">The Sunday Mail</a>):

Both South Africa and Zimbabwe are seasoned boys in the struggle for independence, freedom and that the imperialists can do what they do.
We shall pursue what we think is best for our countries.
South Africa has been punished not for doing anything against any country, but doing what they think is best for themselves. That was the case with Zimbabwe.

On Saturday, Ronald Lamola, South Africa’s Minister for International Relations, said that Trump’s move was based on misinformation. Said Lamola:

We are concerned by what seems to be a campaign of misinformation and propaganda aimed at misrepresenting our great nation.
It is disappointing to observe that such narratives seem to have found favour among decision-makers in the United States of America.

Trump’s order claims that South Africa’s Land Expropriation Act reflects policies that discriminate against white farmers.
However, the Act actually permits land to be taken without compensation only in specific cases, like when the land is abandoned or poses a risk to the public.

President Mnangagwa said USA is punishing South Africa for pursuing its own interests, just like what happened with Zimbabwe. USA cut aid to South Africa because of a genocide case against Israel and discrimination against white farmers. Mnangagwa supports South Africa and calls this pressure from "imperialists." South Africa's Minister for International Relations says USA's move is based on misinformation. USA claims South Africa's Land Expropriation Act discriminates against white farmers, but the law allows land to be taken without payment only in certain situations. Both countries are standing up for their national interests.

Mnangagwa: South Africa Being Punished For Pursuing Its National Interests

A South African father was shot dead at his son’s funeral in Ravensmead, Cape Town, on Saturday morning, reported <a href="https://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/gun-violence-strikes-ravensmead-father-gunned-down-at-sons-funeral-5dd47a05-4992-4ca4-8378-98795fd96fff">IOL</a>.
The son, known as Brampie, was murdered on Wednesday last week. Shortly after the father’s killing, the community members beat the shooter to death. 
A community member said two shooters had approached the 54-year-old man while he stood next to his son’s coffin at Beverly Court. He said:

One of them went back to make sure that the father was dead, and that is when he was caught by the community members.
He was beaten with stanchion steel posts and also pelted with slabs. The community is fed up with the nonsense that is happening in the area.

The resident added that the deceased shooter was on trial for murder and required to live outside the area due to bail conditions.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed the separate murder cases which occurred on Saturday at 8:45 AM at Beverly Court, Ravensmead. He said:

A 54-year-old man was shot and fatally wounded by a 26-year-old man. The alleged shooter was beaten to death at the scene of the incident. The motive is believed to be gang-related.

Van Wyk said that, according to reports, the deceased was shot by the suspect and fatally wounded with a gunshot to the back of his head while attending his son’s funeral at the specified address. He added:
<blockquote>
The suspect then ran away but was chased and apprehended by the community who attended the funeral and was beaten to death.
</blockquote>
Ravensmead Community Policing Forum spokesperson Lucian Davids expressed dismay over the tragic occurrence of two deaths at the funeral. Said Davids:

The perpetrator was caught by members present, disarmed, and beaten to death. These are the two bodies in the video that has circulated on the internet this morning.
Historically, this is the first incident of this nature, and as Ravensmead CPF, we condemn in the strongest terms this terrible precedent. It is an unspeakable act to do while someone is being laid to rest.
This does not inspire confidence in families, crime is creeping much closer to our personal spaces and creates conditions where the community is forced to act outside of legal bounds.
We request that SAPS respond swiftly as it has displayed over time in the community. We await the details of the case, for the sake of our community. We are shocked, terrified, and disappointed by this.

SA: Father Shot Dead At Murdered Son's Funeral

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East African Community (EAC) have jointly called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The ceasefire will be enforced by army chiefs within five days.
SADC and EAC leaders held a joint summit in Tanzania on Saturday, 08 February, to address the crisis in the eastern DRC.
Rwanda-backed March 23 Movement (M23) rebels have captured Goma and the war has displaced hundreds of thousands of people.
A communique issued after the summit outlined the resolutions, including the call for a ceasefire. It reads in part:
<blockquote>
The Joint Summit directed the EAC-SADC Chiefs of Defense Forces to meet within five (5) days and provide technical direction on immediate and unconditional ceasefire and cessation of hostilities, provision of humanitarian assistance including repatriation of the deceased and evacuation of the injured.
</blockquote>
The joint summit also called for the reopening of main supply routes and Goma airport. Reads the communique:
<blockquote>
Develop a securitisation plan for Goma and surrounding areas, opening of main supply routes including Goma-Sake-Bukavu; Goma-Kibumba-Rumangabo-Kalengera- Rutshuru-Bunagana; and Goma- Kiwanja-Rwindi- Kanyabayonga-Lubero including navigation on Lake Kivu between Goma and Bukavu and immediate re-opening of Goma Airport.
</blockquote>
The leaders called for negotiations and dialogue with all state and non-state parties, including military and non-military groups such as the M23.
They also directed that plans for the withdrawal of uninvited foreign armed forces from the DRC be developed and implemented.
SADC Chairman President Mnangagwa, EAC counterpart President Ruto, and host Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan were among the attendees.
DRC’s President Felix Tshisekedi, who accuses Rwanda of backing rebels in his country, participated virtually.
Also in attendance were Rwandan President Paul Kagame, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, South African leader Cyril Ramaphosa, Somalian President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud, and Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema.

Leaders from Southern African and East African countries want the fighting in Congo to stop. They met in Tanzania and want army leaders to enforce a ceasefire in the next five days. The rebels have taken over a city and many people are suffering. They also want safe routes for supplies and the airport to open again. The leaders want to talk to everyone involved in the conflict and remove foreign soldiers from Congo. They hope that these actions will bring peace to the region.
