Zimbabwe Saints Football Club is a Zimbabwean professional football club which used to play in the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League. It is based in Bulawayo and plays in the Zimbabwe's Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Division Two.
Background
Zimbabwe Saints Football Club was founded in 1936 as Mashonaland United before it changed it's name to Zimbabwe Saints in 1975.[1]
Club Achievements
Zimbabwe Saints won the league title in 1977 and in the then Super League in 1988 after going on a 23 unbeaten game run. Zimbabwe Saints went on to represent the country in the African Cup of Club Champions in the following year and reached the quarter-final stage. They were also losing semi-finalists in the CECAFA Club Championships in 1988.[2]
Relegation
Zimbabwe Saints were relagated in the 2011 Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League season.[3] Through their financial muscle, Chauya Chikwata, as they are best known by their supporters, bounced back into Division One after acquiring the Railstars Football Club franchise at the beginning of the Southern Region 2013 soccer season.
Zimbabwe Saints were kicked out of Zifa Southern Region Division One at the beginning of the 2014 season after failing to meet their financial obligations.[2] They however cleared their $2 500 debt and were cleared to play in the Zifa Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Division Two Soccer League in 2015.[4]
